Can we appreciate the writing here? Not many writers would have the stones to treat their audience with such intellectual respect. Isayama didn't give us anything just threw us into a warzone in which we have nothing but confusion and said figure it out. Which put us in the trenches with them. As our focus is on the overarching story and how the threads of the plot connect he was focused on the battle and the intricacies of war. Its sooo brilliant as our two perspectives come clashing together and the pieces start coming together. As the dust settles all we can ask is where are our heroes? It's just so good.

Episode 4 and onward took place in year 850, five years after the Colossal Titan compromised Wall Maria, and the last episode of season 3 has the Survey Corps reach the sea one year after they took back Wall Maria. Season 4 primarily takes place in the year 854, three years after the final scene in season 3, but it does time jump through past years in different parts of the story.

In S4 he isn't. He shows redeeming qualities, but still fight for Marley and make nonsensical decisions, like later when he says to Eren to just stop fighting, so Marley can genocide Eldians some more. He was interesting in S1-3, but in S4 he is terrible, alongside Pieck, Porco, etc.

This season they changed the animation studio. Before it was animated by WIP Studio and now it is animated by MAPPA, who animated anime such as Jujutsu Kaisen or Chainsaw Man. So that's where the change in tone, style and music comes from.
