@@jakez5227 I'm an independent through FedEx so it might be different but there isn't really a designated break like that. We finish when the last package is dropped off and go home. 9.9/10 times I eat while driving (carefully of course)because the more I stop the later I get home. Some days I don't eat but that's lack of preparation on my part.
@jakez5227

@@agreensubstance at ups you get a 20 minute paid break and a unpaid lunch 30 minutes or an hour depending on what state. If I start talking with a customer for an extended period of time I will put that in as part of that paid break just to cover my butt. Drivers tend to only take a few minutes of lunch because it's unpaid, but you have to take some sort of lunch break on a shift

Difference between a worker just working a job and a career man. Companies forgot that a long time ago.
@Automedon2
@Automedon2 Жыл бұрын
@@RichieB40444 Well, I tell you, being the runner was an ass buster. This was the days before tech, when you had to manually write the info about each package as you were trotting to the door. No bar codes or scanners. This was also in Florida, where even in December it was pretty hot. I don't know how the drivers worked in the middle of summer. The guy I worked with was in his early 40s and his knees were shot from jumping in and out of the truck all day. I don't know how the trucks are nowadays, but these were the days of the cool vintage looking trucks built especially for UPS. Hard seat, no AC. They must have destroyed all those trucks because I never saw any that made it to the market after they retired that style. This was in the early 80s, BTW. A cool tidbit too was the route was on Longboat Key - a wealthy part of Sarasota and we had several celebrities on the route, including Lucille Ball. Greg Allman's girlfriend, some famous writers, artists and New York TV producers had winter homes on the route too. The drivers couldn't bring the truck back until it was empty, so sometimes we were still working at 10pm and then he'd have to call in and if there were any other drivers having trouble, we'd have to go and help them finish their route. They had just started hiring female drivers and sometimes we'd get there and the woman was in tears - that's how stressful it was. I had worked on a horse farm since I was a kid, so I was used to hard work but it couldn't have been easy for the drivers just coming on board. USP in those days was so image conscious, that even being a season worker required several steps, like a process of elimination and you had to wear a shirt and tie for the interviews - hair cut short, no facial hair. It was a process of elimination and I felt pretty proud to get the gig. Anyway, though it was a short seasonal gig, I remember it like it was yesterday.

UPS in 2022 here’s the thing I worked for UPS in 2020 to you, sir, off as either a loader or an unloaded. This is fucking difficult because they want you moving over 300 packages per hour and when you realize the packages can be small or you can pick them up in your hand without thinking about it or they can be big and gigantic and heavy, and they come in random order so that’s difficult to stay at a minimum of 300 boxes per hour being unloaded or being loaded into the truck. To put it in perspective, I have my BSN. Currently starting out working 12hr shifts at night. Base Pay is 39 and change. With Night Shift differential I’m starting at $42-43 an hour. After my first year my base pay jumps about $10. But that’s besides the point. What I’m trying to say is that after 2-3 years, you can be making more than a base nurse makes working longer hours. Not to mention the OT you get which adds up overtime. All you need is a high school diploma/GED. In my eyes, it seems worth it while you work on other stuff in life. Or just want a stable income for a while and work your way up.

But the $42-$43 an hour is base pay for your first 8 hours. After 8 hours it's overtime. So $64+ an hour at that point. Plus cost of living increases spread over the contract. Plus full benefits. I've had two motorcycle accidents with multiple broken bones and it didn't cost me one cent in medical bills. Plus you can get paid by the union while you're out of work. Plus paid vacations. I've been driving for almost 20 years and I've rolled some vacations, but I've got like 9 weeks next year. There are down sides to the job, but not enough to make any of us quit. Oh yeah. We also have a pension with a company matched 401k.

Go fuck yourself. Delivery drivers are over paid for a cushion of a job. Let’s hear it for the people that load the trucks every day moving 400 boxes an hour and you don’t even have that many boxes on the delivery truck. Oh I get you have to drive a certain route and that takes a certain amount of time but you get to sit down in the chair while you’re driving the people back at the warehouse loading the trucks are sweating their ass off in a hot ass trailer loading nearly 400 boxes per hour, I’ve done this job there is a tough fucking job. The delivery driver has it so fucking easy and he’s so over paid for the amount of work that he does while the intro job at UPS is loading a fucking truck 400 boxes per hour and when they are you they promise you’re going to get $20 an hour but when you show up on the first day of work they say all we’re only going to pay you $15 per hour, those are some of the hardest working people I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with they’re good people, but my fucking God is loading a UPS truck fucking difficult at all hell. Not only that but this guy makes nearly $40 an hour driving a delivery truck for eight hours a day ad being a truck loader at UPS only paid $15 for a maximum of 3 1/2 hours a day so fuck you delivery driver. Fuck you delivery driver, give it up to the people that are willing to stay and be a truck loader at UPS to make sure your packages get delivered to the right place. Yes that is the real difficult job at UPS and I know because I worked there doing that job and I went out and got a better job. It’s because before I went to UPS I had a $12 an hour 40 hours per week job that paid twice as much as I was getting at UPS when it came time for paychecks. That was $15 an hour for three hours a day five days a week and a two week pay. Which made me usually between 300 or $350 a pay check at UPS versus by $12 per hour job 40 hours per week which paid me nearly $850 each paycheck. So the reality is that I was making more money for $12 an hour then I was for $15 an hour and I was working an easier job for $12 an hour and I was working my ass off that made me sweaty tired and sore every single day that I worked at UPS for only $15 an hour and a $300 paycheck 2 weeks.

@@scotttild I understand that no job is as easy as they say, but ups was a special kind of suck in my opinion. I always went to work early and hustled all day. It seemed like the more you did, the more they poured it on you. When I left, I weighed 150 pounds and looked anorexic. I wasn't eating because of stress and it took its toll. Just wasn't the job for me. I was a coverage driver, so I had to know about 12 different routes. I've always found when I covered the same route for a week, I could get it nailed down, but they would switch me up daily and would end up having issues with management.

My advice is start at UPS as holiday relief, it’s what I did in the 90s. That way u get a feel for it. Believe me it’s not for everyone. It’s hard demanding work and you’re on the road all day. Make sure u can pass a thorough back-ground/criminal and drug test etc. I started out driving, there wasn’t a waiting period back then. Early 2k I left for greener pastures elsewhere.

i work for the warehouse, which is what everyone does more or less before driving. some of these drivers will have a light ass route and still find a way to get those hours, which is okay imo since UPS makes huge profits. also if a package is damaged usually it’s from being crammed or the belts gave them a good tumble. as a college student i’m also afforded $5,250.00 a year for tuition for a max of 25k, UPS gives this money no strings attachment as long as your school says you passed. as an engineering major and an active morning person this job has been the best thing for me.
