I had a 2017 crv 1.5 turbo. Loved the look and feel while driving. But this 1.5 turbo is junk. We had 15000 km on this vehicle and the oil was black and smelled like gas. We had the supposed fix done but nothing changed. Plus the cvt transmission is costly if you need repairs. We dumped this vehicle and bought a rav4. It has a normal transmission and a 2.5 litre non turbo transmission. The problem with the 1.5 litre engine is it needed the turbo to get the horsepower up on a small engine. But the fuel pressure being greater got into the gas. Do your self a favour and buy a rav4 or Mazda suv.
@garyl38023 жыл бұрын
@Jonathan Brea Good question. My daughter has a 2020 Mazda CX-5. She loves it. We have the rav4 2019. They both give great reviews. Both better than crv. I like the rav only because I still have my 2000 Toyota Sienna van with minimal rust.

About Mitsubishi, I own a 10 years old Outlander 2.4 engine with cvt not the Sport model in Canada, This is my 2nd Outlander, the previous one I had it for 6 years before my son wrote it off. I picked the 4 instead of the V6 because it's chain driven not belt. Here temperature range from -40C in winter to +35C in the summer. Regular maintenance, tires and wipers plus change differential oil once at 96,000 Km, now at 180,000 Km with all original parts, even the brake pads, they are wearing thin should replace them soon. Brother-in-law had a 14 years old Outlander V6 traded it in for a new car recently. The other car in the family is a 10 years old Toyota Venza 4 cylinder, had differential leaked repaired, all shocks and brakes replaced, also some odds and ends on top of regular maintenance. Same vintage, the Toyota cost me more than the Mitsubishi to maintain.
@MattyClivingthedream4 жыл бұрын
Yep, Scotty has no idea on Mitsubishi and I think he is basing his opinion on some of their older products. I own a 2012 Outlander with nearly 180,000km. Not a single issue with the car since new and it also has the original brake pads. Good economy, cheap to service and an all round excellent vehicle. As for CVT failures, my mechanic said you run a higher risk of them failing after 300,000ks but they are generally more reliable than most other cars.

I wonder if there is any automobile manufacturer that doesn't make a weak automatic transmission. The woman I met in late 2001 who became my wife bought a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu from the Used Car lot at a local Oldsmobile dealership not long after we met. That car had 30,000 miles on it then. In mid-2007 I traded the Malibu in on a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado at a Used-up Car lot. (A Used Car lot is at a New Car dealership. A Used-up Car lot are the trade-ins the New Car dealership sent straight to the auction!). Between late 2001 and mid-2007 the Malibu accumulated 192,000 miles. The only issues I had were replacing the intake gaskets twice within 80,000 miles of each other, the master window switch set up for the driver's door and the light bulb socket assembly for the passenger rear tail-lamp. Now, my 2000 Silverado has almost 200,000 miles and I ain't in any hurry to get rid of it!

Scotty my wife wants to get a new SUV. I suggested a Honda CRV because my sister has one 2007 model and never had a major issue, runs great and is over 200k miles now. Is the new CRV 2020 built the same way in terms of reliability?
@brandondickie34562 жыл бұрын
I know im not Scotty, but I have a 2015 CRV and the 2015-2016 year models (made for 2 years) have a 2.4L 4 cylinder naturally aspirated engine making 185 horsepower, and the fuel economy is pretty solid. I’ve been modding mine though so economy on mine is probably different, but from the 2017 year model and on, so from 2017-2020 at the least, the CRVs at least here in the U.S. have a 1.5L 4 cylinder turbocharged engine making 190 horsepower, a difference of only 5 horsepower. The engine size of the 1.5L is a lot smaller than the 2.4L, and I just think that the 2.4 CRVs from 2015-2016 are the more solid and more self powering, maybe even the best crvs ever made but that’s debatable, but yeah I think just the sacrifice of 5 horsepower is worth it to have the bigger 2.4 engine. And I think there’s more headroom for more power with the 2.4. To me the 2015-2016s are the more solid and strong CR-V compared to the newer 1.5s. I believe the newest CRVs have an optional hybrid power train. Don’t know much about that but it’s interesting.
@brandondickie34562 жыл бұрын
2015 wasn’t the first time the CR-V had a 2.4L engine. The 2014 model and before then to a certain point I guess, had 2.4s but for the 2015 model year, they took the 2.4s that were in the 2013-2017 Honda Accords and used those in the CR-Vs. That accord/CR-V 2015-2016 2.4L is called a K24W1, part of the K24 series, it has direct injection and increased torque compared to the 2.4 of the older CR-Vs. Also the 1.5 turbos are known to have oil issues, likely because it’s a tiny engine being pushed hard by a turbocharger to meet the power goal of 190hp, which the K24W1 2.4L of the 2015-2016s, without a turbocharger, makes only 5 less horsepower. And you could probably get the same as the 1.5L’s 190hp, if not more horsepower, from the 2.4L by just doing a few affordable and easy performance mods, which probably wouldn’t cost more than $300 or even $200 depending on what you do. I’m not a fan of the CVT transmissions, but for fuel economy, they’re built for that. And they’re really efficient in delivering optimal power at any given time. Extremely smooth acceleration and no shifts because it has no gear, instead two belt pulleys, which is different than an automatic transmission which does have noticeable gear shifting. It also vibrates like a son of a beach, but that’s just part of the 2015 experience.
@naeemansari73694 жыл бұрын

I’ve never had a straightforward answer on it (asking if using electronics when the car is off wears down the car battery) I have a 1999 Toyota Camry and just had a quick question (consider it an average car battery). Usually before I go into school I sit in the parking lot with my car off, radio on at a comfortable level, and phone charging (this is probably for about 15 mins). I usually do the same thing during lunch (radio on for 10 mins. Phone charging for 25). Then after school I do the same thing for 15 more mins, then start the car and drive off. My car has never had trouble starting. I drive home about 5 miles going 35mph some of the way then up to 65mph probably 7/10 of the way, so the alternator most likely fully charges it every time since I’ve never had trouble with a low battery start. Am I doing more harm than good? Should I stop what I’m doing and leave my car idling when I do this instead? How bad does this affect the lifespan (or maybe it doesn’t?) of my battery? Thanks!

Any vehicle should be able to handle that amount of load your putting on your battery. The batteries do recover some lost voltage when they rest, but once you battery does start to fade you may get have trouble starting. Just keep an eye on how it starts and when it starts turning a little slower have your charging system checked out.

Yes, it does. Especially if the door light stays on sometimes overnight. People forget to fully close their doors and the light stays on. It kills the battery. In your case, it definitely kills the car battery if your stereo, lights...etc.

How long have you had your battery? If more than 2 years...be careful. If you are worried about the life of your battery...go get it load tested for free at an auto parts store and test the voltage etc. To get a true test...test the battery after the car has been sitting overnight. If the voltage is lower than 12 volts...consider replacing. 15 minutes wont do that much harm if the volume isnt that high. Go get your battery tested though. Better safe than sorry.

The radio and phone charger don't draw much current, so you should have no problems. The drive home should top up the charge on the battery and automotive batteries work best when they are only discharged part way before recharging. Tool batteries are another story, however. I used a 12 V charger to recharge my DeWalt batteries in my truck without taking my usual drive to get lunch and parts. When I went to start the truck to drive home, the truck battery was flat and I had to jump start it.

Get a volt ohm meter and check voltage before starting ; and after shutting off . Keep a record . Thinking about it , cars should have a digital readout ; maybe some do ? Anyway eventually you will notice it doesn’t make much difference ; unless it’s below freezing . Main reason to do this , it’s something everyone should learn .

It seem the German cars in the USA have much more problems that here in Europe... I have bought Audi, VW and BMW over my life and generally only have little problems over their lifespan with me... The only real issue I had was with a CVT transmission on a new Audi.. I sold it straight away and never bought another CVT vehicle... Also there are plenty of ancient, scrappy Audi and BMW vehicles running around on the roads.... I wonder why they go so wrong so quickly in the States?

We had a Outlander sport with a 5 speed manual. Great vehicle. Traded it up when it was near 100k and had zero issues. But ya wasn't a crap CVT that's for sure.

Thing is, if you're a mechanic people only come to you when something's wrong. CR ranks Mitsubishi at almost last, so.... yeah. Might be something to his advance on that one.

Hey Scotty, I'm being gifted a 1993 buick regal (not sure which engine) with 33K (yes) one 33k miles on it. It's in California and I live in Chicago. Should I drive it all the way back? What should I look out for?

I learned how to drive a manual on an Audi GT from the '80s or '90s, can't remember. All 3 cars (same model) were owned by my neighbor. All 3 are still are running. That tells me that Audi is capable but lazy.

Worth sinking real money into? No. Worth driving til it dies for real? Why not. Oil is cheap. Cars are not. I’d drive it the rest of the way into the ground myself if it’s already bought & paid for

I just bought a 1999 Honda CRV, manual trans with 100,000 miles (replaced motor) AWD... I love this car! It’s running rough though? It shifts well no other issues. I think it may just need spark plugs changed? It feels like something is shaking in the engine? Doesn’t have any leaks. It’s kinda loud in the cabin? I’m a female on a low budget. Any ideas what it could be? It starts right up w no hesitation. It doesn’t shake on the highway it just does it mostly when it is idling?

The other way to answer the question about the Canadian card at -15C is that no, wind chill does nothing to make a car colder than if there was no wind, if it has sat out long enough to already get down to -15C. If it wouldn't have gotten that cold yet, wind chill will accelerate the rate at which it cools down to -15C. Wind chill will also increase the amount of time it takes your defroster or defogger to become effective and how long it takes the engine to warm up unless you are driving the same direction as the wind. Having written that much, if it's not a terrible inconvenience then I would hook the heater up at -15C, but it doesn't get that cold here, does get as cold as -9C and I've never had any plastic cracking issues at that temp, though I don't have vinyl seats and am pretty gentle on a vehicle, letting the defroster get some heat into it before trying to operate it.

Scotty, how is a price of 4,200 for a 2007 Toyota Corolla on a car lot? Paint a little chipped on the front and bottom lights aren’t working ( I assume fog lights) otherwise seems in pretty good shape and drives good. ??? I’m 62 and have been watching your videos. Would appreciate your opinion. 🙂 price WAS 4,900. Said that 4,200 was the least they would take.

Scottie, just bought the 2017 Honda accord 2.4l sedan that we had leased. What's your opinion on this car, any thing we should look out for?
@MrTilbin4 жыл бұрын
I hate having to keep comment this. On European cars, you have to maintain them. If you regularly follow maintence and PREVENTATIVE maintence plans, they run just fine. I can't tell you how many times I got a shocked look when I asked "When's the last time you got (insert thing here) checked?". Honda and Toyota don't necessarily make "better" cars, they simply use the computer to control the vehicle and over build for what that computer let's the driver do. In Europe, they engineer the vehicles to be preak or close to peak, and leave it to you, the owner, to take care of the thing. First thing to check when your brake light comes on ( especially if it's low on fluid) is for leaks and pad life. Your brake system is sealed. As the pads wear, the fluid drops to fill the gap your wheel cylinders or calipers need to extend. NEVER TOP OFF BRALE FLUID. It's super corrosive, and when you do need brake pads or shoes, all that fluid goes back into the reservoir, overflows, and eats away at paints and coatings on your vehicle. And if you're so ingorant to cars you somehow think a scan tool is going to tell you whats mechanically wrong with your vehicle, stop driving. Not to mention if that was a "mechanics" go to is to scan for codes on not going into a gear, they really should just stick to oil changes. On the VW, the head is warped. You can't just replace the gasket with out checking that nothing is warped.

Any suggestion for vehicles with the least issues? I bought a 2014 equinox and Im so dissapointed to learn of the expensive issues the regularly have. I've had the car for 1 1/2 years and its already cost me almost 2k. I later learned how easy the cam shafts are to replace but what scares me the most is the pcv valve issues. Also I would love to see a video for replacing 2014 evap purge valve. No good videos out there for this yet. Any easy way to clean or avoid carbon buildup on that pinhole opening inside the intake.

Hi Scotty; My son lives in Chicago and has 2007 Honda Accord V6 with 20K miles. The car in garaged and recently replaced the tires and brake fluid exchange Are there any other fluids or maintenance he needs to do to his car that he bought new but doesn’t really use that much. The body is perfect and it runs great. He brought the car to the dealer service and they gave him a laundry list of things to do ($3000++) Any suggestions?
