i love nintendo's games and franchises, but i genuinely think the company doesn't understand how fan content can help build hype for their releases and only see it as "theft" of their intellectual properties. i doubt people even remember this, but there was a point in time back in 2018 where they wouldn't even allow gameplay to be used in videos without going through a complicated process, before they quickly scrapped that decision. out of touch thought processes like that are why i believe the company needs to actually pay attention to their fan communities instead of throwing a tantrum because we aren't doing things the way they want us to.

They shouldn't just let people do whatever, BUT they could do a lot more on their end to get with the times. If they actually made a Nintendo music streaming service or put their music on an existing one, many people (myself included) would pay a monthly subscription for it. Square Enix and Atlus are smart game companies that put their music on Spotify and I listen to it all the time. The best we have right now are Japanese CDs or stuff like Smash Ultimate's music player, which are both inaccessible to the vast majority of people.

A thing you forgot to mention is that Nintendo (Game Freak, i guess) DID try to post a full OST on KZbin early this year, complete with download links and permission for use on personal projects. It was Pokémon Diamond/Pearl's soundtrack, complete with all sound effects and everything... but for whatever reason they terminated the download page, and the project by extension just three months later. This experiment is just so bizarre to me because it seemed like they were finally understanding the users's needs, until they pulled the rug from under us, as they always do

i generally believe nintendo has a weird belief of "we want you to experience what we create only in the way we wanted you to consume it". It's a big thing with their music for sure, but it carries over to other things like their retro game offerings and things like removing or patching harmless glitches that only have any use to speedrunners. Everything nintendo makes they want you to enjoy the way they want you to enjoy (it's part of why i think we rarely see concept art or production art from them compared to other studios) and i think it's a shame. the other reason is also that they're a big mega corp and are mad people are listening to their music for free. also.

Yeah that’s the thing, a lot of nintendos weird anti consumer practices don’t seem to be done out of maliciousness, they both love and hate money at the same time because they take things down out of copyright but don’t give you a good alternative to pay for. They just seem to care about copyright specifically and not even money. They just have their own incredibly specific ‘way’ about things and that probably won’t change even when the legal team gets trickled out and replaced with a younger group because they’ll be trained or taught with the same sort of values as the current one.

@@green_the_ninja I think that was done with the mentality that if it’s open all the time people will just grind infinitely and break the game’s economy. This was ultimately a dumb move because they fixed that issue in splatoon 3 by having rewards on a three day rotation. Something I would love for them to do if they went towards the streaming route is if they released music under the names of both Nintendo and whoever the game’s composer is. Like if I wanted to check out the soundtrack to SM64 for example, it would appear on a page for Nintendo and a page for Koji Kondo. This would be a good idea mainly for the sake of organization because that would be a lot of music on just one page especially since you can’t filter searches on artist pages on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. Also it would help bring more attention to the people that make the music in Nintendo’s games as well, especially for people who have made extensive amounts of music for the company. However it does make releasing the music this way much more difficult as obviously more steps need to be taken.

I can't remember where I originally heard this, but the more time passes, the more I think it's true: Nintendo execs are still stuck in the 30-year-old mindset that they're not *video game developers*, they're *electronic toymakers.* If you're old enough to care about stuff like getting to listen to the music from a game on previous-gen hardware or things like "preservation" or "media accessibility," they view you as outside their target demographic and they really just wish you would shut up and go away. Until the current round of Nintendo execs die off or retire, I don't see any of this changing substantially.
@bandannadoo

That is an interesting perspective. Even with Super Mario Bros, Koji Kondo talks about how the gameplay is enhanced by the music, how there’s almost a rhythm between actions and sounds. With that in mind they could view the music like it’s just a part of the experience rather than its own seperate work. It’s like models and sprites, we don’t expect developers to upload their sprite sheets or models because those things are just a part of the game. Maybe they don’t like the music being uploaded because it’s being separated from the ‘experience’, you’re no longer enjoying the music in the context of playing the game. They don’t see why people would want to listen to the music by itself because it’s just a part of an already existing experience. It would be a dumb rationalisation for sure, but I wouldn’t put that past Nintendo.

I remember when this happened to SilvaGunner, I kept hearing people saying that it wasn't Nintendo the company, and was just someone abusing the system and claiming they were 'Nintendo'. Filling in all the blanks necessary to seem legit, and just throwing channels into disarray for 'fun' or something. Whether this is true or not, I've got no idea, but I'd hope youtube's copyright system wouldn't have such holes in their copyright-claiming system. Though, KZbin doesn't seem that pressed to fix their systems in order to better protect their creators, whether this accusation is true or not. On one hand, I can definitely imagine Nintendo not paying attention to their KZbin presence to the point of not even noticing some bad-actor using their name to false claim music for some 'chaotic schadenfreude'. And I've heard of people posting music onto youtube they don't own for the sole purpose of copyright striking popular, but niche, songs that sample some things here and there, for profit. Saying they're the 'original creator' or the like. But on the other hand, Nintendo lawyers are infamous for things that'd fall right under this petty music strikedown sort of drama. The last thing on their mind seems to be the fans, so I also wouldn't put it past those lawyers to be striking down music alongside little fangames and such. And the fact they were so legislative about copyright striking people showing the Steam Deck emulating Switch/other Nintendo consoles makes me think someone at Nintendo is a lot less youtube-illiterate as people may think. And are sadly malicious about it. Eitherway, liked the video, and the solutions you thought up. I really hope to be able to hear classic Nintendo music on youtube again. [Just going to blast Super Paper Mario songs from mp3 files for the time being, I guess] 👍

I would say that a boycott to lighten Nintendo's cash flow would be the best way to discourage their anti-consumer practices, but nobody fucking bothers with boycotts. Most people will complain about a company, and buy their products regardless. Why do you people give Nintendo a pass for being the video game equivalent of Disney? Palpatine said it best- *"Look what you have made."*

Another bonus of putting their music on KZbin? They could make thousands. People play game soundtracks in the backround, looping for hours, they forget to turn them off, while they sleep, the views this would pull in, the money this would pull in. There’s no downside.

I think that uploading tracks to streaming would be one of the strongest options. Other companies have figured this one out (soundtracks for stuff like silent hill and Chrono trigger, alongside pretty much every indie game got uploaded to Spotify, for example) and I'm honestly surprised that Nintendo hasn't figured this one out. These days it feels like they're scared of pleasing their audience

Oh my god, a customizable loop # option is such a freaking good idea, that would almost singlehandedly win me over to them exclusively releasing all their music on a dedicated NSO app-- that's such a cool idea and something I _always wish were easier to do_ (like if you wanna make different length extensions you have to, like, open audacity, and find the exact loop, and _bluuuruururuggh)_ that you literally wouldn't _be able to do_ on KZbin or Spotify or what have you, it's perfect. EDIT: Also fwiw, I really enjoyed listening to this, haha-- I honestly would love more content like this to just listen to in the background while I work on stuff, you got a real good voice for prattling... which doesn't _sound_ like a compliment, I'm aware, but--

Something they should do for playlists if they go the youtube route is making the playlists go by in game order rather than alphabetical order (kind of like how the undertale soundtrack is ordered). This way, if you dont know the special name of a song used in the soundtrack, but you did know when it plays in the game, you could find it easier. For example, one time I tried to find "Tutankoopa's threats 1" (it plays after you do the three stone puzzle) for a video. I didnt know the name of it so it took 2 hours to find it. If the potential official nintendo playlist had the songs in game order, this wouldnt be an issue since I know exactly where it plays. Anyway here's something unrelated. 33:40 Imagine if this idea existed and the original fire temple theme was there. That would be really neat (I like the og one more) but would probably not happen (if the beta idea happened at all and alongside a nintendo music app)

Nintendo has so many reasons to be the most hated gaming company, yet fans tend to PRAISE Nintendo for being so constantly awful to us. They're the oldest modern gaming company, and their business model is antique and predatory. PC ports would fly off the shelves/steam, but people actually praise the greed and laziness involved in never porting games unless it's to their proprietary underpowered systems.

I'm somewhat wondering if one of the reasons Nintendo doesn't release their stuff is cause they don't want to pay extra to their composers. The only time they release music from what I can see is limited cd releases in Japan. I do not know how the music industry works, but if composers get royalties for their music being released, that could be the reason.

I actually had an idea for the longest time to make a music streaming service (something like Spotify/Apple Music) especially dedicated to VGM. I had a ton of Ideas for the extra features and what you could do with it and the ideas in this vid certainly contributed. I just don't really have the resources for such an ambitious project, like you would have to request copyright for everything if you want to make any kind of profit and buy servers and all that, so it's pretty much just a dream of mine. Hope some makes it someday tho

another neat feature for the video game music service could be letting you link your account to your actual game platform accounts like nintendo and steam and have it generate playlists based on your game library or recent games! i do get kind of tired of going through and adding stuff from every album i know to any new instrumental playlist and ALWAYS forgetting to add one. the time to sort through each one for the right style for the list is also time consuming. an included library of sound effects could be awesome too, especially if they let you mix and match sounds from different games to make an awesome set of ringtones! a nintendo-only version of this would be ok but i think this could actually be really cool if all or most of the big video game companies worked together on this

The best way for Nintendo to upload soundtracks: Stores like itunes/Google: pay for each album separately, sucks for consumers but would be the most profitable. KZbin: they could and would monetize every video which would bring them a lot of money as well. Spotify: Basically made for music so this would be best but I have no clue how revenue works on there. Nintendo Switch Online App: this would give the app a reason to actually exist and it would be App exclusive, so no possibility for users to own and use them in other things. But then there would be the drip feed.

This is why I get all my Nintendo music in MIDI! Regardless good video thanks for setting this discussion up though I do agree more important things happening at the moment glad to see, love (Considering the midwest right now is 'love' the right term? pity might be closer...), to see another midwesterner though! Okay but like can I mention that your voice gets better in literally EVERY video, I adore it absolutely adorable! An alternate and likely outcome I don't see you mentioning is what they have been doing, which I don't see many people talking about which is releasing soundtrack CDs every time they release a game. Not many people talk about them cause they aren't well known but often time Nintendo produces a soundtrack disc with upcoming releases the most memorable one of these of course is the sampling they released alongside Skyward Sword on Wii but there are a bunch more than that like Animal Crossing or the Breath of the Wild sound selection, I actually wonder if that's what they mean by taking down youtube content, they expect you to go out and buy their CDs. Which Mentioning it that is definitely the reason Japan is one of the highest consumers of CDs in the world accounting for 75% of recorded music sales in 2020 which companies like because they're the most brand-friendly in terms of licensing cause they just have to get the rights once print the CDs and be done with it, there's an unofficial list of Nintendo CDs here: nintendo.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_soundtracks vitally I think it's worth noting it includes every Zelda game since Wind Waker which makes me think that's how they expect people to purchase music which is utterly unacceptable in the digital age but looking at it it makes a lot of sense that they'd want to keep it walled off in copy protected disk with strict rights over anything else especially due to their popularity in their home country, so there's that rabbit hole plumbed I suppose I'm guessing they view KZbin as lost revenue cause you *could* instead go buy a CD instead, which honestly looking it through that lens explains a lot of things cause the only song they uploaded was one without a soundtrack CD yet for that reason so yeah, but you did a great job with this video thanks for making it so yeah my that's my theory my Game Music Theory, thanks for reading. Hope to see more of your content soon!

Nice video. It really sucks that Nintendo would try to remove soundtracks on the internet, then more people are gonna post their music. It's basically a losing battle for them. By the way, I have an idea that you haven't thought of. Nintendo should upload compilations of their music. Music compilations have been a very popular genre when it comes to their game's music. My favorites compilations are the "relaxing" and "no thoughts, head empty" ones. It also has my favorite people on there, such as Luigi, shadowatnoon, and Ezonater. It sucks that the people I mentioned got struck for this. Maybe Nintendo can hire them to make compilations. It would be nice.
