Scared the hell out of me when I was like 6 years old. I didn't like Eric but the doll scared the crap out of me. Yes, it was odd how the doll could be places in spite of not really being capable of motion, how it laughed when Eric tried to damage it, how it threatened his life over the damn phone. It was like she became Eric's universe and it was closing in on him. And what was the noise Eric heard that caused him to get out of bed and look around? He seemed to suspect that it was the doll and, of course, had no hope of finding it before it killed him. But you have to ask, what animated the doll in the first place? What gave it that hatred of Eric? Rod pretty much says who that shadowy agency is in the closing narration: "...to a child caught in the middle of turmoil and conflict, a doll can become many things: friend, defender, guardian" and he might have added "avenger." Christie, the little girl, an undeserving victim of Eric's cruelty and indifference, is where the doll's power comes from. It hates Eric because the little girl hates Eric even if she doesn't consciously think so. She hates him and wishes he were gone and so the doll takes care of that. But then the doll turns on the mother at the end, letting her know that if she has any bright ideas about picking up where Eric left off, she won't be around long either. So, there must be a hatred towards the mother because she's weak-willed and does not stand up to Eric the way Christie wants her to. She just too placating.

Here are a couple of facts you may not know about Talky Tina. First, her name. Why was she called “Talky Tina”? Mattel’s talking doll, which was relatively new at the time, was called “Chatty Cathy”. “Talky”? “Chatty”? You get the idea. Next, why did Serling cast my old friend June Foray as Tina’s voice? JUNE WAS THE VOICE OF CHATTY CATHY! Rick is right about not seeing the doll walk, but if you should happen to catch an UNCUT version of this episode (you can generally only see it uncut when someone is running a Twilight Zone festival), when Telly Savalas hears that noise in the middle of the night, there’s a quick shot that shows Tina walking past the camera in silhouette. June was indeed a dear friend for many years, and my wife and I used to drive up to June’s place on Saturdays to visit her and go out to lunch, so we had plenty of time to talk about many of the things she had done. We spoke at length about this episode. June told me she’d had a BLAST doing the voice tracks for the doll! And if you listen to Tina’s lines, you can tell that’s true. You can practically HEAR the twinkle in her eye and the sly grin on her face! June said she had more fun performing that role than any other of the thousands of cartoons and commercials she did in her long career (She was also, among many other things, the voice of Rocky the Flying Squirrel, and you can hear her as Rocky on You Tube). June made it to 99 years of age before she passed away, and she had enough mementos of her life as a Voice Actor all over her home in the San Fernando Valley to fill a museum! She was a tiny woman at just four feet eleven inches, and yet these HUGE voices came out of her at will. I think about her every day and miss her terribly. She was the sweetest lady you’d ever want to meet. May God bless you, Dearest June.

For me talking dolls are always creepy but the evil intentions of this one is magnified by Telly Savalas who was never looked upon as a wimp. His characters fear grows right to the end and for me it built the tension that made the story work.

One of my absolute favorite episodes but a bit strange seeing Telly Savalas with hair and no lollypop lol Such a creepy mind twister of a story but I expect nothing less from Rod Serling's Twilight Zone! Telly made this episode feel real and the voice of the doll was none other than June Foray, the voice actress with loads of credits including Rocky the Flying Squirrel, Cindy Lou Who and Granny from the Warner Bros. cartoons! Always awesome Rick, get well soon brother :)

I always thought it was weird and unnecessary they made Kojak hold a lollypop. When you watch Savalas in other things, you don't even really notice the finger unless you try. Luckily, the gimmick caught on, to which I would credit him in both instances for being such an engaging on-screen presence.

I’ve seen this episode dozens of times since childhood and I’m over 40. I just watched it again with my mom a few months ago. Until you mentioned it, I’ve never even thought about the fact that the doll didn’t walk and there weren’t any special effects. The terror is totally in your mind and that’s what makes it so creepy! They don’t write like this nowadays. If this episode was made today, the doll would be running around doing outlandish things and it would most likely not be as scary.
@aviatortrucker6198
@aviatortrucker6198 2 жыл бұрын
If the dolls didn’t walk it was in the little girls bed how did it get on the stairs? However the blowtorch scene was very fake because you could see Telly Sevalis let go of the trigger every time he got the flame near the doll. The other thing is when he tried to saw the doll’s head off, the blade wasn’t near the doll it was rubbing on a brick which caused the blade to spark. There were a few episodes of the twilight zone where you could see some poor special effects but I guess that’s the way it was in the 1950s. The one with the episode called “The Machines”, where the machines take over and drive this guy out of his house. You can see when the car drives itself there is a shadow figure behind the wheel.

I think the the, "..and you better be nice to me." line was the bombshell moment that elevated this to all time TZ best contention. It not only solidified the reality that step dad wasn't crazy and Talky Tina is an entity, but also that "she" is not a very nice one if crossed. Reminiscent of Billy Mumy.

Rod Serling was a genius because he could scare us without any gory graphic scenes nor any cheap shots to make us jump off our seats. All the scary elements were mental, as it were. Serling planted a few cues and the viewers had to connect the dots. Nothing is scarier than what we make up in our mind and Serling knew it .

What REALLY made this episode scary for most people in 1963 is the fact that Mattel toys had come out with a doll called CHATTY CATHY which became hugely popular. Many dolls had the ability to say "Mama" but, Chatty Cathy would speak full sentences when you pulled her string. And just about EVERY household in the early 1960s had a Chatty Cathy doll. The Twilight Zone comes out with Talky Tina in 1963. Obviously, the name is based on Chatty Cathy AND the voice of Talky Tina is the SAME VOICE as Chatty Cathy - June Foray!!!! THAT'S what made this episode so unsettling for most people!

This is one of my all-time favorite Twilight Zone shows. The first thing we notice is Talky Tina’s voice, which was a parody of a talking doll which was sold back then: Chatty Cathy. June Foray worked magic with the voice. It was cute and cold, sinister and lovable at the same time. The doll is an inanimate object, and yet is able to give the little girl more love than the cruel stepfather ever could, and he knows it! He is hellbent on destroying the toy, and yet none of his machine shop tools will help him make it happen. On the little girl’s side, we have the mother who comes across as a bit impotent, which is probably the one character trait of hers that appeals to her control-freak husband. But the little girl needs no mother to protect her, not with Talky Tina around. It’s a weird dynamic flowing among the four characters. When Tina becomes instrumental in the stepfather’s death, it merely feels like the next logical step. But then, Tina begins to show her diabolical personality to the hapless mother, with a warning. “You better be nice to me!” This is clearly the most chilling moment in this tale, and repeat viewers live for those lines. I know I do! I hope you’re feeling better, Rick. Thanks for all the great videos! Keep ‘em coming!

That was not only a scary episode but it was one of the ones along the lines where Rod Serling used puppets and dolls. One of my favorites is “The Dummy” with the actor Cliff Robertson where he plays a ventriloquist and his dummy/alter ego gets the best of him. The episode also starred Frank Sutton who played Sergeant Carter on Gomer Pyle. This is I think the episode that inspired the 1978 movie with Anthony Hopkins and and Margaret with a ventriloquist dummy. I believe the title is called “Magic.” There’s also another one with a ventriloquist dummy called Caesar who makes his owner rob a pawn shop. I think the episode is called “Caesar & me.” It’s starred Jackie Cooper.

I have to say that you missed a tremendous bit of trivia, one of the reasons (in addition to her great voice acting skills) that June Foray was picked to be the voice of Talking Tina was because she was the original voice of “Chatty Cathy” a very popular doll. One of her greatest disappointments was that she did not get the chance to meet Rod Sterling.

Love the closing message in this episode where Serling says in part "...to a child caught in the middle of turmoil and conflict, a doll can become many things: friend, defender, guardian..." I found Telly Savalas' character much more frightening than the doll! The 2002 TZ revisited this theme in what I thought was a great episode: "Azoth the Avenger Is a Friend of Mine" where another toy comes to the rescue of an abused kid. Both Talky Tina and Azoth the Avenger sure end the abuse in a grand way in the twilight zone.

I understood this episode , as a fan of the twilight zone. Talky Tina who is really Chatty Cathy, has a lesson to teach the viewer. Rod Sterling gives the clue, and I understood that Talky Tina put Eric and eventually the mother in their places with a polite warning. Never make an issue when a child likes a particular doll. It made me notice that, there is no point living in a luxury house, where hostilities are a common occurrence.

She never really sounds menacing or threatening, and that's the most chilling aspect of her performance. On a shooting break Telly turned to me and said, in that voice - "hey, kid, get me a cup of coffee, will ya?" and I, wanting to be "cool", said "for a quarter I will!" and Telly dismissed me with a dismissive grunt and walked toward the craft tables. One of my favorite episodes as well. The best TZ episodes show stories that seem completely eerie and inexplicable, but real by inserting us into the characters POV. The direction is shot perfect and you're right, Telly really carries it. Also I want to mention my good friend Dorothy's father composed the score and his music adds hugely to the frightening atmospgere.

Rick, you hit the POINT. More was done by what was NOT physically done, rather done by the viewers imagination. The talent was from from both Telly & June, to execute the "illusion" This was the brilliance of Rod Serling. Don't know If you are a Disney fan. Adventures Through Inner Space (defunct) attraction from Disneyland (narrated by Paul Fries) another great actor/ voice actor. Inner is the most "missed" attraction. Star Tours replaced it. Side note, it was reproduced on internet during its infancy.

I could not agree with you more on the 'Abusive Step-Father' angle! one of the aspects of the TZ that made it such a cutting-edge program, was it shedding light on various social ills! (Something few shows were doing at the time!) & in this case the 'Monster' was not the Monster... but a bad person! Much like Stepen King & other Sci/Fi-Horror authors... Bullies are the one thing they REALLY can't stand!

They were called The Invaders and Time Enough At Last.The After Hours was about the woman turned out to be a mannequin in the end,in which was a chilling one ,but one of the best was Walking Distance in which I feel that I have lived a big part of this one and having bitter sweet memories of it.

It's really a shame that this is another wonderful but uncredited performance by June Foray! Just yesterday I was watching a clip from Bewitched where she's doing the "voice" of infant Tabitha just to spook Gladys Kravitz via one of Endora's spells! Hahaha!

Potential Spoiler Alert: This episode has a sorrowful undertone as to how Annabelle comments that perhaps it's because Erich doesn't like her daughter/his stepdaughter...that always stands out to me while watching. Also, it's one of 2 T.Z. episodes with a little girl named "Tina" (see "Little Girl Lost")...both of which, freaked out this Tina as a child, lol. I've long wondered if there was a reason Serling used 'Tina', twice.

I love this episode, you are right Telly Savalas really could play both likable & rotten characters to the hilt! But to correct you, in this episode Telly & the wife never came to a agreement to get rid of Talking Tina in fact the wife character defended the doll and felt her husband was just being mean, also the part of the dad blamed both the child and the mom for the dolls actions, insisting they were the ones carrying out the voices and phone calls. As for the Chucky character (which is possessed by the evil of a dying man) we know he was modeled after the real 80’s Buddy doll geared for boys. I love your channel keep bringing us this content.

I love this episode, one of my favorites! Yet whenever I watch it, I kind of feel sorry for Eric. Sure he's not exactly a nice guy or a good parent, but at one point it seems he is willing to be reasonable and give in to keep his wife happy. He certainly doesn't deserve the cruel torment Talky Tina is giving him. Quite honestly, if a doll started talking to me like that, I'd probably want to dispose of it too.

Annabelle is probably a coincidence although perhaps a creepy one. The movie Annabelle is very loosely based off a real life doll by the same name and has nothing to do with this show.

This is definitely one of my all time faves! I do, however, contend that Talky Tina tripped Eric down the stairs as we see her in bed with the little girl in the cut before and you hear those gears grinding which makes Eric get up to investigate. BUT I can see your perspective of this all being in his head... until that last bit of dialogue from Tina! 😱

I was born the same year as The Twilight Zone, so I've watched it as reruns for most of my life and continue to do so. Yes, this is one of my favorites and as with all, this has highly skilled actors making the best of a brilliant script. As with most TZ episodes, there is a moral lesson and here, the issue is child abuse. Talky Tina is not evil, she hates Eric because of his cruelty to Christie, his stepdaughter. The idea of a doll "living" is creepy, nonetheless. Then, the concept of Talky Tina not being evil changes. She did kill by being on the stairs where Eric stepped right on her, causing him to fall and then her warning to Annabel in the end tells the viewer that this mother and daughter are going to be stuck with a creepy, evil doll forever. But the fault remains not with the doll, who was Christie's defender, but entirely with the abuser.

Well this was one of the really scary episodes of the series in particular near the end when Telly Savalas hear's the mechanical noise of Tina at first he enters in Christie's room where you would think Tina would be right next lying next to her she wasn't there. He continues hearing the noise and suddenly on about the second or third step down on the top step there's Tina in her moving motion as Eric takes the next step down he steps on her and suddenly trips and falls head first all the way down the steps and then Tina follows him as she falls all the way down laying right in front of his face and suddenly he falls dead on the floor with a broken neck Annabelle (his wife) screams in horror as Eric is lying prone on the floor Dead with Tina lying next to him as she picks up the doll to see if there was anything she could do for Eric who was already dead Tina suddenly opens her eyes and looks directly at Annabelle saying: My name is talking Tina....AND YOU BETTER BE NICE TO ME! Annabelle in stuned horror remembering the warnings Eric gave her about Tina in slow-motion suddenly drops the doll following that ominous WARNING and then Rod Serling gives his final summation of the episode: Now we all know Dolls can't talk nor do they have the capacity to commit murder. But to a child caught in the middle of personal conflict a doll can become many things friend, guardian, protector. ESPECIALLY a Doll like Talky Tina who did TALK...and did commit MURDER🩸🩸🩸 in the misty regions of... The Twilight Zone.

To me, the creepiness is heightened by Savalas NOT being a completely evil character (more stubborn and obsessed) so his fate is not so satisfying. Also the doll ends by threatening the mother who is entirely innocent. The only purely evil character is the doll, who has inserted herself into and has taken control over the family..
