Here on TheTopher, I'm known for putting a camera on my face and driving cars. Whether it's about any of my personal cars or reviews on weekly press vehicles, the goal is to give you an idea of what a certain car is like to drive or live with. Most of my videos are filmed in POV, with my clothes on, and (for like the 5th time) with in-ear binaural audio. Which, if I haven't made it clear yet, is why you should wear headphones. Because of the whole "woah" factor. It's there, trust me. Try it, it's pretty nuts. Or don't. As long as you whitelist me on your adblocker I'm okay with whatever you do or don't do with regards to headphone usage. That is all. Oh and I guess you should also probably subscribe. Why are you still reading this, you should be watching the video. With headphones! Hah, had to sneak that in there one more time. Later!

The Veloster N has joined the ranks of very few cars that I actually like and want to buy at this point. As odd as this comparison sounds, it gave me similar vibes to the M2 Competition I drove - It's hoonable but more importantly, it's fun 100% of the time. Considering that's what I prioritize in a car over anything else, it makes it near the top of my list.

It's interesting, I've owned a WRX, Focus ST, RS, and a Type R, and my favorite without a doubt was the Focus ST. The torque steer, the laggy-ish build up of the turbo, the ease of ownership - it all added up to fun to drive, loved it. I have a friend with an N and I say alot of the same things. ^^ the N feels like so much more of a well rounded car that is able to race and track very well and is so comfortable to drive, while the R is a monster in autocross and a missle at high speed, but rides so hard in R mode and has a sound system that needs alot of work to sound good. With these cars, you either love them or hate them. I personally never cared about Hyundai until I recently got a 2015 R-Spec 6spd for a good price. I fell in love with it. It's different, that's for sure. The way it drives and handles. 1st gen has some minor issues that could have been made better from the factory but it's nothing super serious and it gets addressed with the 2nd gen. My next car is definitely going to be another Veloster. Hoping on getting an N with the performance package here in a year or two. It's great seeing this becoming more widespread and more reviews on it. As I think most people skip over this when they hear "hyundai" as I feel like most people are still in the same boat as I was. Associate it with a cheap and crappy type of car. But if you are willing so sacrifice a bit of interior quality for the actual interior design/layout and what the car gives you in return (in terms of performance, etc) for the price point, it is hands down the best hot hatch you can buy right now.

I think it is the fairly simple where it slots in. It is the highest performing hot hatch besides the type-R at the track and on the street. It is more reliable(so far no issue if you get accessory pads and no trans or cooling issue like the type r) than it and more fun but not quite as livable or as fast at the limits but also much cheaper day to day. It is less of a daily than a gti, gli, or golf R but it is cheaper and/or faster than all of them(veloster N with the accessory pads has been beating the golf R on road courses). But you lose the automatic the and interior isn't as nice and the ride quality suffers.

@@mickydrake1278 I disagree and that's a matter of preference. I love both vehicles as they are perfectly kick ass IMO, but there are many, many, many things I prefer about the vel N over CTR... Price is important too! I'd say the N is more set up for how I want my car as a daily driver than the Honda. If I was considering doing a crap load of track driving I may have considered the type R, but maybe not? I'm sure a seasoned driver in the N could beat the pants off a newb driver in a type R. I've seen both, driven both, really like both, and I could have afforded either. I actually looked at performance cars priced above the over priced Civic type R and I went with the Veloster N. It's just fun as hell man, a real blast, like driving an oversized go cart that you can point and shoot. Now after having it for 5k miles and 4 months of driving it, I'm even more satisfied with my decision. I've bought vehicles brand new before, and within a few days, or weeks I find myself wishing I'd bought something else. In fact that has happened to me EVERY time I have purchased a new car and I'm 52 y/o, so I've had plenty of them over the years. This is the first time that I can say I've been more and more secure about my decision. Pretty sad, but I really love this little car and it's More than the bottom line numbers. My opinion

Do a couple test drives of both vehicles before you choose lol I'd reccomend the N cause like a comment befor said "90% of the R for 75% of the price " As someone who's neutral when it comes to hondas, I'd choose the N on looks and practicality for price Looks like the type R is the Honda fanboys holygrail and nothing beats it to them so anything you see about "oh the R is obviously better" I'd disregard. Theres a really good video comparing the 2 directly. I'll find the video name real quick. Channel name is "thestraightpipes" It's a great comparison video.

Great video again! Making my decisions easier yet harder at the same time. Really wondering what the GTI is missing, that the Veloster N has, that makes it less fun. Is it tendency to understeer, lose traction on acceleration and turn in? Or does the sound of the car make that much of an impact? Rear sway bar + JB4 tune + exhaust on a GTI might be my pick if that really is the case.

You can't justify another car based on modifications though. The fact that you have to void warranty on another new car to match a rival says a lot.
@thecrads102
@thecrads102 4 жыл бұрын
@@ashcosmo3854 It does. Veloster N is a very compelling package, but I just can't get over the third door and slight lack of basic creature comforts like heated seats, since I live in the North. I also don't want to deal with 19" rims, and having to switch them out for 18's right off the bat. I would have immediately bought the I30N if it was here (and if it had heated seats), but the next closest thing would be a GTI. A big benefit of the GTI is the availability of CPO. I can get a 2018 SE with less than 5k miles for around $25000, which is $4000 less than the VN. All the while with a bigger color selection. I'm not sure if I'm going to ever track it, so I would need something that dailies better. Slight modification here and there for a GTI to be a bit more aggressive is okay. I might not even JB4 it (which is reversible), so no real warranties would be voided. My real mod is getting a miata as the neighbor.

My take in three words: connectedness, grip, and sound. The GTI is an extremely well-rounded machine that balances livability, practicality, refinement, and features with driving excitement and performance. The N, while it can be a surprisingly civil daily, is just balls-to-the-wall insane overall and it's design skews heavily towards performance and driving excitement. It's steering system is simply brilliant. The limits of its grip are notable given it can sustain momentum in a way that many more expensive cars cannot. Turn-in is stupid sharp...you find that perfect turn-in point and the N is a tack-driver that immediately follows your every command. Understeer mitigation is excellent for a FWD car, driving position is fantastic, the ability to customize just about every aspect of the car's performance and electronic functions is exceptional, and the sound is bat shit crazy. From that first turn, it's very obvious that you are in a car that has been designed around driving excitement and prioritizes this above everything else. It's a very different design philosophy IMHO.

Yea I might be making a mistake in trying to mod the GTI into becoming close to a Veloster N. It's just that there really aren't that many turns where I live. It's a grid of potholes with the occasional on ramp. More research it is, but hopefully someone who has driven a mk7 GTI + RSB and a Veloster N can chime in.

@@npaul4171 Have you driven it in normal mode ? I agree the interior of the VW is nicer but the N in normal mode is close to no different than a GTI. Then you can flick it in N mode and it becomes a totally different beast. The GTI.. well.. you're just stuck with a GTI. I agree though the I30N blows the Veloster away in most liveable aspects. I can't believe they didn't give America the I30..

I made an offer on a Type R a few weeks ago. It was a 2019 and 2020s are already out and much improved. The lowest the dealer would go was $38k! MRSP is $34,700 and it's an older model year now... I got a 2020 Veloster N instead for $27k WITH Performance Pack! I'm putting about $3200 of mods in so... $30,200 and I'll be 400bhp 500tq output and still $8k cheaper than a Type R. No brainer

You'll need the warranty. I'm a victim of the GDi engines they build. Failed at 52,000 with full maintenance. They were quick to replace it, but I still haven't seen the car since June. Buyer beware. Hyundai/Kia build fantastic vehicles until the engine fails. I'd go for a Subaru, but I've heard they aren't much better with head gaskets. I don't know for certain how true that is, just what I've heard about newer Subarus. I can definitely confirm Kia/Hyundai engines are terrible though. Be wise my dude.

I've had a 17 Civic si, 13 Focus ST, 16 Fiesta ST, MK4/5 Gti. The Ford products were a lot of fun but the quality wasn't nearly as good as anything from Europe or Japan. A car developing rust after two years (both Fords) is totally unacceptable, which is a shame because I loved driving those cars. German cars have their quirks but they are build far better. The Civic had the perfect chassis and brakes for the street and the engine was phenomenal on fuel but had the personality of a kitchen appliance. Looking forward to driving a Veloster N, I like the way they look and sound and I expect the quality to be very good as well.
