not having constraints when i'm creating content makes me feel completely unhinged like i'm floating in space with nothing to ground into. it's SUPER overwhelming. if you ever re-explore this topic for a future video, i'd love to hear 1) more examples of constraints we can implement and/or 2) how to implement them step-by-step into our process.

Thanks Jay, I just found out about this paradox thanks to you. As a creator, I believe to be suffering from this. When I have a LOOOONG list of possible ideas for videos, I suddenly feel so much overwhelmed and I stop producing because I don’t want to choice the “right” idea to make a video about.

I am almost certain you’ve already read it, but highly recommend Rick Rubin’s The Creative Act. There is loads of tips like this in there!

I really like the idea of constraints leading to imagination. Back in highschool in my Video Production class, pretty much every assignment we would have to include a certain type of shot, a prop, dialogue, etc. in the video. It helped alleviate the stress of everything being possible and led to some creative ways to incorporate those requirements. I've tried to carry on that belief of constraints and it's always an uphill battle. Thanks for the reminder, I appreciate the video!

Nice self-constraints Jay! You really have a knack for talking nonstop in one take. You should continue to do long takes like this one, they're really good. I'm very happy to see you posting more often than once a week.

even if you rehearsed this / tried a few takes, the one single shot (with fact checks in post) flows nicely & suits the format well!

If you look at the Summer box office what were the most successful films? Oppenheimer and Barbie. Both had relatively small budgets ($100 - $145 Million) compared to other films that failed at the box office like Indiana Jones, The Flash & The little Mermaid ($300 Million). While yes $100 Million is definitely alot of money. It still was a limited budget for what Gerwig and Nolan wanted to achieve with both films. However both films came out as a masterpiece. Where the filmmakers used the budget to their limitations. Gerwig created a whole Barbie land practical set and used outdated film techniques from the golden age of Hollywood. While Nolan made a full on replica explosion of the trinity test. I would much rather watch that type of film on a limited budget vs a $300 Million film where it's all CGI. Using limitation in your projects honestly an elite strategy to turn pro at something!

I want to get better at drawing, I used to spend most of the day drawing and most of the time I ended up staring at a blank page waiting for more ideas. But now I keep myself busy with other things and then when I'm finally ready to draw knowing I'm on a time crunch I am more eager to start and I think I have better ideas because of it!

Jay, make a video about effectiveness in content creation. You've made one about perfectionism, but I believe there is something more to discuss.

dang jay really feel compelled to leave a comment with this one I subbed with the "you tube, we have a problem" video, I'm super passionate about editing and really loved the editing on that video. So I was subbed for editing inspiration in a way, and with the on camera face reveal the editing became less and less. Which I completely understood because it takes up so much time that "you tube we have a problem" video must have taken forever to edit. Anywho I've been hanging around because I think you have a genuinely interesting perspective on you tube, and creativity and (creativity on you tube) With the last two videos your whole new style has clicked for me, and I'm no longer here for the editing, I'm here for you, and your perspective and your journey. Your last video really nailed why you've been shifting your style since the "we have a problem" video, because that video style wasn't really you. This video style is really you, or well one step in the direction towards the unique style that is you. And to speak to the subject on the video itself, I agree completely as much as I wish I had all the money in the world for camera gear and equipment and super fast computers for editing. I know for a fact if i hit the lottery tomorrow it would destroy my creativity unless I had a tremendous will to limit myself, keep it simple, keep it authentic, whittle it down to the bare minimum, it's always about the connection, the story, the message. Everything else is sparkle and shine.
@thejayalto6 ай бұрын
Perfectly said. And yes, the channel has been through a few evolutions since starting. The first step that a lot of creators ignore is finding the style of video you actually want to make, and then adjusting for the audience (not the other way around). I've found my style. Now it's all about making them the best they can be.

The thing about constraints is most people you have heard of that use them have mastered their crafts first- then they used constraints to help or make interesting. (picasso was a brilliant painter first then started fucking around 😂 ) Don't forget the master the craft part.
@thejayalto6 ай бұрын
I somewhat agree. But I think a massive part of mastering your craft is doing the work. And limitations are insanely powerful at helping you do the work.
