Theres a famous theory that explains how Scar got his scar, that has been going on for a while now. See, his name was Taka ( which means dirt btw ) and he messed with a buffalo on purpose so that the buffalo would chase Mufasa and kill him but the buffalo got Taka in the eye instead with its horns. So then he was named Scar. This theory seems a bit darker and more ''cinematic'' we could say but I like the theory with the cobra too.

This song, in addition to revealing the origins of Scar's scar, also further characterized Mufasa: it makes us understand that when he was young, Mufasa was not a particularly serious guy, he looked down on his brother and made fun of him (even if, by appointing him leader of the Lion Guard, he still did something good for him, giving him the value that their parents never gave him), only as he grew up he changed his mind becoming wiser and kinder (while still being so naive that he did not understand that his brother wanted him dead and that he had to watch out for him). All this made him an even more three-dimensional character and made me appreciate him even more.

If you listen the story is quite biblical. God gives people the right to rule without earning it sometimes. Since what he says is so. Then you have beings that work hard every day, and sometimes get hurt. Many times they don’t get the recognition and reward they feel they deserved. This causes them to question their authorities. Satan, Lucifer, and the other Fallen leaders developed mixed feelings. When God made man in his image, and had them bow. We humans didn’t work to earn the praise/respect. So they tried to usurp God with their given might, and lost. They rally other spirits who are filled with resentment through life to perpetuate the conflict. For they feel those unworthy of what they have should not have anything. Hatred was birthed for this very reason. Favoritism. We see this with Cain and Abel. In Lion King Taka had a special power from the “Heavens”, but it’s used to protect the sovereign of their land. He began to question how things worked, and while on duty got hurt. Despite thinking he should rule Taka did the right thing, but he didn’t get the recognition he felt he deserved. The Serpent’s venom (Hatred) took over, and he wanted to exact revenge. The “Heavens” took the spiritual gift knowing he sought to abuse it, but then he killed his own brother anyway. To take over the land he felt he deserved. Karmic Justice worked in a way so that even though Taka took over Mufasa’s son took the throne. Taka died. Taka’s spirit is of Hell Fire. Hatred. It’s undying. So it seeks vengeance on Mufasa’s entire bloodline. The last lyrics sounds like “That’s why I’m still scarred! For when I led their God (As a chosen Leader)! Oh-oh-oh! That’s why I am Scar (Permanently Hurt), and why i’ll destroy their God!” God is unconditional love! The Devil were born from unconditional hatred which came from witnessing favoritism from something that is supposed to be unconditional!

I still prefer the fandom origins of his Scar rather than this soft stuff. Favorite had to be the one where Ahadi gave Taka that Scar and that’s how he got his name. A bitter reminder of the fragility of family bonds which is why he doesn’t have much of a problem in killing his own brother and nephew. Felt far more poetic I think.

I saw some comments about how Scar cured the venom from the snake. I don’t think he did at all. In the original movie, he’s shown as very frail and thin, compared to his much healthier looking brother. In this song he looks healthier as well before the snake bite him. Since he was the fiercest of the lion guard, he may have been strong enough to not die from the venom, but it may have turned him weak and fragile. It might also explain his evilness as before this, he didn’t seem to hate his brother all that much. The venom may have tainted his mind as well and since it was never cured it corrupted his mind for years until the events of Lion king 1 where he was at his evilest.
