Another really cool fluid simulation ! The yacht is maybe a little bit too stable but it's just a small detail ! 😉😉 A great work ! 👍👍👍

Perfect work! Is bifrost much inferior today? Would you return to Maya for fluid simulations?
@HangYuriYangFX
@HangYuriYangFX 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe not right now. Bifrost (mainly maya) can’t handle very high resolution sim.. and always have problems with collisions. (At least a few years ago) Plus the lack of wranglers. The good thing about Houdini is that you have almost the absolute control.. you can create/fix almost anything. But very very difficult in Maya (after all, it is the software’s limitation)
@masterfootage5481
@masterfootage5481 3 жыл бұрын
@@HangYuriYangFX Thank you very much for the answer! Perhaps when it will be possible to control with the help of the bifrost graph, there will be more control, but perhaps even with a greater probability of bugs and crashes ...
@HangYuriYangFX
@HangYuriYangFX 3 жыл бұрын
@@masterfootage5481 I remember it got really unstable when it went over 10 million particles.. I don't know much now. hopefully some improvements.. The thing is, all the different projects/shows will have different artistic approaches. Bifrost went the apple way, "our bifrost is so physically accurate, you don't need tricks and fixes like in houdini - bifrost engineers." that's the opposite of what FX people want. it is how we describe houdini.. it isn't the best, but it gets you exactly what you want.

Very cool ! Just used 100 threads on a 3990? Can flip/whitewater simulation use 128 threads?
@HangYuriYangFX
@HangYuriYangFX 3 жыл бұрын
definitely, just there would be no noticable improvement.. I found after more than 64 threads.. the difference is very minimal. cross ccd talks waste too much time(also you run lower frenquency)
@williamliu3794
@williamliu3794 3 жыл бұрын
@@HangYuriYangFX Bad news . I'm using a dual 8124,considering a rig with 3990 for more efficiency on DOP. According to that, maybe 3970 is the best choice .BTW, did you render the whitewater by mantra? The rendering time is good.
@HangYuriYangFX
@HangYuriYangFX 3 жыл бұрын
@@williamliu3794 yeah I use mantra only.. you know they are low res probably 720p renders.. on 64 cores, it is really fast. 3970 would be a very nice choice for simulations.. or maybe the next gen 32 core threadripper. The bad thing is that they won't get faster, but the good side is that now you can run two simulations at the same time with less performance impact!

Amazing! Can you do the sim with a RTX GPU or can it only be done with CPUs
@HangYuriYangFX
@HangYuriYangFX 2 жыл бұрын
adaptive flip sim is not opencl accelerated, so only cpu at the moment. But at the end of the day.. for high-res simulations that will use 100G of RAM easily.. graphics cards just can't handle them anyway.
@ProvVFX
@ProvVFX 2 жыл бұрын
@@HangYuriYangFX Thanks. That makes sense.I'm on a laptop, so I wonder how long it'd take to calculate the sim on a i9 CPU. Those threadtripper AMDs are the best thing that has come out of that company in a long time. Cheers
@HangYuriYangFX
@HangYuriYangFX 2 жыл бұрын
@@ProvVFX it is a tough call about the time consumption. At a certain point, like over 48 cores or something, the difference will become so small that it will make no difference going higher anymore… too much lag through infinity fabric. Architectural thing I guess as cpu design going towards that more and more.
@ProvVFX
@ProvVFX 2 жыл бұрын
@@HangYuriYangFX Interesting. I guess it may take about two or three times longer on an i9 processor.

Hey, does the file include the setup/workflow for combining the flip sim with the large ocean?
@HangYuriYangFX
@HangYuriYangFX 6 ай бұрын
they are not combined.. it is literally just a sim render on top of the ocean surface render(in 2D).
@ignitoracing
@ignitoracing 6 ай бұрын
@@HangYuriYangFX ahh right, I've been wanting to learn the proper way of doing combining flip tank with large ocean. I have done it in comp always so its nice to hear such an expert is doing it in comp too! I've thought the real way is to somehow with the ocean extend workflow etc
@ignitoracing
@ignitoracing 6 ай бұрын
@@HangYuriYangFX PS. Do you happen to know anything about something called BEM in flip? I've seen an article some time ago how someone managed to extend the flip sim to the large ocean post-sim to get those insanely large boat wakes
@HangYuriYangFX
@HangYuriYangFX 6 ай бұрын
@@ignitoracing Oh, You can totally do that. combine the sim and the ocean isn't too difficult with mantra..just need to flatten the edge and connect with the extended ocean surface. then need a bunch of spectrum masking if needed.. I just find it a bit time consuming on my own shots, so I tend to do it in comp as I can blend them whereever I want to.
@HangYuriYangFX
@HangYuriYangFX 6 ай бұрын
@@ignitoracing hmmm interesting..if it is just the boat wake like the kelvin wake.. you can just create the pattern and do a post deformation on the surface.. I will need to look into this BEM thing though. seems like an interesting topic.
