Keep in mind these rebels are also a major reason the TIE Defender project was brought down, which would have vastly strengthened the Imperial Starfleet as a whole and made it practically unstoppable. Its failure meant the Empire would be reliant on the Death Star to maintain supremacy, which he knew was strategically unsound and likely doomed. By this point this rebel cell had caused such a level of damage to his plans and the Empire on a scale even they couldn't conceive of yet, that Thrawn would legitimately be compelled towards cruelty just to end it all.

It was the other half of the equation the imperial leadership didn't realize they needed for their super weapon. The assault in a New Hope would have gone very differently with them present in a fully deployed role.

I think this fits well with an interpretation of the Empire that I have seen elsewhere - that it slowly corrupts even the most nobly-intentioned servants. Thrawn is extremely smart, and very devoted to the Chiss, but even he is not smart enough to thread this needle, because Palpatine and the Empire's hunger for control is simply too all-consuming.

Palpatine was/is a tangled mass of plots, plans, and contingencies, wheels within wheels, and at the core is the impenetrable will of a mad force user. No, one could thread a needle through Sheev Palpatines machinations. Best solution is Alexander the Great's for the Gordian Knot, cut it if you can.

Tell that to Darth Plagueis lol. Thrawn himself would always tell you he *had* choices. He chose what he wanted. If he had been Force Sensitive, perhaps he could have had the most terrifying name in Star Wars: DARTH THRAWN. as a Darth, he could possibly have inherited the Sith Empire "in the culturally traditional manner", without truly going against Palpatine's interests, because of the convenience of how "interests" can be interpreted by a Sith Lord concerning another Sith Lord. This would be an extremely Thrawnian trick, using "Sith Culture" as the excuse for his betrayal while satisfying Thrawn's personal love of honor. Don't you just LOVE it?

Exactly Thrawn quickly realized that Palpatine is more concerned about power than order. He only says as much to his subordinates like Vader or Tarkin. In their one on one conversation I assume Thrawn sees the Ascendancy as a threat to his power and his intellect isn't of use to Palpatine anymore.

Thrawn's *actual* big question about the Death Star was "why are we diverting so many resources to *one super-big target* when we could reroute those resources to making our existing fleet to be more mobile and have the advanced technologies that I took with me from the Unknown Regions, like Interdictor cruisers and hyperdrive-equipped TIE Fighters?" In "Rebels," Tarkin and Thrawn are shown to be in agreement on the matter, with Tarkin basically saying that Project: Stardust (the Death Star) looks like nothing but pseudoscience and overbudgeted expense reports, while Thrawn's various projects had met their budgets and were based on proven science; there was a caveat though. Since these were Thrawn's upgrades, Tarkin could not speak to the Emperor on behalf on Thrawn; if the two of them wanted funding diverted away from Project: Stardust to Thrawn's projects, Thrawn would would have to speak directly to the Emperor on the matter. Perhaps Tarkin could have nudged the Emperor in Thrawn's direction, but Thrawn needed to be the one to have the conversation. The thing is, Dooku has a hologram of the Death Star on display on Geonosis in "Attack of the Clones," meaning that the Sith have been planning this for years. No amount of logic, whether it comes from Thrawn (the most analytical mind in the galaxy), Tarkin (who Palpatine clearly thought was intelligent enough to run the entire Outer Rim), or Vader (the only person who actually *KNEW* Palpatine) could convince him to shut down the Death Star project.

Palpatine had been building an inner circle of elites to promote to top positions like Tarkin for a very long time, and it could be argued since they were in similar positions of power (Vader being the Emperor's Right Hand, and as Grand Moff the only person Tarking took orders from was the Emperor) they were both likely pre-war "friends" of Sheev.

True, the two are bound to have developed a healthy respect for one another after having been former enemies who might now need to work together to survive. So it could then follow that the two would start off as tentative allies who eventually grew to become actual friends.

I think the initial issue to cause the most trouble for Ezra is going to be the crew of the Chimera, until his actions, Thrawn and circumstances occur to allow them to tolerate if not trust him. They must have ended up outside the known part of the Galaxy, and in space unfamiliar to Thrawn as well, or they would have returned before the Battles of Endor or Jakku. However even a damaged Imperial Star Destroyer has a lot of fire power (both space and ground forces) and personnel on board.

Thrawn plan was strategically correct, he thought that joining the Empire, and gaining power within the Empire would make him powerful enough to protect his people. He developed this plan with the consideration that the Emperor was a more rational and intelligent being. He told the Emperor I will serve the Empire, prtotect the Empire against the threats that lurk beyond in the Unknown Regions and at the same time I will protect my own people of this threats. But he never took into consideration that Palpatine was a mad man, a powerful sith who would use him, of course, to protect his Empire for those threats but at the same time he probably will kill him and slave his people, when Thrawn wasn’t useful anymore to his purposes. I love Thrawn, btw, he’s the most complex, intellgent and interesting characters in all Star Wars history.

I will admit that I do like the idea of Thrawn eventually returning as a "good guy" after the Empire has collapsed. I mean, just imagine what sort of things Thrawn would have been able to do if he was suddenly an ally for the Rebels and Jedi rather than an enemy serving the Empire? Thrawn was such a spectacular leader and strategist that having his tactical genius working towards the same goals as the Jedi would have made for one hell of a formidable force. I also like to think that Thrawn could have even someday become friends with the likes of Luke, Leia, & Han....in much the same way that Pellaeon was on friendly terms with them in the Legends novels.

"Maybe it will be Ezra who will lift Thrawn back to his feet". I was thinking the exact same thing! Thrawn is a brilliant tactician and constantly looking out to cultivate people with potential. Yet I consider it a flaw that he underestimated Ezra's potential and character in the "Rebels" finale. He called Ezra a "poorly-trained child" only to be defeated by him. Ezra has every reason to mistrust Thrawn but I think once he's aware of the Chiss girls, he won't turn away from people who need help understanding the Force. And perhaps Thrawn could teach Ezra some tactical skills so that the young Jedi can build himself up into being a suitable leader/teacher.

There are also space crabs. Not in rebels, but in one of the darth vader comics. Also, i can whales being able to survive somehow. I can't explain it completly, but i can a little. They could be using something similar to anaerobic respiration, which would explain how they are able to stay in space for so long. It's similar to how real whales go long times without breathing.

Interesting twist compared to Legends, I could say it's even a complete 180 degree turn. While Thrawn had divided loyalties even in Legends he viewed the Empire as the ultimate order which is the galaxy's only shot at survival. In new canon Thrawn sees the Empire as a very powerful ally and has official Chiss support to butter them up for an alliance. The relationship between Palpatine and Thrawn is also very different. In Legends the two had mutual respect for each other so the conflict outlined in these novels would've never happened. His actions also marked Thrawn an absolute traitor to the Chiss in Legends and he didn't really care because there was an entire galaxy to save, not just his people. That being said I like this twist overall. Adds more conflict to the character while also eliminating the need for the Yuuzhan Vong to be popping up sometime. Also explains why we don't see Thrawn in the sequel trilogy. He's back with his nation and they secretly do whatever they are doing. Actually, this would put the Ascendancy at odds with the First Order, even making it possible that Thrawn reappears in support of the Resistance. Another interesting fact which I view as a bit of a plot hole is the Death Star. In Legends Thrawn hated the Death Star because it was an inefficient use of resources. Yet during the Yuuzhan Vong War many people thought it'd be awesomely convenient if they could fight back the Vong with the said battlestation. If you squint you might see this as Thrawn thought having twice as many ISDs is better than just having a superweapon that can down any Vong contraption in one shot but it still feels like a plothole to me. In canon Thrawn opposes the Death Star for similar reasons but with no gigantic Vong vessels known this is less of a problem. In addition Thrawn is wary of the Empire and doesn't want them to use such a superweapon on the Chiss. Long story short, I feel Timoty Zahn is not just rewriting Thrawn because it's a new canon but sees it as an opportunity to write him anew with ideas and thoughts he imagined up through the decades of refining this character. We'll see if Thrawn gets more action than he did in the Legends continuity.

I see your point, Although The death star can only be in 1 place at a time, it can wreck the vong ships there for sure. Well depending on the force. But consider how far the conflict stretched across the galaxy. Systems were being wiped out in record time. The new Republic had no where near the required amount of ships and fleet strength to combat them effectively. With Thrawns point of view a larger, more well equipped fleet, elite tie defenders and competent commanders that he either trained/mentored or those he saw as worthy, was the better option. The death star, although was very powerful and formidable, was more along the lines of the Tarkin doctrine. Strike once and cower the rest in fear and intimidation. That doesnt work with the vong or the Krysk. Unfortunately he failed to see how so many of the empire elite were consumed with their own greed and polical maneuvering. Well, not the ability to see it, more the ability to understand how these leaders couldnt grasp the bigger picture and attempted to fix this.

@@DK5589 The problem was that some of the Yuuzhan-Vong contraptions in space were so massive and overall so tough that the Superlaser would've been basically the only decent way to handle them, along with some of the other superweapons. Legends also kinda invalidates any notion of economic gains by the fact World Devastators exist and can produce massive fleet of ships on their own. Seriously, as cool as those are they basically ruin any idea about inudstrial buildup mattering much for the Empire. Back to point the Star Dreadnoughts were absolutely essential in turning the tide in space battles and even those were not enough to handle everything the Vong had. Death Star doesn't need to appear everywhere, not even by a longshot. It only needs to show up where the Vong use their more bullshit vessels so clear the way for the rest of the galaxy's ships to operate like they usually do rather than having their hands tied. In some interpretations Palpatine even designed the Death Stars specifically to fight the Vong. Then again Legends has several explanations for the Death Star, including them creating dark side dexus and indirectly feeding power to Palpatine by the souls it extinguishes. Yeah, it's Legends. No surprises here. I am afraid in Legends it's really just Thrawn making a mistake here. He overestimated the military strength of the Yuuzhan-Vong and underestimated the strength of their individual super vessels and what kind of issues it'd prove. He had next to no information on them so this is understandable. In the end even though the Galactic Alliance had a fraction of fleet power compared to the Empire they still were a match for the Yuuzhan-Vong. A Death Star or two would've actually been a massive asset to fight Vongforming, moon dropping and other BS employed by the Yuuzhan-Vong on occasion.

The thing is Faro was supposed to transfer to Coruscant once they got back to Lothal. Pretty sure after the end of the book they get to Lothal right at the point when Rebels finale takes place so she's probably still on the ship when the whales come. So yeah, Faro is probably safe from Palpatine.

In the new canon, Thrawn sees the Empire as a very powerful ally and has official Chiss support to butter them up for an alliance. The relationship between Palpatine and Thrawn is also very different. In Legends the two had mutual respect for each other so the conflict outlined in these novels would've never happened. His actions also marked Thrawn an absolute traitor to the Chiss in Legends and he didn't really care because there was an entire galaxy to save, not just his people. That being said I like this twist overall. Adds more conflict to the character while also eliminating the need for the Yuuzhan Vong to be popping up sometime. Also explains why we don't see Thrawn in the sequel trilogy. He's back with his nation and they secretly do whatever they are doing. Actually, this would put the Ascendancy at odds with the First Order, even making it possible for Thrawn to reappear in support of the Resistance. Another interesting fact that I view as a bit of a plot hole is the Death Star. In Legends Thrawn hated the Death Star because it was an inefficient use of resources. Yet during the Yuuzhan Vong War, many people thought it'd be awesomely convenient if they could fight back the Vong with the said battle station. If you squint you might see this as Thrawn thought having twice as many ISDs is better than just having a superweapon that can down any Vong contraption in one shot but it still feels like a plothole to me. In canon Thrawn opposes the Death Star for similar reasons but with no gigantic Vong vessels known this is less of a problem. In addition, Thrawn is wary of the Empire and doesn't want them to use such a superweapon on the Chiss. Long story short is the Bad Batch, I feel Timoty Zahn is not just rewriting Thrawn because it's a new canon but sees it as an opportunity to write the Bad Batch to him anewer with ideas and thoughts he imagined up through the decades of refining this character. We'll see if Thrawn gets more live-action than he did in the Legends continuity. Now I understand why Thrawn was acting uncharacteristically cruel during the finale for Rebels. Ezra hasn't only saved the Chiss man, but also the Chiss women and Chiss children Ezra didn't remove Thrawn from the Empire. Space whales did. Long live the space whales. "Ar’alani purses her lips. Her body stance now holds some dark amusement. “Someday, Mitth’raw’nuruodo, you’ll overthink and over-plan, and it will come crashing down all around you. When that happens, I hope someone is there to lift you back to your feet.” Maybe it will be Ezra who will lift Thrawn back to his feet 😏 Thrawn plan was strategically correct, he thought that joining the Empire and gaining power within the Empire would make him powerful enough to protect his people. He developed this plan with the consideration that the Emperor was a more rational and intelligent being. He told the Emperor I will serve the Empire, protect the Empire against the threats that lurk beyond in the Unknown Regions, and at the same time I will protect my own people from these threats. But he never took into consideration that Palpatine was a madman, a powerful Sith who would use him, of course, to protect his Empire from those threats but at the same time, he probably would kill him and slave his people, when Thrawn wasn’t useful anymore to his purposes. I love Thrawn, btw, he’s the most complex, intelligent, and interesting character in all of Star Wars history. Would like to see a book on Thrawn and Ezra. Fresh out of Comes out Today wait to see what happens next and who is dying on the roll-the-chip role. First try to murder each other, then realize they are in danger from a common foe. Then by the end, it will be like a buddy cop one with Thrawn saying he is too old for this. :D Thrawn and Palpatine's relationship was doomed. Eventually, Thrawn would have to make a decision that would go against Palpatine's interest. Thrawn is a pragmatic problem solver and Sidious is a power-hungry megalomaniac Those two things cannot coexist indefinitely. Puts a whole new spin on some of those Rebels moments. The whole "many arms closing around him" had a dual meaning. And "whatever happens next, it happens to the both of us." That was both his admission of defeat and his sigh of relief. Finished treason. If Ezrahadn'tt has gotten Thrawn away, Big Blue would most likely be dead. Death by force lightning. I NEED more Thrawn content, both on this channel and at Lucasfilm! Thrawn is life...

I do like SW Resistance, but this is one of the reasons that I'm actually happy that show is ending after season 2 is over. It may free Dave Filoni up to work on a new series involving Thrawn, Ezra, Sabine & Ahsoka. We may get to see what happened to Thrawn & Ezra a lot sooner than we ever expected to now.

Resistance was an experiment, though it wasn’t a success. Filoni needs to think of something clever though because as we’ve seen from the Sequel Trilogy, Thrawn made little impact on the galaxy unlike Legends. In Legends, Thrawn completely changed how naval commanders think, he saved the Empire by creating the Empire of the Hand, his protege became the de facto leader of the Empire, and one of his top commanders created a line of new Emperors for the Empire. He has greater influence than canon. For example, the mere rumor that Thrawn was still alive caused many planets to swear loyalty to the Galactic Empire long after his death. Even the New Republic began to use his tactics. (Ackbar will never admit it, but Thrawn completely kicked Ackbar’s ass in the Battle of Bilbringi.)

Been thinking the something similar since Rebels ended. The Imperial ships stuck in Chiss Space with damaged hyper-drives and portals in the case of the Chimera. it would be hard to navigate back, once they are able to solve the issue with the Griss. Since Ezra appears to have the same birthday as Luke and Leia the Battle of Yavin is not far off by the time they do make it back they are likely to run into a search party of two determined women :)

Lothal is on the opposite end of the galaxy from Chiss space so unless the purrgil dragged the Chimaera AAAAAALLLLL the way across the center of the galaxy they won't be found by the Ascendancy.

The Chimera was likely still low enough in Lothal's atmosphere that explosive decompression wasn't that big an issue. And presumably there was some kind of emergency system to help compensate for the effects of the loss of cabin pressure.

There is one shot in the trailer where you can see a Imperial class star destroyer. This is peculiar, as it means either a flashback or the imperial remanent. Either way, Thrawn needs his development in the sequel trilogy story, because the First order is just a insane military dictatorship, not a corrupt one with a few good officers.

Almost makes you wonder if Thrawn, with his uncanny ability to predict the tactics of his foes (I mean, just look at how incredibly he play Grand Admiral Savit in Thrawn Treason), that he didn’t deduce the rebel plan, but recognized the potential of it. I mean it’s a stretch, especially given Thrawn’s warrior attitude and belief, but maybe... Maybe his in the unknown regions even now, convincing Ezra to assist the Chiss Assendancy, and training him in third sight so Ezra can navigate him back to the ascendancy.

Timothy Zahn really does a very intriguing job in showing what sort of conflicts and personal struggle Thrawn went through - something we never really got in Legends. It is one advantage of us seeing things more from his perspective. But... space whales. Still not over that, no matter that it saved his life

To me, I dont think the Emperor was ready to eliminate the Grand Admiral. But he darn sure wanted him to understand just how close he was to getting that unwanted final visit from Vader. I think Thrawns value out weighed he divided loyaties for the moment. But with that said, his failure on Lothal would have probably been the nail in his coffin.

I also think that by removing Thrawn Ezra helped the Rebellion. After the destruction of the Death Star, the Empire lost an enormous amount of brain power and leadership. That weakened it and thus benefited the Rebel Alliance. If Thrawn was around it’s possible Palpatine would’ve put him with Vader to hunt the rebels down.

I always wondered what it would've been like if Thrawn had been present during the major battles of the original trilogy, especially the Battle of Endor, because in that scenario, Palpatine made an oversight about the Ewoks that I don't think Thrawn would've. And during the Battle of Yavin, Thrawn probably wouldn't have been too arrogant to admit that the Death Star may have had a flaw. He would've analyzed the Rebel's attack pattern and the specific target they were shooting for and may have figured out what their plan was. And with Hoth, well, that was already a loss for the Rebels, but if Thrawn were there, it could've easily been just as bad, if not far worse than Atollon since on Hoth, the Rebels wouldn't have had a mystical Force creature to help them escape.
