Depreciation is not a factor if you buy new and keep it for many years. Of course, it would need to be a Toyota product for that.
@ericstewart5175 жыл бұрын
@@paulparoma Depreciation is ALWAYS a factor, if VALUE and best use of funds matter. This miscalculation is what hurts American lifestyle and their ability to save for retirement, emergencies and not be the paycheck to paycheck culture we've become. If party A OVERPAYS for a 🚗 that they own for say 12 years financing say 35k over 5-6 years to begin with before the 'next' repeat purchase cycle....each time paying 25-35% MORE THAN REQUIRED the amount of 💰 wasted is dramatic and STOLEN from said family's lifestyle, retirement planning etc Forcing financial stress in areas ppl FORGET and are BLINDED by error.... Example When Jr. has to BORROW funds fir college, couldn't attend prep school and Mom & Dad skimpped on the 401k and investments...a lot of the funds were 🔥 on securing vehicles at the WRONG time in the lifecycle of utility of the vehicle. Party B routinely purchases the same vehicle 10-30 months after introduction, so 1-3 years ago, and also repurchases every 12 years or so but each time expended 25-35% Less on purchases that are in the 10's of THOUSANDS absolutely...MEANS something 💰 wise. Buying a vehicle on average 15 months after introduction, many times has might actually have MORE warranty left on thread moving forward ( based upon how many miles are on said car when purchased...meaning Party A may have used 18k of a 4yr/50k mi warranty where Party B may buy a the same model 15 months in with 9k mi...at that point who is to say each car falls outta warranty 1st because it's time or mileage and one has twice has many miles already...not to mention if Party B finds a never sold model, it happens) next let's also HONESTY consider that ....for the most part That a vehicle that one family maintains, insures and uses from Year 1- Year 12 is NOT a huge difference in maintaining or using a vehicle from Years 2.5 - 13.5 in the vehicles lifecycle... Except that the cost of acquisition was HUGELY lower, the taxes plus the insurance would be lower the ENTIRE 12 years of both ownership periods....creating quite a bit MORE financial power in one household while suppressing the other with NO REAL actually tangible UPSIDE, other than emotional. The repair cost thing is a crock for 2 main reasons 1) If the vehicle was good enough to make 12 serviceable years for family A w/o nuclear breakdown, it'd likely limp along for another 15 months for family B before their 12th year repurchase as well but 2) Let's say the 🚗 is a piece junk at year 12 ( least we forget that family A purchased the 'junk' for 30% more, which didn't last) family B can always make their repurchases at Year 10 vs Year 12 because, they always have the 💰 because they buy "better'.... Over just 2 well time purchases over a 20 year term with that 💰 working FOR them they'll be 'good' to purchase at the 10 yr or perhaps 8 year mark vd family A that NEEDS to push their vehicle purchase longer to mentally attempt to JUSTIFY the acquisition cost, thus paying more maintenance and upkeep trying to bury the 'bad buy' years prior. $150-$300 more per month on perhaps 2 vehicles over a few auto loan terms is MASSIVE 💰 back into a 🏠 hold if used properly.... The argument works better on a 🏠 because ppl DIE in houses and they generally appreciate but cars are glorified pairs of shoes, we will generally throw them out and buy several over our lifetime.

Frankly, I think the reason for these early sales is most likely that they were either used in rental car fleets (Nissan, as suggested by Andre) or as loaners to push the sales numbers (Jaguar, BMW, Mercedes as suggested in the iSeeCars article). No way that around 10% of buyers return ANY car withing the first year, even if they hate it! Most of these luxury cars are being leased, what usually means at least a two year term. Ending a lease early is very expensive and doesn't make any sense at all.

Some vehicles are definitely a lot more expensive to operate and maintain. I use a great car management program www.automotivewolf.com that monitors the maintenance schedule and tracks all the maintenance, repairs, fuel usage and other expenses related to owning a vehicle. It calculates a cost of ownership per mile, per day etc. My 1988 RX-7 Turbo which I've owned for 10 years is currently at approx $1.45 per mile ( its needed many repairs) while my Toyota Prius currently at over 250,000 miles costs $0.10 per mile to operate. That's a HUGE difference! So I rarely drive the RX-7 :( I just replaced the fuel injectors (4) on the RX-7 at $300.00 per injector UGH!

@DiscoFang5 жыл бұрын
Maybe you can answer the question of what made you buy in the first place? It must be a fairly common thing. Funny thing about the 5 is the driver space is barely larger than in the 3. Leg and headroom is identical and it's barely over an inch wider in shoulder room. Most of the extra length is in luggage space (8 inches longer in the cargo area) and dash design (dash is pushed further forward from the driver. There's about 3 or so inches extra in the engine/front area). I own both 3 and 5 series Tourings and have been over both with a tape measure!

A big factor on these cheaper cars being sold on is surely the fact that they make up rental fleets and when they hit the 20000 mile mark they drop them to avoid the maintenance costs. The Nissan is a good example of this ...👌

While interiors of entry-level luxury offerings have improved as far as features and quality materials, they simply do not offer the refinement, space, performance (unless going for the niche performance variants), and (most importantly) the BRAGGING RIGHTS-that, say, an S-class, traditional Range Rover, or even a 5-series offers. They are really watered-down offerings from these luxury brands so that middle-class individuals can pretend to be prestigious.

That doesn't apply here. No real luxury car buyer would be caught dead in any of these cars. And in most cases they are right, The exception would be Jaguar’s XF, which in the motorhead press gets consistently rave reviews. A decade ago I bought a Jag XJR, spent about three thou fixing the trouble spots and have enjoyed basically cost-free driving, just psying operating costs in a fantastic vehicle. If you're a motorhead you know so much more than the average owner or sales guy, every car you own should be a bargain. (Just don't take on the service guys.)

Once they bought these cars they realized the cars are not that special and cost an arm and a leg to operate (if the warranties were over) and dump the turds as fast as they can (while they are still under warranty) hoping not to loose too much money.

This report is inaccurate in that loaner vehicles are “sold” to the dealer by BMW here in the southern region. Then the dealer sells it to the customer as used for legal requirements. So this may seem as though the X3 is being bought and resold by customers, but it’s not. It’s virtually impossible to get out of a lease or loan in the first year unless you hate money. These used 2019 X3s are demos/loaners.

As others have said, much of this list are cars that people bought because they thought it would make them appear successful or wealthy. In reality, very few people care what you drive. I saw an Evoque in an acquaintances garage and immediately said to myself-he only bought that baby SUV so he could be seen/say he drives a Range Rover. He sold it rather quickly. Presumably after he learned that it did not increase his social capital and was too small. As they mentioned you can see the trend here and the companies are capitalizing on it- people want to say they have a BMW, Mercedes, etc. So the companies are making these 30k versions. People drive them a year and realize they paid for a nameplate and not the actual type of vehicle they want for their lifestyle. Someone else I know, who probably doesn’t clear 50k a year, dropped out of college without a degree-because he couldn’t get more student loans. He recently posted his new BMW on Facebook. Another woman I know probably ballpark family income $80k with 2 kids, recently told me she bought a 2019 BMW. I am like what? Scratching my head. I am the opposite of impressed, I actually feel sad for her, because I care about them. This list should be used as a learning tool, hopefully it will save some people if they understand the deeper meaning.

These are cars that are fashion choices as much as anything. Doesn't make them inherently bad, it's just part of their "thing". There seems to be an assumption with the "analysis" that people were disappointed with the cars for some reason and ditched them. I know I used to change my car every couple of months usually on a whim or a need (4wd wagon in the ski season). It just happened to be wayyy on the other end of the price scale but if I could afford it I'd probably be still doing similar. And some people certainly can.

Most of these (Germans) are service loaners and Demos; they tend to be mid to entry level models from that particular brand. Manufacturers offers additional discount to dealers to use some of these models as service loaners. When it’s under 5000 miles, they can still lease it at lower payment. Which turns out to be a great lease for a lot of buyers. They are not really consumer bought it at retail and sell them right away.

Have to take issue with this. Many of these cars are lease vehicles returned after a year, some are rental cars turned over in sales, especially the BMW 3 series which is one of the most leased vehicles. The survey is based on vehicles returned to the sales line,and the reasons are as varied and not necessarily buyer regret.

I think it has to do with the economy. It is no longer feasible to run with the Joneses as we've done in years past with owning such Vehicles. So now with high monthly payments but not equally as high paychecks people are coming to their senses trading in that 4 to $500 a month payment for something more manageable
@linger20015 жыл бұрын
I can't buy into that theory simply because the average transaction price of all new vehicles is up to $35,285. So people are still buying expensive cars. So that price on a 5 year loan is gonna be right at $600 dollars. All these cars have 1 or 2 general themes. 1) they are irritatingly small or 2) have high maintenance/ ownership cost.
@codysmith98135 жыл бұрын
Heck most of these payments if bought new would be $600-$1200 a month depending on loan duration. Pretty much a mortgage loan instead of car loan.

I think you are partially right, however I think people are moving their payments over to Tesla. They get caught up in the buzz and being the first person on their block with a Tesla that they buy in to the savings calculator and buy a 40k Tesla with 500 per month payments. Model 3 prices are inline with most of these vehicles but come with more status. Low level luxury owners are chasing status symbols

Believe the method in this study may picking up demonstrator vehicles. Example: my wife in now in her 3rd Mini Cooper. Perhaps some dealer incentive is involved because all three had previously been titled to the dealership for only a month or two. Mileage on all three under 500 miles. All purchased as new demonstrators, but based on the Carfax on the VIN numbers all three were previously titled. Our local BMW/Mini dealer always has a large number of demonstrators for sale with very good pricing. That is true for many luxury brands, and it is that type of brand/model that dominates the list.
