Around 14 million vehicles are sold just in America on an annual basis. Around 1.6 million of those sales are EVs in 2022 and the numbers are looking like 3.4 million in 2024 and over 5.5 million in 2026. If the trend continues, around 30%+ of all vehicle sales in the USA will be EVs easily by 2026 - 2028 time-frame. VW is a global entity and Scout distribution will be international. A wild guess would be around 1/3 of sales will go overseas. That is about what the USA BMW facilities export. A facility that can produce 400,000 EV vehicles at full production in the early years is a stretch in my humble opinion. Nevertheless, over the next five to fifteen years it is feasible to run the facility at close to full production. 95% of all "off-road" vehicles never see a dirt road. I had an Xterra Pro 4X when I lived in Montana that I put into four-wheel drive on dirt roads maybe a few dozen times over the eight years I owned it. Hitting some remote rivers to fly fish. Only once was it absolutely necessary and the technology got me out of a rough situation. As for EV's I own both a V8 470 HP 5.0 liter ICE vehicle and a "Poor man's Tesla - a Chevy Bolt". We now live in an NF/ MLB/NHL/MSL city were traffic is horrible. The EV gets around 132 MPB equivalent as they do better in stop-and-go traffic, while my V8 gets an average of around 13 MPG. I take one trip a year where an EV isn't feasible. It is time to trade in the V8 for another EV. And if I take a long trip I can rent a car for $48 a day. If the Scout is priced in the $35K-$40K I may buy one. Much over that I will probably wait a year or two and get one used.

There is indeed a lot of history behind International Harvester and the Scout. My family all worked at the Fort Wayne harvester plant and actually my great great grandfather helped build the heat treat ovens there during construction of the plant. Between uncle's and grandparents my family had about 140 years of service to IH. It was a very sad day when construction of the Scout ended and when they closed down the plant in the 80s. My dad built and did a full frame off restoration on my grandfather's scout in the mid 90s to commemorate my familes history at IH, it was an insanely cool truck with a bunch of custom parts that made it something truly special. It was totalled by new owners a long time ago but the memories live on. I know most of Fort Wayne would have loved to see them build the plant here. But at least it's still American made. This trail winds through some mountains and ends at a rural town about 40 miles (Airmiles, NOT GROUND MILES) away. It has lots of twists and turns and lots of rocky, uphill climbs. When he began, the Rivian driver showed that he had over 200 miles of range. We ended up having to bring a generator back from town to charge him, as his batteries ran flat a few miles out of town. All the uphill driving used his charge up a lot sooner than he thought it would.

ok, I have always LOVED the International Scout. Despite my excitement on this project I am skeptical of a few things. One is that they are looking to Rivian as a main competitor, and that teaser image looks a little too "space age" for my tastes, but primarily that for a car that will ostensibly be released in 2026/27 the only option as a full hybrid is just a bad call. This should be, at its heart, a hardcore 'froder. That means "go anywhere" and the reality is that charging stations will not be available in the most remote areas, which is the very place this vehicle should be meant to take you. The last thing we need is to turn this icon into a pavement princess. just my thoughts.

@waynegardella62634 ай бұрын
The folks who have not learned anything are those who just can not come to terms that the world is always changing and EVs are here to stay. I have both an ICE and an EV. Have you ever driven an EV? Once you do, you get hooked. I was apprehensive at first but I can adapt to change.
@haroldbradford79834 ай бұрын
The problem is that most all of this is based on "Government mandates" and has nothing to do with consumer demand. A few of these will sell to "hobbyist" or those with a desire to keep up with the times, but electric cars "are not" the future. With current government mandates gutting and weakening our power grid, it's hard to understand how adding electric dependent vehicles are going to be successful and fill a nonexistent void. I'm glad you're excited about EVs, but for those of us who are needing dependable long term transportation we/I are going to stick with ICE for the foreseeable future. I would bet if this same vehicle was offered in the 2 different platforms, ICE or EV, the ICE would sell 100s to 1, can anyone say Ford Lightning, Hummer or Rivian....?
@waynegardella62634 ай бұрын
@@haroldbradford7983 "The Gird" is a lot more intricate than you think. 98% of this so-called "Grid" is healthy and can easily handle tens of millions of new EVs. Utility companies currently invest over $168 billion per year in capital expenditures, much of this going to new power production and grids. They are not going to just sit there and do nothing. These grids will, for the most part, grow at the same trajectory as new EV's come onto the market. It is the same "the sky is falling" lines that naysayers said about adding heat pumps to houses to replace coal and oil heating in houses or adding electric-based lights to streets when we switched over from gas lights, and on and on. Here is Florida, the power company ENCOURAGES folks by providing FREE EV chargers to anyone who wants one and a set $38 PER MONTH fee to use as much power as one needs with no limits. Seems they know what the future holds and is investing heavily in it [at the tune of over $9 billion in 2024 alone!]. I wouldn't worry much about the grid. Yes grids do fail from time-to-time, but so do gasoline refineries. Nothing is ever fail-safe, As for dependability, I have both an EV and an ICE vehicle. The EV has been ten-fold more dependable than my ICE vehicle. Both have over 75,000 miles on them and the ICE vehicle has cost me well over $5,500 in engine repairs since the warranty expired. While my EV has never been in the shop, not a single time. Government mandates have never superseded consumer demand when there is a choice. There is zero requirement from state or federal governments that currently push consumers over to purchase EVs. Some states would like to be all EV by some way out in the future date but that is just "pie in the sky" politics. It will never happen. Sales of America's No. 1 selling electric truck, the F-150 Lightning, totaled 15,645 through June of this year. F-150 Lightning sales for Q2 2023 totaled 7,902, up 77 percent from a year ago. Whereas, ICE F150 sales were 165,514 units in Q4 2023. The ICE truck industry isn't going to be replaced by EVs in my lifetime. My long-term plans are to have both an ICE vehicle and an EV. Both serve their purposes in my big city current traffic congested lifestyle. I get around 13 mpg with my 5.0 liter V8 Genesis, and get 131 MPG equivalent with my Chevy Bolt. Around town driving the Bolt makes more sense. Now, when I lived in rural Montana owning an EV would have been silly-stupid.

If you un unbolted the top, and got three friend to help you move it off, you could sort of get the tires to chirp if you really hit the throttle and dropped the clutch. My siblings got to drive a Scouit II. My dad also took a look at an International Travelall, but decided that he wanted a vehicle that could get miles per gallon rather than gallons per mile.

Are they in an echo chamber or am I? I hear such mixed news surrounding evs. Someone interprets the data one way claiming they continue to grow in the market while the government seemingly forces the transition. Then, others see the data and claim these vehicles sit on the lot much longer and are slowing in sales to the point that some manufacturers are rethinking the all-ev thing and are introducing new cars that had been advertised as ev-only with now options to be an ice. This vehicle as seen in renderings elsewhere also looks like a miss and just looks like another bulky crossover. While I understand that regulations create a very difficult obstacle when designing smaller vehicles, how difficult would it be for someone to design and build a basic small vehicle with just a good old fashioned 4banger or v6? Especially if it were designed to match the former International Scout, it seems like it would sell like wild. Similar to the Gladiator. While it does seem like it sells well, it’s just a swing and a miss to me. It should have not had the back seat and been several feet shorter much like its own predecessor. At least Ford (with the Bronco) stayed true to the styling of the old Bronco (unlike Chevy just slapping Blazer on another crossover). Eh. It’d be awesome if they took the basic 2-door Wrangler, made it a little smaller, and made it as retro as possible.

May i ask how you come to the conclusin that hybrids increase engine longevity? Given i only drive 1 hybrid to this day, but it is less than a year old. (A Skoda Octavia PHEV) But i can't see it increasing engine longevity, rather the opposite: It always wants to start in EV mode unless you press a button to make it go into hybrid mode. So by default, it empties the battery complete and then from 0 to anywhere between 1500 and 6000 rpm (depending on the speed and situation you are driving in) snaps in the ice engine. The ICe engine has no preheating or anything, it starts cold and gets kicked in at high rpms when more power is demanded than the battery can provide or the battery is empty. Doing high rpms with a cold ice engine is not what i learned as prolonging engine life. Also constant starts and stops of an ice engine (like a hybrid does) also ins't good for engine life. To me the only engine prolonging way would be like Opel did with the Ampera (no idea how that model chevy was named in the US) or BMW's i3 with the range extender do: there the ice engine isn't constantly started and stopped and kicked in from 0 and cold. They run the engine to produce electricity. So the ice engine runs at it's most efficient rpms and basically like a static motor. No changes in load, no 10-20 cold starts per trip...
@Datastacked9 ай бұрын
@@nirfz, Hmm I'm not familiar with that brand, my experience is with a traditional hybrid AWD Toyota and the ice engine is always running the moment you start the car. Toyota uses both engines to power the drivetrain, the hybrid assists and puts less strain on the engine. Plus you never have to charge a traditional hybrid battery because it's using your engine to stay charged .If I understand it correctly you're PHEV doesn't start the engine until you go pedal down?

I’m actually pro EV, but I’m not sure this is a good choice for a pure EV. A PHEV would seem to make much more sense. My Tesla is great for what it does, but I like that my Wrangler 4xe doesn’t actually create a problem if there’s no obvious place to charge. I also really like running under electric off-road, so an electric off-roader is actually appealing to me. However, we are about to drive to Yellowstone tomorrow and we’re taking the Jeep because I’m not confident that the Tesla would like being left unplugged for days up there and the charging options start to get scarce up that way. For an adventure rig, right now, we just don’t have enough viable charging options. The issue is not the electric drivetrain (in my opinion). The worst charging network was created by VW, so maybe they’ll fix that part of the equation if they ever want to be able to sell these here in the US.

An all electric off roader, is an issue. Don’t get me wrong, 99% of these will be pavement princesses anyway, so what does it matter? Yeah, probably correct, for the most part. However, I’d want a true off roader, and at this time, EVs really don’t work for overlanding. You can have some fun, at an off road park, but they just done work, as an overland vehicle, unless you want to bring a generator. So, why not bring the generator along, as a hybrid. Diesel electric would be perfect, but after dieselgate, VW isn’t going there, so gas electric would be perfect for these. I’m still happy to see the scout return, and all EV is fine for most, it just wouldn’t work for me.

Bringing the scout back would be great if it had solid axles front and back , and a modern efficient ICE which new computer controlled fuel injected ICE's are now , very efficient and very low emmissions . The many problems with electric vehicles (as the tech stands now) , such as range, range off road (running out of battery in the bush, can't plug into a tree and solar is a no go, again how battery tech stands now) and range during cold weather , infrastructure , pollution created from mining the raw materials, to make the batteries as well as generating the power to charge the millions of electric vehicles that potentially will be out there in the future , battery disposal and cost, not to mention the human cost of the horrific exploitation of cheap labour (child labour) to mine the materials off shore. No , it all sounds good but the tech isn't there yet , not by a long way , they keep pushing these electric vehicles and in some instances they are a good fit i.e.. running around town , then go home and plug it in , but then if everyone had one the grid would crash . And how about the battery fires that produce it's own oxygen and are very, very difficult to extinguish without the correct fire fighting gear.... Just to name a few. For an off road vehicle or heavy hauler or long distance on and off road tourer , as the technology stands now it is a no go. The powers that be are trying ram this down peoples throats before the tech is there or the grid-infrastructure. Should they keep working on alternate forms of power yes of course hydrogen is a good one , but as of this writing it just isn't there yet for electric. As I said ICE are very efficient and low, low emitters of pollution and they are getting better and better all the time . This is what engineers should be concentrating on , making the ICE as efficient as possible and continue to evolve it. Cheers Wild Bill Jeep overloading the remotest parts of northern Canada .

I am worried that it'll just be another luxury "off-road" crossover like the new defenders and not a mid size truck SUV like the wranglers and broncos. Europe doesn't really do trucks, even VW's Amarok is just a reskin of the ranger. I don't want another glammed up 80k midsize crossover that went for road feel over genuine off-road capability. Take a look at what they are doing to jeep, every vehicle outside of the wrangler is just some uber luxury vehicle which doesn't fit with Jeep's heritage. From a literal utility vehicle made for war, to a farm vehicle, to an enthusiast off roader. Even the "Luxury" jeeps of the past like the original grand wagoneer were more on par with mid level luxury like an olds or a plymouth and not this mercedes fighter they are making now. Maybe they include a pack of folding solar panels that can charge the battery up 10% in a week of sunshine, so you could even reach a charging station after a month or so. It could be ideal for alpine refuges though. (the small buildings in the alps where hikers can stay over night) They people running them usually go down into the valley once a week to get supplies and then back up. (Usually around 20-30km one way) and they could charge it fully in the valley while loading up all the groceries. This way they make it up back up the moutain. And down again a week later, they recharge enough to make the few kms on the flat. (as i would expect it to loose charge like all EV's while standing around trying to "phone home" and stuff) But i doubt they will buy that, those guys usually use pretty old things with no modern tech in them that they could get rather cheap and run relatively cheap. (Like small old offroad trucks from the 70's and early 80's. Even old "surplus" military G-wagons from the 80's that got auctioned off for low money)
