I (a social 7) often reframe as to avoid the reality of the situation. You are totally right- the “positive” is not always positive. Great video!

This rings true for me. I’m a two and I suspect my husband, who is emotionally abusive, manipulative, suffers from addiction, is a 7. We are divorcing, but I’m trying to piece together the truth of our relationship as I repressed so much of the bad. I definitely go into rescue mode and ignore my needs which only increases my resentment.

I co-taught the Enneagram for 20 years in California and feel you have a very solid approach and understanding of the Enneagram. The subtypes add another very crucial understanding to this study.

Thank you! This means a lot to me! And I agree about subtypes 😃

This is so true of my partner (9w1) and my brother (7w8). They both do this. And when things are really not fine, oh man do they just head straight for the stress arrow. My brother starts calling out what everyone should be doing, and what's wrong with them, and my poor partner starts spiralling into all the worst-case scenarios that are about to happen, and there's nothing we can do about it, because disaster is inevitable. The best I can do for them is to help them come up with a plan to make it all better or avoid it entirely.

I love that I found your channel! I used to live in Arizona and I miss it so much. Do you ever hear of anyone struggling between a type one and a type seven? That’s where I’m at. I identify with more type seven stuff but often my motivation for things is “because it’s the right thing to do.” I don’t know if it’s because I’m a Christian that I have that motivation or if it’s my core value. Almost everything else points to a type seven for me.

This makes total sense. I'm a 7 with a 6 wing. I'm what is called the counter type. That 6 wing is always trying to rein in the negative aspects of the 7 ( I know you want to do the fun thing but shouldn't you do the responsible thing or the right thing?) The struggle is real. Also 7 goes to 1 in stress so keep that in mind. .

Being a Christian myself, I totally get why you type 1 resonates with you so much! But, I think if you look at the enneagram chart, the type 7 goes to type 1 in times of stress, while type 1 goes type 7 in times of growth. This could be a reason why you seem like a 1 or a 7 at different times. I know Hillary McCaskey has a couple videos about the arrows and what they mean for each type, so maybe those videos will be helpful to watch. Hope this helps!

The key to the question: Am I a one or a seven lies with how you deal with conflict. Sevens hate confrontation but ones are a lot more in your face and righteous.

I don;t even want to say how many times I've watched this trying to figure out what I want to say here. The Positive outlook group. I definitely have done my share of avoiding my own pain....the Queen of reframing most definitely. I also am burdened by the needs of others, especially when I don't think I can do anything to help or "fix" it....and when people are always on the opposite side of optimism, I can be not so patient with them (have I mentioned my Mom is a 6 and my daughter is a 4? lol). I used to always look for the good in people. After trying to help someone for more than 15 years, pouring love, time and money into this person, she ended up being the instigator in my husband of 30 years leaving me. I think that's when my "once bitten twice shy" mode set in. I find myself more often looking at people with suspicion and sometimes being downright cynical (which scares me). That's not who I'm supposed to be.

Any 279s out there, I wish you good luck. What do your struggles look like? Hanging onto hope and positivity like y'all is one way I'm looking to grow right now.

As a 9 I can definitely say that I try to avoid things that bother me by just shoving them aside -so I wish. Actually, in my 40s and on my journey to self-discovery, I've come to accept my anger as it is, and NOT shove that aside at the expense of my self-esteem. A question to all 9s: when coping with disappointments, do you outwardly display ease and say it's alright, no problem etc., but internally yearn for a remote plsce, a cozy blanket, a few bars of chocolate and a good scream/sob?

Is it natural for me a type 8w9 but with some w7 with family and friends, to love you and your channel and the channel of a Type 7 w8 more than any other ennegram channel ? Your work is awesome.

I am an 8 and a challenge or a problem delight me to act . My husband is a 9 and when I say there is a proplem, he panics saying : what proplem ? not again , be positive ! Me : Oh man , for me it is a delight, something to push against and grow.

But this isn’t for all type 2s, 7s and 9s right? Because I know someone who’s a type 9 but isn’t really positive these days at all (or for the last two years). Mostly because her in laws have made it a bit difficult for her but curious to know your thoughts on this (she’s not always seeing the positives in others)

Yes, this is true for all 2, 7 and 9s but it's going to depend on their level of health and this can look different depending on that.

_rain pouring from the heavens_ Pain. It is all I know. The darkness, truly my own friend, that is all-- _record scratch_ Stop, stop, stop! No, no. Who paid for this camera crew? Where did this rain come from? It is almost 80 degrees outside. Seven, look. I get it. You're the fun guy. You want to have a good giggle, connect with others, I get it. What I need is brooding. Like, Batman, but more. If you want to stay out of the box, you are going to have to get used to the fact that no one likes you. Even I don't like you. _pats Seven's shoulder_ Yeah, no one likes you. I know, it is tough, but you have to accept it. The sooner you accept it, the sooner you can see 4, 6, and 8 in their cells. That's right, I kept yours with all of your little nick-knacks and that one thing you really liked that helps you identify with... what is that word again? Oh yeah, "feelings." Go on now, go scoot before I get all stern and upset and put you in the box. Oh, who am I kidding, I am going to put you in the box anyway. _freeze frame to us laughing_ To be honest, when I am on my game and out of my brooding headspace as a 5 _(hooray depression symptoms)_, I can certainly get that 7 going. The only problem is that it bleeds into too much optimism and too much blind trust which can feed into the depression cycle again if I feel let down which... _looks at the clock_ Goodness, I am overdue for being let down! I think I will build myself up for a good, stylish breakfast and then lament my poor choices. Anyway, where were we? Oh yeah, that trust loop. That's the tough thing with that Seven in place. I want to see the good in a lot of people, but I have seen the darker side of individuals in my own life so I have to keep my Seven down for his own good. And in no way do I enjoy stifling my Seven for my own enjoyment. Nope. Never. _mule kicks the box_ *_Shut up, Seven!_* No one asked you anyway.
@enneagramandcoaching3 жыл бұрын
Like Batman but more...😂 I hear you on the too much optimism and it leading to be let down. That sometimes is the sucky part of life. As a 9, I can totally relate but when I get let down I’ll usually reframe it and feel better. But that’s not always a healthy way to go about it. Anyways, like always thank you for putting a smile on my face with your story telling ways. Although it does sound like you’ve experienced and been through a lot of hard...im sorry for that. Thank you for sharing your journey and always being so authentically you.
@MatthewEaton3 жыл бұрын
@@enneagramandcoaching Indeed, it is not a healthy way to go about it, but when I say I have seen the darkest things a person can do, I mean I have experienced it myself. I won't go into details, but to sum it up "nicely" is that my mother sold me into slavery for a week to make ends meet and my father replaced me with another son once he found out I was "broken." These things I always have to wrestle with and it always skews my view on optimism itself. It is hard road to walk, but I am attempting to try to get near the neighborhood of the county of... _shudders_ ..."feelings." Ew, ew, ew! Ick! Now I gotta go put Seven back in the box again.
