The 2.0 diesel engines Duratorq from Ford that are equipping Mondeo and others are one of the best diesel engines ever. My car has nearly 400.000 km and I've replaced the flywheel and clutch kit once and nothing else. I had the car for more then 7 years and it's the best one I ever had.

Spot on with the mileage estimate. My previous MK4 was used as a taxi and lasted 142k before the flywheel started rattling. The clutch and slave cylinder were ok but changed anyway. Now have a MK5 and keeping an eye on your videos for some useful tips.

Well the flywheel is a signature ford problem. My father has it rattling for 4 years now on a mk2 galaxy, and still going. I had a 57 focus 1.8tdci and it was rattling, and now i bought a mondeo, and previous owner changed it 20k miles ago. Current mileage 180k miles and drives like a cloud. Really comfortable car.

For some strange reason the mk4 1.8 tdci wears clutches out faster than the 2.0 tdci! My friend has a mk3 2.2 ghia x that has the single mass flywheel conversion which is obviously a bit snappier on clutch engagement. He didn't have it installed but found out later after he bought the car. I prefer dual mass flywheels and after covering 145,000 miles in my 2.0 petrol mondy it still works fine and the clutch still bites about a third off the floor. I don't do standing starts like some of these pushed for time execs lol...😅

I was a taxi driver for 17 years. In 2007 I was given a 1997 Peugeot 406 diesel with 118k on the clock. All those miles were spent towing cattle. It was replaced not long after, and I put 250k on the replacement clutch. The car retired from active service 6 years later,still on the clutch and there were 451k on the clock. Peugeot's and Volvo's were the best cars on our fleet,but the mark 1 Mondeo diesels we bought in 2000 were terrible. They were bought to replace Sierra's we had back then,but due to so much trouble,they expired before the 2.0 petrol and 1.8 Sierra's did. Mind you,we had to replace the 1.8 engine, which went off in a cloud of blue smoke.

Well, I've been wondering why my clutch slips occasionally at over 50mph on 5th gear.....just done an oil change and noticed droplets of oil at the bottom of the seal between gearbox and engine. Black oil. So I'm suspecting a leaking rear oil seal???.....what do you reeckon Alan??.....Should I leave to get worse or bite the bullet and do a strip out?. How long does it take you to do a full removal and reinstall of gearbox?.....having seen yours and a couple of other vids my confidence is growing to take this job. Don't have a ramp but have all the other kit. Atb Ps. Bad luck really as the car is 9 years old and only done 60k!

I’ve recently noticed it makes a clunk when changing gears especially when going from 2nd to 3rd and I’ve also noticed it makes a low but audible rattle when slowing down from 30 mph in 2ng gear. I’m not sure if it’s always been like this as I have the radio on most times and cannot hear it. Have u any wisdom to share with me. Hi Alan, stumbled upon your channel as our MK4 TDCi is coming up to 125k and therefore the timing belt is due for a change (far too big a job for me though!). Question related to clutch, when in first gear and pulling away there is a juddering from the engine (not the pedal, this feels fine although the bite now seems quite high from what I remember from when we bought the car). It tends to become more shaky when I've been doing a lot of town driving. I do mostly motorway miles (around 65 miles a day) and was wondering if this is a sign of the DMF on its way out? Doesn't happen in any other gear and car pulls clean and powerful in every gear. Sorry for the long post, just wanted to ensure you had all the info 👍 I do KZbin stuff so can appreciate the work that goes into it - thanks in advance and keep up the good work
@alan4x
@alan4x 5 жыл бұрын
hi, i would say your clutch centre plate is wearing thin and more to the point some of the clutch cover springs are weak which is giving you judder when pulling away... the clutch plate is not being engaged evenly anymore...quite common on an old clutch, the dmf would just make the engine vibrate badly and you would probably hear it rattling at idle speed
@DaveWestMedia
@DaveWestMedia 5 жыл бұрын
@@alan4x Hi Alan thanks for the reply. Funny you say about engine vibration, would this be as any speed including revs at idle? The engine is very smooth but I've noticed when accelerating onto the motorway there's a wobbling sensation from the front end but i think this may be the from nearside tyre is off balance - think we've hit a big pothole at some point as if I put the car in neutral at speed the wobble is still there. Bloody Welsh roads! Your reply makes sense so I guess I'll see if it gets any worse (it hasn't got any worse in the last 6 months).

Hi, I have a 2009 mk 4 Mondeo 1.8 tdci. Car drives ok most days but some days feels a bit more sluggish than usual. When I pull off from standstill, a majority of the time I hear a loud noise as if the near side front brake is rubbing/vibrating..almost like a hooning sound, although its clearly not the brake as I have put the car in 1st with the hand brake on and basically gone through the motions of a hill start but not releasing the hand brake..the same noise is there..that is bad/slipping clutch right? Next...when I turn off the engine with the clutch pedal depressed...the engine comes to a halt as it should..I guess...but when I turn off the engine with the clutch pedal released...the car comes to a halt with a very noticable judder judder clunk!!...am I correct in saying this is the early stages of dual mass flywheel failure? I have also noticed a slight "tink tink tink" noise when the engine is at idle, and the car can be jerky (after a long run) when I back off the accelerator in 2nd. I have been quoted over £1200 inc vat at most places, Ford being the most expensive @ £1250 inc vat .. But have managed to find a well respected independant garage who have quoted £750 inc vat for a LUK DMF and clutch change. Any advice you can give would be much appreciated. Thanks, Ben.

well alan, you seem to be the PERFECT guy to answer some questions, if you dont mind? can the mk4 mondeo diesel (any of them) have the solid flywheel conversion carried out on them , and do YOU do it to your vehicles, and if not , why not? if you DONT do the SFC conversion, what MAKE of clutch, flywheel and csc do you fit to your vehicles? many thanks t5jerry
@alan4x
@alan4x 5 жыл бұрын
hi, yes you can get solid flywheel conversion kits for most mk4 mondeo variants...and no we do not fit them...the only example i can give...a guy with a mk3 2litre diesel duratorq engine comes in with a slipping clutch...he purchased a clutch kit and solid flywheel from ebay as it was cheaper than buying a duel mass flywheel etc, we fit it and he goes off...three weeks later he is back saying can we take it all out and fit duel mass flywheel and put clutch back to standard..basically the engine was vibrating a lot and the clutch was very harsh when changing gear and it was bad to the point he could not live with it and wanted his car as it was intended. we have thought about solid flywheel kits but after that it kinda put us off.. we use LUK clutches

Phil Fagan Hi, thanks for your comment. I don't ever recall hearing a single click noise when pressing the clutch down on a mondeo. Just to check here for sure .... have you tried sitting in drivers seat with all doors and windows closed and engine idling. Press your clutch pedal down just before half way... if you hear a constant rattling noise then the flywheel is worn. If you hear nothing the flywheel should be ok. Trouble with the release bearings they tend to rattle rather than a single click. Seems a bit of an odd one.
@Jakub-cv1fk
@Jakub-cv1fk Жыл бұрын
@Phil Fagan Did you ever find the cause of the knock? Have the same issue on my 2014 Mondeo 2.0 TDCi, seems to be only happening when pressing the clutch after moving forward in first or after moving backwards. The noise can also be heard in neutral but only when the engine is running. I think it may be excessive wear on the arc springs within the dual mass.

Rob Thomas Hi, I am pretty sure your engine, which is a Peugeot engine .... a different variant of the one I changed the clutch on should last about the same kind of mileage of approximately 140k or more. The mk4 mondeos with the really bad clutch and flywheel life were the 1.8tdci which were knackered at 60k quite often so the Peugeot setup was much improved lol

HI. I have a 2009 Mondeo 2.2 TDI. I have difficulty engaging first gear when stationary. the car as 370,000km. do you think it's the master cylinder, ? clutch,? or something else?. I. almost always at traffic lights, I have to first engage third gear, and then first gear to start 😕

My 2.0tdci lasted until 215k when the dmf exploded. Out of interest I had loads of trouble because my garage asked if I wanted the crank seal replaced. I said yes as it was a low cost part and seeing as they were there. However they scratched the end of the crank and it was spewing oil. Does it make sense to change that seal or was I taken for a ride??
@alan4x
@alan4x 5 жыл бұрын
hi, i never replace the rear main oil seals unless they are visibly leaking and they don't often leak...it sounds like the garage had good intensions as it would make sense to replace it with the flywheel off but obviously it has not worked out and only caused grief. problem is it is now down to them to rectify your oil leak you never had to start with

No mention of doing the crank seal behind the flywheel while in there, is this not something that needs doing with a clutch change on the MK4.

Great job ..but you not mentioned that when replacing the pressure plate it's need to be reset.. ..folk have fitted the pressure plate only to find that the clutch pedal is so stiff as a result resulting in slave cylinder damage. Some are already reset when new but some ain't . Apart from that top bloke

@Aleksander9003

Hi Alan, my clutch does not disengage the gearbox properly and im not exactly sure why, Im beging you for help now. The problem is when I start the car with the clutch on than I can select 1st and reverse no problem, but when I start the car and let the clutch go and wait and the press it again its hard to put it in 1st or reverse, it is great when the car heats up, but it is bad when cold. I did put new motor in with the gearbox from 2014 smax with 40k on the clock (mine is galaxy 2011) I didnt check the clutch but Im assuming that it is ok after that kind of milage, then Ive change master cylinder and brake fluid, but my clutch pedal seems like its clicking when I let it go, if the return spring is removed then the clutch pedal doesnt come back all the way, should it come back all the way? It feels like there is some sort of air lock in the system, but ive bleed the clutch like we do with brakes, Is this how it should be done? Or is there any other clutch bleeding method for this car? Thank for your help.
@alan4x
@alan4x 5 жыл бұрын
hi, it is difficult to tell without seeing it but i would check your pedal assembly properly especially where the master cylinder joins onto the clutch pedal pivot point as if it is loose or fractured you will not be getting the proper pedal travel to operate the clutch. to bleed the clutch i would connect a brake bleeder to the slave cylinder with a one way valve so the air and fluid can only be forced one way but first thing i would do is check out that pedal clicking noise
@Aleksander9003
@Aleksander9003 5 жыл бұрын
@@alan4x Thank you very much for a quick reply, pedal assembly itself seems to be fine, the clicking noise that Im on about is the noise of a play in master cylinder hole where its connected to pedal. But it think it is because when you press the clutch all the way down and you let your foot go master cylinder itself should lift the pedal all the way up as the pressure in slave cylinder from clutch pressure plate should be well enough for that, but instead whats happening is master cylinder goes back only 3/4 way back and leaves like 3 to 4 cm free play in the pedal and when i put that spring back pedal goes up till that point and then that springs takes it all the way up, and that clicking noise is from when master cylinder stops pushing the pedal and gets pulled out instead. I know that there should be some play in the assembly, but what I dont understand is why that master cylinder doesnt push the pedal all the way up, all the other vehicle with hydrolic clutch that i was working on havent had that spring on the pedal it was just the master cylinder that took them all the way up and no spring was needed. Is this supposed to be like that or should I bleed the clutch again somehow again? Could this also be broken pressure plate that doesnt push slave cylinder all the way back? Or a rusty spline on clutch disc that prevents the disc from free movement? Im sorry if you didnt understand me, but I simply dont know all the proper mechanical terms to describe that. Thanks for your help again:)

Hi there, I am in the prosess of changing the flywheel and clutch on my 2009 Mondeo. It`s run 302"km so it is about time. However when I removed the subframe I noticed tha the vacuum hoses to the DPF is shot to peaces. I have not been able to find out where wich hose goes wear from the DPF to the vacuum control unit. There is one long tube and one shorter tube on the DPF, does it matter witch goes where on the vacuum control unit?

Hello, I have a Ford Mondeo 1.8 tdci zetec with a lynx engine. The car has shakes/ vibrates at idle and even worst when I accelerate at 1200rpm. After 1500 rpm it becomes more balanced . The flywheel is not knowing ..it is a slight noise difference when the clutch is down however the shaking does not change at all.Nobody has a straight answer for this..some say it's the dmf..others say that this might be do to an injector. Any thought on this please ?
@alan4x
@alan4x 5 жыл бұрын
if you had an injector not working the engine would have a misfire and would not clear after 1500rpm.....the 1.8tdci were bad for knocking out dmf.....with engine running.....push the clutch pedal down about half way....if you hear rattling it is worn out, if the flywheel is left to rattle for much time it becomes really out of balance and causes the engine to shake at idle and drive almost like a misfire
