1. Eat 3 meals a day. 2. Eat home cooked, real food. No diet or processed foods. 3. When you eat, eat with intention. 4. Be more mindful. Connect with your gut and mind, not what you’re “supposed” to be eating. 5. Being very active during the day- walking, hiking, always on the move.

I went to Costa Rica for 4 days and come home two pounds lighter. I eat fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood and enjoyed the nature, swimming and walking in the parks. I was relaxed and I laughed a lot ! To this day I believe that is the way life should be lived , and I am committed to change it for the better!

I always lose weight when I'm on vacation! For me I think it's the lack of stress & being more active. I'm not worried about my next deadline or having to do daily chores or run errands quickly etc. And there's usually lots of walking involved.

Yes. I grew up in Mexico and used to be at a reasonable weight for my height while living there because we used to eat home made food 99% of the time and it was whole foods not processed. Once I moved to the US, I gained 50 lb. But recently lost 35 lb thanks to you and a lot of other people who teach us to eat healthy and stay on track with enjoying healthy and whole foods. Thanks you for all the work you do. Please keep helping us :)

May I ask what caused you to transition from whole foods to ultraprocessed? Was it that real food in the United States is more expensive? Did you change your cooking practices? I’m always curious about the differences between the US and other countries as I feel like our grocery stores are primarily junk with a little food in them. I do eat nearly a completely whole foods diet.

we all have people who resonate with us and you are one of those people for me. Your messages are on POINT. Your story brought back when I went off to school and lived on campus. I lost a lot of weight. We had three meals a day and my snacking was cut to a minimal ( not daily like before school). I would go to the gym and play basketball two to three times a week. This was happy times in my life and everything was coming together for me. I need to mimic this. Thanks

Dani, this video reminded me of a similar experience I had when I visited Germany 20 years ago. I was so sure that I would gain weight while there, but I was wrong (thank goodness!). We were walking everywhere, going to sleep when we were tired, sleeping until we woke up (without an alarm), and ate when we were hungry (full-fat - nothing "low fat" or "sugar-free" or processed), and we visited while eating - lingering at the table long after the food was gone. I lost 6 or 7 lbs in four weeks. It was a brilliant way to live. Thanks for that great reminder.

It's no secret that American food is very unhealthy food. Everything is fried and super sized. Soda is like drinking water, drive thur instead of getting out of the car and walking. Yes, I understand completely. I live in Spain and the customs are very similar to Italy. We eat whole foods and use olive oil, eat fish and lots of vegetables. The meals are almost always slow and enjoyable. We don't eat lunch at work, we go home for our midday meal and cook it. At dinner we cook again. I'm glad you enjoyed it so much!

First, I just discovered your channel and I'm loving it. Second, I can totally identify with your trip to Italy. Several years ago I went on a Mediterranean, 10 day cruise and prior to going, everyone that had been on a cruise said I was going to gain weight because of all the unlimited supply of food that is available. I was already struggling with my weight, but, I went with the attitude that I was going to eat whatever I wanted, because that's what people do on a cruise! Long story short, I found myself wanting the healthier foods and not wanting the heavier carb foods that I normally would crave. We were walking & exploring constantly on our shore excursions, even the trip from my room to the dining room was a very long walk. I didn't even realize what was happening, but, when I got home, everyone was asking me if I had lost weight. I was ecstatic! Your video has just explained to me why I lost weight (on a cruise) and why everything I've done since then, has been such a battle! Thank you so much!

To be honest, all of this does make sense to me now that I am 'dieting'. I am so focused on hitting my macros and going to the gym 6x times per week that I forget to listen to my body. For a long time my body didn't drop a single pound, but since I took a day off from the gym and ate a little more than I should I actually LOST weight as well! I think it's because like you said, your body is able to let go of a lot of stress and that stress is so underrated by many people that it causes them to hold on to, or even GAIN weight instead. Thank you for making a video about this, because it is sooo important for people to know that sometimes 'dieting' can backfire. xx

+Naomi Reiziger yes - diets only work well when we use them as a guide to help us better listen to and connect with our bodies - when we make the diets more import then how out bodies feel, we begin to walk a slippery slope.

I've actually been seeing a therapist and she said the 'key' lies in not battling against what we don't want, but accepting it. If we accept our biggest fears we let go of them without even realising and feel so much more free. Fighting fear if FUELING our fears. I'm so sorry to hear that you've had to struggle for 30 years and still are, but really, there is a way to break the circle. It just takes a lot of time. Every day might not be good, but there is something good in every day. :)

Trust me going to the gym 6 times does help. It is true it does not make you lose weight if you are not eating properly, but it keeps your body in check and your mental health better. But we should not make it a duty, it should be part of our life. I mean it does not have to be 6 days at the gym, you can walk with your friend in your town on day 6 instead of the gym

Everything you said resonates with me. If you listen to most of the functional medicine doctors and alternative nutritionists nowadays, they'll tell you that all these factors are the secrets to weight loss. Eat real food, more healthy fats, relax, be mindful, keep yourself moving and enjoy your surroundings and be grateful. Thanks for contributing to a healthful lifestyle on youtube. Unfortunately many of the more popular channels are promoting high sugar, high carb, bad fat foods, that we need to steer away from.

I'm currently living in Paris and whilst I haven't lost any weight (hello cheese, wine and baguettes!) I haven't gained any either and I genuinely believe it's to do with the pace of life. Even for a city Paris is relaxed when it comes to food with businesses closing for the hour. I was in a cafe sharing a plate of cheese and cold cuts with a friend and the staff never once rushed us or anyone else, it's so much more about enjoying the food than spending the money! Also, I'm working in a school and lunch is a 3 course, fresh meal that EVERYONE eats. For €2.65 everyone has a yoghurt or piece of cheese, a piece of fruit, salad bar, bread and main meal which is normally a meat or fish with veggies or pasta/rice; everyone drinks water. As a result people eat a small dinner, and I think that definitely helps too!

I moved to the US when I was in high school and immediately gained 10lbs in 3 months (I was a petite 100lbs 5'2" so 10lbs is a lot to me). I didn't know what I did differently that caused the weight gain. I used to eat BOWLS of rice for meals back then and I didn't even gain as much weight as when I moved to the US. But I soon realized it was because the US was full of processed, pre made, sodium-loaded food, compared to my everything-is-homecooked diet back in my home country. Also, when I was in another country, I was allowed at least an hour for lunch time so I had time to eat slowly, chat with friends, etc. whereas I was shocked to see I only had 30 minutes to finish my lunch in a US high school. Heck that wasn't even enough time for anything! I didn't have time to enjoy my food, and I didn't have time to register to my brain that I just had enough food. So I kept eating and eating and eating...

We eat at the table to spend some time we the family, our grandmother and mum all cook togheder from scratch, they make pasta, cakes, fish as so on... Fast food are seeing as something really not healthy and gross! Why should u eat a burger at some "American chain" when I can eat a fresh and healthy meal cooked with love from ur nonna? I am always curious as to how people gain weight on vacations, lol. Even on more relaxed ones I do a lot of exploring, side trips, walking galore and always end up losing weight even if I eat a few less healthy local specialities. Perhaps people think that resting is about being less active but it need not be so. Doing things that are different from our daily prosaic existence often energizes the body and mind. And of course there's no time to obsess over food, like you said one simply enjoys it at the right time.

Several years ago I went to Chicago and when I returned back home, I found out I lost 10 pounds. I was eating a granola bar and Subway sandwiches for the whole week I was there because there weren't any good restaurants around in the area of the hotel I was in, plus I was low on funds, so I was only able to order food in on the last day I was there. I call that diet my Subway diet. Thanks for the video! It brought back some memories!

I feel so relaxed during my vacations I wake up at around 9am and sleep 11pm ( i always feel energized) I eat 3 meals a day and I even eat white bread (lol) BUT I LOSE WEIGHT! Something else I notice is my bowl movements in those countries tend to be regular and I always feel good. But here I'm always constipated and I feel bloated!

My friend and I went to New York in 2012. We ate from the street food trucks whenever we got hungry. We had so much fun. I lost 3 pounds when I got home. I tried to eat the way we did in New York and ended up putting on weight. I realized it was all of that walking we did that burn off what we ate plus. The walking did it. I’ve since badly injured my foot and can not walk like that anymore. Hopefully I will again. In the meantime I’m looking for a better and healthier way of losing weight without having to put out so much physical energy. I just left the Keto diet, I lost weight, but I’m starting to experience dizziness, breathlessness and heart palpitations. I came to your channel looking for something new...and or better. Dani-thank you! I appreciate your video! I'm frustrated. I need to do more of mindful and appreciating good food. I'm single. I'd like to see more video's on appreciating food and enjoying it, rather than so much of "to do's, and what to eat." I don't have others around me that care to eat healthy, or even know about it. It's a battle to mention that I don't want to eat the SAD. I have to just focus on myself. I can't be others' "instructors" or provide information that just entertains them. Getting nutritional education takes work and effort, not a simple passing comment or two, to appease others. So I love hearing and seeing your video! I need more of this, to take care of myself. This is probably the biggest thing I'm damaging my health with, and I want to improve to have a happy healthy lifestyle and a good gut!!!

I wholeheartedly understand what you mean Dani. Our family were stationed in Germany for nearly 6 years and learned to enjoy the European way of living. Meaning, we enjoyed eating out on the patios & didn't rush the eating process. Also, I swear that I ate much more fruits and vegetables over there too. Their fruits and vegetables tasted much better than here in the US. Yup, that's the truth and our entire family recognized it too. Also, we definitely were much more active because we walked everywhere and didn't depend on our vehicles as much. Thanks always for your helpful posts and sharing your passion. :-)

It’s astonishing how few calories are burned during a sedentary day. I’m a petite woman of 120 pounds. When I’m just doing paperwork / desk work and not exercising during the day my calories burned are like 1,500. It’s honestly not that much more when I add an exercise because sometimes it’s resistance training which burns very little. But if I’m walking around, busy doing this and that, walking in the evening around the neighborhood, cleaning, etc., it’s consistently over 2,000 calories a day.

I worked at Disney for a semester and lost all the weight I gained in high school to my goal weight of 125. I didn't have a car so I walked everywhere and worked on my feet and lifted strollers and went to the parks all the time and had to talk to get groceries even though I ate like crap while I was there because it was my first time on my own and didn't have access to a good grocery store. Gained weight back because of surgeries and other situations and sometimes I want to go back to work there just to loose weight!

Hey, Dani! First, I love your channel! Thank you for posting this! I can definitely relate. I am 24, I eat fairly heathy and I exercise 3-4x per week. Both times I was out of the country (6 months in Ecuador and 3 weeks in Spain & Italy) I have experienced a similar weight loss situation. Both times I lost 10 lbs and honestly to expected to gain more because I was eating more. Like you, I wasn't snacking, but eating big meals throughout the day. I'm not sure where you were in Italy, but in Rome the food was very touristy. I found myself eating only pizza and pasta, and it wasn't very good! I was disappointed and definitely expected to gain weight when I came back, but to my surprise, I dropped 10lbs. I attribute that to all of the walking I do when I'm abroad. It seems like the only breaks I took were to eat! Whereas when I'm at home, I sit all day at my job and eat snacks the ought the day. Each time I come home, I end up putting on the 10lbs I lost within a week! Such a bummer!

When I was 24 years, I weighed 67kg and I dropped my weight to 57 kg! I ate everything I wanted, no dieting but I was moving and working a lot. I even remembered eating a tin of Belgium biscuits in 3 days but no weight gain! I went to Uni and worked 3days a week and exercised 3 times a week. Now I'm 44 years, , my metabolism isn't the same. 1 year ago I became Vegan/ vegetarian, tried to eat whole food and exercise 5-6times a week. I cared more about my health and what I ate. I put on a lot weight when I was 43, a year later I only dropped my weight to 63 kg. As u r older, yr metabolism isn't the same as when u were in your 20s. It's much harder to lose weight. I don't even eat Belgium biscuits no more 😩

I agree with you about being able to lose weight when you are eating 3 times a day and being active in between. I went to a convention in California for 4 days and lost 5 pounds. Every thing was on a schedule. We walked over to breakfast and had time to eat and talk. Then we walked to a class or demonstration then back to lunch, back to a class or activity, then walk back to dinner. I drank water in between and barely snacked. They rented out Disneyland for us and we walked all over the place and rode the rides. When I got home people noticed that I looked relaxed and smaller. I got on the scale and had lost 5 pounds! I always think of that time and how I lost that weight. I want to simulate it, but my work schedule is totally different. I wonder how I could do it now. ??? Thanks for the video!

I recently came back from Vegas last week. I was so engulfed in the tourism of a place I had never been and all the exciting stuff I hardly ate. I wasn't starving myself of course I just didn't feel that hungry and was more focused on having fun and soaking up the sun in a place I had never been. However, I still ate a few pastries. Didn't really eat healthy except maybe one salad. Ended up feeling much lighter and less bloated when I got back home. I guess the moral is "eat to live, don't live to eat."

That was me on FB wondering about Italy.... this video shifted my mentalities about relaxing while eating. I too, have small kids (three) and it's hard to relax while eating. And with a newborn it's impossible to eat anything but something fast & convenient. Everything you said in this video makes sense why I gain weight AFTER my pregnancies.... never during. Pregnancy chills me out, and of course having a newborn makes me wirey. Thanks Dani! Maybe now I can go to Italy :D

I went to Florence Italy last October and experience the exact same thing. I lost 10 lbs and was actually fearful that I had to have gained weight there. Like you said the meals were fresh, not processed and we walked everywhere.

I tend to lose weight on holiday and I think it’s for the very reasons you state. I’m relaxed, eat when my body needs to rather than when my schedule dictates, also being in a hotter climate (I’m in the Uk) I drink more water. Being on holiday helps you connect and be more mindful, definitely.

Yes, happens to me every time I go to Europe. I usually go to Spain and they are sticklers for set meal times. They have a strict 5 times a day. I even ate more sweets than normal, but I think the biggest difference is the activity level. I'm always driving in America, but there I have to use my feet! Lol I don't even need to go to the gym unless I want to! :) moving to Madrid in a few weeks and excited!

when i was 12 i went to a performing arts camp for flute and again when i was 15. and both times i went i lost close to 10 pounds in 11 days. 1. we literally walked everywhere. we were in a forest. 2. i was in nature and not in a house watching tv all day or on the computer. 3. i was physically and mentally engaged in what i was doing at all time. i was essentially alone and didnt know anyone. just like everyone else that was there. 4. i was eating a completely different way than i was accustomed to. i drank only water the whole time. mostly because it was hot and i was so active i didnt want anything else. which is probably a big factor considering i came from home where i drank at least one can of pop a day. also the food was camp food so most of it was questionable. like literally the condiments said "imitation" on them. therefore i lived off of the salad bar the whole time i was there. So in short being present is important. its really easy to be caught up with life. ( im a college student who goes to school fulltime, works 30 hrs a weeks, and has a longtime boyfriend of almost 6 1/2 years) so i want to say thank you to you Dani for helping me to make healthy choices easier and not overthink it!

I totally relate to all those points. I spent five weeks in Europe and the UK, eating whatever was being served, stuff I normally wouldn't eat at home, and lost weight due to all the factors you mentioned. The food was beautiful, fresh and hand-crafted. The other big thing was not watching TV in the evenings, cause that's when big snacking happens.

I experienced this as a child. When I was 10, we went away to summer camp for two weeks. We ate 3 meals a day and we had dessert at dinner time. If there were snacking, it was with fruit. I recall a lot of summer fruits. Snacking was relatively healthy except at dinner we may have an ice cream, fudge or Popsicle. Even contests were healthy, such as watermelon eating contests. And of course, we did nothing but move all day long. Walking through the woods, swimming, running, jumping, arts and crafts. I distinctly remember feeling good about my weight loss at the age of 10 years old.

I went on a 10 day vacation where I was walking a lot more than normal. I was still a bit in diet mentality, but that was the same as back home. What changed is that I was a lot more active and, as you said, you tend to have more distinct meal times because the rest of the time you're out and exploring, not sitting around grazing. I lost a jean size (didn't weigh myself) in just 10 days and maintained that when I got home for about 1 month before going back to old habits.

Yes Dani, I recently went on an 11 day cruise. My only worry at the time was that I was already overweight and did not want to gain any more. To my surprise, even though I accidentally left my medications on the dining room table. I actually lo9st 6 kilos and felt great. Clothes fitted a lot better, I felt happier and all my worries wet away. Since been back, I have struggled to regain my health and have gained further medications. Unfortunately, I can't afford another holiday.

Summer 2021 i succeeded in my weight loss journey I worked out and enjoyed and had a really healthy balanced lifestyle I didn’t restrict or anything I just ate in moderation whatever I wanted but then I started bingeing and when I gained weight so I started restricting to lose what I gained but u guys know that restricting leads to bingeing so I kept going on that cycle for 5 months now , before that I used to weigh around 40-45kg not more I had a really fast metabolism since I was pretty much healthy (btw my weight is reasonable for my height & age) but now I gained around 10lbs I’m 50kg and I just can’t go under 49kg it’s has become really difficult and Idk who i am anymore , i got cellulite , double chin and fat all over my body since I lost weight last summer I always had that inner fear of getting back to the starting point and here I am living all I was scared of , my clothes don’t fit anymore and I lost my self-esteem I’m no longer motivated to workout or do anything I just don’t recognize myself anymore so i have 2 weeks now to lose at least 8lbs before a really important event there’s gonna be a lot of people who complimented my body when I lost weight and I really lost the confidence to stand and be who I am while having this body so I’ll really try and work hard this next two weeks I’ll try and keep u Guys updated pls wish me luck 💕

Having an Italian fiancée we go to Italy every Christmas, and the sheer volume of food was overwhelming to me to begin with, but it's all fresh, home cooked, relaxed being family you get forced to eat a little more than you do as a tourist 😂 but still I double my calorie intake and stay the same weight, from the first year this really triggered me to begin eating correctly at home, I love your channel, I only found it a couple weeks ago, but thank you for sharing your life and tips with us xx

Loved seeing this video. The same thing happened to me. I was in Italy for a few months and I actually lost a lot of weight. For all the reasons you mentioned. Home made food (even when you go out its whole food). I walked a lot and no snacking and no fast food and no soft drinks. It was not intentional. It was just how everyone around me ate. I have since fallen off the "wagon" sort to speak and fallen back into the "North American" way of eating; rushing, not enjoying mealtime etc. . So I am glad I saw this video as a reminder.

totally true for me. I used to count all the calories I ate and I worked out. But I couldn't loose weight! I was gaining muscles but not loosing any fat. But now I just enjoy food. I still try to eat healthy, I really like the clean eating, cooking everything from scratch...and I think this helps the most! I am now at my high school weight again. :)

Interesting because Valerie Bertinelli says the exact same thing in her book. Italian food is so good and its normal for them to be gracious and feed you all kinds of things. But in Europe people walk and eat and relish the food and than stop.

Very similar experience I had living in Colombia for 5 months. I ate when they ate and we are a good breakfast and a BIG delicious lunch! Dinner was very small and light. Almost everything was whole foods and meats and cheese, rice, yucca, beans, vegetables, lentils. Etc.. I will say they drink a ton of soda! But overall I ate very well and healthy when I was there! And I lost 10 lbs!

I'm from Europe and did an exchange year in the US during college. Crazily, I was at my healthiest and skinniest towards the end of that year. I was lucky and lived on a campus with endless food options (it was included in the tuition that I got a full ride on too) so I never had to cook. The variety of healthy and unhealthy options were endless. In the beginning I ate lots of junk food and never worked out. Things changed in the last semester when I did cardio at least 3 times a week and consciously made more healthy picks or had a big plate of raw veggies with my pizza slice. Good times! :)

I find when I visit people that have a lot of their family around, such as a family dinner and I am the outsider, just the change of lifestyle is enough to perk some thought into what I am doing on my own time. But really, the thing that gets me going is just when I start walking more and eating when I was hungry, not because I thought I would be hungry soon.

I went to Italy in my early 20's and was there from March to May. I lost weight because like you said I only ate 3 good relaxed meals a day no snacks and I walked everyday. Had pasta at every meal and remember enjoying my food with some wine. I also went on a cruise where I thought for sure I would gain weight but quite the opposite. I indulged in some desserts but my meals were very good and nutritious. 😋

cruise ship. This is our vacation of choice, but what do most think a buffet on water, and it can be. A little advice I was given was don't fear the stairs, so we took them if it was 3 or less floors, not only was it just faster but we did not gain any weight, I even lost a few. The other part was there is a lot more walking that you do on a ship than one would think and you are having so much fun you don't think about it, that and most of the food on a ship is made fresh and in the dinning room meals are calm, slow, and cheerful.

I had a similar experience on a business trip last summer. I was really worried about eating all my meals at restaurants. I made a really conscious effort to order either salads or meals high in vegetables. I think the meals were higher in fat than what I make at home, so I was full. I also didn't snack at night. I enjoyed all the food on my trip despite only selecting healthy choices. I seemed to eat better when I was traveling than I do at home.

They have helped me enjoy exercise again. So I have the exercise portion down just need to watch my food intake and add more veggies. I like your videos. Thank you.

Interesting. I'm originally from South America where the experience with food that Dani had while in Italy, in South America is our lifestyle. For an example of having relaxing, mindful meals, in South America businesses close at 12 pm until 2pm so people can go home for lunch and even throw in a siesta, and of course, meals were 100% home-cooked. South American countries have a lot more things, customs in common with countries in Europe. I never had weight issues growing up there until I moved to the States, here is where my struggle with weight began. When I first moved here, my weight was 99 lbs.

Not even a vacation, but for months I was at a plateau, constantly gaining and losing the same 3 lbs. I was consistently putting tracking my calories with an app and working out 4Xs a week. Finally, I decided that I was going to stop tracking my food intake and worrying so much about the calorie content of my meals and just eat healthy, with a "cheat" on a weekend or night out with friends. I finally broke that plateau and ended up weighing less than I have in probably 3 years. I really think that the stress of thinking "I can only have this much for this meal" along with a busy schedule caused me to fall into unhealthy habits.

I've struggled with my weight since childhood. I went to live in Italy for several months in my early twenties and the weight just fell off without any effort whatsoever. I was eating huge 3 course meals, but there was very little snacking. Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, lots of water, and A LOT of walking. (There was also lots of cheese, and ice cream, and a fair bit of pizza too, so it wasn't all "healthy"!) I came home and gradually put all the weight back on again. Haven't been able to shift it since. It was a happy time for me and I don't think I've ever felt as settled and content as I did then. I'm pretty sure this must be a factor. Stress has been a constant in my life over the past 2 decades and my usual response to stress is to eat something. Not good!

Not to mention the food is most likely non gmo and all together healthier than in the US For instance, the wheat here has 30 times more gluten than in Europe, because it has been genetically modified. I had the reverse experience living in Europe, I came to the US for a week and gained a lot of weight eating what I thought was healthy!

I went to Hilton Head to a one of those weight loss resorts. I had no car and no fast food places I could go to. I HAD to walk to get my meal 3 times a day (usually I was in the main building, but if I was at my villa, I had to walk about a mile or half a mile). If I didn't walk, I didn't eat. It sucked when I got super sick the last week I was there. I loved that when I ate, I didn't get hungry. I wish it was as easy to eat as good as I did there. In Italy,I know they have such good food, but very few people are overweight. They know how to have a great relationship with food, even in Slovenia, you have to leave something on your plate or else your dish will get refilled lol.
