Yeah seriously! So many likes on this comment, but Im all for multiple Pre-Cable Quality TV Series & Nypd Blue (also responsible for Hill Street Blues) was top form tv. Granted I do love Homicide a little more due to its Pure Authentic On Location Shooting in actual Baltimore, MD!

I haven't watched any Homicide since it was first run, but I have never, never forgotten Luther Mahoney's face, voice, or presence. One of the, if not the, most impressive TV villains ever. Imagine Luther facing off against Raylan in Justified.

It's amazing that Erik Todd Dellums (interesting side note: his father Ron Dellums was a Congressman from a district in Oakland from 1971 - 1998) doesn't have a much bigger acting career than he does... his work as Luther Mahoney was one of the high points of Homicide (and that's saying something, given how great a show Homicide was).
@wfberan9 жыл бұрын
I always loved how David Simon flipped two Homicide actors from one side of the law to the other in The Wire--Dellums from a drug dealer to a medical examiner, and Clayton LeBoeuf from a cop to a front for a drug dealer.

Your post reminds me that they kind of kept Mahoney and Pembleton away from each other's storylines, and made Mahoney the nemesis of Kellerman, Lewis and Stivers. Mahoney and Pembleton would be no slow burn, it would have gone nuclear on the first encounter.

I love watching these artists work. Homicide... is merely one excellent platform for professionals to demonstrate their cinematic, literary and theatrical artistic strengths. That is this business. It’s a good and important business, showing us ourselves and finding meaning in this monotonously simple, but often pleasurable or exasperating human experience. It’s a chance to step outside of our self-awareness to safely look back at ourselves and learn more how we respond to outside forces in relation to what we must conclude is our ego or self, and what we hopefully understand is our identity. That is the valuable service artists and the arts provide. We make humans more human, for better or for worse. It’s enjoyable, isn’t it?

As much as I love this scene (I come back to watch it from time to time, as you can see from my comment 8 years ago), in retrospect I find it hard to believe that Luther, even in the midst of his hubris, would make such a dumb mistake. I know his screw-up worked for the storyline, but he was a savvy dude, and he would have gamed out every which way the conversation/interrogation at the station might have gone in advance, certainly to the extent of not blurting out details of a murder that weren't publicly known.
