When I took up the game again a couple of years ago, being in my mid-50's I figured I'd give the Adams A12 OS clubs a try mainly because I'd tried some budget hybrids and liked them and the Adams set came with 4.5,6 hybrids. I now play to a 10 with the same clubs and can hold greens really well with the hybrids. I'm looking to get back to a 5 and 6 iron with my next set but will still carry 1 or two hybrids depending on the course. Can't recommend them enough to replace the long irons and/or your 5 wood.

Awesome video, great to see an everyday golfer on a launch monitor and to see just how big his dispersion is. I bet mine would be horrific! I think this shows just how much most people would benefit from working on their strike consistency rather than trying to achieve or live up to a certain distance. It's definitely my biggest struggle as I'm a short hitter with every club and wreck my swing trying to keep up. If I could get a consistent strike and a consistent distance with all my clubs then it wouldn't really matter if I'm playing a hybrid or a 6 iron towards the green.

As ever Gents an excellent Vid that will resonate with so many of us. Also loved the mild pep talk and therapy session when you validated Sam`s new ability to hit high launching 2nd shots with his new hybrid! I didn't realise that you Guys were Councillors as well as club fit Experts!!!!!! Personally I ditched my 3 & 4 Irons several years ago and currently use a Ping G30 23deg Hybrid, which I find so much more flexible on long Par 3 & Par 4`s. I am also considering putting a Lower lofted hybrid in my Bag to replace my 3Wood which I can`t hit and only puts me into the rough!

Really interested in your Sandy Lyle comments. I grew up watching Lyle hit his 1 iron 250+ yards down the middle (a long way in those days). I would be very interested in a driving iron fitting for someone with average swing speed. One assumes modern heads and shafts will get your average golfer to Sandy's old numbers.

Love the video! I think the more important lesson here, is not to overestimate your length. He clearly can't hit a 4i 185 yds, and should have been hitting a bunted 3w or 5w if he didn't have a hybrid in his bag yet. And that's on a mat, likely to be even shorter off grass.

I did a lot of work on this and for me, with a 24 degree, standard 38" length Mizuno Hot Metal Pro 5 iron (weakened 1 degree from spec 23 degree), I use a 22 degree GAPR Hi #4 increased in loft by 1 click = 22.5 degrees) and cut 1" in length from spec 40.25" to 39.25" (this would is 1.25" longer than a 5 iron or basically the length of a spec 3 iron at 39"). The combo of 1 more inch length and 1.5 degrees loft equals 1 club in distance / 10 yards longer than my 5 iron. The most critical part for me in my fitting was not specifically length but descent angle into the green. When I hit the #4 GAPR club as stock, I would get 40-44 degree descent angles - I wanted 45 degrees because I absolutely wanted to be able to play it into a green - bumping it 1 click higher in loft did exactly that for me at my swing speed (Driver 105mph) and it gave me that high long iron type club that I wanted - it's now my 195 to 205 carry club and I love it! My long hybrid is the now older spec Callaway Epic #2 18 degree Hybrid - again cut 1 inch. I've experimented from 17 degrees to 20 degrees and the standard 18 is just enough loft to fade it into a green and stop and it also is fantastic off a tee to carry 230 with a knuckleball type hit - the average carry, playing 1 inch longer than my #4 GAPR and 4.5 degrees less loft is 15 yards - and spaces perfectly between my GAPR and 3wood.

I noticed that Sam had approximately 29 swings on the monitor, but you only showed the results from 11. I guess it does take time to adapt to a new club, so a few had to be eliminated. This, however gets to the heart of my comment. Us higher handicaps (I’m around 16) have inconsistent swings, and while the correct fitted club does provide better results on some below average swings, I believe, enough of us on enough occasions produce quite bad swings. I wonder how much of a difference we will see on our handicaps? This is not meant as a criticism, as I’ve watched all your videos, and as I stated on a previous message, you and Tom Wishon get to the heart of fitting that truly resonates. I’m only bringing this up, as I’ve gone onto the course with only 4 clubs on several occasions, and produced quite similar scoring, as I do with 14 clubs. I’d still like to get fitted, because I also believe that a few more quality shots provides more confidence also, and hopefully that’s where more improvement comes in. Appreciate your vids.
@clubchampionmedia
@clubchampionmedia 6 жыл бұрын
We eliminate the shots that are just not relevant or beneficial to the fitting (i.e. if a player tops a drive, badly mishits, or any other uncharacteristic outcome). Fitting can definitely improve consistency, but in every fitting there's bound to be shots that a player (of any skill level) hits that are of no benefit to the fitting process. We're looking for patterns and tendencies that can be addressed with clubfitting and provide the player with better performance. Hope that answers your question!

Great job once again guys! This video is making me consider to try a hybrid.....currently playing a 4i which I hit pretty decently, 5w & 3w both of which I am very inconsistent with. I tried hybrids a few years ago but could not hit them for some reason. I felt like the hybrid head looked too much like a wood, which made we try to swing more level vs. down. For mid-high handicappers, from what you typically see, are hybrids more consistent than woods?
@clubchampionmedia
@clubchampionmedia 6 жыл бұрын
It can vary, but generally speaking the shorter shaft and higher loft of a hybrid versus a fairway wood should be easier to hit for most players. You might just need a good fitting my friend! 😆

Another great video. Really appreciate what you guys are dong. I would like to see a video on fitting a 3 wood for a slower speed swing golfer. I am a 71 year old 8 handicapper with a 93 mph driver speed. My swingpath is in to out , and I just cannot hit the 3 wood high unless I try to come over the top and play a cut shot. Any suggestions for three wood heads or shafts which might help? Thanks.
@clubchampionmedia
@clubchampionmedia 6 жыл бұрын
Probably a 4 or 5 wood would be a better choice Kenneth, the extra loft will allow you to get more elevation without changing your swing. Look for large profile wood heads i.e. the Ping G400 stretch

My swing speed is 100mph with driver, a bit lower with irons. I bought a used 3 hybrid with a Lite flex shaft. I hit it really well, straight, long and consistent. Whenever I try to step into a stiff shaft I don't hit it as well. The shop i went to trying to buy a newer set insists i get stiff. Any problem swinging a light shaft if it works? I'm 35 years old, don't think i need an old man lite shaft, but i can't deny the performance and comfort with it. I hit my 3 hybrid Cobra F7 with lite shaft about 235 yards.

Good video. Not much talk about the choice of head for the hybrid. Obviously, the Rogue is forgiving and gets the ball in the air. Any other reasons why you went exclusively to that head? Was it a head/shaft match? Thanks again, gentlemen.

Because you matched the loft of the hybrid to Sams current irons would you suggest he doesn’t pull the trigger on it until he’s fit for irons as well? New irons may have stronger lofts so that 24* hybrid may not gap as well with newer irons?

With the advancements made in graphite shaft technology, there's really no benefit to going with steel. Even if you look at PGA tour players, many use graphite shafts in their hybrids and driving irons. Maybe try a different profile or heavier weight shaft in that 25º

In Sam's irons fitting, you had him go 2 degrees upright to hit the club more square. I've recently been fitted for Mizuno JPX900 Hot metal irons, 2 degrees *flat*. What's the equivalent of 2 degrees flat in a hybrid? I notice you didn't mention lie angle during this video. Is there something about the design of a hybrid which makes lie angle irrelevant? Thank you!
@clubchampionmedia

Most hybrids and fairway woods are at a fixed lie angle. Some, for example the Titleist line, can be adjusted for lie in conjunction with loft changes via the adjustable sleeve.

Hi Guys, As always, another great video. I have a question, I'm 66 years old and I have one more kick at the cat. I would really like to play for another 4 years at a competitive level. I know I'm capable if I can get another 15 yards with my irons. My handicap jumps around anywhere from 20 to 12. I had to stop golfing for ten years and I went back last year, I had 11 rounds in the 70's, and they were mid 70's on a par 70. My question is, would it make any sense in me investing into a set of Miura golf clubs and get fitted properly. How much approx. would a set of these clubs cost in Canada. Thanks very much Barry
@clubchampionmedia
@clubchampionmedia 6 жыл бұрын
Miura irons aren't necessarily your best option if you're looking for another 15 yards, a set designed for more distance like the Taylormade P790's would likely be more suited to what you're trying to achieve.

Great video again. Was the hybrid used set to standard loft and neutral? Or did you move it to a draw setting? I have Callaway Epic 3, 4, 5 hybrids and 3-wood and 5-wood all set to D/S (2 of these have to come out of bag). Do you like draw setting with hybrids? These along with my 5-iron from my iron set are too many to carry. I struggle with finding the right combination to put in bag. Right now 3-hybrid and 5-iron are out. Can you make it easy for me and give me a general idea of which irons, hybrids and woods overlap distance-wise out of this group of clubs? Is a 5 and 4 hybrid too close? My 7-iron goes 150+, my 5-wood 200 at best, 3-wood 210+ and Driver 225+. I hit hybrids and woods pretty equally. 11 index handicap player. Thanks.

@wallstreetoneil
@wallstreetoneil 6 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking, pro level type players, struggle with 'most', not all hybrids, because they have been mostly built with the high handicapper in mind with almost a built in anti slice help to them - and thus would make a neutrally hitting pro level player draw / hook them - and with a long club 200+ yard type club, a hooking long club can get into lots of trouble. There are now pro-type hybrids which address this and that is why you are starting to see pros and better amateurs starting to use them. In fact, if you are a British links type player, then the driving 2 iron type club is still very common in that part of the world - but even there, you are starting to see very adjustable Titleist 818 type Hybrids where you can really dial in the anti hook type shots.
@clubchampionmedia

For some players, nothing, only gains from using hybrids. For others (generally higher speed and more consistent players), they may lose some workability in their ball flight.

I'm getting one tomorrow to replace my 4 iron. Never been a fan of hybrids but I hope this one doesn't go left on me all the time.

Roy if it does go left on you , change the hossel setting to B1. this will flatten the lie and move it to the right for you. I actually play mine in this setting for just that reason.

Thanks Miguel, will do. In fact the option to flatten the lie angle is exactly why I wanted to give this hybrid a chance.

i am a shorter guy 5'5''. i struggle with longer clubs not getting in the air and hooking a lot. i tend to have to open the face and hold of to get it in the air and straight. any idea what length i should be playing? i play ap2 712's now standard length and 2.5 degrees flat.

A shorter shaft would likely help influence your swing to be a bit more upright and limit that hook and increase the height. How much exactly you would need to test, but start with -1/2" in testing if you can.

and why I'm blades to 5 then one high and one low lofted hybrid. All the GI clubs have such jacked lofts that they are actually harder to hit on the 5iron upwards plus if you mishit a GI club it goes miles - into trouble! A mishit blade you just lose distance and not your golf ball.

Great video guys! So how do you decide where to start using a hybrid... I see most players replacing 3 and 4 irons with hybrids, but when would you recommend someone replace their 5 iron with a hybrid, and leave the 6i as the longest iron in the bag? Is it just comfort level of the player, or are there some parameters you use to help with that decision...
@roykullick5273
@roykullick5273 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony, of course I am not the expert here, but whenever you see the difference in yardage drop of between irons then that is the right spot to change to hybrids. If you find that, for example your 5 iron doesn't really go much further then your 6, then swapping in hybrids from 5 iron on is a good idea. It all depends on your swing speeds and if they are sufficient to launch certain lower lofted irons.

Yeah, that's kind of where I'm at... trying to figure out gapping. I have about 10-15 yard gaps in carry distance between clubs from PW through 6 iron (P-124, 9i-136, 8i-150, 7i-162, 6i-173). Carry distance gaps above 6i start to close up a little (5i-185, 4h-197, 3h-200, 5w-210). I can get my 5i out to 185, but become very inconsistent with it much like the video here.. Although I feel I have the distance and club head speed to use the 5i, I am considering switching it to a 5 hybrid for better consistency and forgiveness, and eliminate the 3h all together since I hit my current 4h better, and the gap between them is pretty small. Will seem odd having the 6i as my lowest lofted iron... and you don't see many 5h clubs with stiff shafts on the used market.. so thinking it's rare for stiff flex players with stronger swings are using 5 hybrids.
@roykullick5273
@roykullick5273 6 жыл бұрын
5 hybrids with stiff shafts are indeed probably hard to find. But if you can find extra consistency by going to hybrids after your 6 iron, go for it! This game is hard enough, even for us stronger swingers :)

Roy Kullick agreed! Plus I don't have a high trajectory, which is exaggerated in the low lofted irons... ill have to just have to find a 5h and give it a few rounds

It would be much more helpful if you would leave the data up long enough to read it and digest it. much more helpful than constant talking heads.

Data without the "talking heads" is just a bunch of numbers on a screen, most people watch the videos for the insight. You can also pause the video at any time to view the numbers for longer.
