Groucho looks great here, his running around the stage like someone ten years younger.

Groucho was 74 years old here. Amazing.

Remains great entertainment some 50+ years later! The world was full of talent back then. Truly classic talent.

Despite listening to a lot of singers from the 40s and 50s, I'd never heard of Jennie Smith. She was great...and, lovely.

Dee Hartford (formerly "Mrs. Howard Hawks") also appeared in the "TWILIGHT ZONE" episode "The Bewitchin' Pool" that season {"Darn, you loud-mouthed kids! Now, PIPE DOWN out there!!"}....and two appearances as "Verda the Android" in second season episodes of "LOST IN SPACE".

Stan Sawyer is the announcer for Salem: Yvonne Craig is in the "Right Guard" ad; Sid Raymond featured in the Schlitz spot.

I so love these classic shows! Please keep posting them. Cigarettes ads bother me so I skip them. Tobacco companies, though. They've been at this job of romanticizing early deaths for a looooong time, even after they'd known the dangers of this addictive substance. And of course they' continue to spread this poison across the globe to even children in under developed countries. Unconscionable! But I digress. Love old stars like Groucho, Jack Benny et al.

Notice the difference - here you get to actually see the act entirely. Today, they change the camera angles every few seconds and insert faces of audience reaction and insipid backstage comments.

Groucho still had it. It would start drifting away by "Skidoo," but both IAMMMMW and "What's New, Pussycat?" would have been a cinch.

Even though this was originally telecast in March 1964, I suspect this is a June repeat, as Schlitz was promoting their "Pop Top Holiday" (coinciding with the Fourth of July weekend, of which the 4th fell on a Saturday that year).

57:22 - that looks like a big F U From 1982 But I'm so dumb That's really his thumb! It's no joke, this episode may have been wiped forever, I suspect, had some quick thinking person in the 1982 VTR room realized the tape on the machine was an episode of HP from 1964.
@hollywoodpalace33089 жыл бұрын
+TheRenegadeRoadhouse Huh? Where are you getting this information about how the show was "rescued" from being wiped? For one thing, this is a *kinescope*, which is a film record, not videotape. You can't wipe a film. You can only throw it out.
@ALAKA7778 жыл бұрын
Actually, TheRenegadeRoadhouse is correct about this episode being on videotape. The slate that cut into the end of the Hollywood Palace was for KABC sales. The slate was dated 7-29-82. Peter Ferrara was the director, and Charles Barbee was listed as the cameraman. Charles Barbee later became the Director of Photography on the final three seasons of the Night Court sitcom.
@hollywoodpalace33088 жыл бұрын
ALAKA777 Then I assume that to be an artifact of a more modern transfer to videotape which was done in 1982 of the kinescope. My understanding has always been that the first two seasons of HP-- what little is floating around of it-- is preserved on kinescope film, not videotape as the color episodes were. I could certainly be mistaken, but that was my understanding. Just as any other kinescope would need to be transferred to videotape for modern (1980s+) reruns, so were the HP kinescopes. If one station's video transfer got messed up it wouldn't have meant the destruction of any trace of this program forever after. :)
