"This is a homework, homework. If you can't answer it, your problem, ddaeng" Some kpop companies created a whole task force somewhere around 2017-18 to study BTS, the fandom etc. to figure out 'the secret formula' for their success so they can use it to replicate BTS' global success. It's safe to say they didn't succeed at that since no other group is touching BTS' achievements. Jhope is saying that it's ironic that the ones that were called 'flops' are so big now that they're dumbfounded from BTS' success. These haters have so much time because they don't have anything to do other than hate bts. He ask's their reason for hating bts & that their problem is 'ddaeng' or 'wrong'. In the chorus they mention the game seotda. Seotda is not a game of strategy or skill. Rather, Seotda is a game of emotional warfare and mind games whereby looking like you hold the best cards and betting like you have nothing to be afraid of is the key to winning. Or sometimes the key to winning is utilising your opponents’ egos by looking meek and weak to indicate you hold an average hand (when you actually don’t) in order to rope in other players so they continue betting thereby raising the pot to your advantage. this is, as you can see, a parallel to the meaning of the song ddaeng. Rapline compared this song to ddaeng as in the beginning they were so called 'flops' and ppl didn't pay much attention to them but soon enough they realized bts's talent and they began gaining success and their talent was getting recognized. ''누가 끗발이 좋던 간에 -No matter who had influence 나는 땡 전혀 상관 안 해 -For me it's a ddaeng I don't care at all'' Now here Suga uses a clever word play. '끗발', pronounced kuparr (?) means influence or power. Its often used as slang in korea to refer to someone who is powerful or very successful. The origin of '끗발' comes from the word 끗/'kkeut' which, once again references Seotda. 'kkeuts' are one of the most common hands you'll get in Seodta. So, here Suga is saying that a kkeut is kkeut. It is pathetic and he doesn't care about kkeuts who are the haters because he's a ddaeng which is a higher hand in seodta. ''Hunnit bae hunnit bae hunnit bae hunnit bae 땡 이 음악은 똥이야 bae -This music is shit bae 배알 꼴리겠지만 bae -Although you may feel offended bae 니 주장이 다 맞아 bae -All of your claims are correct bae 우린 망해가고 있네 -We are failing'' In “Come Back Home,” BTS’ remake of Seo Taiji & Boys’ 1995 song of the same title, RM raps “hunnit band hunnit band hunnit band,” which means ‘$100,000, $100,000, $100,000.’ The same lyrics can be found in Childish Gambino’s “This is America,” which was BTS’ favorites at the time of their Love Yourself: Tear US promotion(2018). The haters are 'bae' here. Now, when you first hear the lyrics it seems like suga is repeating what the haters are saying and mocking them but there is actually another reference to hwatu here. In hwatu, the best month is 11(november) because it has a kwung card and another powerful card. Each month has 4 cards. These '11' cards are affectionately called ddong 똥 which is directly translated to 'shit'. Why name a powerful card 'shit'? Cause the pictures on the cards represent a tree called Oh Dong 오동 tree. Hence the word “ddong”. So, when suga says 'this music is shit' he is using a word play by referring this music to the best month in hwatu. Thus, by insulting their own music, there's a double meaning behind it that means the exact opposite saying their music is actually 'the best'. IFurther in lyrics Suga he is sarcastically mocking the haters, thanking them and saying its because of them they 'failed'. He also wishes that other smaller artists from small companies who like him don't have much privilege but have many haters are able to become successful. '계속 걱정해주길 -So please keep worrying 끗 -kkeut' This line also has clever word plays and could have 3 different meanings. 1. This 'kkeut' could refer to the rankings in Seodta and because 'kkeut' is the most common, the line could mean "so pls keep worrying, losers(lower rankings)". 2. 'kkeut' also means 'THE END' so the line could also mean 'pls keep worrying about us, THE END' which is basically a mic drop. 3.The term Kkeut also gave birth to this famous Korean phrase “Life hangs on the difference of one kkeut” 인생은 한 끗 차이, which means 'even if life dealt you shitty cards, you can still win it all in life or lose it all if your hand is just one kkeut higher or just one kkeut lower. That one kkeut makes all the difference in life. For example if you’ve been dealt a 5 kkeut you can still win against a 4 kkeut.' So the third meaning is that even if we're having by one kkeut, bangtan will still always win it all by that ONE kkeut which will always be on their side. Also love how RM calls out the rappers who don't seem to have haters because you can only grow when you have people hating on you and trying to stop your success thus giving you even more motivation to break through and improve. He tells them to look in the mirror and that they are their own hater and should self criticize their every move and mistake giving themselves motivation to succeed. Rest of RM's verse was very well explained by DKDKTV (cr. for lyric analysis - @kaitfluffs on twt)

And to add. Doolset bangtan has more in depth analysis of the lyrics. This bit I’ve copied below from there for a deeper meaning to when Suga raps ‘hunnit bae hunnit bae hunnit bae’... In “Come Back Home,” BTS’ remake of Seo Taiji & Boys’ 1995 song of the same title, RM raps “hunnit band hunnit band hunnit band,” which means ‘$100,000, $100,000, $100,000.’ The same lyrics can be found in Childish Gambino’s “This is America,” (2) Although they are not really noticeable when listening, the lyrics have slight variations: bae (baby), bar (a sentence in lyrical hip hop songs or a slang for money/bill), bbae (business before anything else). So it does go even more in depth and recommend checking out doolset website 😊

The stuttering is understood from the lyrics/context: RM was imitating how hypocritical/cynical people sound when they speak to them. I mean people (mostly from the entertainment industry) who were cruel to BTS when they were small, but try to kiss their feet and act as if "we've always been friends" with them, now that they are big : when they act as they have never humiliated them or badmouthed them, while asking favors... Or when they apologize insincerely, just to save face... They stutter, because they're afraid/insecure/dishonest.

@@jiminslostjams5989 My favorite thing about "Joke" is the title because it reminds me of RM classifying it as not being about anything serious, yet as you say, it puts haters in their place quite nicely... Found the quote on btsdiary.com: "RM: ‘Joke’ is a song whose lyrics were written with a stream of consciousness. That’s why the title is called ‘Joke’ as well. There’s nothing hidden behind the lyrics. It’s 500% for the auditory pleasure of rap songs. Since the other songs have messages or emotions placed into them, I felt that it was necessary to add in a refreshing song without any thoughts. Love seeing your BTS reactions ☺️ If you’re interested in checking out another totally different side to BTS, I think you’d really appreciate Spring Day (especially because you seem interested in the symbolism/psychology they use in their lyrics and videos). On its own, it’s a beautifully written song, but the MV is (and I don’t say this lightly) a cinematic masterpiece. The MV pays tribute to the victims of the Sewol ferry accident and is also very politically bold. The MV is chock full of cultural references and symbolism, so most people recommend watching the MV first, then watching a breakdown. If you’re interested, check out the links below, but be warned, I’ve never seen a reactor make it through the breakdown video without tearing up. It’s tragic but beautiful MV: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnbId6WCiNCAo5o Breakdown/explanation: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqrIYoKEe8p-n9U

The last one introduced each member, their background, examples of their songs, how many songs they've made, each member on a profetional level, and more. Don't worry Toney, that stutter part is MY favorite part of the whole song as well. I love this song in its entirety, it's a freaking masterpiece but that stutter verse just gives me LIFE. Also, Ddaeng was one of the songs the boys released FOR FREE on Soundcloud, just as a "thank you" to ARMY. Shows the kind of quality, thought, and deep appreciation they have for their fans, just in the one song. And they do this ALL the time. Especially for their birthdays - they like to put out free songs to show fans love for their birthdays. There is also a behind the scenes for this performance where it shows the three of them working on the production of the song, as well as their rehearsal before the performance. They performed the song live at one of their many ARMY appreciation performances (they have yearly Musters and Festas which are essentially just them showing love and appreciation for their fans), and they just have fun, do skits, wear funny costumes, interact with ARMY, and perform songs they normally don't perform at concerts (like covers, free songs they put out on Soundcloud, and B-sides).

Loved this. Always enjoy watching with you. 💜 2 things. The billboard mentions come from the fact that once Billboards started recognizing BTS, Korean antifans started Downplaying billboard itself. They gave them a paper award and that's not valid, so on so forth. 2. Butter is a derrogatory term Asians use to diss Asians who become americanized. After Dynamite, BTS started getting disses and being called butter in their turf. Thus BUTTER. So as much as it is a complete vibe and a celebration, it is also a clap back to people claiming they have become too "americanized" 💜👑💜 kings! I think these are awesome facts that are not well known.

Yoongi has all the pent up aggression when he's on the stage. One of the things that makes him hypnotizing. Personally, I live for his spit fire raps and his deadpan humor. The music he's produced over the years, too! Every track is different, but it still feels very Yoongi somehow.

DKDKTV focuses mainly on explaining cultural references and language subtlety that you can't get just with a normal translation, double meanings and the like. Their "Explained by a korean" series isn't really made to explain bars, but more to translate and explain those subtleties for foreign fans :) I think he didn't break down the stuttering part because the translation is more straightforward on that part: you don't necessarily know why he's stuttering or what he's referencing but it's not because of the language barrier. As it is, the stuttering is mocking all their peers who were hating on them and shitting on them when they were small, and who now come up to them to suck up and tell them they love them while stuttering and not being able to look them in the eyes ^^

I love this song probably one of my most listened to BTS songs. In this performance they were wearing Hanbok which is Korean traditional clothing. I love RM's verse, so savage but super calm, fanning himself showing the haters they are so far below him. Another song you should check out and do the DKDKTV explanation to after is *Baepsae* (also callel 'Silver spoon' or 'Try hard' or 'Crow Tit' (crow tit is a small bird and direct translation of baepsae)). Great song great live performances and great meningful lyrics and great attitude.

Suga is also AgustD with the songs AgustD and Daechwita. RMs popular is Joke and Do You. And JHope's Daydream and Airplane. All of them have mix tapes. That are amazing and deep. BTS is definitely not a shallow group of men. And thier music is, like you said, on another level. Brilliant and so entertaining to follow BTS because there's so much to feed the brain and heart. Takes a bit of time and work, but so worth it. Hi...the stuttering part is my fav too. It's amazing because of the context. This track is also an ARMY favorite. This is definitely a diss track. This was released in June 2018 (during FESTA as a free release thru Soundcloud). FYI, FESTA is the BTS debut anniversary celebration. The track is especially good considering the timing and context of it's release. At the time, BTS was known in Korea but not quite considered the top kpop group. EXO and Twice were more recognized then. Wins by BTS were still surprising. But by 2018--BTS had finally gone back to Korea after doing well overseas, including the successful Wings Tour (2017), winning Top Social Artist at the BBMAs (2017,2018), performing at the AMAs (2017), winning daesangs at MAMA and MMAs (2016,2-17), and finally getting their first #1 on the BB200 chart with Love Yourself:Tear. So everyone was shocked and trying to figure out how BTS had done all this. There were literal youtube videos and TV shows about this. So for me...the stuttering represents all the celebrities and industry people who had ignored BTS in the past, suddenly having to be nice to them because BTA returned home as the global stars who conquered the music charts in the US. This is also why there are reference to "school" and "small companies". Love this track!
