How GOOD was Georges St-Pierre Actually?
George's St-Pierre is a living legend in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. But to my surprise, many people don't know about his legacy, aside from winning the Middleweight Belt at UFC 217. So the question is, how good was Georges St-Pierre actually?

He didn't have a granite chin, but he didn't have a total glass jaw either. He cut relatively easily, but that got worse over time because of all of the scar tissue he had on his face. His skin doesn't look that bad at all from far away, but that's probably in large part because he had good medical care to stitch up all of the cuts and gashes he's had over the years. He definitely seemed to be naturally pretty athletic. Even in old footage of him as a teenager in Karate class, he looked shredded. If he ever did use PEDs, he was using them very moderately. That level of athleticism and muscle tone is actually quite normal for West Africans who exercise regularly, but white guys often will never look like that without PEDs. However, a lot of white/ European guys can look like that if they work out a lot. His body looked a lot like that of an olympic gymnast. He trained and practiced a LOT, and he would train at intervals and levels of intensity which was the same as the length of an MMA match. That helps to explain why he seemed so strong on the ground.

GSP fought during the steroid era. Many of the fighters back then went from terrors to puppy dogs after strict testing began. GSP's performance level never changed while fighters like Hendricks dropped off the map. GSP dominated both before and after anti-doping entered the game. I am sure many modern champions could not dominate over this transition. GSP fought total jacked to the gills beasts while arguably clean the entire time.

its still insane to me how he's known as the greatest and yet no one in the UFC tries to copy his style of training. GSP traveled to Thailand to learn from the best Muay Thai fighters, he hired high level boxing trainers to help his boxing, and he even flew in Olympic gold medal wrestlers to improve his own wrestling. This is one of the things that makes GSP the greatest of all time. It's very easy to say todays fighters would beat GSP (even though i highly disagree) and people fail to understand that todays fighters wouldn't be todays fighters without the fighters of yesterday. todays fighters are able to learn from past mistakes of other greats before them. they have video to look back on and learn from and on top of that the science (when it comes to MMA) is much better today, especially with the UFC PI. humans learn from the past and fighters like GSP are the reason why the fighters of today are as good as they are. they literally stand on the shoulders of giants.
@ARR409
@ARR409 Жыл бұрын
It’s cause he’s so humble and never let the illusion of being the best get to him. He was willing to get outwrestled by Olympic wrestlers even though he could knock them out. He was willing to get outboxed even though he knew he could take the best boxers down. GSP truly understood what it meant to be a ‘Mixed Martial Artist’ and he was willing to learn from the best in every martial art to be as complete as he could. It was just him being humble enough to learn even though he knew he was the best. He knew he still had weaknesses. The guy is also just a lifelong athlete. Even like a year ago when he was retired he went down to Puerto Rico to learn some more Jiu Jitsu. The guy is so hardworking and willing to go through the extra trouble to learn to fight. His dedication to the art of fighting and the sport was just insane. He’d take a train from Montreal to New York just to train Jiu Jitsu with John Danaher when he was starting. And he’s super intelligent. Most of his coaches and teammates say that he can learn techniques ridiculously quick so he’s at an advantage there too. Ideally the greatest Martial Artists would learn from every corner on the Earth and from every discipline to truly become the greatest Mixed Martial Artist and fighter. And for now those guys are GSP and Demetrious Johnson.

over the fight he was throwing the lead hand constantly, aiming it very well. the technique was same trigger same target, so it was functioning as a jab. I get it, the language is kinda off. if it's from the lead hand and it's being used to keep someone at distance, I see that as a lead attack, usually called a jab. A hook is better to counter with, and is thrown by back hand as much as front hand. it functioned as a jab, I think....

I respect the humble fighters, and love gsp as he is one of the all-time greats. But this is a fist fight, not some in the gym getting exercise. These are men that are in there trying to kill other guys. Personally I think that was one of the reasons gsp wasn't a finisher. He just wasn't mean enough. He was so technical and talented that he could win and coast. But to finish guys, you have to risk to be finished too, it takes a certain mentality to fight in that manner. That isn't a diss on GSP, he truly is one of the best fighters to ever grace the octagon.

One thing I honestly admire about UFC is how these athletes can actually stay safe at the level of physicality. To me, an ''unfnished'' fight, is the greatest possible outcome: 2 extremely competent competitors who managed to counter and parry each other for their own safety. When he came in for the second Hughes fight, GSP was juiced to the gills and you could clearly see it in his distended gut and developing gyno. He also trained in Mexico leading up to that fight because drug testing was not what it is today - they wouldn't make you drug test or punish you if you were out of country for the tests, whereas now they do random testing and no matter what if you miss a test you automatically fail.

GSP was not willing to step too far outside his comfort zone or take too many risks in order to seek finishes

@@kirklandau2826 I agree with you to some extent. But some people myself included learn Martial Arts so they don't have to fight unless they really have to. When you are bullied and not able to fight back fight training can give you some confidence. Some people are hardcore, vicious fighters because they enjoy giving a beating and don't mind getting hit back. Some people like GSP are reluctant to always fight but know that they have the ability to do so. Reluctant to fight doesn't mean you are scared it means you would rather use technique to control the situation instead of just brutal savagery. GSP used pure technique because I don't think he has that killer instinct natuarally. He is my favourite fighter and also the MMArtist I respect the most because he demonstrates Bushido/Tradition the most along with Lyota Machido. Respet.

@2bsure: I agree with you whole-heartedly. I much prefer to see clean and precise technique over bloodshed. I also really like to see a fighter with class and humility, and GSP had that in spades on top of having serious skill. I guess you could say that he didn't need to build pre-fight hype because he was the hype in the sense that his skills spoke for themselves. Quite honestly, one of the only competitive fighters in any combat sporting event I have ever seen that rivals my respect and admiration for GSP is Bas Rutten. Bas and GSP just both seem like really wonderful people as well as being skilled fighters, and they both have legacies worthy of all possible respect. I guess you could say I like the kind of fighters who set a good example as people as much as they do with their fighting skills.

@@2bsure I don't quite agree with the dichotomy you're making between technique and "brutal savagery"/"killer instinct". They are not mutually exclusive. They are best combined together, with the latter ideally being an instinct and brutality that is refined and under your control, able to be switched on when necessary. To be an effective martial artist, you want to hone your killer instinct and ability to be brutal. GSP btw did have more killer instinct than you give him credit for, and he could be pretty brutal actually. The way he aggressively and mercilessly mauled BJ Penn in their rematch for example. Again, I don't think GSP in general was holding back out out of some sense of pacifism, I think he stuck to a safely effective strategy to maximize his chances of winning. He didn't think that deviating from his gameplan and taking chances in order to seek a finish was worth the risk in his opinion.

sorry but GSP's resume is shit compared to henry cejudo, daniel cormier, jon jones, khabib, tony ferguson etc etc etc. GSP is beyond over rated, its funny how he didnt want to come back and fight woodley, he chose the easiest "champion" in ufc history. Then he ran like a bitch once he beat the scrub because he didnt want to defend against guys like romero, costa, jacare, whittaker etc. GSP signed a contract stating he would defend but instead faked an injury. But now he wants to fight khabib or conor???? no thank you, stay retired hes undeserving of a money fight. GSP was scared of woodley, woodley would've knocked him out stiff, he was terrified of woodley. sort of how bising was terrified of romero.

@Rolands Republic I disagree. Gsp sold more ppvs in his day than anyone just because everyone was a fan, and he just seemed unbeatable. The losses to matt sera and Hughes were obvious major blunders that could've been avoided. kinda like aj losing to ruiz the rematches with both of them he decimated.

UFC is not a street fight. It's a sports competition and it has rules. The rules say it lasts 5 rounds. He wins by decision after 5 rounds? Still a win. Why would you shit on a fighter for using those rules to his advantage? "GSP didn't finish his fights!" yeah well his opponents had 5 rounds to finish the fight too and none of them could do it.

He wasn't a knockout artist. He'd usually go the distance, out gas the other guy, and break down his opponents with consistently sharp, well placed hit. He was a perfect all around fighter. Great, accurate kicks, punches, wrestling, and submissions. Despite not being a ko artist, he was never a defensive fighter and that,"at least for me," made him very fun to watch. I think he was the best mma pound for pound fighter ever
