When I first saw the 1987 figures at Walmart, Crazylegs was one of the three that I bought along with Cobra Commander and Law and Order. I didn't do much with him other than stick him in a seat usually.

I’ll admit, he’s a walking (falling?) target in bright red, but I loved that figure. The sculpting is great. The NF version is definitely more realistic, but way out of my price range these days. So, Falling Target it is… (As a kid, I always used him as a para-medic… sorry… he doesn’t look too weird standing next to Lifeline.)

Had version 1 of Crazy Legs as a boy. Since I never owned any of the other paratrooper characters, I used him to skydive into battle when I played with my G.I. Joes. Managed to pick up the Night Force Crazy Legs for two dollars from a local store near me. Never thought I would be able to own a single vintage Night Force action figure given how popular they are with fans. Since he came with no accessories, I am planning on picking them up in the near future. Really wish that the Hasbro had included the working parachute with him, it would have upped his play value in my book.

Great video. There was a football player from Wisconsin, Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsh who played in the 40's and 50s. He got the name from his unusual gait. I assume the race is in his honor. He was inducted into the college and pro Footballs Halls of fame. He also acted in the 1953 movie about his life "Crazylegs" and that is who I think of when I hear that name.

Definitely an underrated figure. Since he was killed in the comics, my brother and I often used him as an Oktober Guard character because of his red uniform and because we thought his face sculpt looked like Walter Koenig (i.e. Star Trek's Chekov.)

I think it's a good idea to combine color variations. While the Night Force colors make more sense, I prefer the original.

As it was explained to me years ago Crazylegs was one of many slang terms for a paratrooper during WWII.

Gene Vincent had a song called “Crazy Legs” but it was about a girl who could dance not a paratrooper. This was one the last Joe figures I bought new back then. Still a favorite from 87 along with Falcon and Chuckles.

Love this review Commander. This is a cool figure review. 87 was my last year of GI Joe. I always was a big fan of Airborne and Ripcord. Wish I would have gotten this figure as a kid. Thank you Commander.

AND, Crazylegs is technically the 1st G.I. Joe from Iowa. Maverick came out latter in 1987 from Ida Grove, IA; Hit & Run came out in 1988 from Sioux Falls, IA; and Windchill(version 1) came out in 1989 from Cedar Rapids, IA. Someone at Hasbro must have hit all the "vacation spots" of Iowa LOL!

I had version 1 but never really used him as a paratrooper because his backpack was just not sensible to me. His night force version looks cool but I never had any of that set. It was odd that only one character from Sky Patrol had a specialty as parachute rigger. You would think all of them would have a specialty specifically for parachuting.

I remember as a kid I would cut a square out of a plastic bag and then sellotape thread onto the corner and then tie it around the backpack, making every one of my Action Force soldiers paratroopers.I would then throw them from the balcony of my house into the shrubbery below mostly at night as part of a night ops mission.

I've been making my way through the Marvel G.I,Joe comics over the past couple of years and that 3 part story about escaping Sierra Gordo really stood out to me, it may even be my favorite story in the comics. So I have a soft spot for Ceazylegs for being a main character in that. I do like his red uniform as a toy, but I feel it looks to similar to Seek-peek. Although I think Crazylegs wheres the red better.

Probably mine too, as an adult. As a kid, those issues are almost as much childhood trauma as the death of Optimus Prime.

I liked this figure a lot as a kid, though I did prefer the Night Force version to the first version (in my eyes, he matches well with Ripcord, so I used to send them on missions together). In recent years, I have thought that if you were to take the Crazylegs version 1 body and swap its head with the version 7 Crimson Viper head, you’d end up with a pretty cool Cobra paratrooper (there’s something about version 1’s red color scheme that just screams “snake” to me).

I'm pretty sure there is another variant of Crazy Legs where he is camoflaged and comes with a backpack with a parachute. I remember my friend had it when I was growing up in the 80s. I think it was a Toys R US Exclusive.

I’m fairly certain the name refers to how we land as paratroopers, known as a PLF. Knees slightly bent, legs together and hip facing the direction of travel. When you hit, you try to spread the impact across one side of the body, usually resulting with your legs in the air before you roll to your feet. I liked this character but hated the head sculpt. Looks great on the packaging but the toy’s face looks ridiculous.

Red would actually be better than black at night. Red at night, plays tricks on the eyes. Another better color than black would be a dark blue, like the actual color of the night sky.

I can shed some light on Crazy Legs. His uniform is in-line with the protective clothing of a forest jumper and the code-name Crazy Legs is an inside joke at Jump School referring to the bicycling technique employed by Paratroopers to untangle their parachute risers when jumping with the old-style T-10 Charlie 'chutes. The Cherry Legs baby jumpers seriously overuse the technique at Jump School. When you are on the ground looking up you see a sea of "Crazy Legs". A Paratrooper jumps with a chute no matter the manner of delivery. Air Assault is delivered by rope and helicopter only.
