My parents were kids during the Depression and they both came from large families. Even though we were a family of 4 my mom made Goulash for us often and I still like it today. In fact, your video made me hungry for it so I am going to make some for my dinner. Thanks, Tessie!

my sister used to make goulash all the time. She's 11 years older than me so when I was little she was learning to cook. My parents were born in the 30s and grandma in the 1900s so they lived through that depression era. Must be why I grew up watching them be pretty frugal!

I remember my nana making this for supper and when she didn't have tomatoes she would add gravy and the veggies were never the same it was what ever was left over in the fridge. If I remember right it seems to be a lot of corn or green beans. But she always had fresh hot bread with it. Oh I miss my nana's cooking. Thanks for the great memory. Keep smiling sweetie xoxo

Pretty soon after I started watching your channel, I started canning and creating me a pantry. With your help and the help of a few other of my favorite canners on youtube I learned well. I kept telling my family that they needed to be prepared of course they asked me for what and I said for anything and for everything. In my mind I was preparing for when all the food got sky high because of the weather. Never did I expect this to happen. But it has and I want to thank you and all my friends here for the support I got in the past year while learning. Also, I hope you all are doing well and are safe. God bless.

I’ve made food like this, it looks yummy, the carrots help balance the acidity of tomatoes. I grate carrots for spaghetti sauce, no one knows they’re there after it cooks. The acid of tomatoes causes some people to get indigestion or acid reflux, but we all enjoy cooking those type dishes. Now I cut back on pasta dishes to keep my weight down.

That is top of the line goulash. Mine is so plain compared to that beautiful dish of goulash you just made. This old lady here is really learning the meaning of never too old to learn. Hope I said that right. Oh how I wish I was your neighbor that would be a blessing in itself to me I would be right out there helping you and loving every minute of it. You don't find too many people nowaday as loving and caring As You Are on top making everything shine and beautiful that you touch. I could just go on and on telling you how much I love these videos and you. But I think I've babbled enough. I mean every word that I just wrote here from the bottom of my heart like I'd be talking to one of my children. Matter fact my oldest son that passed away would have turned 50 this November.. I was 16 when I got married and had him hope that doesn't look bad to you or anybody else that reads this. Sending Tons of love from a Kentucky granny God bless and stay safe and thank you for teaching me a better way to make goulash.💙❤

I make that dish quite a bit. I usually use ground turkey but lately my neighborhood grocer is out of it but it seems as though there is plenty of ground beef to be found. I like to alternate and make it with pasta one time and then switch over to rice the next. I miss the music in the beginning of the videos when you open the door and let the chickens out, but I enjoy your videos nonetheless! Thanks Tessie for sharing this Depression recipe, I honestly didn’t know what to make for dinner tomorrow until I seen this! And yes that’s pretty much what we are doing is using what we have to create a meal! I don’t have any ground beef but I do have ground turkey. I don’t have any peppers or onions but I do have dry minced onions and I do have tomatoes and pasta so I’ll use what I do have 😁 I honestly can’t wait until we can go to the grocery store and hopefully find things we need! Such a tough time for everyone!

Hi Tessie that looks like a cross between chili and American chop suey. I precook my hamburger like that too for ease. It also takes up less space in the freezer. I can't make soups or stews right now as I'm out of celery, potatoes, carrots, garlic, and other fresh veggies. Have not been to the market for over 3 weeks and will have to go Monday or Tuesday. I want to make a rough 20 day food plan before I go so I will know what I need. My waist line is also screaming for a big green salad! Stay safe and well everyone.

Good morning Tessie. You are almost to 40K subscribers! Well done! I am going to look for that cook book. Made with the macaroni, it is one of my mother's recipes. So good! As you know I teach rural New Hampshire lifestyles from 1920 to 1940, when time allows. Our first calf of the season arrived yesterday. A beautiful Hereford Heifer! 19 to go, unless we have twins! Being a working farm, not much has changed for us, except the way we pick up necessary farm supplies. We CALL first, charge the order and pick it up at the loading dock. Same with groceries. There are either drive up windows or the parking lot. We are also going back to the 1930s and 1950s here. A neighboring farm is now delivering fresh eggs into a cooler at our door! We are banding together to see how we can help each other and who is raising or growing food and milk. Take care- Diane

I didn't know there was an American version of it, but wunderbar goot :) The version we make isn't that different, instead of the macaroni we used rice. Kidney beans? Well in that period I doubt that anyone have ever heard of it, so no beans in it :P We used some flower to make the sauce thicker. It was indeed a dinner that wasn't that expensive, but still very healthy. Kom essa? That was an easy one :) It's derived from 'Komm essen". In Dutch it is 'Kom eten' and ofcourse in English it is 'Come eat'. I guess this is a nice example that covers a lot. PA Dutch contains a lot of German dialect, and some are close to Dutch dialects (at the borders it is a grey area) and that Dutch sounds a lot like a mixture between English and German :)

Love your videos. Thank you for the links. Fun fact about sprouting onions are you can cut off all the layers around the Sprout and use those to cook with .and then the actual pieces as long as you cut it to where they're still root on the bottom you can replant those and grow yourself some more onion from an onion also works if you cut the bottom of an onion and you keep just the root end and. you can also get onion with green onions as well but you don't have to pull a green onion you just continue the Harvest the top.

Tessie when you have a chance look up Great Depression Cooking with Clara. You will love it. She sadly passed away a few years back in her 90's but her channel lives on and gives us hope in these hard times. I know you will appreciate it! Love you!

My mom's goulash was macaroni, ground beef, homecanned stewed tomatoes, corn, and garlic salt. Blah I hated it so much. My husband did too so no goulash in my house for my kids. 😂

I make several one pot meals with pasta and meat... You can cook the pasta in the crock(or a pot on the stove top) with all the fixings, too, just add enough water that the pasta will soak it up. It's delish. :) Love your vids! Thank you! ❤️

Hey Tessie!! I love your videos!!! Absolutely no discredit to this, but the Depression was in the 30's, wasn't it? Aside from that, we have all been changed by the current situation. I wish I was more like you! You have help me (and, I'm sure MANY others) pass the time. Thank you for sharing your life! God Bless!!

Few remember this, but back in those days, it was a struggle to get kids to eat veggies..plus, without modern medicine, many children didn't survive. So adding nutritious carrots to the mixture ensured the children could get their essential vitamins...
