Hi, in this Tea break Fix I look at my own Hotpoint Aquarius TCFS93 Condenser Dryer which keeps turning itself off, it also leaks and is not draining.
What is causing this? Let's see if we can work it out and (fingers crossed) fix it.
Merch is here!!!!! www.puddlt.com/my-mate-vince

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

8 years ago I moved to a flat with a machine left by previous tenant that was around 10 years old then, it worked once or twice then stopped going onto drain cycle so I had to manually empty (which normally meant about a hour mopping up after due to doing it little bit at a time) and one time when I was annoyed I snapped the door lock. I got the model number, went to Ebay found a replacement pump for £15 official and brand new and delivered, removed 4 screws from the lid, put old towels on the side of drum tipped machine over, the old pump was held on with a large metal clamp, removed it, attached new one and the machine worked, I spent a few more minutes replacing the door lock which cost about £7 delivered again for a official part. I only got rid of it last year partly as I wanted an upgrade but the only real flaw it had whch began in final year or two of its life was it skipped the longer cycles and went onto later ones but still washed and drained like new, and the bottom plate that hid the emergency water release valve the clips had snapped off so I just held it on with gaffer tape and adhesive.

Condenser dryers collect water in the base of the machine which flows through a hole to the pump chamber where it is pumped up into the water container. When the water container can take no more water, the water in the sump area rises, causing a polystyrene float to rise which in turn pushes a micro-switch, telling the user to empty the water container. When the hole to the pump chamber gets blocked, the water cannot get to the pump to be pumped into the water container so the water level in the sump area rises and overflows, causing a leak. A side-effect of this is that the rear air process fan chamber becomes filled with water where it shouldn't - and the fan flicks water up onto the heating element, tripping out the electrics. Looks like although yours wasn't tripping the electric from the excess water, it very soon would have been! For added gooeyness, slime and gunk, take the float chamber apart 😉 Nice work. Great fix Vince.

Reminds me of my old dishwasher that was leaking and I pulled apart and put my hand under a fitting to see if there was any water on the fitting. This taught me two things. 1. There was also electrical connections on the underneath of this fitting. 2. If you forget to switch off said appliance at wall these connections bite when you grab them with a hand

Good video. I had a build up of fluff further into the tumble dryer... Water wasn't even making its way to the pump. Given the fluff you recovered, I suspect there will be more sludge further up stream. Removing the side panel and plastic cover and going in from the side allowed me to deblock things. With a few fresh pints of water poured manually into the system the whole loop is now flowing nicely. Just wanted to mention this in case someone is struggling. 😊

I've had lots of them apart, they're a very easy fix once you've done one. There's a different model with a water cassette under the condenser and that works by gravity, so no pump, but the condenser in those needs to be de-linted occasionally and that's a job for a compressed air nozzle. Great video showing how simple these machines are to work on.

If the flat belt that turns the drum breaks your first problem is to get the new belt around the drum. Remove the sides and loosen the front panel. You can lift the drum enough to feed the belt under it. The second problem is to get the belt over the motor's spindle. To stretch the belt I found the best tool was the handle of a mini paint roller. Use the part of the handle where the roller goes to hook the belt and pull as hard as you can. The belt is a tight fit. I got my belt from espares.

Nice fix, it reminded of my dryer repair earlier this year. My whole condenser was clogged up so it didn't dry anymore. The filter screen had a small crack and as we noticed it it had too much lint clogged up the condenser already. After a painfully disassembling I was able to unclog it with a garden sprayer and it is now back to work. Two comments from my side: I had put my dryer on a workmate bench in the basement to be able to work in a comfortable height. Independent of age this makes your life much easier. Second I have read that you shouldn't re-route the waste water at least on some dryer models (mine is a Bosch) as it is used to clean the heater and condenser by recirculating it. You might want to double check this for you model as well.

I also cleaned mine, wasnt broken but general cleaning i do from time to time. mine doesnt get much of stuff in it but probably because mine has a double filter, but still cleaning the pump for a dryer of even washing machine around every 5 years is a good thing. that way you can do it when you have time instead of you having to fix it as an emergency. well done Vince, and yeah plastic tabs break easy anyways so no worries, still holds well enough ;)

Good job well done! I had to take ours to the repair service for cleaning. Even with 4 filtering layers and regular cleaning, the insides were clogged with fiber. The air did not pass through properly. Now, it works like new after the maintenance. So, the lesson learned is that if it takes your dryer to go through the cycle longer than usual, some bigger maintenance is required. Looking at you Whirlpool.

I love watching these type of fixit videos Vince, mainly because we get to see all the electrical appliances available in the UK. They are different to Australian appliances and makers,as usual an informative video great to ⌚️ watch. Yep Vince time for the rubber gloves I'm 😱 afraid Its a pretty weird design, blocks up with lint but no real way to clean it without pulling it all to bits, maybe there's a way to clean the lint out before it blocks up the drain pump. One other thing, at least we now know how a condenser dryer works, meaning it doesn't release water vapour into the air, unlike the old style of dryer. Really I'll say it again, a very informative video.

Just in case you need to access the pump/float in future you don’t need to take top or sides off and never put it on its side due to water leaking through it as you found as some of these have a module in the base. Just use large flat screwdriver to prise the two tabs on the top pump cover away from rear panel and it all pulls out. Well done fixing it.

It is actually a Hotpoint Aquarius after all. May have cracked it, along with several clips 😝 The tray was full of fluff but completely dried out, as I haven't used the dryer for a few months. Cleaned that out with a screwdriver blade and then the vacuum cleaner. Cleaned the float, which wasn't too bad, reassembled it and injected a litre of water down the pump tube, turned it on but it just beeped at me. Silly me had it pushed with the front to the wall, operating it blind and the door was open. Closed the door and off it went, had the pump hose in a cat litter tray and it was clearly working. Will test it in the morning with some wet dust sheets, no washing to do and wouldn't normally use the dryer anyway. Run the washer, dryer and dishwasher* in daylight to take advantage of the solar panels. Cheapskate. *Which will be the next job, that is on strike too.

@@Mymatevince That was a bust. Tried it with a dust sheet, which came out dry nut no water in the receiver. Did a full load of washing and dried it. Checked after about an hour, no water in the receiver, plenty on the floor. I expected it was the pump hose incorrectly pushed home but that was OK. Dragged the dryer out, still running and pulled the hose off and directed it into the cat litter tray*. Water was being pumped out but also pouring out of the spigot that seems to lead to a plenum chamber feeding the receiver. I presume that the blockage must be here. Will cogitate on this, see if the plenum chamber is accessible but more likely direct the hose into a bucket until I get one long enough to reach the handbasin. * I don't have cats, don't like them, but litter trays are ideal to chuck a few tools in to do small jobs and keep them from being forgotten and abandoned. Lost too many small tools.

Worth chaecking the lint filter inside the door,as it may have a tear in the mesh, which is letting Lint through, also if it’s that age 2015,I would also remove the rear plastic half moon shaped cover (2 screws ) this will reveal the drum shaft bearing,a small brass like material which may either be round or square.check for any wear on this and any black powder ,if it’s ok just give it a covering of grease, but if it’s worn ,easy way it to life the rear of the drum and see if there is any movement ... if there is simply replace the bearing,as if the bearing wears through, then the drum shaft will get cut in half by rubbing against the casing of the machine ... Vince the hot moist air gets blown over the condenser and the water condenses and collects in the reservoir. When it reaches a level it lifts the float which runs the pump. The slimy stuff is fabric conditioner which mixes with the lint and gums up the pump. It will in time eat away at the polystyrene. I have done many and it was painful to watch you strip it down when it's so easy to strip it down.

Taking these apart can be a real pain. A few months ago mine (a cheap Gorenje that is almost 10 years old by now) started making whining noises, so I decided to replace the belt. After taking off the top, the sidepanels and the back I just gave up. I couldn't see where to take off the screws to get the front panel off, and that's what I would have needed to do to get the belt off. Instead I decided to give it a good clean, vacuum it and put it back together. It doesn't make the whining noises again, and I have a spare belt that I'll probably never need.

Given that we're heading into a period where people will be wanting to conserve electricity usage, the dryer might be a good one to consider dropping, especially considering that using one can cost the equivalent of boiling a kettle for an hour.

Hi vince what happens is the pump motor is always on as there is always a level of water in the bottom that gets pumped up to the top through the clear tube when the draw is filled with water the overflow black tube refills the compartment at the bottom where it’s just been pumped from which then raises the level of water till it pushes the float up to push the switch which turns off the heater element and water pump also lighten up the empty water led. This in turn prevents any flooding until user notices the led lit.

Hi great video I have this same dryer and for some reason these last 2 days has been leaking water all over the floor and I’m not sure why I have gained a lot of knowledge from your video as I didn’t even know where to start at first the drawer still collects the water so I’m not sure why it would leak do you have any ideas please I think I will definitely look at the pipes at back to start with I’m also thinking of having it drain in the drain to as this may help any advice would be great I’m a little Hesitant at taking it all apart as I might not be able to get it back together 🤣

Nice fix Vince, but given the cost of electricity these days it may have been cheaper taking this one to the tip ! 🤣🤣

i DID have same problem a couple of months ago with my mothers dryer the compartment was filled with mold and the impeller had broken off so we did order a new pump but that did not help i think there was a bigger fault too with the electronics because of the microswitch got stuck in on so something further down the line did brake too :/

This happened to mine a few weeks back but the pump was always actuated rather than off it would make an horrendous squealing noise as it was running dry.
