Proud owner of a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe with V-6 engine. I have 207,000 miles on it. I change the oil (fully synthetic) every 6000 miles and is as strong as ever. No rust at all and the paint still looks great.

Mechanic's perspective: the biggest reason why Kia and Hyundai engines blow is because people don't maintain them properly. They use cheap oil and they don't change the oil enough. That 19.95 oil change you keep getting is a super bad idea. Cheap oil change places use trash oil and trash oil trashes your engine. You need high quality full synthetic oil in these cars. I have seen failure due to cheap oil and lack of oil changes many times. I have also seen Kia's and Hyundai's last a long time when cared for. Bottom line, you have to maintain them appropriately. They do not handle abuse well but most cars don't. Honestly, I'd buy a Kia or Hyundai over a modern Chevy. I see more Equinoxes and Terrains coming in with engine problems than anything else these days. Modern GM products have taken a big dive in quality from what they used to be while Kia is on the rise.

I like Hyundai and Kia but I’m very hesitant to buy them because of engine and their recalls on it because it would caught fire or something. They are very nice when it comes to comfort, tech, style and value but reliability it’s a-bit of a mix bag.

That’s exactly how I feel. I’m torn between get a Mazda and a Kia/Hyundai. Ik Mazda has its reliability… but the other car’s tech, style and comfortability take it.. I just feel like Mazdas are a bit outdated but they’re still nice nonetheless

I have a 2009 Sonata with 306,000 miles and no engine or any problems. Regular maintenance and very reliable and worth every penny and this car owes me nothing! I can say this has been the best vehicle I have ever owned over 50 years of driving!

Hey Dave, I recall a study conducted by IHS Global Insight back in 2015, ranking car brands by repair statistics on behalf of the insurance industry. Both Kia and Hyundai were close behind Toyota in overall reliability, The real surprise was Chevrolet. Chevy cars needed repairs more often and the repairs cost more. The IHS report made the evening news but I can't find links online.

Our 2007 kia sportage has 228000 miles on it and I recently had to replace the original clutch and radiator in it. Did all the work myself in the driveway. Wife wanted a newer car with lower mileage so she now has a 3013 Hyundai Santa fe sport 2.0t awd. She loves it but misses driving her little kia. Lucky for her we kept it. I now use it to haul my motorcycle to the drag strip and camp in the back of it.

@@sjh60633 LOL in terms of performance YES, the Germans are superior with performance, gorgeous interiors, but NOT reliability. So, you need to work on your reading comprehension! PLUS,kia/hyundai have 100k warranty unlike the germans, so if something go wrong at least you are covered for the most part until 100k. I am fully aware of German unreliability, this is why I buy Acura.

I have 2016 Kia Sorento SXL with over 114,000 miles on the clock and never had an issue. Also owned 2010 Kia Forte. They are great cars and very reliable, if you take care of your car it will last you long time. That goes for any car makers.

I love my 2018 Kia Sportage. Unlike the American brands they are in the top part of the Consumer Reports list of most reliable vehicles. My worst vehicle was a Chrysler Town & Country which was a money pit that would have it's electrical system short out after any major rainstorm!

Yeah. Couldn't be happier with 2017 Kia Niro. Toyota, Honda etc are all so stuck in the past. I love that Kia and Hyundai don't upcharge for tech that should be standard in all cars. This tech (auto braking etc) doesn't cost a lot to make any more. It should be in all cars.

I had a 2018 Hyundai Kona which had no issues at all. I traded the Kona in 2020 for a 2018 Kia Stinger. The Stinger had sat on the dealer lot unsold for 2 years and was discounted by almost $10,000. I love my Stinger and so far no issues. Before the Kona I had a 2011 Nissan Juke and the engine failed at 7 years/59,000 miles. All regular maintenance was done at the dealer. Nissan did not stand behind their vehicle. I had a 2004 Mazda Rx8 and the engine failed at 7 years 60,000 miles. However Mazda stood behind their vehicle.

AT 77, I've owned/driven all makes.Knowing Hyundai's Theta engine issue was in the rearview mirror, and they put a fine point on it with a 10 yr warranty...I bought one for spite...The Tucson was a proven platform, the tech very high on the Ultimate trim...2 yrs in with no problems. I also have a Gen2 Tacoma. I like both.

Years ago, my friends bought a KIA Sportage and had nothing but problems with it. The dash knobs broke, the rear window fell out and the doors didn't close right. They ended up lemon-lawing it and bought a Toyota. I think their quality has come a long way since then and I wouldn't mind giving KIA a try in the future. Hyundai/Kia/Genesis DEFINITELY have the best lineup of new cars and crossovers for 2021 over any other automaker. They had a goal to put out the best products for 2020/2021, and they reached that goal. Kia Seltos, Hyundai Palisade and Genesis GV80 already best in class Impressive!

I’ve owned both Toyotas and Hyundais. Both are great cars and if you keep up with maintenance they last forever. For the record I’ve owned: 2002 Corolla, 2007 Scion tC, 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe, 2014 Hyundai Sonata 2.0 T Limited, 2014 Highlander limited, 2016 Sienna, 2018 Highlander, 2021 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy and 2021 Toyota Sienna Limited. These are my go-to brands and are both reliable.

We talk cars, clothing, shoes, firearms, motorcycles, handbags and just about everything else under the sun.Consumers, especially American consumers want to belong. We want to belong to the cool group, the popular group, the expensive group or whatever the group of the day happens to be, Like a lot of the comments you read most of the conversations I have with people reveal that they don't have any data to support their position. Their position is a position of belief and of emotion. It's not something that's likely to change either. My only loyalty is to my family and to myself. Outside of that circle I'm loyal to whatever is the best thing for ME at that time for that need. I personally happen to like some of the vehicles in the Hyundai/Kia group and I happen to not like some of the vehicles in the Hyundai/Kia group. I can also say the same about not only every other automotive brand but every brand across any segment. I do however think that the vehicles from Hyundai/Kia group provide a really good bang for your dollar when you compare their vehicles to comparable vehicles in their segment. Just a few experiences over 35 years of driving, I bought a new Kia Borrego V8, kept it for 10 years without issues before trading in for a new 2019 Niro Hybrid SX, so far so good, fuel efficient, comfortable and full of tech. Also bought a new 2015 Sportage LX, still have it and it has had no issues after 7 years. Previous to 2015, The first car I bought in '96 was a used '93 Pontiac Grand AM which blew the transmission, then owned 2 new Impalas (2000 & 2005) that were okay buy needed minor warranty work, and a used '97 Isuzu Trooper V6 manual that was great, but after I had it a few years it was 13 years old and I didn't want to deal with rust. Previous to that, in the late 80's I also drove my parents VW Jettas that each had minor electrical issues. There are plenty of brands and models that have had their share of problems, including Toyota and Honda, but people choose to ignore, or forgive and forget those issues/recalls, but cling to the narrative that certain current brands are as bad as the ones from last century. For example, nearly 10 million Toyotas have been recalled since 2012 due to risk of fire for various reasons, and only 485,000 Hyundai/Kia cars were recalled due to risk of fire with their 2.0 and 2.4 engines.

I was all aboard the Hyundai hype train until I bought my 2019 Veloster N. The dealership experience was dreadful, actually beyond dreadful it was deceitful, all facets too, sales and service. The 18 months I owned that car were pure hell. The Veloster was in for warranty work 3 days after I took delivery and many times after that. A little customer service would've gone a long way.

I have a 2020 Hyundai Santa fe LTD with 107.600 miles with no problems running Amazoil. Oil change intervals at 10,000 miles engine is a 2.0 turbo. All fluids changed transfer case and rear differential and transmission two times except for the engine coolant just done at 107.000 miles. Still running great-paid 36,000 plus tax and license.

Hyundai and Kia do not have the snob appeal that some other brands do have. As for quality, every car manufacturer has good and bad models, made during good and bad model years. The key to Hyundai's appeal has always been to provide vehicles that are a "good value for the dollar". From the 1980's to the present, they continue to do just that. Incidentally, since it is not possible to tell how well an owner is maintaining their vehicle, it is not as easy to determine the "most reliable" car as it would appear. A driver who takes really good care of a base model Hyundai Elantra will always have a better experience than a driver who neglects their top trim of the Toyota Camry.

Other than the perception, Hyundai and Kia have nothing wrong. The perception is based on old reputation from the 90s. I have a 2021 Sonata. And I bought it after test driving competitors from all major brands. I really like this Sonata. It is a very good car, better than Accord, Camry and Mazda 6. Comfortable, quiet, high tech, fuel efficient and modern. It looks different than most other cars though.

I have a 2013 elantra limited, 150k miles, I've only had to change the starter, a break caliper, and a few sensors aside from normal plugs, coils, breaks, oil changes. It's been solid.

I totally agree with that one comment about 2011 being a turning point. That’s when the new Sonata & Elantra came out and the first time I didn’t associate Hyundai with “boring”. And no one else was offering such a long warranty. That was some peace of mind I had never heard of. A few years later and Kia starts designing some damn good looking cars with lots of tech and features that should interest ANY discerning buyer. So to any comment saying that they’re burning maybe IS still stick in 1995. As far as reliability, I can’t speak on that. I haven’t experienced that issue first hand so I don’t know.

I've done a lot of research, including your videos, on new cars since we are in the market for one. We keep cars a long long time and it's a big decision and a lot of money. Current car is a 2000 Ford Explorer 4WD with 200,000+ miles. Yeah, it's had work done on it but it was still cheaper than buying a new vehicle. Now we are in the market for a new SUV AWD. After research and test drives on lots of brands and models, we have decided on the Kia Telluride. 'Nuff said.

I have a 2012 Hyundai Azera and it runs well, but the steering wheel shakes and rattles every time I hit a raised tar strip. They want more to fix it then the vehicle is worth. They are the best value for money however reliability needs to be improved. My 2016 sonata engine seized at 100k after the oil consumption/metal shaving issue. Hyundai replaced the engine under the recall/warranty.

The reliability is high. It was just a bad few years. Every manufacturer has bad years. Toyota now has a recall out for engine fires. You and I will still call Toyota one of the most reliable vehicles out there today. In my family, we have two Kia vehicles, a Spectra and a Soul. The Spectra has close to 200,000 miles and it got there just on regular maintenance.

My late mom bought a 16 ebony black Kia Sorento in ebony black fwd with third row seating from Fred Anderson Kia of Raleigh back in 17 and it now has 67,xxx on it. It still has the remaining powertrain warranty in effect. It has never ever broken down b4. It has been in 3 minor accidents but overall the car has been very reliable. My mom used to own a Hyundai excel 3 Dr hatch in gray with a standard transmission. I think that car has went to the big car garage in the sky. I miss that car

We were looking to replace our 2010 Buick Enclave CXL money pit edition. I couldn't wait to get rid of it. Even with only 95k miles on it, I felt more at ease taking my 2010 Honda Crosstour with 190k miles on a 1,000-mile round trip to visit my in-laws. We looked at three-row SUVs from Honda, Toyota, and Subaru, none of which impressed us at all. They all lacked style, ergonomics, and tech. My wife didn't even have Hyundai on her mind when I suggested we look at what they might have to offer, not even knowing the Palisade was out. She was very pleasantly surprised with the driveability, styling, tech, amenities, warranty, and safety features that were standard on the Palisade LImited. We asked friends who had Hyundais and they all were happy with their vehicles. We ended up placing an order for a 2020 Palisade Limited and even I enjoy driving it. So much better than the Buick POS. Here's to hoping for a long life with our Hyundai.

I own a 2019 Hyundai Sonata SEL and a 2020 Kona SEL Plus. I think some is the hate, like you mentioned was the number of engines that had problems and got recalls on them. Both of my Hyundais engines were got checked out and are fine and are covered for the life of our ownership of the cars. Otherwise, they have been fine.

I switched to Hyundai brand in 2015, it has been great. I like Hyundai & Kia design in their recent models. In early 2000s, I never consider Hyundai or Kia on the buy list. There was a class lawsuit settlement, and Hyundai offers lifetime engine replacement.

I was looking at a RAV4 hybrid and the amount of recalls/service bulletins was astonishing. Anyone banking on Toyota/Honda reliability is living in the past. I’ll take a 10 yr/100K warranty all day!

I wanted to get a new Sonata in 2020 when the lease was up on our existing vehicle but the monthly payment on a lease was way too much. I have heard they’re having issues with engine problems and that can’t be good news.

I own a Kia Sorento 2014 engine spun a rod bearing at 95k miles . I changed the oil every 3000 miles . Thankfully i have the 10 year 100,000 mile warranty . Kia agreed to replace the engine but unfortunately due to so many engines failing it will take 3 months

I own a 2013 Elantra Coupe, only 64,750 miles (put 13,000 of them on it myself) and it’s been a solid car so far, though not perfect. Random things go wrong on these cars. My trunk was stuck shut for a month when the latch failed because a screw became loose and jammed the mechanism. After a couple rounds at the pub my buddy sits on the trunk, and it pops open. I fold down the seats and buy a new latch online, install it that weekend. A $23 fix and a half hour of time. Now I have an engine light and codes p0456 and p0449, both emissions related. Needs a new evap solenoid or some junk. Doesn’t affect driveability and I’m only fixing it because Illinois does emissions tests. One thing to note is that brake issues are common on these cars; you’ll hear the occasional grind but no effect on stopping power. I change my oil every 4,000 miles with high quality synthetic as these things don’t hold a lot of oil to begin with. My mechanic reassures me that I bought a solid car, and seeing as it has only been in his shop once since ownership for changing pads and rotors, I think I would agree.

I only have experience with two of them (both Hyundai's). When my Sentra went to hell a coworker sold a friend of mine an older model Santa Fe for 500 bucks. The engine threw a rod a few short months later. My roommate later had a Hyundai Sonata. Issues with the Crankshaft sensor, I said "I'll fix it!", not realizing you need to remove the Timing Belt and the power steering pump which were both a nightmare to get to and do to to replace the sensor. What a numnuts design! The Sonata continued to have problems with that sensor to which I refused to touch it again and another mechanic said it was electrical and she sold it.

My 2013 Toyota Highlander has 237K miles on it, engine still smooth, stayed on top of my oil changes. But over the past month I’ve been replacing the radiator, windshield, ball joints, brakes, tires, and still needs struts & bushings. It’s only a matter of time before something major fails. So I went shopping, went to Toyota first obviously, RAV4 was my next purchase. My daughter is on her 3rd Kia, due to the first two were totaled in accidents, none her fault, and she walked away from both accidents, excellent protection. Then I crossed shop Kia, Sportage X-Pro won 🥇, better styling, better features, better feel, better warranty, & better price. Time will tell on reliability, but the 100K warranty definitely puts me at ease. I’m loving my 2023 Kia.

If you buy a Hyundai (especially the Tucson and Santa Fe) be prepared to spend minimum of $175-$500 every month on BS problems you will never experience in a quality car like an Honda. Every other month you will have to replace 1-4 0f 6 to 8 catalytic converters that go out for no reason like clock work one after the other. Your gas line will need replacing, then your gas tank that rotted from the inside for no apparent reason. Your check engine light will be on more than it is off. You'll also notice when you hit a bump your car will wobble when the front wheels leave the ground, your passengers will also notice this and ask you if the car is "safe to drive that way"?. When you finally replace head gasket, then the entire engine and decide you've had enough, and sell it for next to nothing, you'll buy yourself an Acura and realize that it never needs maintenance, that it isn't normal to be without your car every other month because it's in the shop again, and you'll swear like I did to NEVER buy another Hyundai again!!!

I have a 2017 Sonata and I agree! Stupid problem after stupid problem. Trunk latch broke and trunk shut closed with no access, gas pedal sensor going out on freeway and leaving me stranded, paint peeling off the roof at 38k miles. Their quality control is dog 💩

I don't know if I'd use the word hate on Kia but I can tell you I'm beyond disappointed. I bought a new 2020 Kia Soul last year. About a month or so ago I get a letter from Kia stating that for some 2020 souls the oil piston rings were defective. I bring it into the dealer from which I purchased the car and after testing , the engine was found to be defective. It spent about 2 weeks at the dealer. The engine get's replaced. I get the Kia back and all seems well for a bit. 2 weeks ago I turn on the car, the check oil light comes on and the engine sounds like a sewing machine gone mad. It's been at the dealer ever since. I contacted Kia Customer support and I'm waiting to hear back from them. So to sum it up I'm extremely disappointed with Kia and the lack of Q.C.

I had a 2006 Hyundai Sonata with the 3.3L Lambda V6. I loved that car. Its odometer was well past 200k miles and hasn't had any serious problems. I'd still have it if it hadn't collided with a deer back when it had 100k miles a decade ago. By 2019, I was hearing metallic stress sounds which I guess were caused by that deer collision. So, I replaced it with a 2019 Camry SE. The reason I didn't go with Hyundai/Kia was reports of engine fires with the Theta II 4-cylinder engine. Too bad Hyundai didn't continue the Sonata with a V6.

You know when the manufacturer published a official statement notifying owners not to park your Kia \ Hyundai in your garage due to risk of not only a car fire, but a high chance of burning your house down as well. For me yeah thats a Big problem.

I own a 2018 Elantra Sport. I've put 25k miles on it. Can't speak to the reliability just yet, obviously, but the warranty provides solid reassurance that even if there are issues, I won't be hurting too much from it. I have to say that the driving experience in my car is incredible. Great steering feel and throttle response that was completely absent in my 2007 Toyota I owned before this car. Not that it represents the brand as a whole but that Toyota gave me nothing but issues. Constant oil leaks and valve failures. Even my parents' 2014 Camry has horrible driving dynamics. The throttle is jumpy especially at low speeds and I might as well be steering with a playstation controller with how little feedback I get through the wheel. Hyundai and Kia understandably have a bad rep due to their products from the early 2000s however I think they've really turned it around within the last decade or so and have become the leaders in reliability.

We bought my wife a Sonata Hybrid a year ago for her new job (2 hour round trip daily) and it’s been great. Gets GREAT gas mileage. She loves it, and I drive it all the time. I’d buy another Hyundai for sure.

I'm very happy with the 2013 Hyundai Santa fe sport we just bought. 84000 miles on it but only 2500 miles on the engine. Gotta love federal government safety recall. Class action lawsuit may have played a part in it too.

I agree with those who say Kia’s and Hyundais are not as reliable as Toyotas and Hondas The point is that they were horrible cars and now they are much better Besides those companies are clever They put a lot of tech in the cars but the engines still lag Toyota and Hondas If you are into tech and want a little cheaper car that you will not own pass the ten year mark, you may consider a Hyundai or Kia, but watch out after ten years or 100 000 miles Besides, they are not that cheap anymore and Toyota just started putting great new tech in their cars But as one of the comments says: some people are very gullible.

My first car was a 2018 Kia Rio had 40K miles, no problems. It got totaled in an accident though, but held up like a champ💪🏾. Now I have a 2018 Hyundai Kona with 18K miles (I know that’s not much). But I haven’t had a single mechanical issue with it. And it’s funny how everyone says Kia is “unreliable” but you literally see a Kia Soul every second 😂😂😂. And there’s rumors that Hyundai is making a truck, the Santa Cruz.

My 2021 Kia K5 is already my 3rd Kia and I love my cars. Never had a single problem with any of them. Great design, feature/price ratio, the reliability is getting better and better, plus Toyota's reliability is decreasing.

The reliability is not getting better new Kia and Hyundai owners are posting daily on the Engine Failure- kia on Hyundai page. They are still spontaneously catching on fire even after the recalls. Not to mention you have to worry about a teenager stealing it enjoy riding and killing a family of innocent people like they did in Buffalo where I live.

I had 2008 Hyundai Elantra with 140k miles when I traded for a 2021 Veloster N with DCT. No problems with Elantra for 12 years, other than oil changes, brakes, tires and a battery. The only reason I didn’t keep the Elantra, I wanted the new Veloster N with DCT
