My Grandma, who is from a predominantly Black Caribbean country, Jamaica, says that kids were not allowed to wear dreadlocks to school in her days either. So I don't know why this is making such a splash. I don't know if this was racially charged so much as it was a ban against dreads themselves, since technically any race can wear them. Although, given that this happened in Texas, I wouldn't put it past them. I mean I saw white kids at my school wearing mohawks all the time, but that was a different era. I personally think his dreads look neat and at least he got some money out of this.

Unpopular opinion: maybe they banned dreadlocks because many people do not know how to properly maintain them, period! Some people let it get all nasty and just matted together and it smells like fungus or mildew. I'm not sure I entirely believe that this was racial, since anyone can wear dreads and they would also be banned. Sometimes you do have to respect authority! Now would I cut my dreads just to walk?
