In this video, we're going to cover an important topic, especially if you're an athlete. How much potassium and sodium do you need when you're sweating?
You need about 4,700 mg of potassium every single day. If you're exercising, you're stressed, or you have inflammation, you may need up to 6,000 mg a day.
You need 2,300 mg of sodium per day, which equals out to about a level teaspoon per day. But that's for someone who doesn't exercise.
If you're doing an intense workout outside when it's hot, you could lose up to two pounds of sweat (.9 kg).
• You could lose 500-2000 mg of sodium per hour
• You could lose 150-500 mg of potassium per hour
Glycogen is stored glucose in your muscles and in your liver. When you exercise, you use up your glycogen. When you use up your glycogen, you're also losing your potassium. This is one of the reasons why a long distance runner could get cramps, bloating, or fatigue. It's because of the loss of potassium even more than the sodium.
Symptoms of low potassium:
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Weak muscles
• Muscle spasm
• Increased heart rate

I almost died in 2017 from very low potassium. An ambulance has to pick me up at a store. Had 4-5 IV bags of potassium. Then this past June, I had to live in my car for several weeks. I ended up in 2 ERS within 5 days, dehydration and low potassium. I was swollen and the Dr said it was from the heat, as I had no ac in my car. It got up to 114 one day. I was prescribed potassium tablets for 2 weeks. I now take the vitamin potassium tablets almost everyday. Always thought I would have cramps in my legs but it cramped my heart. I now have it checked every few months. Ty for spreading this Info.

The longer my blood sits in test tubes the higher my potassium levels get when they do blood work. My cells release it into my blood as it sits around in a lab. I don't have any more problems since our clinic switched labs. Just mentioning it in case anybody suffers from high potassium readings.

Potassium is so easily overlooked. Those with cramps are often told it could be low magnesium, but potassium seems to be forgotten. It's true that blood tests are not very useful for testing most vitamin and mineral levels, as these levels are tightly maintained in the blood. Testing cellular levels of these nutrients is an excellent idea, unfortunately these tests are generally not well accepted by mainstream medicine.

I, as a new patient told her they ran low during the past, but didn't mention that they were taken during hot weather after a long walk from my car to the hospital. I'm in the high sweat group because I work outdoors in central FL. 90+ degrees every day of the summer, which is 6 months long here. So I supplement with potassium and magnesium, and salt my food. Currently using Redmond Real Salt, and also some Himalayan pink salt, which I just read is actually from Pakistan, but wouldn't sound quite as exotic for marketing. I was a bicycle racer for over 25 years, and REALLY sweat here doing that!

Ok, so hear me out on this. A couple weeks ago I had to walk in to a hospital ER. I was light headed and near passing out to the point of catching myself before I fell, 3 times. Had been keeping up on nutrients as best I could. Asked the doctor to run a blood panel for minerals, etc. POTASSIUM was low, that was the only thing found out of place. Apparently, my body is hyper sensitive to potassium and magnesium levels, more than most people. Anyone else run into this?

Hi Dr. Berg I had a quick question concerning Kawasaki Disease. I was diagnosed with this when I was 2 years old. I am 33 now and have recently been doing my own research into the long term effects of the disease. It seems there have not been many long term studies that have followed people into adulthood. I am concerned about possible complications and if there are any specific dietary things I should be doing to negate any conditions I could be at a greater risk of. A visit to my Primary Care advised me to exercise, stay away from bad cholesterol in eggs and red meat, and have my check ups.... not much help. Any advice?

Thank you so much for this Dr. Berg. I work in a potato processing area that is hot and steamy and physically demanding all year round. I'm drenched in sweat every day. I sweat so hard, I've gone all shift without urinating because that's how much water I've lost even while vigorously drinking. I've been really cautious about upping my salt intake as I have hypertension, but have no choice otherwise I go into complete lethargy mid day. Never been a big salt guy either, so having to down raw salt is a little unpleasant and feels mildly suicidal to be honest. But when I do, my heart feels so much better. Good to know at least the potassium loss is minimal. I usually drink a electrolyte mix on break to make up for that K loss. Perhaps I'll drink more to hit that 6000? I have a feeling my body doesn't absorb Potassium as a raw electrolyte that well. It does work to some degree at least because it feels like I have more stamina then I ever had, even in high school.

I've been goaling for about 5,000mg of sodium a day. It seems too vary a bit around that number in reality, over 5,000mg and under. I add a tsp of Himalayan pink salt a day and have been for a bout 2 months now. I used to often get this annoying pulse sensation behind my right ear, especially in the AM waking from a nights sleep. That sensation seems to have now subsided mostly now. I wonder though if my sodium intake is too much? Although, if needing 2300mg a day and considering how much could be lost or unabsorbed due to nutrition and possibly medication (still take a blood pressure med. Losartan and a calcium channel blocker for mild tacacardia (SVT)). So perhaps the 5000mg target may be still ok, and helping? I do believe I'm getting about 4700mg of potassium a day and don't really work out athletically or much more than short distance walking most days.

You need to clarify that the 4700 number is based on being on a starch based diet not a Keto Diet. You eludeded to it when you discussed Glycogen and potassium depletion. The Keto Diet is Electrolyte sparing diet and the Starch based diet is heavy Electrolyte consuming diet. The RDA's are representative of a Starch based diet need. Scurvy & Vitamin C are the definitive example of how a Keto Diet and Starch based diet differ in Vitamin needs. NOTE : STARCH BASED DIET APPLIES TO ANY DIET WHERE THE ENERGY IS DERIVED FROM CARBOHYDRATES, SUGAR, FRUCTOSE, ETC. MANY LEADERS OF THE HIGH CARBOHRDRATE DIET CALL IT STARCH BASED WHERE TECHNICALLY IT IS CARBOHYDRATE BASED. PLEASEXAVOID GOING OFF TOPIC DISCUSSING FRUIT, POTATOS, BEANS, RICE, ETC.

Because my body produces metabolic fluid that doesn't get sweated out in addition to my food and drink. 🙁 If I mention it to any of my doctors I just get a "hmm?" I've got my stage 5 diet down pat. I really need to find somebody that can figure out why I can not sweat. It would help me with fluid control if I could sweat. If I excercise I don't lose weight I gain fluid weight in addition to what I drink. A normal person sweats more fluid than they gain from exercise. I sweat zero. Not even at 100 degree temperatures.

He probably wouldn't recommend them. He's pretty much against fruits on keto. I eat about 3 or 4 dates a day. Great source of potassium and other nutrients, I also eat bananas. I feel ike I'm in optimum health.

Dates and bananas are basically pure sugar. Avocados, per serving, have more potassium than dates and bananas combined. Many fruits are fine on keto, especially berries of all varieties.

Good morning Dr.Berg! I have been doing IF all day for 5 Day now . I been taking your electrolytes and 2 tablets of your nutritional yeast and a teaspoon of Himalayan salt THE RESULTS: 1- I’m not hungry at all 2-My stomach/belly is getting flat rapidly☺️ 3-No cravings BUT on my 3rd Day I started feeling very week (but still not hungry or craving anything) and I have this pain in my right knee don’t know if it is because I don’t have a gallbladder or if I need to add a bigger dose of your Electrolytes and Nutritional Yeast. I would really really appreciate if you make a video about this please Dr.Berg. THANK YOU!!

Dr.: If potassium is so necessary in such large amounts, why does the FDA limit supplements to 200 mg?
@maddisonbythesea3015
@maddisonbythesea3015 4 жыл бұрын
Because unless you are working out often or living a ketogenic lifestyle your body doesn't lose potassium in large amounts. While we do need a set level too much potassium can cause arrhythmia. Sadly a large part of the population is quite sedentary making it very easy for them to overdose on potassium. It's much safer to get your potassium fri'm food than supplements. Here in the US our potassium supplements are limited to 99mg for that reason.

I did not understand the blood test part. Potassium in the cells but not in the blood????
@nnr2dm243
@nnr2dm243 4 жыл бұрын
He means that most people will show normal in their blood levels (potassium within ranges considered normal) when in reality as most potassium is stored in and around cells- an actual standard potassium blood test is a little inaccurate, yet will show normal in the blood.
