How GOOD was Anderson Silva Actually?
Anderson Silva in his prime was a god in MMA. The Brazilian fighter became an icon in the UFC not only because he kept winning, but also because he did it in highlight fashion. His skills both on the feet and on the ground and made for some of the most memorable moments in the sport. And for a time, it seemed like no would be able to stop him. But then someone did. And after that defeat, the losses continued to pile up. So how good was Anderson Silva actually?

@@eduardowormittag2113 wow really? I know all about Anderson’s “Style” and the cocky hands down game came way later in his career. He was flashy and deadly with the stand up and also on the ground. Towards the end of his run he was showing off. Putting his back on the cage hands down daring people to hit him. That’s was far different than the style he came in with. Look at the Lieben fight both of the fights with Rich Franklin and so on. That wasn’t his “style” then. So do your tease arch before you come at somebody who has been watching MMA/UFC before it was cool to do so.

Speed and reflexes are the first things to go with age. Top athletes have maybe 5 years in their prime or less. Anderson Silva got old and people (even Silva himself) didn't seem to realize this until he was well past his prime *before* the first Weidman fight. Too few people realize this.

He kept fighting at 42 without being afraid to lose again and again. Literally anyone else would've retired at 30 and keep their "invincible" aura and keep their image. He didn't care about no imaginary image. He wanted to measure up to everyone. A real warrior. Anyone can win a couple of fights, look good, become a super star and then retire with money in their pockets.

He was a fucking UFC champion! Shows how different things are now. Truth is, as good as Anderson was, his competition for the most part is levels below today's competition, so succeeding in today's UFC where there are more true athletes attempting to make a living out of mma is far more impressive. Anderson is an all time great but even if he was young, he would struggle with the competition of today. @madgavin7568
@madgavin7568 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheDesvendador Not exactly, Chris Weidman was a very tough matchup for Anderson because Chris was strong in the areas Anderson struggled with. Chris had the wrestling pedigree to take Anderson down without too much trouble, the Jiu Jitsu skills to control on the ground and hurt him through the guard without getting caught, the striking to consistently touch Anderson on the feet, the fight IQ not to anything Chael Sonnen-esque in terms of stupidity, the chin to take Anderson's shots and the mental composure to stay patient and not get frustrated by Anderson's taunts. Chris wasn't the fastest or most flashy striker, but his striking was good enough to contend with Anderson on the feet and had enough power in his strikes to threaten him. Anderson knew how dangerous Chris Weidman was. That's why he was taunting and clowning around so much, to get Weidman frustrated and overextend on his attacks opening him up for the counter. Anderson always taunted in his fights, psychological warfare 101. Only against Weidman it backfired and resulted in the shocking KO loss. It shattered Anderson's confidence and he didn't look the same fighter again. As much as some of Anderson's biggest fans refuse to admit, Chris Weidman was the foil to Anderson Silva and had his number. In both fights Chris won the first round and was winning the fight, taking him down at will and controlling him on the ground. In the rematch even more decisively after he dropped Anderson off a clinch break and very nearly finished him in the first round. Chris Weidman's wins over Anderson Silva were not lucky flukes, he proved that in the Lyoto Machida fight if you haven't already seen it.

@GitFiddlePhilly #21 Yeah, I mean, anyone that retires during their best times will seem flawless. Just Imagine if silva had retired right after winning the rematch against Sonnen. Multiple title defenses, he would seem like a god, like he seemed back then, but today some people think he was overrated or think he was fighting bad opponents. That happens to any champ that falls naturally and it's important to evaluate how good someone is throughout their life

When I first saw the title I thought this video might attempt to downplay his legacy but I am happy to say after finishing it, that I am 100% in agreement with it. Anderson Silva will always be the GOAT in my book, he joined the UFC not long after all my friends and I had really gotten into MMA and were catching all the PPV's. We all saw his meteoric rise to the top of the food chain, and it really did seem like he would never lose a fight. I never had any beef with his slower fights, as I appreciate strategy and MMA as opposed to the drunken brawl fans that dominate the audience. He was always very respectful to good sportsman, and I believe looking back on it, that it was probably Dana's bitch ass nagging about how his wins weren't good enough that drove him into the wild no guard nonstop taunting he did in the latter part of his reign, and even during that part of his career, outside of the ring he never dishonred himself or the sport with his ego or drama the way that so many others do today. Alongside his incredible technique and talent, made him my all time favorite fighter, heck even beyond that -- my all time favorite sportsman. Seeing him snap his leg in half fighting chris as his first loss was the saddest, most heartbreaking moment that MMA has ever, or will ever, deliver unto me. I still very much enjoy MMA but these days its more about training and exercise, than watching. The whiny, fat children who organize these events, and the ones who pay to watch them so they can boo at everyone who doesn't leave the match with brain damage, have killed my interest in following the UFC and watching current events live. However, watching him pass the torch to Israel not long ago, was one of the most beautiful moments in MMA I have seen in well over a decade, very iconic.
