This lesson has been a great help Lauren: as an older student that is still struggling with finger dexterity and a major HATER of the C chord this really helps and gives me a 'boost' on how to eventually master the "real" C chord (btw who came up with these rules on what is a 'real' chord or not??) You make it so EASY to learn Lauren thank you!

Ha ha, it technically is a real c chord, just not the full version. Glad you found this helpful.

Thanks Lauren! This one has made things easier, though, sometimes when I need to I just use the A and D string because I'd just be playing the base notes anyway. Being in my 60's makes it hard to catch all the things that used to come easy... like moving my used up fingers and hearing words. Thanks for talking slower than most (when other channels do the rapid fire talking on their videos, no matter how many times I back it up, I just can't understand them. Tinnitus doesn't help), I can comprehend what you're saying. All that said, I'm sure by playing with my guitars (I have 5 so theres at least one or two for every room) every day something will come out of it. My elderly mother likes to hear me play and that's one of the biggest bonuses. Thanks again!

Yup, I'm one of those folks who have a hard time with the C Chord. The Easy C to the Em exercise I had forgotten about from one of your other videos I watched, Lauren, so seeing it again here is solid refresher. I broke my left arm right below my wrist when I was 13 so the dexterity in my left hand when I move to different frets is not like super slow, but can be a pain. I have noticed, however, that my wrist now after practicing for a couple weeks feels pretty good after a session. I try to go 15-20 minutes then take a break. I can play through Amazing Grace without messing up too badly now, although not with chords. I have all 4 verses written down and I'm trying to memorize the lyrics as I play the song. My goal is to play through all 4 verses without messing up one time. Then I'd like to get my timing down while somebody sings it while I play it. That'd be fun.

Hi Lauren! I'm still struggling with level 3 and I can see why you refer to this as a tough one. I've been experimenting with different shapes for C and G, including a 4-finger G and transitioning to a 4-finger C (add9?). At some point, I will have to decide what works best for me. I have changed my practice regimen from two or three times a week to a little bit every day. Sometimes it seems like when I get warmed up it goes more smoothly, other times not so much. I keep hanging in and appreciate your positive messaging. Thanks so much!

Replying late here, but I wanted to share a tip that helped me with the C chord. As a beginner we have a tendency to look down over the neck to watch our fingers. This will prevent you from getting proper finger positions much of the time. Readjust the guitar and make sure it's upright. Bring your elbow in close to the body and get on the tips of your fingers. I have short fingers and when I'm looking over the neck to watch my finger positions, it was impossible for me.

Hi there, C chord is the first chord I ever learned, about half a century ago, so no problem there. Thing is, I recently picked up my old guitar again, and prob overdid it, now my left index is about twice its original size... Going to see my doctor about it, see what works. If I get my finger back, I’ll be on your 7 level course, promise. You don’t just keep it clear and understandable, you also mention arthritis and had me playing along with a metronome, went great, even with a stiff finger, lol. Thanks, hope to join you soon !

The C was challenging for me at first, but I seem to have gotten it after some practice. It's not automatic, but I can play it clean. The full G is my personal nemesis. Trying to get the 1st string fretted invariably leads to muting the 2nd (usually with a fingernail). Maybe not "Invariably", but far more often than I'd like.
@LaurenBateman3 жыл бұрын
Interesting. It happens sometimes. You're lucky to have gotten the C so easily

@@LaurenBateman I was shocked that the C 'just happened'. One day I was ready to beat the ol' Yamaha against a wall and then... there it was. Truly, that's been an experience I've had several times during my first months. It's not working... it's not working... this sucks... and, then, BINGO. I wonder if my habit of 'visualizing' the chords when I'm not near my guitar helps. Thinking about making them and what that feels like. I've found it works for me in sports, anyway. That G, though, is still elusive. I think I may have mutant hands. :-) For the record, I'm on the older side at 53.

C major is the 1st chord I learned when I started in '65. . .then G7 then F. Now I could play 3 chord songs in the "mother" key of C. . .no sharps, no flats. In other words as a beginner you had to start with one of the most difficult "families". I prefer to capo the 3rd fret and play A form, or "family". . .better still, I'll play bass and let the guitar slingers deal with it!
