Then they stopped being counterparts in Gen 4 when Mantine got a pre-evolution in Mantyke. Then to further drive the point home, they gave Mantine a HP buff in Gen 7 so Mantine and Skarmory's stats don't even mirror each other anymore.

This video really shows that one or two move additions or buffs can make a single Pokémon viable. It is nice to see that Mantine didn’t become untiered. Even if it only was OU for a short time, it was still OU in Gen 7 and Gen 8 and still stayed around UU/RU/NU. Impressive

I actually don’t think Ice-Types have improved that much compared to the previous generation. Chien-Pao is only one Pokémon, and the trade-off from Hail to Snow allows the non-Ice-Types an extra 6.25% HP per turn no longer being lost. It’s something, I guess, but this isn’t nearly enough for me to call Ice a viable type again, especially in formats where Terastalizing is allowed and Pokémon can change to one of Ice’s four resists at a moment’s notice.

B Rank in GSC PU, C rank in ADV UU, A rank in DPP PU, B+ in BW PU, A- in ORAS NU, C+ in SM RU, and A rank in DLC2 SS NU. A pretty big journey for a sometimes forgettable gen 2 Pokémon! Mantine has been earning the tools throughout generations with Water Absorb, Roost, Scald, Defog, a stat buff, Hurricane, and Heavy-Duty Boots. All these tools have come together to make Mantine survive the crashing waves of power and tiering creep compared to other bulky Waters from Gen 2, like Politoed, Qwilfish, and Lanturn. Water Absorb, a strong unique typing, and great utility have made Mantine worthy of higher tier niches too! Mantine definitely gets some points for its offerings throughout all of Sword and Shield. Scarlet and Violet will miss this big ray.

I've watched so many of these videos that at this point, I've pictured the whole tiering system to a gargantuan tower. (Strap in, it's gonna be long!) This tower houses almost every single Pokémon in existence, and each floor of it has a gymnasium that gets more and more state-of-the-art the higher the floor is from the ground. Each of these floors represents a tier in the Pokémon metagame, from the elaborate and awe-inspiring OU at the top, to the shabby NU on the ground floor. (PU is the recently-installed basement, and most avoid looking at it.) In the tower as a whole, the Pokémon compete with each other to be the best. Depending on how a Pokémon performs in a tier's battlefield, they can get moved either up or down a floor. Pokémon who are too strong for a certain floor yet too weak for the one above are confined to that floor, but are barred from participating--Borderline. If a Pokémon is too weak for even PU, they get kicked out of the tower entirely, becoming "Untiered". But if a Pokémon is too strong for OU, they get invited to a grand, ethereal battlefield floating above the clouds--This is the Heavenly Arena and where the Ubers reside. And in the insane event where a Pokémon dominates even the gods themselves, they get banished to another dimension where nothing exists except a howling of both winds and a canine creature, as well as the apocalyptically powerful presences behind them... Anything Goes.

I like to imagine the tiers as these little clubhouses. The lower tiers (NU-UU) aren’t much but they’re humble, and they can afford Pizza on Fridays! PU is a bit run down but it still has a nice community of Pokémon in there. OU is a lot more pristine, they have a foosball table and everything! Ubers is the most lavish of lavish, with their hired Indeedees doing their work and maintenance around the place. Anything Goes is Uber’s backyard where they kick out everyone who they didn’t like. Some Pokémon from the lower clubs can play in the higher ones if a friend invites them, just ask Ariados.

@joshuamercer7572 Жыл бұрын
Turns out, said Swampy Smiley Boi is illiterate, and hasn’t been able to tell PU from OU. He only recognizes the letter U and assumes that means he belongs there. (He also thought the G in Anything Goes was a particularly weird looking U.) He’s also entirely correct every time, and everyone loves him too much to kick him out.

I didn't realize that the item Metronome gets its power boost reset if the opponent uses a move like Protect. You learn something new every day.

It was briefly touched upon, but I was such a huge fan of Mantine in gen 7 UU. Nidos and Gengar pretty much never ran thunderbolt so Mantine was one of the few natural checks balance could employ vs them. When Feraligatr screens was a popular playstyle, it was quite solid in that meta as well as a decent hazing bulky water. 4MSS was an unfortunate truth of Mantine in that tier though, having to pick between haze and toxic or finding another defogger was a pain.

Glad to know that Mantine adapt, I was always so worried about Mantine for some reason when comes to Gen 2 pokemon (mainly cause it being a water type weak to Rock), I used Mankyte in Pearl version btw

Eviolite Mantike in VGC Gen 7 was actually soooo good !!! With -Haze -Helping hand -Icy Wind/Tailwind -Wide Guard Was so good countering Geomancy Xern, Primal Kyogre and Groudon ! It was also a good teammate for Kyogre and Xern cores ! Really a OP support with speed control, helping hand and really good special bulk ! And Blocking all the double target moves with wide guard

Giving it Volt Absorb and Sap Sipper on top of the Water Absorb ability it has would probably do it wonders. Water veil is nice and if a pokemon could have four abilities I would keep it but I think being immune to three extra types is a better deal for the ray.

I am glad you brought up the Remoraid attached to Mantine. I believe it is time to change Mantine's ability. I imagine Mantine getting an ability similar to Parental Bond. Mantine will make a second attack at half power when he uses a water type move. This will allow Mantine to easily spread confusion with Water Pulse and burns with Scald. This ability can be called Companion Bond.

It sure is surprising that it actually became viable after such a rough start, the kind that makes you wish Mantyke actually had exclusive egg moves Mantine didn't, especially useful ones. With the incenses no longer being needed for those used to only being attainable that way, it makes breeding easier. Maybe giving some benefits to them like XY's 3+ perfect IVs for Undiscovered egg groups including Baby Pokemon can help with making genuinely viable team members even when in such forms (in LC, even)

"Manteen"? - That can't be right... What is right, is seein' Mantine survive and thrive in many different tiers, even if some stints were all too brief, it's pretty dang heartwarming to see Mantine grow and excel when given a little boost here and there.

Despite Skarmory not getting a +20 HP buff and pre-evo, it did better competitively than its counterpart. Plus Mantine isn’t very strong so it doesn’t always do the walling very well. But did have Scald, Roost, Haze, good resistances, 20 more base HP and Defog.

I built a team around Mantine in the last VGC format of Sword and Shield and it was actually amazing as a Dynamax and tailwind setter next to Kyogre, just wish I'd had the idea sooner so I could've competed with it.

Personal pet peeve: I hate that they removed the Remoraid from it's design. It was a nice touch and different. Nowadays comparable to Dragapult. Also, I've just been itching to use Mantine out on a team. I don't know why, I just want to try it out. Was very bummed that it isn't in S/V (words no human should have to say...)

Hiya. Been Requesting this one for literal years now. Before the patreon picks started. My love of Mantine has finally gotten mild spotlight. But One thing i should note. I have been using Mantine in OU for about as long as I have played in Simulators. And one thing to note, It does have another set. While Niche, and seemingly not at all what most consider "Great" of complete passive wall/trapper, with Whirlpool, Toxic, Sub, Aqua Ring and Lefties. many things generally end up getting surprised by this combo, And while not the most common set in the world. Has been a thing since gen 4. Would have loved to see it be brought up but alas. Niche on a Niche pokemon means a Niche of a Niche within an already Niche thing. It does have genuine viability.
