Astrospect role play can be used on your t tar for this hypothetical example while it uses protect. It also works with other weather based teams and since hitmontop’s ability only really matters on switch in its not like it loses anything other then the moveslot. It also can be used to copy huge power if you have a huge power user on your team or you can make hitmontop the Swift swimmer sand rusher ect so it can also add to its power as well as utility.

thats because the game is balanced around VGC. in VGC, the meta can shift after every big event. you can see that happening with Hitmontop in 2016. Not always, but i can happen.

Hitmontop was such a pain in the ass to obtain in the main series that I literally brought the Hitmontop I snagged in Colosseum all the way to X and Y and bred it with Ditto for Tyrogue for those dex entries. I will never not find it hilarious that my living dex has a Pokemon all the way from Orre in it.

So a few years back when I was doing a Nuzlocke run of Soul Silver, I had a really crushing death to Claire. I forgot about Sniper on her Kingdra and lost a Heracross I had since, like, Ecruteak, and he had been filling in an incredible niche on my team the entire time, since I really needed a Fighting type and Megahorn is Megahorn. I remember I stopped for the night, not out of emotional shock or anything, it sucked a lot but I'm better than that, but because I genuinely wanted to think up what could replace him in my team. If you can't guess, the Tyrogue in Mt. Mortar came to mind. So I went through the whole of that cave, repels up so that 'technically that Tyrogue is the first catchable Pokemon in that dungeon I encounter' to make it legal by my rules. I then went out of my way to literally EV train this thing in the middle of the run, pumping its attack and defense in equal measure every kill to absolutely guarantee I'd get Hitmontop first try, in one of the most headass moves I've ever done while playing Pokemon. And let me tell you: I was treating this boy like *glass*. He was level 5 or whatever so I was literally never letting him fight his own battles. And you know how bad the level curve is in generation 2, there's virtually no way I could've gotten him up to level ~50 or whatever with the rest of the crew. So my plan was simple: 5 size party for the Elite Four with him in back holding the experience share the entire time. Why not, it's the only way to level something in this game. Then Lance happened, and I didn't realize how fucking badly he punched a hole in my team. I'm... not afraid to admit I called for a mulligan on that fight after he bodied half my roster, because I wasn't playing to impress anybody, but more than anything suddenly I wanted the challenge of mapping out a no-casualties run of that fight, which wound up being one of the most intense numbercrunching sittings I've put myself through in any of these games. I only vaguely remember, but I think I had to open with Skarmory, correctly guess which Dragonite he was going to use to punish that, switch out to Nidoking, body that guy, switch out for Kingler before a water type move came out, *land a guilllotine* because I couldn't really get rid of the electric Dragonite otherwise, Tauros and Typhlosion were basically dead weight because they were too fragile I think, details are fuzzy but I remember it being extremely tense. And it always fell apart at the same spot. The third Dragonite was just too much of a fucking backbreaker for this team. I had no real, substantial answers by that point just from attrition, and I was almost positive I had no real plays. So after an hour of tying my spine in knots over this, I finally decide I have to make a decision. Send out the Hitmontop, because somebody absolutely needs a Full Restore or else this just isn't happening. Send the newest, youngest team member to his death. The Dragonite drops Hyper Beam. It doesn't even do ~30% of his health. This boy's dumb ass was level motherfucking *35* and he just TOOK that. He in fact takes it so well that I decide he can stay in for an extra turn and try to attack. He crits the Return and kills the thing from full HP. Winning the battle. And that's how I learned Hitmontop has 110 base special defense. Remember when I said, 'I wasn't trying to impress anybody'? Travis the goddamn Hitmontop had his own agenda and I've never been prouder.

Raise Ya Voice hyper beam became special after they made the special split based on moves themselves rather than type. So in gen 2 it was physical but soul silver is a remake in gen 4 so it would be special

All Hitmons actually have a Base Special Defense of 110 and while Tyrogue evolves into Hitmonchan with higher defense than attack, its defense stat wasnt that high and is quite slow, making Hitmonlee more powerful offensively while Hitmontop takes the defensive role despite its attack stat 10 points lower than Hitmonchan (well since its defensive teams it doesn't matter much) but Hitmontop has a higher defense stat and has intimidate to lower the attack stat even further while still not frail on the special defense side (again, all 3 of them has 110 Base Spcl. Def) and ironically despite Hitmontop being Attack = Defense and Hitmonchan being Attack < Defense. Hitmontop is used more on defense, making Hitmonchan the "middle" mon, not too offensive like Lee but not too defensive like Top. Poor Hitmonchan

I couldn't have got a better birthday video that this one. Hitmontop is one of my biggest favourites, and now I finally can use one in Omega Ruby (it single handedy swept down 95% of Norman's Gym while being level 21-25 using Rock Smash and Fake out)

Hitmonlee is definitely the best of the Hitmon's in singles with its high Attack. Hitmontop is the best in doubles. He's a fucking staple in VGC. Hitmonchan......exists.

I see hitmontop also has some great names for its competitive partnerships. I love this guy! Used it in colosseum where it’s kind of a mini boss and it was super fun to watch it rock around and spin during attacks. Used hitmonlee in blue and now I’m planning to use Chan in soulsilver so I can have the whole trio

I hate that Hitmontop's idle animation in XY> isn't him balancing himself upside down on his head. That's what made him stick out to me in the older games. That no matter what during the battle, he keeps himself balanced on his head at all times until he faints.

Hitmontop only "balances" when it's spinning. It doesn't perpetually live upside-down. Besides, it's using the capoeira fighting stance which is "ginga movement". And the point of ginga movement is to always keep your body moving and busy to maintain momentum for you spinning attacks (which Hitmontop still does for attack animations). Unless the 3D model was gonna stay spinning forever, then staying upside-down isn't actually accurate to Hitmontop's lore.

With 'top being the most reliable defensively, providing the most utility, making it look more attractive in battles (well, my experience is non-existent but in theory at least, he fits in many of my teams xD). Hitmontop had some tiering antics in late gen 8. It is garbage in NU but a bunch of high level players were using it for fun and winning. This led to it being in the NU tier and nearly rising to RU before there was an unrelated change in tiering rules that meant it couldn’t rise anymore. It was super fun to see!

To make Hitmontop even better, all you have to is make Triple Kick not garbage. I propose that instead of the base power being 10,20 then 30, it should be 10, 30, 60. Giving it a maximum power of 100 or 150 with Technician. I mean if Flying Press is aloud to be 100 base power, I think Triple Kick should too. Though, if you want some real Power creep, make it 20, 40, 60. Giving it a maximum power of 120 or 180 with Technician. >:]
