Thank you . One of your best reports yet. It had drama. And as a Grendel fan, it sure looked to me like the Grendel out performed the 338 for whatever reason. Thats why Im sticking with my Grendels.

Ben's toys neither gather dust or grow moss. He is engaged in the endless endeavor of finding the absolutely right combination of bullet, powder, load, caliber, rifle, and optic. I don't think he will ever find it, but I don't think he will stop looking, either. Kidding aside, I get to learn a lot from his experiences and I often get to help with sighting in, chronoing, or just getting to look through his optics. I give him a hard time, but I am benefiting from it as well. In this video, he has used the rifle, ammo, and optic previously, but never not with all three at once, I don't think.

What a cool experience to visit On Target and be so well-received ! I appreciate the invite to join and I’m looking forward to redeeming myself soon with the 338 Fed. I would like to recreate the shot off sticks at 175 yards to know where the POI is.

Love your channel and thanks for your help in controlling this porcine plague. One question: how do you mitigate risks when shooting towards a road? I’m sure you avoid it if possible but if you can’t avoid it how do you minimize risks?
@CarpeSus
@CarpeSus 6 ай бұрын
HUGELY valid question and one that merits answering. No doubt my answer will not satisfy everybody. NONE of the properties I hunt are large enough that my bullets can't leave the property when I shoot. So I am always at risk of breaking the law and having a bullet cross property lines and where the property line is a roadway, risk breaking additional laws by shooting across roadways. When bullets leave the intended shooting area, they are a danger. So the concern is very real for legal reasons and those legal reasons are in place due to safety reasons. I never want to damage something down range that isn't targeted. My point here is that the roadway is a consideration, but if I am shooting across a roadway, then I have already messed up by shooting across a property line. However, roadways are a special consideration. Bottom line is that we shoot when vehicles are not present, thereby minimizing the risk to roadway drivers should a bullet leave the property. You never shoot when cars are down range of your shot and you don't shoot when you see cars approaching your shooting line. At night, I get the benefit of reduced traffic and then both headlights and road noise to let me know when vehicles are coming, usually headlights preceding the road noise. The cool thing about headlights is that you can tell a care is coming even if it in on the other side of a hill because you will see the hill silhouette light up. Especially this close to the road, it is no problem knowing when cars will be present. Beyond that, I try to never take shots that should they miss, that they have free passage to the roadway. IF my shots leave property (and this would be just as illegal), it will be AFTER they have deflected through a hog or ricocheted off the ground or a backstop. At least then if they do leave the property, they will be at a greatly reduced velocity and less likely to be harmful. So my shots will tend to be at a downward angle. I would prefer to have as much heavy timber behind the critters as possible if I don't have a hard backstop, not that I would ever trust the woods to be my backstop, but anything that helps reduce the possibility of errant bullets leaving the property is good in my book. For these situations when when are close to property lines or roadways, you won't see us doing a lot of rapid fire shooting. Shots will be slow paced IF we opt to shoot more than just once. Lastly, I prefer to use frangible bullets (though I test many others). Bullets that break up after hitting something (or going through a hog) will be in pieces afterwards and hence will be at a reduced velocity and the pieces each separately carrying away part of the energy and hence will travel a shorter distance as (less energy, velocity, and no longer aerodynamic). So unless I find some billionaire landowners with several sections of land or a firmament all the way around their properties, there will always be a down range risk, but there are ways to minimize that risk as much as possible. In the grand scheme, safety should always be the first consideration. There is no absolute safety, particularly with properties that are just 10s or 100s or acres (versus 10s of thousands of acres). As such, we try to mitigate the risk as much as we reasonably can.

@@CarpeSus Thanks for the very thorough reply. I was correct in assuming you had this topic 100% covered, since in every one of your videos you are incredibly safety conscious and disciplined with your safety protocols. I simply can’t believe how bad the feral hog problem is and how much it impacts the farming community. Thanks again for helping eradicate this plague.

Well, the last 2 years were serious droughts here in Tecas. This year, we are in the top 10 wettest years o. Record so far. While I do have to deal with wet weather occasionally, it usually is not like this.
