Yes, I've never cooked much with beans as my mother never cooked them for us as children because she doesn't like them, I do though and since watching Jamerrill I have been using them in meals and it's great.

When I am trying to stick to a budget, I buy extra carrots, onion, celery and bell peppers. I chop finely and add to meals where the extra flavor isn't super noticeable but adds bulk. Sloppy joes and tacos are so strongly flavored that my family isn't annoyed by my adding in an extra lb or two of veggies. Even zucchini or yellow squash grated finely is a good add in, especially when your family isn't super into beans. Your plan is a great jumping off point for families. Even if you don't follow exactly, you can tailor these recipes to fit your family's needs.

I do similar but with Zucchini. I don't remember to soak the lentils but when I remember, they help stretch ground meat meals. For starches i bulk out with potatoes or rice.

The day old french loaves and Italian too make tasty and inexpensive french bread pizzas. I use leftover and last bits of veggies, sauces and cheeses. Partially cook and then freeze for quick lunches. Makes 6 or so per loaf. Less than 50 cents a meal.

My Mother was able to shop on military base but dad still at one time only made under $200.00 for family of 5. Talk about a woman who could stretch a meal but also so well seasoned. At the time I didn't like dried beans but as I became a wife and mother so glad that I was able to learn how she cooked. Dried beans go further than canned and so many different kinds, cornbread, homemade biscuits were also served often, momma was a great cook and is greatly missed.

Yeah there is a few ways to make this even cheaper than the video shows. Dried beans or lentils are cheaper than the canned version. Buying blocks of cheese instead of pre-shredded, if you have time and energy - making your own breads from flour can be beneficial too. Hell, even possible to make your own pasta - but that's pretty tedious. That being said, I would also recommend getting bone in chicken if you want to do stock or broth for further use. Just using meat isn't going to give it enough depth or nutrition - but I understand the convience of this video too.

Our kroger consistently has block cheese on sale for $1.59 to $2 for 8 oz and even cheaper per ounce in the 32 oz block. Whenever it is on sale I buy several and freeze. Takes a day to unthaw. Grate yourself and eliminate the anti-caking chemicals. If it’s going into casseroles, can always just cut into chunks. /Another way to stretch the soups is by adding some mashed potato flakes. It makes the soup thicker and adds some texture. Thanks Jamerill for doing this! Great video!! 🌷❤️🌷❤️🌷

I came across another channel that has 12 kids plus the two parents and the mother does the shopping once a week and often spends up to and over $1000 for groceries (and that does not include any mid-week stock-up). Coming from that, it's nice to see that it's still possible for large families to have good but also cheap meals.

I think I know what family you mean. She has the means and a lot of special needs kids. You for sure can still feed a family from scratch for cheaper if you buy whole food and not tons of processed and snacks/drinks. They tend to buy whatever they want instead of planning by sales or cheapest ingredients. Our Tribe of Many and Jammerill are my favorites bc they are good stewards. 💕

Her channel is a great example of everyone's situation being different. We're a family of 9, and I spend $500 a month on food/household supplies (like laundry soap and TP)/toiletries (shampoo, toothpaste, etc.). I can't even fathom paying $1000+ every week. While I do have some family members with special dietary needs, I don't have kids who have severe issues with food from being in bad situations like many of her adopted kids do. We're all working with the hand we're dealt, and as long as our kids are loved and cared for, it's all good.
@hillaryellis5007

I think I know the channel you're talking about too. She does spend a lot but from what I gather she adopted a lot of her children and they do have a lot of special needs revolving around food and she uses that as a way to love and bond with them. I remember reading that feeding a child builds a strong bond. Makes me think of mothers nursing or even bottle feeding their babies. I imagine several of the children she has adopted had food insecurity issues and even though she does spend a lot, I'm glad she has a means to do what she does for her children and I always think about how much security she must be building for them. However I love channels like this where someone takes the time to show us how we can stretch our food dollars and still feed our family well. This probably resonates with the majority of us.

My Mom says that her Grandmother always used to say "Company is coming! Add more water to the soup!" When I had to shop as cheap as possible for the week- I would think One Mexican Meal, One Oriental, One Italian, Something for BBQ and wing the rest. Then I would go to the meats section and (with menu in mind) pick out the cheapest or on sale meats for each. which often dictated the rest of the weeks meals. Then I would buy the cheapest ingredients to complete each meal. So basically the sale items created my menu. I love that you created this video in these tough times! People can use all the help they can get! Oh btw I still meal plan that way- only now I'm not nearly as restricted. Peace.💐

Leftover money probably would go for bread milk eggs produce and such to round out extra fill in’s…. 11 ppl is a lot of meals per person to feed for 7 days ..11x7 =77 so this is basically only supper that may have leftovers for lunches ….not the breakfast lunch and dinner for 11 ppl but still so amazing to have these well rounded nutritious wonderful dinners that eleven ppl can eat for a whole week with possible leftovers especially on today’s prices! Job well done Jamerrill ! You are so kind to give us all the information needed to buy and make these delicious meals and for families that are smaller than yours will probably have double the dinners that they can put into the freezer for meals on a later date and you can’t beat that! I also don’t rinse beans etc I always dump all of the can straight into whatever I’m cooking as just extra liquid. Jamerrill knows a lot about stretching food when cooking for 11 ppl everyday.. Thanks go to Jamerrill for giving us so many great tips and delicious recipes! Blessings!💕

Jamerill I'm impressed. I work at Sam's so when I buy things it's usually 80 for eight things or so. Even though I'm only one person I've learned to buy certain things bulk and I do save. But those 2 bags of groceries for 80 always kills me. I love your videos. If I had a large family I would definitely do this. I'm always impressed by your skills when it come to managing large family meals. I can remember as a kid my mom and my grandma who lived through the depression cooked meatless meals maybe once a week. Pancakes for dinner or homemade potato pancakes for dinner. We did soup for dinner too. When I had these meals during the 70's while growing up it really wasn't a hardship for us I remember it as a bonding experience. Oh my gosh such different times. Thanks Jamerill.

Cut up all of your veggies (onion, bell peppers, chopped tomatoes, garlic) and simmer it in olive oil for 20-30 minutes with a pinch of salt. It is called a ‘sofrito’. Pressure cook your beans while it simmers which is cheaper (small red beans is most authentic) drain the majority of the extra liquid from the beans, and pour the sofrito over the cooked beans. Add a tsp or two of brown sugar. And some better than bouillon paste or a bouillon cube (although that has msg so be aware). Simmer it a little longer and it’a ready to go! Seriously the BEST, especially if you use freshly cooked beans. Eat it with rice. You won’t feel like you are deprived and on a budget.

Cozette O' Connor You're being redundant by saying "Eat it with rice" after mentioning your husband's Colombian recipe. 😄 As a child of Colombian parents, we grew up eating rice at practically every meal! Rice is STILL my downfall.

LOVED this video. Would really like to see more in this series of easy, frugal meals where you go in with a set dollar amount, shop with us, then come home and make the meals with us. All of the recipes used inexpensive ingredients, most of many of us would have at home already to do this meal plan.

Another tip, take that celery, potato eyes and GREEN onions, throw it in some dirt, water once a day and in a few weeks you will have another bunch of celery and green onions. Potatoes take longer but produce a ton. Last year I threw one eye that couldn't be eaten anyway and it produced 3 5 gallon buckets worth. Also, dried beans tends to be cheaper than the canned.

That’s a good idea for the veggies. I have 5 kids and each of them is extremely picky. If they spot a veggie, they will push it to the side and won’t eat it. If veggies are shredded, maybe, just maybe, they won’t notice them. 🤔

I appreciate the fact that you shopped at Walmart! Not everyone has an Aldi or outlet supermarkets for that matter, including myself. I used to shop exclusively at Aldi when my family and I lived in TX, but no such thing exists way out here in Northern CA where we have lived for the last 4 years, at least to my knowledge. I have been shopping at Sam’s Club and Walmart, but it’s still so expensive for a family of 5! I truly appreciate this video and you!!

I find jarred (natural) applesauce more affordable than apples per serving. When I can't get any more applesauce out of the jar, I save it until I make oatmeal. Then I add the water amount for the oatmeal, swish it around, and use it to cook the oatmeal. Sometimes I add cinnamon.

I am so grateful you shared this! My daughter has a family of 5, she has taken in a friend that can't live alone but is still healthy enough that she doesn't need a nursing home, she has allowed me (her mother) to stay with her while I have knee surgery and now her cousin got evicted with her family of 4 to move in temporarily. So in a 4 bedroom home she has 11 people living g here ...wow! I didn't realize how many were here until I added us all up...lol so anyway this will be a great help to her! Thank you!

I asked another KZbinr how her method would work if I have NOTHING to start with at home and no room in budget to buy extra every grocery trip to build up my pantry/freezer. Like she did during the video, choose to not purchase an optional ingredient like the chicken broth ($1.99) or switch pasta to store brand fettuccineinstead of brand name spaghetti ($0.92 x 3 instead of $1.58 × 3) and use that almost $4 to buy a slightly larger container of a pantry staple or extra boxes of pasta. Building a pantry on a tight budget can be done with these small incremental decisions and strategies.
