Tesla released its public beta for the "full-self driving" autonomous package that has been promised for over 6 years. After being frustrated with paying for and never receiving any FSD features on my Tesla Model 3, I decided not to opt for the package when purchasing my Tesla Model Y. Not to mention that the price of FSD has risen to a ludicrous $12,000. But, Papa Elon finally delivered. Can the promise of FSD possibly hold up or is it all just one elaborate scam? In this video, we'll test Tesla Full Self-Driving and identify its strengths and many weaknesses that need improvement before even thinking about a wide public release.

I completely understand how complicated it is and how much training it needs. But I think I'd be disappointed if I spent 8k or 12k on that kind of auto-driving experience. It seems like more hassle worrying about what the car is going to do, than just driving it yourself.

You do realize 12k is not the production ready pricing? You're buying an option call on the software, and it's priced accordingly. The 100% robotaxi ready FSD will be much closer to $100k.

@JP Boy, you haven't thought that through, as even a $100k per license would be CHEAP. ...it's ok though, time will convince where reason will not. But most people, if they manage to own a Tesla after FSD is production ready, will likely subscribe to FSD. It's unclear whether Tesla will even continue to sell cars or the FSD software after it's done. Tesla would make more money, and further their mission faster, simply by managing transport as a service. PS - The fact you've bought some Tesla shares means utterly nothing in this discussion. Anyone can buy Tesla.

Yeah. There are still so many variables and lack of long vision that we have with our eyes. The safety tech is amazing and highway driving is smooth, but I feel we are a long way from full self driving. It would be the safest when most cars are self driving to better monitor the traffic since they will be able to talk to each other.

@@andreiamenta I don't know what to tell you. I've been watching it since people started posting FSD videos on youtube. I've noticed big improvements. It still sucks, but it sucks less. I believe it's going to suck less and less until it doesn't suck anymore. V10.11 is a big jump, exciting times. This stuff is hard, the fact that it is performing at this level is quite amazing.

@@sabahoudini The 80-20 rule is incredibly relevant here. We're definitely not 80% of the way to full self driving, and that's the easiest part. That last 20%, which is arguably the most important, is going to take exponentially longer. Nobody will want anything to do with it if it works "almost" all the time. FSD is going to take a long time to not suck, and so, so much longer to be great.

If you had to program this the old fashion way of "if/else" statements and whatnot it would take exponentionally longer. However this is not hard coded. I believe it's a matter of it crossing a certain threshold where it becomes intelligent enough for the task. Also a human is not 100%. It only has to be better than a human when he's checking his phone, having a conversation with someone in the car, eating a sandwitch and not paying attention to the road to be better than a human because that's when accidents happen. Of course it needs to be much better than this but you get my point.

Watching an analysis like this gives me an appreciation for how freaking complex modern traffic can be. That’s the difference between Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which seems to be mostly what Tesla relies on, and true self driving. Tesla has already taught their algorithms about many edge cases, but there is this theory that until this algorithm learns how to act preemptively, as opposed to reacting to situations when it’s too late, we will not reach true self driving. At the moment FSD is like ACC+. The goal seems to be replacing a human driver and I think we’re further from that goal than we are away from the starting point which ultimately is ACC.

@@victornpb Autopilot is just adaptive cruise control with line centering. It's base with every tesla and a feature that every car has nowadays. FSD is full self driving. Tesla also still does not have FSD, this is FSD beta, not the final state.

@@37racso I think it’s still in many ways a training and data issue. Road laws, signage, street design, etc… all vary widely between countries and even states. Stuff like roundabout handling would be a priority if Tesla were aimed at the European market, while a lot of human drivers in America also have no clue what to do at one of them. It is also in many ways the fault of city planning and road design if we ever plan to have autonomous vehicles sharing the road with humans. Stuff like having to turn into bike lanes is abhorrent and dangerous city design, regardless of who is driving.

I am what some would probably consider a Tesla Fanboy, but I 100% agree with you. I think that Tesla should have it where it can transfer to your next Tesla, especially since if you lease a Tesla now, you can't buy it out at the end of the lease. I paid $7,000 for my FSD, and I bought it since I intend to keep my car for more than 100k miles.

I test drove a Model 3 for about 8 miles using the adaptive cruise control (FSD not activated). On a smooth, broad, and well paved road it phantom braked 5 times with no cars or pedestrians around. When a semi was approaching in the opposite lane, the car freaked out and panic braked and sounded an alarm, but the truck had more than a normal degree of separation. I thought, “Gees! If a Tesla cannot handle a normal adaptive cruise without multiple driver interventions, it certainly never could handle full self driving. Whew! I almost bought a Tesla, I’m SURE glad I didn’t!

Hi Roderick, FSD is the final product, it's currently in learning mode for those that want to help train it. AI learns from data and the more real world data it gets the better it will become. The reason people bother is for the greater good. The sooner we get distracted/drunk/inattentive/tired people away from driving and give the job to robots the more lives will be saved. If I can drive a Tesla on FSD beta and help give Tesla real world data to train their Neural Nets, then FSD will be completed sooner. Yes it's expensive, but if people are in the financial situation where they can afford it then good for them. As for risks, the drivers are always in control of their vehicles so the risks are the same as driving without FSD beta. Once it's solved then FSD will drive better than humans, maybe even super human with all the cameras around them. Today (from what I've googled) 36,096 people died in 2019 from auto accidents just in the United States, probably 100,000 serious accidents with seriously injured people. The sooner we solve FSD the more people in the future will be saved.

Had very good quality. Only thing it was a bit ''annoying'' the fact that it kept changing the color profile so dramatically between that shot and the instax (which also had a very good quality)

I must say I am shocked about the state of autopilot. I really thought it would handle relativ simple road layouts better, given the huge promises behind this technology by Elon and others. Autopilot would be completely lost in europeans inner city traffic, as most streets are 2/3 the width as American alternatives. So there would be a lot less space for errors and 50% of the ones shown in the video would end in small crashes or at least scratched rims. I personally think a car with a software like this should not be allowed on public roads, even if you call it a beta and the participation is invite only, if i remember right.

At this stage I honestly prefer active cruise control with lane keeping assistant. It's level 2 assist, but solidly so with very little unexpected or wishy-washy behaviour.

Another way to get it flagged is if you hit the brakes, turn the wheel until FSD/AP disengages, and some people have stated that hitting the accelerator also flags the incident. I bought my Tesla 3 in mid-2020, and paid the full price at the time ($7K), and I was added to the FSD beta in early November. I know it's far from perfect, and from where I live now (NC instead of CA where I lived prior) it does seem to have more issues. Nothing that I would say is major, just issues with dashed-line merges and roundabouts it's still hesitant. However I will admit that currently (I am on FSD 10.10.2) it is not able to complete a drive without me reporting an issue, but it's worlds better than it was when I first entered the beta.

Man, this thing is just NOT ready for real life traffic in any way, shape or form. And I’m saying this as a Tesla fan. I am actually shocked. I thought it was almost ready, and just needed to drive some miles in beta to iron out a few wrinkles. But this was actually dangerous driving in some places and definitely not comfortable most of the time. Also, your theory about it using map data to determine where the STOP signs are seems legit, but complete contrary to how the system is supposed to work. If there’s one positive I can take out of this video, it makes me appreciate human drives more, even the bad ones. The amount of situations that the AI has issues with, but a human can solve without a second thought, is a real eye opener.

I think it’s mainly down to committing, most drivers good or bad at least commit to their decisions. The worst drivers are those who hesitate, especially uncomfortable young drivers. Committing to a maneuver, good or otherwise allows everyone else to react accordingly, whereas the Tesla hesitating in many situations mean that unless there is no traffic it will either make poor choices or, illegal ones.

Tbh in this state I would not use the Autopilot. It is more relaxing to drive yourself and not worry about whether the autopilot will be able to follow the rules. It needs to become more confident driving and need to make better decision in more „tricky“ situations. Hopefully it will get better in the future and I know it is just a beta.

Actually, it's easy to show that the FSD beta testing program is improving safety on the road. Not that the FSD beta software itself is safer than human drivers-it obviously isn't. But the combination of the FSD beta software doing some things well, and mainly avoiding all sorts of dangerous activities that human drivers engage in, while a human driver is ready at all times to take over when the software fails a basic driving skill, improves overall safety. In particular, based on easily available data and reasonable assumptions, the 50,000-some FSD beta testers would be expected to have 50-plus accidents a month; but in fact there have been none. I can show the math if anyone's interested.

Quinn and several commenters mentioned that the car was behaving like someone (usually a teenager) learning how to drive, and as someone who's learning how to drive right now, I could relate. What's interesting is that people who coach me say it's harder to pay attention with a new driver than it is to just drive the car themselves. In other words, they _are_ much more focused than they'd be on their own. You can see this with Quinn here. Do you think he'd be focusing and thinking so much if he weren't testing this thing? I doubt it. Of course, we're only talking about a tiny pool of 50K drivers, this conversation's mostly for fun.

Really interesting video! Loved the sponsorship and the FSD piece. It's still less than beta and I think there's way more approximation in the driving compared to real time calculation. Sure it's doing something real time, like obstacles avoidance, pedestrian safety, lane and distance keeping, and road sign recognition. But, other than that, I think it's relying way too much on the GPS data to do things. That's also why it's stopping so far back before the bumper lines most of the time if there's no real indication of where to stop. Or why it's stopping on an empty roundabout. There's the need to way more awarenes by the computer to drive and it really puts into perspective how much the roads we drive on today are made for humans and not for machines.

Yeah it was really jerky. I've seen this behavior from my Hero 8 but only in footage with a ton of detail (like moving fast through a forest or something). You can't expect these action cams to compete with a good mirrorless but when their footage is worse than a phone it makes you wonder..

Compression artefacts. It’s the Achilles heel of most sport cameras. When there is a lot of detail they completely lose it and even in 4K modes and above you’ll see tons of blocks and noise from the compression algorithm desperately trying to crunch the details to fit the bitrate.

The legal mess you have to agree to in order to get FSD beta is insane. You are 100% responsible for anything the car does, even if it just bugs out and drives straight into oncoming traffic. Tesla gets away with it by basically making their paying customers their beta testers (the privilege that costs them even more of course), without any of the legal hurdle. It’s almost unbelievable there are people willing to take these risks for what essentially acts like buggy adaptive cruise control.

Very nice video! I actually bought FSD on my model Y and am just about to go on the 100 mile drive to get the beta today. That bit about un-updated map data is something I have noticed in the valley. Even simple things like the missing update to the I-215 exit. Very disappointing, I wish Tesla had some sort of way to let us give feedback. Where they are just using google maps data is seems like such an easy fix.

This matches my experience. Driving with FSD in its current state on the highway is OK, assuming you like random back and forth lane changes, changes into upcoming passing vehicles, sudden unwarranted braking, and surprise jerks into exit lanes. My car occassionally goes into a permanent warning mode, with the flashing blue screen, alert tones, and even putting the hazards on even though I have full control of the car. Really fun when I'm talking to someone on the phone via bluetooth. But FSD on city/local streets is downright unusable. It brakes when unnecessary, accelerates like a scalded cat for no reason (and ignores the 'Chill' setting), and makes haphazard turns. It makes you nauseous within 5 minutes of use, eliminating any interest in continued use. I'd go so far to say it's downright dangerous. There is NO WAY this thing is near completion, let alone a foundation for robotaxis. I paid 6k for it 2.5 years ago with the expectation of FSD... I'd be really bent if I paid 12k. Tesla owes that money back to those who paid for this I think - not because of the value, but because of the promise. At this rate (with the re-writes and beta updates making little meaningful progress), we will not see actual FSD for perhaps a full decade IMO.

They can get away with it because people who buy Tesla just want to love the company so much and be part of the tesla group that they put up with things other car buyers wouldn't. I've seen countless videos of people having to get their Teslas serviced multiple times within the first year or months and at the end they always say they still love the car and would definately buy again. I mean look at this video, he bought a model 3 with fsd and never got to use it, instead of feeling scammed and never buying tesla again he went and bought a model y. Other companies don't get that benefit of a doubt.

So basically you spend 12 grand so that your car can drive itself far worse than me doing my first road test... The experience seems like you are sitting next to an extremely new driver and you constantly have to worry about that driver killing both of you. I personally wouldn't spend 12 grand on it. In fact, I wouldn't even use that feature if I had it for free on my car. It should be ILLEGAL to test potentionally fatally buggy and unproven software on public roads with pedestrians on them. All it takes is for a driver to panic as the car makes a bad move (not exactly unthinkable) for lives to be lost.

This video actually made me super pessimistic for the future of true self driving cars, cars that you genuinely never have to pay attention to while you’re being driven. Would love to see how this works on a snow covered street with 5ft high snow banks along the sides (Winnipeg for 3 months this winter). Most human drivers where pulling their cars halfway into the lane to check for traffic and you just kinda have to guess where the lanes are from past experience. Most streets with more than 2 lanes in each direction also lost a lane to snow banks falling into the street. It was a particularly bad year for snow in Winnipeg and it's only now starting to melt but I'd estimate that FSD wouldn't make it more than a block before just handing control over during this winter. Still hopeful but I'm sure not paying the early adopter tax anytime soon. Thanks Quinn! Look forward to seeing some winter testing in the future!

Wow, SO interesting. I've never been to North America, so lots of things to see.... I just wondered: is the tarmac on your roads this bad everywhere? And it's interesting to see stop signs everywhere, as they rarely use them here in Europe :) Anyway, I'd say the auto driving is quite some way off working properly on it's own.. I used to ride a bicycle in the inner city of Amsterdam. An AI system would have been incapable to predict how we rode bicycles there, as we often came from the wrong directions. Also the roads are so narrow in many areas that this technology would require decades of additional development to work there.

America is huge so roads can vary but they tend to be bad in places where they have hot summers and cold winters which cracks the surface. We also have a lot of stop sigs because roundabouts are too much to handle for the average American. They also ruin our fuel efficiency.
