Here in NZ our new government scrapped the EV subsidy, introduced per km road user charge at the same rate as upto 3.5 ton diesel vehicles, watered down the clean car standard so dealerships could import dirtier vehicles without financial pentalty, and this has resulted in a huge drop in EV registrations here. I'm not saying that we shouldn't pay tax for using the road, because we no longer pay the portion of tax at the petrol pump, I just think it wasn't the right time, or it should have been introduced slowly.

@ that’s really sad , as new Zealand is a very beautiful place , I use to live their in Rotorua 1980 as a kid , but I hated being called a pommy , mum dad did too , but we never use to say anything as really we just wanted to fit in , my dad got into a couple of fights over bullying which was crazy as my dad was a pro boxer , they all loved him after that , I miss the beautiful beeches & when u drive ur car on a long trip u don’t see another car for ages some times , I always think of going back but I don’t want to be called a pommy , I’m not the only one like this , but when I see a Australian guy here or a New Zealander I always treat them good as I want them enjoy their stay , our friend comes to U.K. many times and loves travelling to Europe also , she has rented out a place in Germany for 3 months and is going to the German Christmas market with my sister soon , and their are many beautiful places to eat in France where u can experience the wine yards , Rve de marrich in Lyon is beautiful in the summer ,come and see , I hope u all vote that new government out that makes u pay per km. in U.K. we also have bad governments ruling us , we also have no ev incentives , we have a bully mayor that is building places only for Muslims near temples , ha ha. I got mates that are Muslims and I love them , but it’s wrong , I was delighted that trump & elon won the election , trump says he will stop the ukrain war , as Russian lifes matter too , , no body no ruler is saying that and our U.K. government said , the point of a war is to win it , we already had Iraq war were we was in the wrong & Vietnam where we was in the wrong also It seems , U.K. just wants to supply it and send billions of £ same as USA , many of the £ & $ have gone missing also , Stop the nz goverment charge per km , U.K. London mayor was trying to introduce that but we found out about it and stopped him , Maybe a few of u should take nz gov to court for charging ev per mile , if u win it will stop other countries doing it , All cost money sadly , Good luck ,

I drive a Toyota BZ and RAV4 prime. But Chinese are going all guns with EV.

In Massachusetts, nadda ir no special taxes. And, $3,500 dollar EV incentive. And power companies are giving 5 cents per kilowatt hr discount for home charging off peak on weekdays. This is the way it should be to promote sustainable mobility! Taxes don’t need to be tied to mobility and can be begotten through income taxes, property taxes, etc. It is a crutch in the US which has mainly been sold as a way to pay for roads and infrastructure. It has been abused on the state level to help poorly run states manage their budgets. Toll roads is another similar way to take additional money.

Great discussion, guys. On the 1000km range or higher, I don't look at it from a how far can you go before recharging on 1 trip but more of how long can you drive your vehicle without needing to charge it. I tested my 2017 KIA Optima Hybrid's range by filling the tank to the top and drove it 980+ miles, which was 2+ weeks (commute was 70 mile daily). Imagine if one could charge a 85kWh battery and drive it for a month before needing to charge again, with a 100 mile per day usage, for 30 days. Not that most people do that but that could be 2-3 months before recharging for some people's use case, depending on the vehicle. I'm thinking about a vehicle that had roughly 250-300hp with good torque numbers, 270-300 lb ft (366-406 Nm) and the size of a Xpeng G6. I don't see that happening as manufacturers would charge an arm and a leg for it as people would probably keep it for 5+ years before needing a new vehicle. It would however, get more people that worry about range anxiety on board, especially if there is minimal risk of thermal runaway and it can retain a 80% after 8 years of usage. Yeah, big dream but, what if?

While the High Court win (equivalent of the US Supreme Court) was good for Australia, it would be of little value in other countries. It was based on the Australian Constitution that makes excise taxes the exclusive province of the Federal Government. States can’t charge excise taxes, income taxes, or sales taxes among others. Only the Federal Government can. The fundamental flaw with the State Government position was that it was taxing people for money they (the government) never lost in the first place. By now, you can probably see where this is going. It s probably only a matter of time before the Federal Government imposes such a tax.

At last year’s climate conference in the United Arab Emirates, 22 countries pledged, for the first time, to TRIPLE the world’s use of nuclear power by midcentury to help curb global warming. At this year’s summit in Azerbaijan, six more countries signed the pledge. The list of countries pledging to build new nuclear reactors, which IS THE ONLY SOURCE TO generate electricity without emitting ANY planet-warming greenhouse gases, includes longtime users of the technology like Canada, France, South Korea and the United States. But it also includes countries that don’t currently have any nuclear capacity, like Kenya, Mongolia and Nigeria. In Britain, the United States, and many other countries, politicians and businesses want to phase out fossil fuels saying they need a CONSTANT AND GROWING source of carbon-free electricity to complement solar and wind power, which HAVE NEVER BEEN available at all hours.

I have a suggestion: just tax gasoline more to make up for the lost revenue from evs. Two birds with one stone, incentive and retaining revenue to maintain roads. Yes it's a penalty for driving ice, and that's just fine. After mostly transitioned this can be switched to something else, but nobody cares until we're there. It's a pretty cool idea actually I think, self reinforcing ev adoption. Though my favorite is tax fossil fuel profits and bond returns at 90%

The problem in Australia is that governments think personal transport is a luxury. Politicians like to tax electric cars. They say motorists have to pay for roads. But most money isn't used for roads. Sydney has the most toll roads in the world. Roads that have already been paid for through roads taxes. It's a money grab.

Electric vehicle owners in Alberta, Canada, will need to come up with a $200 CAD to pay an annual electric vehicle tax, starting January 2025. I am hoping the EV owners here get a good lawyer to fight this in court too. The province said that the money will help account for wear and tear on roads, and make up for the fuel tax that electric vehicles owners don't pay. Hybrid vehicles will not be paying the tax. The provincial government is stating that weight is one of the reasons why the tax is being implemented. I cannot believe the miss information even the government is spreading about all EV's being way heavier than a ICE. Hoping that Chris can offer some advice on fighting this to William York, the president of Electric Vehicle Association of Alberta.

So how about eliminating ALL taxes on petrol and moving ALL vehicles to a miles (kilometers) driven system with a multiplier for weight? Heavier vehicles do more damage to the roads and should pay more. In that system the owner pays for the wear and tear on the roads and some additional to pay for expansion of the system which they can use. The odometer reading could be checked as part of the yearly registration or safety check. The mileage fee then could be added or subtracted from the coming year’s registration fee. The market, not the government, then provides the incentive for EVs based on the lower cost of electricity per Km versus petrol and lower maintenance costs.

Sure, so let’s fossil fuel subsidies also hey? Sounds like a great plan. Also, while you’re at it you’d better check up on weight of EVs, you’ll be surprised to find out that they don’t weight more, or at most only a tiny amount more, than their ICE counterparts (keep in mind ICE weight denoted is dry weight). For example, latest Tesla Model 3 weighs less than the latest Merc C-class/BMW 3 series. You want to get serious, then keep it fair across the board…so to that end ICE can pay a higher KM rate than EV because they dirt bags are killing people (you know the extra cost to our health care system)…. So how about it, yeah? Go for it?
@FoamCrusher
@FoamCrusher 15 күн бұрын
@@robanzzz5124 In California at least, the registration on trucks is very expensive, in part to generate money for road repairs, beyond what is collected as taxes on fuel. We pay the cost of the fuel, the Federal fuel tax, a state fuel tax and a sales tax on all three - a tax on two taxes! If those extra fees were eliminated and the only tax was for miles driven with a multiplier for gross weight it would cost trucking companies about the same and possibly less if they didn’t drive a particular vehicle too much. It would take some real numbers to accurately select the multiplier, but it would certainly even out the disparity between ICE and EV costs and would cut the costs for vehicle are not driven very much. Overall it would be a “pay to play” or drive in this case and the money collected would be directly related to the costs incurred by the government to build and maintain the roads. I know….dream on 😁
@Hooliosis
@Hooliosis 13 күн бұрын
@@scotmacrae7962so taxing people who can’t afford an ev more, that sounds fair. You do realise that anyone driving a second hand ice vehicle, will save more on emissions than anyone buying a new car of any sort. Tax them more and they will never afford an ev. Buying of second hand ice vehicles is integral to reducing emissions.

1000km battery ? Probably not needed for most people . However, really good for 4wd utes which are the most popular car sold in this country . Also really great for V2L and V2G . Great for towing .They could take the average house off grid easily. That's why a 1000 km battery or equivalent is so important . lt means that with that energy density, small cars could have a much smaller battery making them as light as an ice vehicle . lt also means that technology will spill into all devices such as phones etc . A battery technology with that energy density really completes the renewable solution/revolution.

As an owner of two EV's, who benefited from zero sales tax from the state of New Jersey in the USA, I see no problem with state governments charging a tax on EV's for road maintenance. In New Jersey the tax on gasoline is for road maintenance. EV drivers (like me) were getting away with murder. Now that New Jersey has reached a goal of about 12% of new car sales being BEVs, they have increased the registration fee to $250 for EV's (about $50 for an ICE car) to make up for the lost revenue. I am perfectly ok with this. Giving preferential tax treatment to EV owners just builds resentment towards EV's and their owners from people who can't afford them, or live in apartments where there is no way to charge them economically.

Our gas tax about $.44 gallon goes into a transportation trust fund that finances road and rail projects. If gas tax revenues drop the state can adjust the tax upward to make up for shortfalls. But since EV sales are growing in the state of NJ they decided to raise the registration fee to make up for the gas tax EV drivers are not paying.

Looks like you "guessed" wrong. Who do you think actually manages, maintains and provides roads? In Victoria for example it is the following authorities. Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) municipal councils (involved in CBD & metropolitan roads) Transurban (toll roads) Connect East (toll roads) Southern Way (toll roads) Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) plus other government departments. So EV drivers are contributing via municipal council rates So EV drivers are contributing via road tolls As a side note also consider, that EVs have the potential to reduce the funding burden for medical and hospital care, since they do not emit health damaging pollution. Thereby reducing the financial burden on the public health system, which should equate to a reduced tax burden on the population. Globally, if my memory serves me well, the statics say that around 6 million people die prematurely annually, due to illness directly associated with combustion vehicle emission pollutants. Deisel being the worst offender. So your apparent claim of "only petrol cars" are paying, ignores that they are actually an indirect cost burden on the population as well. To wrap it up, it's is not like EV drivers are not contributing at all. That said, I would concede that at some point, the funding of the road system probably needs to be reviewed, to ensure that any funding burden is fairly distributed across the population. Please refrain in future from making what appears to be really poorly considered and emotive commentary. Thank you.

It is old school thinking that petrol pump taxes pay for roads, it changed years ago (in Australia). Now the taxes from the pump just go into a general tax revenue pool to be distributed wherever the government feels it best needs to go. This was happening before EV's were really even a thing.

@@rossmyers8448 Only my response to the OP had nothng to do with how with the government manages the actual revenue. You stepped outside of context, which was that the OP seemed to think that EV owners are not contributing at all to the revenue the government receives. Which is incorrect. By the way, I fail to see why it matters that the revenue collected goes into consolidated revenue. What actually matters is that the roads are provided and maintained and the funds to do so are available to achieve that when and as required. That is what government department budgets are all about, distributing the consolidated public funds where they are needed.

Isn't road pricing an absolute necessity? I won't argue whether this version was good or bad. But roads are not free, and its absurd the drivers should ever expect them to be. Roads cost money. Charge drivers. Charge ICEV drivers more!

I guess the problem is that roads are funded by the exise tax. Exempting EVs will bankrupt the road fund as their numbers increase.

Which is why our new government here in New Zealand implemented per km road user charge (RUC) for EVs back in April this year. It's the same $76/1000km as an up to 3.5T diesel vehicle. PHEVs pay half and hybrids even less. ~74% of the running costs of our EV is RUC (tax)

If this works for NZ it will be adopted by other countries. Currently most EVs in Australia are charged using fossil fuels.

Good luck with that in America😂🤣The translation/interpretation of the US Constitution absolutely gives the state the 'right' to tax-the-💩out of every mile you drive on state roads. They can either collect from the owner/driver ...or at the EV charger, for the 'privilege' to use public roads and to maintain those roads(...?) There will also be a 'weight-tax' when the vehicle is registered(.) Yeah, you can use home charging, but there's at least one state in the USA that is taxing solar panels, and if not increasing your property taxes for solar[...kWhs]🤯🤑 Enjoy the 'reprieve', because there's going to be some state compensation sooner or later, even in Australia. Somebody gotta pay, and you may want to 'think' about the manufacturer/distributor/installer paying the 'electric-tax' up front, and the owner/driver pay a registration fee every year(?...) Cheers @chrisvanderstock🍻 🇦🇺 Takes courage to take-on the state, and more than a little[$] here in the USA🤬🇺🇲

You do realise that governments need money to build and maintain roads. The fuel tax is a sunstantial source of this funding. When the last ICE vehicle retires what will replace the fuel tax.

Do people seriously think you can run a sustainable transport system where car usage is as good as free? One of the reason fuel was taxed heavily was to supress car usage - without that car usage will grow and grow causing ever more . Be aware you can't build your way out of congestion - just look at America - it tried and failed. Cars simply take up too much space in towns and cities - moving round in a 2 tonne steel cage with a near empty sofe inside is just bonkers. You guys may know a great deal about EVs but are completely naiive about transport policy!

It will be overturned. EV owners need to pay their fair share of road taxes and other taxes just like gas. Fair is fair You have to pay your fair share play

I don't mind paying my "fair" share but in Texas US folks are paying about $70 a year in gas tax but I have to pay an extra $200 to register my vehicle. That's not a one for one swap. The folks paying gas tax also have the option to drive less and save money, I don't.
