As layoffs continue en force in 2024, one reason for the massive video game industry shake-up is a result of the acquisitions rush from the past two years. #IGN #Gaming

To cut it short: these companies hired people like crazy to rush in on the growth that was happening a couple of years ago FULLY KNOWING that something like that was never ever gonna be sustainable in the long term. All of them most likely had very clear estimates that this was gonna end with thousands of people having their livelihoods destroyed for no fault of their own and they did it anyway, because they are monsters. This isn't about some evil CEOs, this is at the core of what all these companies strive for. Always remember that.

Twitter proved how lazy people are. With the AI development on the horizon, these game developers need to sharpen their skills. The game industry has lowered its hiring standards because of wokeness, now they realize how much trimming they could do with affecting the company. People will cry crunches, the only reason why crunches exist is because studios can't keep talent, ones who will be picked by other studios. A departure of a actual game developer can delay a game for a week especially if there is no in house replacement available.

What these post always neglect to mention is the debt ratio of these companies, and how growing interest rates, even only a percentile makes a massive difference on the debt ratio, and the ability to get funding as your company is devalued in a high interest period - meaning investors want a bigger percentage of the company for the same investment amount they would have made in 2020-21.
@Jamesmincks8195 ай бұрын
The gaming industry is raking in record profits and yet over 6000 people are laid off. Why?? Because after the COVID era buying spree of game studios, with hundreds of billions of dollars spent, Microsoft and Sony now realize that they need to generate profit. So they lay off thousands of developers to cut payroll and save money on overhead in order to generate more overall profit. Mergers and buyouts always lead to layoffs. After a company spends billions to acquire a another company, they will immediately cut payroll to get more profit. The goal is to quickly make back the billions spent to acquire the company.

When you have an industry where over 500 people teams are assembled, and only 368 are actually "essential personnel" , it makes a lot of sense why these work sites have a lot of workers during massive productive shifts to meet deadlines, then cut the dead weight afterwards. My job does it too unfortunately. Either you get a contract and get labeled "essential" through the door, or youre the first to get the boot.

In my experience no major company is taking AI very seriously right now. At least no one in actual dev fields. It's maybe used for some stuff, but overall not much has changed so far. The roles typically effected by these layoffs are non-core teams. Stuff like community teams, QA, legal, finance etc.
@thisnameistaken4 ай бұрын
In your experience? And what exactly IS your experience? Out there polling devs on how much stock they're putting into AI? Also, if "no major company" is taking AI very seriously right now, why have multiple games ALREADY came out with AI art that people were quick to notice? And that's just the stuff people CAN notice. Can't really detect AI helping code get written faster, or more cohesive AI art, etc. And your last statement is also objectively false, because almost every announced lay-off is also coming with the announcement of cancelled games... like the one that happened literally today. @@FancyTophatDude

All of those make sense for regular layoffs in specific fields. They don't explain these insane waves of layoffs where studios are cut down indiscriminately. Parent companies don't care whether it's jobs affected by AI, studios in specific cities etc. they just care about what the next project you're delivering is. Are you gonna make them money soon? You get cut a little bit. If not, you get eviscerated. These parent companies don't care. They hired like crazy when there was growth that clearly wasn't sustainable a couple of years ago knowing that this would be the outcome of that and now here we are.
