Thanks so much Reekontools! It was fun to see how this amazing piece of tech works. Thanks again for the opportunity!
@jimyoungblood16876 ай бұрын
Good review. I have both devices. I found the Acegmet's laser measure to be almost useless outdoors, since the range of the red laser is greatly reduced in sunlight. So, although it will measure up to 330' with the laser, the only place I would ever need 330' is outdoors and the red laser fails just beyond 10'. Acegmet should have switched the green tape laser to red, and put the green laser in the laser distance measure since green laser has much better range in sunlight. Also, the Acegmet requires visual interpretation of the screen when using the tape measure (you have to read the tape on the screen), while the Reekon interprets the measurement for you. Both are amazing evolutionary devices. Reekon is expanding their device offerings, making all of them bluetooth connected for a very amazing professional arsenal of advancing and speeding construction processes. Both of these devices present excellent advancements for the visually impaired.

Thank you so much for sharing this Jim! Really appeciate it. Sounds like you have some experience with both which is great to hear. Thank you so much for sharing the your experience with the acegmet outdoor capabilities. I'm a tech geek so these were fun to take. a look at. Not sure they will get much use in my shop but love to see the latest tech out there! Thanks again for watching and sharing Jim!

The laser (red) is only used to pinpoint what you are measuring - it does not have anything to do with the actual measurement. That is typically done with infrared which you can't see. All cheap laser tapes fall flat on outdoor measurements. Check out the Bosch Blaze 400 for a true outdoor laser. I use it for setting concrete forms.
@jalejan7728 күн бұрын

Great review. One category you missed would have been durability. A good old Stanley can take a drop on concrete from a good height. I can replace several for the price of one of those.

You know after filming this video I actually did end up dropping the reekon on my concrete floor. The frame of it chipped. I had to CA glue it back together. I was very disappointed by this and will be sharing this in a future video.

Finally I got around to finishing watching, yes life got in the way yesterday.... all good. I kinda agree with your cousin an old school Stanley can do everything I need. In fact I just bought a Stanley 16' yesterday, the big old Fatmax was way more than I needed for most of the stuff I've been doing lately. Have a great long weekend.

Great job Bryan. I thought I was great when I bought the fastcap flat tape the allows measurements around round objects and along curves. I also have a lufkin tape that tell you the center without having to calculate. These two are in a whole world of their own. Expensive, I think I’d rather have some other tools before I get one of these tape measures.

Eye-watering prices, definitely for the construction / remodelling market. The fanciest tape measure I own retails for about £12, and I wouldn't even have one that posh if it wasn't included in a promotional bundle with some power tools. Couldn't you try persuading Goingmake or Gohelper to bring out a knock-off of the Reekon for $29? 🙃🤪
@FlynndoggWoodwork6 ай бұрын
Haha! You aren't lying Probably be a few years before we see some knock offs of these tools. They really do have some nice features, but definitely more for contractors, or poeple working on the jobsites. It was fun to take a look at them, but probably will collect some dust in my old shop! :)
@peterconnolly27246 ай бұрын
Price? High. But doable if the functionality is there. But it isn't. For long distances, over 6ft... I use a laser measure. For those, I feel that Bosch can't be beat - $100. For short distances, I've even given up on 25ft measures as being too big. I have a bunch of 9ft DeWalt tape measures scattered around the shop. Between the two, I have all my measuring needs covered. I'm not seeing any killer application for either the Reekon or Acegmet.
@FlynndoggWoodwork6 ай бұрын
Good points Peter - It was fun to look at but not for the everyday woodworker. I'm a tech geek so I like to check out all the latest toys. I like the good old fashion tape mearsures. If I'm measuring rooms I've really found I like the laser distance meters. Out of the two the reekon rock app is impressive. But you dont need the tape measure to use it for many of its best features. Thanks so much for watching!

As a woodworker I don’t think either of these offer much benefit over the tapes, rules, squares, and calipers I currently use. First of all they’re too big. woodworkers generally don’t need to measure great lengths. We have rules, squares, calipers, etc. that lie flat and make marking and measuring simpler and repeatably accurate. I think these tools you’ve shown are much more effective for carpentry like a framer or finish carpenter. Just my thought. Also, woodworkers don’t really need more accuracy than 1/16” or 1mm because of wood movement. Most tape measures i’ve used have a hook that moves so you can measure both inside and outside measurements. This movement is more than 1/32”. Not sure you said anything about the hooks on these devices. After saying all of this, i’m kinda like the Tim “the toolman” Taylor character on Home Improvement. I’m a tool geek. More power, more features, oh, oh, oh, oh. Thx for another great tool review🎉
@FlynndoggWoodwork6 ай бұрын
Haha! You are 100% correct mwoody! I agree with you on all points. These tools are definitely beyond the scope of a woodworker. Fun to take a look at, but probably not too practical for day to day use. Maybe a great carpenter or home builder tools but too chunky and cumbersome for me! Thanks so much for sharing and thanks for watching. I'm a total tool nerd tool (part of the reason I like looking at tools like this! :)

Brian, as always, great video and great comparison information!! Good Job! I do have a question that's off this topic, though. I live in a house that is 100 years old, this month. It has lathe and plaster walls. Is there a stud finder available that will take that information into consideration when looking for studs, i.e. a stud finder that will look beyond the lathe and plaster and find the studs?

Oh that is a great question and one I've never thought about before. I'm actually not sure. I'm wondering if that contraption I've seen commercials for can do it. I got 2-in-1 DTM from Acpotel, but didn't like it. It didn't seem accurate IMO. I assume both of these DTM were accurate?
@FlynndoggWoodwork6 ай бұрын
Great question and I should have covered that more. I did not notice any inaccuracies with either tape measure. I have a similar tape measure to your acpotel, made by mileseey. I think these tools have some good intentions but for woodworking I think they are just a little too complex. I like to pull the tape measure out further than the measurement to see what I'm measuring which none of these tape measures really allow you to do. If anything it was interesting to see these tools. Thanks for sharing your experience on the Acpotel. I think all of these digital tape measures have that issue.

the generations have lost the ability to use a tape measure, along with other tools, and it's things like this that contribute to the problem, we need less tech and more common sense.

Lol, if I were your boss, I'd fire you. I'm going to want exact results first time, everytime. Technology gives us that and gives it to us quicker than scratching it out on a napkin. Manual math is fine for roughing out a design or slapping something together but when I've handed you a $60,000 project with a tolerance of ±.0001", and I catch you trying to manually math it instead putting it into a computer and letting it do all the calculations for you- you're done. No way I'm letting some dude who thinks his paper math is more accurate than a machine programmed to compute the exact answer in a fraction of a second, is getting close to it. Technology has also opened up an entire world of precision and functionality at a much lower cost of operating than hiring a specialist who's going to spend a year precision making a part or piece by hand when it could be done in a matter of minutes. If you want to manual math, I'm gonna have you roughing out stock or sweeping the floors.
@dannydaugherty5276 ай бұрын
@@lawsonshawnm all I can say is you better hope computers never go down, if that's the way you think, I worked at two companies that relied on computers and they were no better than a tape measure, and in construction, a regular tape is fine as long as you know how to use it, also you will never be able to use your computer in a RV or trailer factory, the computer is ok for machining but not construction.

My only thing is that owners have way higher expectations than they used to. You could be a master stick and hammer framer back in the day with just your bags a tape a hammer a square and a saw. Now you need a pickup trucks worth of tools even to become an apprentice. An we are expected to produce even more then ever and the tools ain’t cheap either.
@raymondbernhardt76172 ай бұрын
I completely disagree. Should we go back to using only the sextant, compass, or stars to navigate?Yes you should know how to do the foundational stuff if things fail, but you should not be using them on your day to day. What it seems like you are talking about is a lack of training and development. Having a tool that improves efficiency and effectiveness from all levels seems like a good step forward. If an apprentice does not know how to read fractions on a measuring tape, that is the teachers fault
