Dean Martin was such a smooth crooner with a nice relaxing voice. He was nicknamed "The King of Cool". This is before auto tuning. Artists had to be really able to sing. And the lyrics were clean, romantic & really meant something. He has a huge library of great songs such as "Ain't That A Kick In The Head?", "Memories Are Made Of This", "That's Amore", "You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You", "Sway", "Volare" etc. Dean Martin was also part of the famous Rat Pack in the 60's along with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. & others.

that was Frank Sinatra talking to him from off stage. This is a piece from a special video of a real charity event for a Catholic organization, but it was obvious that no children were in audience, so they cut loose. Martin, Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, and Johnny Carson was the emcee. It's about 2 hours long and called "Sinatra Spectacular". Two orchestras, lead by Count Basie and Quncy Jones. The whole two hour film of the charity event is like this... And Sammy Davis is amazing, as was Sinatra and Johnny Carson. Martin was a partner with Jerry Lewis. And the two had one worst act break-ups ever in show business. Again, the whole show was called Sinatra Spectacular.

Martin, a heavy smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in September 1993, and was told that he would require surgery to prolong his life, but he rejected it. He retired from public life in early 1995 and died of acute respiratory failure resulting from emphysema at his Beverly Hills home on Christmas Day, 1995, at age 78, twenty-nine years to the day, and almost to the minute, after his mother died. The lights of the Las Vegas Strip were dimmed in his honor. Martin was interred at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles. The crypt features the epitaph "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime", the title of his signature song.

The story behind this song was that Dean saw one of his sons listening to the Beatles and he told him that he could knock the Beatles from number 1. His son didn't believe him, so Dean proceeded to do so and did. This song became his signature tune...this version is slightly altered from the original version, so you should find a copy of the song as it was recorded. Also the bit about calling the microphone stand was a reference to his former partner, Jerry Lewis.

Don't let all the goofin' around fool you. Dean Martin was one helluva singer. He could play the drunken fool, but every performance I ever heard him sing, he was pitch perfect on every note. That's the sign of a true artist who knows his instrument quite well. And that little lilt in his voice was uniquely Dino. Just a magnificent talent. And by the way, some of the heckling you heard was coming from Frank Sinatra, off to the right. This song was Dean Martin's biggest hit, and probably the one he's best known for. But Dagmar S. listed a few others below that would be worth hearing. I would also offer a couple others: "Houston," "Send Me the Pillow You Dream On," and his Christmas classic, "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!"

@@p.j.morris633 - Drunks lose control. Dean Martin never lost control of his voice. Drunks can't sing as pitch perfect as Dean Martin. Dino PLAYED a drunk on stage, and yes, I'm sure he drank, perhaps even to excess at times. But make no mistake, he was a pro on stage. You can't perform the way he did if you're sloshed drunk.

Dean Martin will put a smile on your face every time you hear him. And lucky for us, there's a huge catalogue of great performances. But so much more than his beautiful voice, Dean was an all-around entertainer -- one of only a very few who, going back to the mid-40s, was a huge success in nightclubs, on radio, on television, on records, & in movies. All that, and he had a marvelous, well-honed public persona, highlighting his quick & very funny wit, that made him so much fun to watch. Without a doubt, one of the GOATs in a category all his own. & almost any other category one might measure. Dean Martin is one rabbit hole you just have to explore. Everybody Loves Somebody is a beautiful ballad that became Dean's signature song. That's Amore & Ain't That A Kick In The Head are two of my favorites. So is All I Do Is Dream Of You. Sway is also great, as is An Evening In Roma. So very, very many more!!!. His star began it's great ascent in 1946 when he was part of the incomparable duo of Martin & Lewis with comedian, Jerry Lewis. After they split in 1956, both went on to very successful solo careers. And yes, Dean was a member of the famed Rat Pack with Frank Sinatra & Sammy Davis, Jr. Peter Lawford & Joey Bishop were also part of the pack, but Frank, Dean, & Sammy were the most prominent members.

Martin and Lewis were the Robin Williams and Bill Murray of their day. Comedy smash movies that featured Dean's songs. When Dean split from Lewis, he concentrated on his recording career and more serious dramatic roles in movies. He was known as "The King of Cool", but his drunk act was purely for comedy and that glass that was always in his hand was usually apple juice or ginger ale. He was a devoted family man who adored his children. Dean starred in his own TV variety show and every big star in Hollywood wanted to appear with him. He continued hosting TV specials into the early eighties. His oldest son Dino became an Air Force fighter pilot. Tragically Dino was killed when his plane flew into a mountain during a snowstorm. Dean Martin never recovered from the loss and his health deteriorated in the years that followed.

He had 7 kids so whenever possible he wanted to be home at the dinner table according to his daughter Deana. There a story told by her. Her mom was having a party one night, dean thought it was time for it to over. He called the police to complain about the noise next door ... Lol .. He wanted to go to bed so he could go golfing the next morning. What's really funny is what the police officer told him on the phone he said... Most were... not that great (let's call it) and some were outright horrible (Bob Hope) but Dean Martin was exceptionally friendly and generous. Even more amazing was that I met him just a few months after he buried his son. If someone is that kind of person during the worst of times I think it says a lot about his character. The very first time I ever sang Karaoke it was to this song. Couples left their tables and got up and danced. When I sang the last note and ended the song someone from the crowd yelled 'Way to go Dino!" I felt very humbled to receive such a compliment after performing this hit song from my idol. Glad you enjoyed Dean's performance and I love your reactions.

The Dean Martin roasts were some of the funniest jokes on t.v. Lots of " digs" handed out to actors, singers, sport figures, politicians were done with clean humor. Catch them on tv to this day.

The drinking was a gag... I am sure he drank, but the jovial drunk was an act... and you can tell when he starts singing... he is ALL TALENT... by far my favorite crooner... and to me the best of the rat pack...

Dean Martin was one of the rat pack. He didn’t actually drink it was an act. He originally came from Italy and didn’t learn English until he was 6. The man could sing so beautifully.

What made these guys so great and how to work an audience was because they all started out as night club/ saloon entertainers. There is a CD out of the Rat Pack performing their show in St. Louts. Well worth watching.

Did not expect HIM on this channel ---- My mother loved Dean Martin - I was 5 years old back then, we were living near Washington, D.C., two years later we went back to Germany and Dean came with us.This song is one of my earliest memories as is "Mary Poppins", my first movie ever. When my parents had guests and they felt like dancing one of the songs played would be this one.....we had 3 or 4 of his LPs.

Before Dean went solo, he was actually partnered with none other than Jerry Lewis for several years. Surely he picked of a pointer or two from Jerry on how to do comedy.

Honestly, one of the all time great crooners. Dean of course, became famous by being the straight man for Jerry Lewis in the great comedy duo, Martin and Lewis. He acknowledges their break up (which was bitter) when he says, "Excuse me Jerry". But that doesn't take away from how great a singer and performer he was. Now of course, it's time for you to do the most talented member of the Rat Pack, Sammy Davis Jr. Listen to him doing "I Gotta Be Me" and "What Kind Of Fool Am I".

Frank Sinatra was a good friend to both Dean and Jerry. Dean was like a brother to Frank. On the Jerry Lewis telethon for MDA Frank invited Dean to surprise his old partner on the telethon... Dean was humble and accepted this invitation. It was their 1st time in 20 year they appear together on stage. It bought the house down. The last time they was on stage together was I think Dean 80th birthday. Jerry surprised Dean with a cake, they both express their love for each other out loud. Several years earlier before the telethon appearance Jerry was on the Merv Griffin show. He was ask if there was a chance of them having a reunion... Jerry respond was right on he said " Dean is a very private person, I don't think he would want that attention, If it's to happen I will let it be his timing but I would love it. Couple years later thanks to both their pal Frank Sinatra they got back together for a few minutes at least.

@@toniwilson1579 Yes. Well I'm old enough to remember the break up. I saw Jerry on that Merv Griffin show, and I saw Dean's appearance on the MD telethon. So yeah. I'm well old enough to have lived through all of that.
