Hey Alfie. Great video as always! Thank you for the final message of the video. As a Saudi, I always get a lot of hate online for the stuff my government do... of which I have 0 control over. @benhaney96292 жыл бұрын
I certainly don’t hold you entirely responsible for your government but “0 percent...”? Can’t agree with you there. Your government gets away with what it does because a majority of people agree with them and those that don’t go along. I mean poll the citizenry of day Saudi Arabia on how they feel about homosexual rights. Or woman’s rights. This is not a case of an enlightened citizenry being railroaded by a tiny evil minority. You have a cultural problem in the Middle East far more than a government problem.
@Nawaf-qk9mu2 жыл бұрын
@@benhaney9629 My government gets away with what it does because it provides a very strong and very dependable welfare and social security system. In that they get support and people simply abstain from any politics because A: They are being well provided for and B: Their opinions are irrelevant anyway, at least on the individual scale, and they'd much rather live in an imperfect but generally well oiled system than start up some civil war. As for women's rights and homophobia for example, those are two separate issues so I'll address them individually. As for women's rights, a vast majority of women here live comfortable family decent lives by western standards, if not better in many cases. True, sexual harassment is unfortunately an issue as it is in many places in the world, but contrary to what you may read in whatever newspaper you frequent, it's very culturally condemned and very heavily punished. Men can get jailed for verbal harassment of women. Men have, I know guys in school personally who thought they were hot shit, tried flirting with girls, insisted even though they were uncomfortable and was detained for it. As for say their legal right, certainly in the past they had a few limits on them and in some cases can lead to a system that men can exploit over women. But at least from the cultural point of view (as I'm talking for my people, not the govermnet), those rules were all more regarded as obligations a man must fulfill for his wife than tools he uses to control her. By that I mean, if your wife said she wanted to travel with her friends, (at least culturally/socially) it's not regarded as "She needs permission from you", but instead as "You must do these legal paperwork for her". If say the husband refuses, the wife can very easily complain to the mother of her husband about it, and he would be very strongly condemned. These are all stiff I've seen first hand and regularly heard about before it was no longer needed. Equally there are many rules that benefit women (both legally and socially enforced, but more socially than legally). For example, in the case of divorce, unless the women specifically decides to move back in with her family (in Arabian culture, living with your family even in adulthood is normal and encouraged), she is supposed to be the one to take the house. Also, child support is completely in the hands of the man, and he must even pay for the wife (the logic behind, u must also support the mother of uour children, even if she is no longer your wife). So while some laws may benefit men, in the majority of cases, either the invidiuals doesn't exploit it, or the overall social environment the individual is in (especially from tbe mother) doesn't tolerate the exploitaction and quickly pressures them away from it. As for homophobia, this case is much simpler. Yeah, people are quite homophobic, especially the older generation. But for most people, it's a sentiment of "I think its a sin, but it's not my business what others do", at least besides the much older population. There's few very publicly known gay and trans people (people wjo are themselves within the arab/saudi community). People don't like them, true, but no one cares. At least the majority. A "let them be" sort or attitude. Rules are strict, but enforcement is generally very lax. I attended a gay-themed birthday party that was thrown in one of the biggest/most popular malls in the capital city. Nothing happened to any of us. It's still an issue indeed, but it's a much smaller one than the impression you are given. This is coming from a bisexual person. The stuff you tend to hear about exist, very much so. Religious extremism exists, but is very frowned upon even internally, so much so that I can honestly wholeheartedly say one of the most celebrated advancements in the last 10 years wasn't the women's legal rights, or even the tourism stuff, but the disbandment of the religious police. It has been so long since then and to this day people are always thankful and talk about how so much better the outdoor social life is without them terrorizing the streets. Undeniably many rules and government activity is questionable, but most of the people themselves (say, 90%) are some of the most hospitable people you'll ever meet, and not some rabid barbarians who are contempt with a society where their daughters and sisters are beaten and abused. No father I know will allow his daughter to be beaten, no brother I know will not beat a man half to death if he knew that man laid a hand on his sister, and I certainly need not explain how people would always protect their mothers. Please do not mistake the extreme and nitpicked news you hear about us for our common day to day lives and views. I realise you don't necessarily mean any hatred or offense towards us by your reply, I simply found it an opportunity to hopefully shine a light upon how the real normal world looks for us. If you read all of this, thank you. Please remember to always regard the social world outside the west with the same complexity you do within, as it always is very much the case! I hope you have a great day.

To be honest, although I'm not arguing if Qatar is the worst of the lot, it feels strange that people have seemingly forgotten that there were several "controversies" in Russia 2018, France 2016, Brazil 2014 AND South Africa 2010...Media swept so much of it under the rug though, but you can still find videos about the state of these tournaments and how bad the locals were treated.

It will be very interesting to see if the Qatar team continues to develop through the years, i'd imagine their talent pool will grow a lot given that they're building whole new cities so the population can grow.

they can if they continue expanding the Aspire academy world wide.

No it won’t. They live in a dessert. You need grass to play football. And their population is way too small. About the size of Middlesbrough. They aren’t a country that is known for playing football. And they only really have football teams because of this money whore of a World Cup.
@laurencec092 жыл бұрын
@@mabm4310 I mean I do agree that it's only due to money, but that's the point. They'll keep pumping the money in over the years to diversify their economy away from oil, there's no reason they couldn't turn their entire country into a megacity and force the issue. Money talks these days
@mabm43102 жыл бұрын
@@laurencec09 but the population of Qatari nationals will still be too small to make a good football team. Plus geography on the planet is a thing. They don’t live somewhere where football can be played properly. It’s way too hot. The other extreme is Antarctica wanting a World Cup. Barely, if any people born there and not geographically relevant for sport. One is too hot. One is too cold. They just have to accept it. And they don’t. Which is where the obscene amounts of money and bribes and sports washing comes in.

Also just so you know in the U.S the most accurate way to measure city population is by urban area so Qatars citizen population is closer South Bend Indiana or Lubbock Texas than to Lexington
