The Mossberg is favored by the military. The 870 tends to be favored by the police, though the Mossy is well represented there as well. I own an 870 . I don't favor it over the Moss. I just happened to get one at a nice price at the time I bought it. This is really a Ford-or-Chevy type discussion. You won't go wrong with either.

Mossberg has long-since established itself as a great shotgun maker over the decades. Years ago it was considered a "poor-mans" shotgun and the choice of buying a Remington over a Mossberg was an easy one but today just about everything Mossberg makes is excellent. Remington is also a fantastic choice but personally I love Mossberg because of it's overall value.

+Mike Hawk Mossbergs have the smoothest actions I've ever used on shotguns, and in terms of actual use, take the longest to cause failures as a result of fouling the action/getting a metric butt-ton of sand in them. I liked em even better than the vast majority of the Benelli's I was issued.

Alec8183 Depending on the Panzer. Assuming you are talking about the Panzer III and bigger, the wee little shermie wermie is no competition. Allied soldiers called the Sherman the "Ronson" after a brand of cigarette lighter of the name because of the tanks' flammability. The brands' slogan was "Ronson lighters light first, every time!". So yeah, maybe choose the t34 or Cromwell or something instead to go up against the Panzer. However the Panzer I, II, 38 and 35 light tanks would probably lose even to a Ronson. Wow, this was an overly informative piece of text. I'm turning into a biased and boring WW2 historian rambling on into the clouds and then getting shot down by British AA (or rather when someone gets triggered over me spitting over the Sherman so much).
@anotherrandomtexan25
@anotherrandomtexan25 7 жыл бұрын
Mister Miney I'm sorry but no, the only Sherman's that would light up so much were the early ones before they started using wet ammo storage and it was in many ways actually superior to the pz 3 and even Cromwell to some extent (at least in it's early days idk bout later on) it had a more powerful gun than any of the pz3 variants (other than the TD versions and even then might not being of a stretch) and was proven to be more reliable than the Cromwell look up "myths of American armor tankfest 2015" or something along those lines it has A LOT on the subject and others

Hi, again. I was a deputy sheriff in Arizona, and mostly a self-trained combat shotgunner, with some valuable help from my firearms instructor. In 1988, at the Police Olympics, in Casa Grande, AZ, I took a bronze, silver and gold medal in small bore rifle with an antique Savage single shot bolt action rifle. I respect your opinion on the shotguns, and the fact that you like the Mossberg lightens my heart. I have fire both quite extensively, and I much prefer the Mossberg over the Remington. I have a considerable problem with the controls on the Remington, because no matter what I do, using them is uncomfortable and slow. The slide release and the safety on the Mossberg, to me are ergonomic. When I was in the academy, we had to use their shotguns, and guess what? Yep, Remington 870s. The first time I fired one, I ended up with a black eye and two cuts from my glasses, because my thumb hooked over the stock and smacked me a good one. with the Mossberg, the thumb is out of the way, and as you pointed out, the pump lock is operable with the second finger. I have yet to see a Remington anywhere in Arizona that hadn't been subjected to Dremel surgery. The spoon, or lifter, allows shells to get under thee spoon in stress situations, and this is usually remedied by cutting a slot in the spoon. If a shell ends up under the spoon, any key caqn be used to get the shell free. I don't care for that. I can operate a Mossberg in a SWAT Combat Shoot and never look at it. Add in the dual action bars instead of a single, and that is the police shotgun I prefer. As far as an alloy receiver goes, you can buy a polymer receiver for the AR-15 and build your own. You are a great teacher.

Both are excellent shotguns and you can't go wrong regardless of which one you choose. I used a Remington 870 back in the 1970's and it was THE gun to have back then. I got a Mossberg 500 back in 1985 and loved it but didn't know how well it would hold up over time. I've owned it 30 years now and have shot it A LOT. Later on I bought a 590 but the 500 still does it's thing, and that was a $99 shotgun back in the day! Doesn't matter if you you buy a Remington or a Mossberg. Either will do the job.

I've had my 870 for about 30 yrs now & have pumped at least 5,000 shells thru it without anything more than a standard cleaning , I absolutely love the feel of an 870 , perfect balanced weapon with a perfect feel when you hold it , I've owned the mossy several times & ended up giving both to my son's because they don't have the right feel to me , I use my 12's as slug guns & nothing comes close to an 870 with a slug barrel .

I just LOVE the look of the rounded bolt on the 870. Such an iconic and minimalist shotgun. Nothing makes me feel safer than riding on horseback around the property with my 870 in hand when there’s been a wolf or cougar sighting and I’m checking up on the livestock. My 870 was my first shotgun purchased back in 2016, then I got the classic Winchester Model 12, and then the legendary Ithaca 37. Goodness I love those old school pump action shotguns.

I walk with my gun in safe, shell in chamber, and flick the safety to off when I throw the gun to my shoulder. It's in the same movement. The top safety is simply faster and more intuitive to operate. Speed is key in a lot of situations and especially when hunting birds or other small game in high and steep terrain.

I liked it for that reason as well, but I recently learned that if you were going to do a slug change over youre going to lose more rounds than you would if you had a Rem 870. Reference the dynamic art of the shotgun to see this in action. Its a badass DVD.

if where the safety button is placed is the deciding factor for purchasing either of these guns you are a very uneducated buyer obviously. why not do some research and base your purchase on some features that actually deal with reliability or how you like the internal workings of which gun better, upgrade options etc... something that actually matters.

Love your videos, very informative! If you take a fully loaded 870 and wrap two fingers around the mag tube where it attaches to the receiver, then hit the slide release and slide the slide back until it hits your two fingers, the round in the chamber will gently pop up out of the chamber so you can remove it without having it fly through the air. Then push the elevator up out of the way and continue the slide all the way back to the receiver and the first round in the mag tube will come down and can be removed. Now hit the interior catch on the left and the next round will slip past and you can remove it. Continue last step until follower is visible. You have now emptied the gun safely and in total control and you look like a professional.

I lean towards the Mossberg for the reasons that Hickok mentioned specifically the shell elevator. Mine is a Mossberg Maverick 88, same as the Mossberg 500 but with the safety mounted on the trigger group. With a 20 inch barrel and 8 shot capacity for under $250 it's hard to beat. Out of the box it's really good as it is but if one was wanting to do some work, a +20 Wolff magazine spring with a drilled aluminum follower really helps the shells fly out of the tube. I also use a soft felt wheel on a Dremel tool with Mothers Mag to polish out any casting flashes on the action bars, shell elevator, the bolt especially the where it makes contact with the lug lock for smoother action and less galling; the key is polishing not metal removal. Another trick my dad taught me growing up is that if you are ever having failures to eject with a smoothbore pump is to take a cleaning rod and a brass brush wrapped with super fine 0000 steel wool with a little oil and chuck it into a drill and run it back and forth in the chamber of the barrel to polish it. What often happens is shell expansion and heat causes it to hang up so encouraging a smooth surface helps with reliability and friction. Have fun and stay safe.

Great video as usual. Enjoyed and agreed with nearly every point you made. I own 2 870s, a 20 guage Wingmaster and a 12 guage express(I was a starving college student, what can I say? haha). I qualified with and carried a Mossberg on combat patrols in Afghanistan. Love em all. It took some repetitions to get the muscle memory switched over to the Mossberg's controls as you mentioned, but it was never an issue. I've never pinched a finger loading 870s though and automatically refresh the mag tube on the fly when hunting without looking or thinking. I actually kind of like the spring resistance on the Remingtons spoon, but that's probably just because it's what I grew up with. Both guns are rock solid reliable and proven and I wouldn't hesitate to get either one. I didn't need the same repetition to get back on the 870s and I don't think it'd take the same to get back to the Mossberg either now that I've "lived" with it. Just know what you're carrying. If given the choice, I probably opt for another 870 because I love them or wait, a Mossberg because I don't own one yet or wait..........yeah no bad choices here. Slugs and buck are FUN to shoot. The watermelon was the piece de resistance. Saved the best for last. Thanks for the review and comparison.

Actually, aluminum alloy does have a weakness in that aluminum when it reaches the end of it's product life will fail catastrophically unlike steel which will show wear and tear before it fails. It is standard procedure in engineering when using aluminum to calculate the product's life cycle and when it should not be used beyond that designated time frame. At some point in the future of a Mossberg 590a1, its aluminum receiver will fail. It may be 50 years or 100 years, but it will happen. And with Murphy's Law being what it is, it will happen at the worst possible time.

My first firearm ever was the Mossberg 590A1. Impulse buy. Had no idea what I was buying. Told the clerk I was looking for a shotgun and that's what I walked out with. I liked it. Wish I had watched this a year ago. Seems I am a shotgun savant for picking the Mossberg. Always good to know what experienced owners like and use. Since then I thoroughly researched all my subsequent purchases.

Back before we all switched to ARs in our cruisers we relied on slugs in our 870s to increase range if needed. I was taught something about an 870 then that I’ve never seen taught or demonstrated since: With a chambered round and rounds in the mag it’s super simple to eject the chambered round without advancing another round onto the feed ramp and into the chamber. Simply unlock the slide and bring it back in a *controlled* movement to where it’s 2 fingers from the front of the trigger guard. The round in the mag won’t come into the well (pretty much the same effect as ‘short stroking’ the action). Reach into the well with your strong hand thumb, push up the feed and simply push the round in the mag forward a fraction of an inch. You’ll hear a click, which is the feed mechanism resetting. You can now pull the slide all the way to the rear,ejecting the chambered round WITHOUT feeding a new round from the mag into the chamber. With the slide all the way to the rear, you can choose to close the bolt on an empty chamber or drop a slug in the chamber and run the slide forward, ready to go. This is way faster and less fussy than picking a chambered round out of a half open bolt AND allows that bolt to be completely opened to drop in that optional choice of rounds. Also, with practice it can easily be done with the gun at high ready, without taking your eyeys off the target. To my knowledge, the 870 is the only pump gun that allows this manual of arms. It’s the reason I chose it over the Mossbergs.

I went through this a few years back, and finally decided on the 870. For me the big selling point is that I like the M4 buttstock and pistol grip. The control set on the Mossberg makes it difficult to work the safety in that configuration. With the buttstock collapsed and the 18.5 inch barrel, the gun is pretty compact and is good for home defense and close quarters applications. Mesa Tactical makes a great buttstock set for either gun. I am awaiting the recoil buffer tube. Should be in tomorrow's mail. If recoil is a problem, then the Federal Tactical reduced recoil rounds, or other equivalents, are excellent at the ranges that most people would use a weapon like that at. However, the reduced recoil rounds are probably not as good at distance. Might be interesting to see a video showing what they will or won't do at longer ranges.

michael neely This video was actually the deciding factor, when I bought my Mossburg 590a1 USSM. I have taken it to the range 3 times and every time I gain more satisfaction each time I fire it. The Remington has an equally good reputation according to my personal cohorts. I almost picked up the 870 but the 590 just seems superior in every way (I have the exact same one as Hickok. Parkerized. 8+1 capacity. Easier to load without cutting one's thumb on the shell elevator. As for the shell ejector shell hickok pointed out, its easliy replaced if broken some how vice the 870 having to be sent to manufacturer or gunsmith to get fixed. Lower in price as well. The sight does suck though, but there are 590a1 versions with ghost rings and front sight posts (check the 590a1 SPX).

Having carried a 500 on patrol many many times, as well as worked on 30+ 500's and the same number of 870's as a armorer, I can definitely say that I will NEVER buy a 500. Started with 30+ as said, ended our deployment with 4, my personal one never worked right and broke multiple times. On the range maybe, trusting my life though, ill take an 870. The 500 was given to the military as a cheaper replacement to our 870's for a reason.

The only way they could be fixed was back at th factory, or, a gunsmith having to make the repairs like something similar to side-projects. Freedom Group FUCKED Remington. I'll stick with Mossberg! These are both good guns, but i started on an 870 my cousin gave me as my first gun that wasn't a .22 and i have stuck with them since and love them. Personally, i think the 870s are smoother, the loading gate coming down doesn't bother me, nor does it pinch me, and i don't think it is a huge deal breaker. Also, if you are looking to buy an 870, i would suggest getting a pre freedom group model, that would be pre 2006ish. I think the fit/finish and quality is better. I have owned 2 express mags, currently own 2 wingmasters, one from the 80s and one from the 70s that i cut down into a scattergun and got a smoking deal on, and i just put a Marine Magnum on layaway. I love my 870s, the only other shotgun i would own or ever plan to own is a Benelli.

Guys, what's your opinion about the Mossberg 930 (semi-auto) ? I live in Brazil, in a rich area, and almost every house in my street has been robbed, I wanna buy a gun for home defense now, but it's a long and bureaucratic process here for a civilian to buy a gun. For civilians it's only allowed: 2 short guns (.380 pistols or .38 revolvers), 2 long guns (shotguns) and 2 carbines (but not an AR, more like a .22 lever action). So I was thinking, a .380 isn't enough so if I'm gonna buy something it will be a 12ga, but the ones made in Brazil are good, but not as good as the ones that are imported, but so far the only legally imported shotguns here is the Mossberg 930. So, what should I get, a Mossberg 930 (4+1 semi auto) or a pump action CBC (brazilian made 7+1 pump action)? Is the mossberg 930 a good gun?

felipegames12 don't let people talk you out of any caliber. .38 or 380 is perfect for defense if you're a good shot. Hell, I could defend my house with my .22 if I had to. If you get a huge caliber that you can't comfortably and accurately shoot, it's useless to you.
@felipegames12
@felipegames12 10 жыл бұрын
Robert Wood Yeah but that's the idea of a .12 you barely need to aim with it, just point it at the enemy's direction and you'll blast him with a buckshot. And I don't know if I'm a good shooter, I've never had any guns. A single .380 shot to the chest probably wont kill, will it?

870 is my weapon of choice but my 870 is an old Highway Patrol trade in that was made in the 60's when they did things right. Old steel and even the trigger guard is at least metal. It is now a Scattergun Technology conversion with Trak Lock sights and Armor Tuff Burnt Bronze finish. Good advice on deciding on a pattern or particular shotgun make. I did that 30 years ago....870. Thirty years ago the Mossberg 500 were rattle traps and jammed a lot. We deer hunters in the circles I ran mostly used the 870 here in Ohio back in the day.

Not being a gun guy, I have watched these Mossberg vs Remington videos over the years and not given too much thought about which is better. Up to now they both were more or less the same for me. Watching this again today and paying close attention to the differences he mentioned, there is a clear winner for me here, which is the Mossberg. It is more of an AK type shotgun - simple and practical, easy to maintain (for example, replacing the extractor with only turning a screw and taking it out vs involving a gunsmith for doing the same job on the Remington). Just my two cents - from a guy that's not a gun person but is considering his options once the gun license gets approved.

To be completely honest I wouldn't trust my 870 for any home defense. Could just be my shotgun but it doesn't extract too well and like jonnebanan said the trigger guard safety. in my opinion the Mossberg's much easier to see and sometimes I forget to put my 870 on safe because its not in plain sight. Never had a problem with a Mossberg and its much smoother than the 870.

I purchased the Mossberg 88 just for fun at a great price point for home self defense and added on the 18" barrel that Mossberg sells for the 500 that fits perfect. I also like the fact that a lot of the 500 accessory parts are interchangeable with the 88.The 88 shoots great and my kids love it.Mossberg also has a great warranty on their guns. Had an ejector problem and when I sent it in they returned it with a brand new ejector and even replaced their 18" barrel at no cost. I have since shot close to 500 slug and buckshot loads through it without a problem.

+VladSparr 95 Because it's an island and there ain't a whole lotta woods left. If you happen to own one of the portions of it that still has forests you're probably a rich man. On the other hand here in America, there's a whole lotta places you could find a plot of land like hickoks.

Have had a Remington 870 since I was 16. Never have I gotten pinched by the lifter.

My dad told me a story about how when he was 18, which was about 40 years ago, his father bought him a Remington 870 Wingmaster. A year later after a day of hunting, he put the gun (uncased) on top of his car while he put his stuff away. He then got in his car and drove home. While on the highway, he happened to look in his rearview mirror to see his gun (still uncased) skidding down the pavement at 60 mph. He, in his great brilliance, picked the gun up, loaded it, and shot it. It worked flawlessly. He never brought it in for maintenance, still uses the gun today, and has never had a single issue with it. I like to run my fingers down the gouges in the steel and wood. Nothing will convince me that Wingmasters are anything but the best gun to buy. Mine is exceeding my expectations.

Great video! Both shotguns are great...but the Mossberg has a better design.

+Calvin Lippert not really the Mossberg has the upper hand in safety and action release which alone can save you a second or two In a defense situation and can save your life. if you didn't notice he talked about the positioning of those the fact the extractor can be changed in your home. you can load shells while loading easier. the only good thing he said on the 870 was the sights.

Hi Hickok, and John, I have been a huge fan of yours since the .44 mag at long range video when you shot it at 230 yards, which was very cool!!! But I (digress), I still very much appreciate your videos, and I know that I speak for most of the folks that watch your channel!! So thank you and John, and God bless you both!!!

If you want to put a pistol grip stock on your shotgun, then buy an 870. That is one of the only advantages the 870 has. The Mossberg comes out on top in almost every other conceivable category.

+Semper FI tactical Are you in the Coast Guard? USMC uses both the Mossberg 500 and the 590a1 as well as the Benelli M4. The Mossy 500 was the only shotgun to pass the US Army endurance tests. I use both the Mossberg 590 and a Remington 870. The 870 is my goto wing gun. The 590 is my first choice for a self defense scattergun.

+Semper FI tactical - "mossbergs are about $200 new theyre cheap" You mean the maverick 88, which was purposely made at that level of quality to be affordable? If you're going to compare the 870 to the 500, then compare it to the 500 or the 590/590a1, not the purposely cheap maverick 88. - "870's are the high end, reliable, heavily modifiable and combat ready shotguns. theyre more expensive ($550) new" You can find 870s for a lower price then that and 590a1s for a higher price then that. - " function smoother, very low maintenece and extremely durable for all combat environments." Both the 870 and the 500/590 are low maintenance and durable. Both are smooth to pump, but if you believe the 870 to be smoother then so be it. - " thats why majority use 870's as well as i do." The majority of who? That's not very specific. More 870s have been produced, but almost as many mossberg 500s/590s have been made as remington 870s.
