Hi Hollis, You're becoming my "Go To Guy" for gardening questions.. 1) Would they have gotten bigger had they been left in the ground or would they just have gone woody? 2) Since the grow so quickly, would it be a good idea to pop 2 seeds in each hole so you don't get bald spots.. 3) Why couldn't you plant them closer together as in 2 inches apart and staggered? You could have gotten five more rows out of the same space, no? My Dad loves radishes and thinks gardening is a waste of time.. I would love to take him a bunch of them and say here you go, for the cost of a few seeds.. And, hello again from Toronto area.. Loretta
@HollisNancysHomestead8 жыл бұрын
+Loretta Goff Thanks for your vote of confidence!! 1) any longer and they would get tough, split and/or bolt. They taste best with soft texture at about 28 days. You get some big ones and some little ones. You can selectively harvest the big ones and let the little ones grow a little longer but keep an eye on them. 2) I don't do that. Don't want to have to thin them after they emerge. Planting 60 at a time still gives you a lot of radishes even with less than 100% germination 3) I like to give them room to expand and plenty air between plants. Dense packs usually leads to leggy plants with no bulb and all tops. Less is more. Living in a cool climate like Canada, you can replant after harvesting several times.

Hi there. Try keeping the soil moist for radish in the top 6 inches because that’s where the radish is (it’s a shallow root crop). I think they like to sit in moist soil most of the day (logically makes sense since they’re a cold weather crop and usually it’s rainy and cloudy in the time they grow) BUT do not over water because if you do you may cause the root to rot. How? Take a lump of soil in your hand from the top 1-2 inches of soil in the morning and squeeze. If it’s too wet and drips then it’s overwatered. If it’s too dry then it’s dry and you’ll know. Aim for in between: moist but not dripping wet. Lastly, avoid adding high nitrogen fertilizers because they will promote leaf growth at the expense of root growth. Usually you don’t have to fertilize radish at all. Haven’t tried bone meal but could make sense since bone meal is high in phosphorus which is good for root growth and radish are a root. Let us know you results please.
