The Confederate battle flag was raised over the South Carolina capitol dome in 1962 as a symbol of defiance of the Civil Rights movement. In 2002, a compromise in the state legislature moved the flag to a Confederate war memorial in front of the dome, with the United States flag and the South Carolina state flag replacing the Confederate flag atop the dome.
In the wake of the June 17, 2015 massacre at the Mother Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC, lawmakers including both US Senators and the governor of the state (all Republicans) asked the legislature to vote to remove the flag from state grounds as a symbol of healing, unity and inclusion.
On June 27, 2015, Joshua Lee Gilmer, founder of the Defenders of the Confederate Cross called for a rally in support of keeping the flag where it is.
Eric Byler of Story of America interviewed him as the rally was beginning.

@Garrison Nichols That isn't true in 99% of the cases. In instances of education, artistic expression, journalism, and scientific context there are no limitations upon it. There are likewise no limitations upon the National Socialist flag whilst in private. The point of the law is to prevent insurrection, which are ruled as anti-constitutional. Three year sentences are the maximum sentences and reserved for rare cases that typically involve a targeted violent crime. IE, shouting "Heil Hitler," and assaulting a Jew. The same is true of ISIS iconography and the Communist Party of Germany. The Soviet flag isn't banned, as far as I'm aware. The consequence in rare instances in which a court rules that the act was in breach of 86a is typically a 100 Euro fine, not jail time. Most violations are met with about a 100 Euro fine. Regardless, is this the evidence that Europe isn't free? Because Germany has some modest anti-insurrection laws?

Sorry, but in this case there is definitely a right and wrong that we-- the people of today's society-- get to adjudicate. Slavery was wrong. The defense of slavery well after most States of the United States had seen the light and abolished slavery was wrong. The Confederacy was born out of the desire to protect and expand slavery even beyond that. We need not defend them any more than we would defend out ancestors that committed human sacrifice or child rape-- both are a part of our human "heritage" too. Yet we somehow feel that we can't make the same moral judgement we make on the people who committed those acts on our ancestor that engaged in or enabled slavery. Why? (hint: because racism is still alive and well and colors our thought process on that).

Both of you are actually partly right. History is written by victors. The south had slaves, i believe some of the north did as well. Slavery is not believed to be the main cause of the civil war. The south wanted to keep slaves. However, the North isn't pure good as divisions of the Union army committed heinous crimes. Neither is everyone of the southern side bad. The slave topic seems to give the North the moral high ground, but you can't ignore individual reasoning.
@HawkAnomaly
@HawkAnomaly 4 жыл бұрын
@@wiardikijne5158 id argue most of the north had slavery like the south did. the biggest tragedy about history is that people believe that the north was inherently against slavery at that time. its been proven that if they could get the south to reunite early on before the civil war then slavery had a good chance of being abolished far closer to todays time frame than it did back then. Abe lincoln wasnt even against slavery and was definitely racist. he only did what he did to help fight against the south.

So, this guy will agree, on camera that "slavery is wrong" and "racism is wrong" ... but he somehow can't make the cognitive (and historically proven) leap that the Confederate Stars and Bars is a leading symbol of slavery and racism, by way of starting as a flag of the Army of Northern Virginia and then becoming pretty much a symbol of the entire Confederacy. You need only read the first few sentences of the secession papers of each of the 13 CSA states to see what the "real" reason was behind the Civil War, and why the CSA was (still)born in the first place. And this is in THEIR words, not an "interpretation" of it by outsiders. And while he says only 6% of the CSA soldiers were slave-owners, that only proves that the rich, plantation-owning slavers simply managed to convince the poorer people to fight against their own self-interest... much like Trump has managed to do today to get people to VOTE against their own self-interest... and other politicians have also managed to do. They can claim that "they weren't involved" with slavery all they want... but then, why do they continue to uphold this symbol of slavery into the 21st Century? One last thing... if South Carolinians and other southerners are so concerned with their "heritage"... why is it they cannot find another symbol... *any other symbol* that represents the South, and ALL it's people in a positive way ... that has no ties to secession, slavery and bigotry? They can't find ANY other symbol to rally behind that is unmistakably NOT about slavery and the Civil War? That is ... telling.

I'm glad the Union won and I'm completely certain it had the moral right with both emancipation and the defence of the it's own wholeness. The flag doesn't offend me personally, but I do understand why it might others. If this were about banning the flag, I would agree with the protest, but it isn't. It's about taking it off a local government building. Replace it there with Old Glory. Keep it in historical contexts and education about history. Fly the flag that won, on government buildings.

Now read the Cornerstone Speech and the CSA's Constitution. It is pro-white supremacy and slavery just like the KKK and like it or not, that is what the flag ultimately represents as not only is it in the speech and their constitution but also because they specifically fought to preserve those beliefs under that flag which they then lost. You can disagree all you want but you'd be disagreeing with the actual Confederates at the time who said so themselves what the beliefs and intentions were of the CSA.

The way we frame history is important. I grew up in Kansas (bloody Kansas, Civil War battleground state, Yanks). We were taught that the north was "good" and the south was "bad." Now that I've grown and read more, it's way more complicated than that. Yes, the Civil War was very much about slavery. Yes, the south wanted to keep their slaves. Yes, the north wanted that squashed. However, I find it very unlikely that at that time in history that the north wanted to abolish slavery because it was "just" or "moral." They simply didn't like the fact that the south was prospering because of all that free labor. Now, the end product was good and we finally abolished slavery. But we've always made the north out to be heroes because they were anti-slavery. I'm just not so sure they were anti-slavery for the right reasons. I just think the moral stuff came as a byproduct of an economic fight. I guess that was a bit tangential, but it made sense to me when I started writing it. LOL

Very well spoken. I’m sure many who are actual descendants dislike racism and came from non-slave-owning families. And even dislike modern-day forms of racism from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. No issue with anyone claiming heritage or freedom of speech. But its meaning is historical. It has no modern day meaning other than what it represented which is a defunct Confederacy that not only embraced the institution of slavery, but stood for western expansion with slave states. The perpetuation is in the Confederate Constitution. Because of this, the stigma of slavery is indelibly associated with the flag as well as Southern heritage that can be traced back. Yes, it’s a first amendment right and there is nothing wrong with preserving history. Otherwise, it has no modern day use and does not need to be displayed by public institutions or government buildings. The museum, Civil War re-enactments, and private citizens use are about it. To say that it contains zero racism is ignorant. It is a product of a period in history where a group of people were marginalized. The flag didn’t do this, the ones who it represented did. Whether it symbolizes hate or heritage is purely a matter of perspective as it can be in both categories.

As a Brit, from Liverpool I know a bit about the civil war, the south since the defeat has had a narrative of miss information about what the war was about, ie not slavery but about their rights and the north bullying the south. I have read Alexande H Stephens cornerstone speech prior to hostilities in 1861, this conflict was about slavery full stop. The city I and my ancestors grew up in were major backers of the southern course, Liverpool merchants didn't care about slavery theu were happy to get the cotton as cheap as possbible to keep the mills in Lancashire weaving. As for monuments, I believe 90% were erected in the 20th century, the reason I believe was 'to let those black folk know who was in charge and don't you forget it'. The flag and the monuments are symbols of oppression, learn history from a historian and not from a drunk uncle, thats my philosophy. Why is there a controversy? As South Carolina and other States legally seceded from the Union, the North invaded the now-Confederacy for control of southern cash crops that fed the US Treasury (to the tune of 70%), secured bank loans as collateral, supplied northern industries with raw materials and, across the Atlantic, supplied their industries (The Industrial Revolution) as well. Three non-Confederate Sources: English author, Charles Dickens, author of A Christmas Carol and Oliver Twist: "The Northern onslaught upon slavery was no more than a piece of specious humbug designed to conceal its desire for economic control ( cotton and other raw materials) of the Southern states." This short telegram, from William Tecumseh Sherman to Abraham Lincoln, is dated December 22, 1864. “I beg to present you as a Christmas gift the city of Savannah with 150 heavy guns and plenty of ammunition and also about 25,000 bales of COTTON,” Sherman wrote. In 1924, the US Federal Reserve issued their report on the History of Cotton. Please note in 1800 there was no cotton production. By 1850, COTTON supplied 53.36% of the Treasury's funds. By 1870, COTTON supplied a whopping 60.28 %. fraser.stlouisfed.org/files/docs/publications/FRB/pages/1920-1924/26396_1920-1924.pdf The North invaded the Confederacy for control of southern cash crops and the money it supplied. For 160 years, the North has hid behind Four False Causes or UNCONSTITUTIONAL LIES! 1. Secession is illegal 2. The South rebelled 3. Preserve the Union (Treasury) 4. Slavery - legal under the Constitution: Migration and Importantion Clause, Fugitive Slave Clause, 3/5 Compromise Clause, 4th Amendment and 5th Amendment and 10th Amendment.

Only veterans and ex-Veterans will understand why serving ur courtry is honor. The civil war was caused by one word, succession! Not by slaves that was only part of a long list of things. If u know ur history? The 13 southern joined the United States voluntarily. So the southern wanted to resign there place in the Union. The United States told these states they could not quit the union. So the southern states said F U we quit. Which the north thought as an act of war! The Union wasn't all that innocent. In the beginning they would not pay black soldiers the same pay as whites. They were not given combat rolls in the beginning just logistic support. Not to mention years later segregation existed in the US MILITARY. Till about the mid 40's . when Eleanor Roosevelt convinced her husband to change this. Hence that's why they had buffalo soldiers/ the red tail Tuskegee airmen etc.

The south had some of the best commander's of the war.. The south lost due to logistics and lack of a Navy. Logistically speaking the north had better navy and better weapons. Anytime ur home is at war where u are from ur family is??? U will defend it. Slavery was a political battle cuz they were the only one's that would be effected by free slaves. Only politicians and the rich could really afford them. I'm anti slavery but anytime a person dies for what they believe is honor. Just look at the san patricios? They were irish immigrants who left the American army to fight on with the mexican army in the mex American war. ”Not simply”. The slaveholding states we're being left out in US elections. Lincoln was elected without winning one southern state. As the US expanded west, the Southern States wanted the majority of new states to become slave states. They wanted a voice in elections. They also wanted to keep their slaves. The South wanted to keep slaves! The south was hoping England would help them during the war! England refused because they would not side with a ”country” that kept people as property. The south chose not to free their slaves. The war was fought over slavery. I am very sure that many common Confederate soldiers did not fight to uphold slavery. They fought for MANY reasons. All you need to do is look at the ”articles of succession” by southern states. Most of them clearly state that it is their right to keep slaves and they will leave the Union to do so. Look it up. I am a civil war re-enactor that flag the Confederate flag means that flag is a flag of the South that flag means the United Confederate of American it also represents the flag of the United States of America because it has the red white and and I'm proud to be an American because I love my family treats me like a like a rebel and I do both flags the United States American flag and I I also respect the Confederate because deep down inside we're all Americans and the Confederate soldiers that have died carrying that flag the civil war that flag

Austria, Netherlands, France, Taiwan, Thailand, Britain, Costa Rica, Cambodia, and Norway all have the colors red white and blue. I guess those are all American flags too by your logic. No we aren't Confederates deep down, Confederates are the ones who were a terrorist organization that broke away from the United States to preserve slavery.

As a Canadian, there are two reasons for me to "defend" such a flag. The first reason is that events like Nascar, shows like the Dukes of Hazzard, and wrestlers like the Fabulous Freebirds gave the Confederate flag a cool name. Such shows and events made the original racist meaning of the flag too insignificant to warrant any real protest. And two: Despite it being clear that the Confederate flag was first established with a racist meaning, I have to admit that the flag DOES look cool painted on clothing, cars, and other such items.
