Once again, your honesty and transparency are very refreshing. People may thing that $115K is a ton of money, but let's face it, if you were a DIY TV host ( pick any of them) you'd have a much higher salary just from your face time. Here you are also wearing the hats that go with the business office, the production crew , writers, the army of people who build all the little props etc etc etc and the list goes on That you are able to produce 22 videos in a year along with having a family and a "regular" job - phenomenal I don't know what it would boil down to, but I'm willing to bet that if you had a total hours spent number, and did that math, that your hourly rate of pay for this side hustle woudl be lower than your day job and would be lower than most of our day jobs here in your audience. You produce an excellent and high quality, entertaining, and informative product You add value to my day I'm happy to sell you my eye-ball time for such a cheap rate because you inspire me to go pursue shop greatness on my own, and I need that after putting in the day job hours. So thank you.

Thank you so much for sharing. I've been pushing out videos for over 5 years now and earn only a few hundred dollars a year. That's a personal choice as I don't make videos that people want to watch. However, I started a new channel this year to release more... watchable... videos with the hope that I can generate some extra income. Your "side hustle" is more than my household income and that's super encouraging!

This video (similar to the one from last year) is so helpful and eye opening to understand whether an individual or small business should explore some of these avenues as a worthwhile in the long run. It also shows the amount of hard work that goes into making good worthwhile content on youtube. You are correct, the work really has to be your passion. I enjoy woodworking/making and have enjoyed following this channel for quite some time. Thanks for sharing!!!
@jonwooddell39663 жыл бұрын
I think this type of video is perfect for those who are considering starting a channel. Just getting into woodworking, I have become painfully aware of the cost to complete a quality project. Your video doesn't address the cost of supplies for you to make these projects (wood, screws, glues, hardware, etc.). Unless your sponsors are supplying you with all your materials, I think it would be a great addendum to this video to highlight how much the cost of completing your projects for the year sets you back. I say this as Profits - Expenses = Net Income, just so people can see doing something like your channel is not pure profit. Thanks for what you do, please keep it up!

First of all, great to see your hard work pay off. Despite increased adds, I still love your channel. Secondly, your transparency is refreshing, quite intriguing and satisfies a curiosity I had about KZbin success. Your humility shines through….never lose that on your March to success, as it’s part of the charm of the channel

Not a subscriber until today. Mostly it was your clear articulation of several factors and your overall business model. I also appreciated your appreciation for the craft, your recognition and logic as related to your time versus benefit ratio. If you can relieve stress by being selective with Sponsorships and still experience a less than 10% deduction in income but eliminate 20% of your stress, then you are going to experience a net gain. Recognizing this earlier, instead of chasing each dollar will probably enable you to continue longer and experience less burnout and more satisfaction which leads to more creation. Good for you. I hope you continue to be successful.

I was just watching the breakdown of another KZbinr who makes cutting boards. Extremely high volume work, expensive materials, incredibly time-consuming. The guy is hustling and I'm so happy for him. But your model is much more sustainable over time. I finally checked out your Etsy page. 20 bucks for detailed plans is definitely worth it. Hell I regularly waste more than that with a single bad cut on an expensive board. Regardless of the business model, it's just great to see people living their passion in a way that wasn't possible not long ago.

Love the transparency. Advertising income is always uncomfortable if the author gains benefit from his endorsement. It raises the ethical question regarding whether that endorsement is biased in favor of who is paying the bill. This was the death of TV howto channels, they became overrun with endorsements to the point of turning into infomercials. Fortunately an unmoderated comments section can add balance, which is one of the key positive elements of this medium.

From the few videos of yours that I have watched so far, what comes across beyond the good humor is the honesty of the reviews. It is hard to believe that sponsored video can, in the longer term, stay honest - just the reality of the monetary incentive. It is good that so far it is such a small share of your total income - my vote is to avoid these... it keeps the channel "cleaner". All the best wishes! I am still waiting for the Laguna saw actual review though....

Congrats on your growth! You run a good channel, and you should be rewarded for it. Two quick quibbles: 1. There absolutely IS 'COGS' for digital products; take it from someone who has been in the tech/software biz for over 20 years. What there 'isn't' is (significant) INCREMENTAL 'COGS'. Meaning your cost of goods sold is virtually identical whether you sell one or one million. (News flash: This is why software companies make so much money...) 2. While not directly visible, there is most DEFINITELY a cost to affiliate advertising that is passed on to every Amazon (and other companies) customer. It's just that it is completely pervasive, and there is no way for the customer to circumvent it, so it SEEMS as if there is no price penalty for the existence of the affiliate business model. But, just like the spaghetti sauce ads say: "It's in there...". Keep up the good work. It will be interesting to see whether your revenue and net earnings increase directly in proportion to your subscribers, or at a greater or lesser rate, now that you have crossed the 100k subscriber threshold.
