I've watched a few of Neil's videos and thought yeah this guy seemed to know his stuff but watching him actually fun through a fit, on a complex issue is, frankly, amazing. Even more so because i've suffered a very similar issue. Having had several gout attacks the structure of my feet changed, causing them to differ in length, resulting in instability with my walk / gait. This in turn caused the tracking of my foot, knee and hips to become misaligned, resulting in knee pain in both knees. I went to see a osteopath for help before I knew any of this and they were absolutely useless, a bike fit was much more helpful. I'm still working through trying to get everything back to normal but thing's like arch supports and hip exercises seem to help

Interesting stuff !!!! This is pure gold to me. I have a foot that is 8mm shorter than the other, I wonder if that is contributing to me sitting wonky ? Well, it's worth a try to stagger the cleats by 4mm or so and give it a go, if I get wonky to the other side I'm on to something.

Crazy to go to a 47, but make sense. I used the Hinault method, from his book, and went to a 53 with 53 toptube (from a 58cm I think), much more exposed seat tube, but the reach was great for flat, but no good for long hills and mountains.

I've been navigating a slight disagreement between my bike fitter and my physiotherapist. And there's enough of a difference in my feet length -- nothing this radical of course, but the same basic cause, a collapsed arch lengthening one foot a fair bit and resulting in about a 3mm-4mm difference -- that this might just resolve it. So the cleat on the left foot is going to go just a touch bit forward as they're both all the way back.

I'm surprised he didn't clock you when you said Camembert cheese then Tasmania haha. Even though his obe foot is 10mm shorter the cleat position should be the same position relative to the shoe as the shoe size had changed? Unless the foot anatomy is different eg ratio of bone dimensions to foot of course. Ive heard of riders with different metatarsal heights that they correct with arch supports molded to equalise the feet

A 47cm bike with a 178cm rider with long torso to leg length ratio really? His position in profile looks perfect on this bike. Back at 45 degrees if not 47 degrees to horizon aka quasi aggressive with hands on the hoods and perfect reach with arms at 90 deg to shoulders. A textbook position for a performance rider. More drop for a Grand Fondo rider and expecting less neck pain? He already has massive saddle to bar drop and a race fit. I sure want to see the follow up video to this. What is comical about 'idealizing bike size and in particular 'down sizing' is the 'tour' is moving in the opposite direction. More pro riders are raising their handlebars for simple reason that a higher handlebar is faster with a 90 deg elbow bend with flatish back. This is because the forearms aren't exposed to the wind stream with a taller head tube. A lengthened head tube is much less CdA than forearms exposed to the wind stream. The greatest Tour de France rider in History, Lance Armstrong won 7 TdF's who was 1cm shorter than this French rider and Lance rode a '58 cm' Trek Madone. 11cm taller than a 47cm. Lance ran among the least drop in the pro peloton and even a spacer stack under his 130mm stem. A fondo rider this size on a 47cm is silly. His neck pain was a function of poor technique, not wrong bike fit. Locking elbows on a tall bike or slammed bike with greater neck extension will induce neck pain on any bike.

It makes perfect sense to me. I can tell that the reach is actually slightly long but if he just shortens the stem then the bike would be too high. Maybe fully slammed on the 47cm is a bit too low but 15mm lower seems like would be a good fit.

From my point of view a bike fit is not about how it looks but rather about how it feels. In my case, I don't have any discomfort when i put my bike on the home-trainer and outside my position looks fine but after 1h30 i start feeling pain and discomfort. Temporary solution is to twist my position on the bike inorder to manage 6 to 8h rides.

@@MikeFroom how it looks is very important to set a starting point. It doesn't mean he has to look pro but he should look comfortable on the bike without fighting himself with the bike. How you feel is important but you could also train your fatigue resistance. 2 hr vs 6 hr rides mean completely different things to different riders. You could be noodling for 6 hours or going full gas. Same goes for the 2 hour ride. Staying in a full aero position for 2 hours is hard for anyone. A fit required is definitely different for different purposes. More aero positions generally mean smaller saddle to handlebar drop if you want to sustain the duration. Your core and glute strength play a huge role for the final fit.
