Dr. Daniel Amen has been and continues to be a trail-blazer in providing a roadmap for the wholistic care of the amazing human brain! His "Best practice" of the need to actually look at the organ (i.e. imaging the brain) before treating the behavioral issue is so important! I really appreciated the reminders: MOVE!--Blood flow to all organs of the body is critical for wholistic health. WE were created to MOVE!

Dr Amen became my favorite guy when I started watching him on PBS as well, especially when got my husband to watch who was struggling with addiction at that time. Dr Amen explained what was happening in his brain due to addiction and he understood his brain was sick that changed our lives! Thank God he's free now. "Its Not mental illness, its BRAIN HEALTH, When you get your Brain Right your Mind Follows."

"Getting well is never about 'I should do this' or 'I should do that.' It's a sign of how much you love yourself." WOW!!! So true! This is powerful information. I have followed Dr Amen for years and I'm thrilled how he's coming into ways that everyone can apply, whether you can afford a brain scan or not. THIS is where it's at!

This is gives so much hope to all those struggling with mental illnesses. My biggest take away is knowing you can start improving brain health simply by eating the right foods, continuing to want to learn, and getting better sleep. So many great points that I need to listen again to absorb all the information!

The breakthrough that I will be sharing with others is to always tackle the low hanging fruit such as nutrition, sleep, relationships, lifestyle prior to considering an medications. The side effects & possible addictive qualities only patch up the symptoms, leading to more issues down the line. Let’s make this world a better place, one meal at a time! Thank you Shawn! This episode had SO MUCH great information that resonates with my personal and professional life. Initially I felt grief because I work with improvised children and families that are in chronically stressed environments, including taking medications for possible misdiagnoses. Feeling as though this information is too complex for their current lifestyle I realized the importance is that I am getting educated with this information. With that, I will continue to change how I work with this population and the service providers who have a daily impact on these families. In addition to the work that is being done on a larger level, such as Dr. Amen educating politicians on brain health, all of these aspects are vital for change. Thank you, thank you!

As a life coach, I LOVE studying neuroscience and why we do what we do, and showing people how they create their results in their life by how they think. And I am totally intrigued by the different types of brains. WHAT? Had to go take the Brain Health Assessment. I'm so fascinated by our brains, and LOVE this topic of how to take care of our brains, to optimize it.

Shawn, I found you back in November. I have been on an amazing Journey. I weighed 256lbs at Thanksgiving and now weigh 216. I am so great full for what you do. You have made this health journey fun and exciting! Some things suck though. Like listening to Vanni Harri. She bought light to a lot of the foods I use to eat. But it has been fun changing them and finding new ways to make my food healthy. This episode was another 🤯. I really like when he said that working out shows how much you love yourself. I can attest to that. Such a powerful episode! Keep it up Shawn love ya man!

My biggest take away... improving our mental health is more than changing the way we think or react. It’s also important to take care of the organ that allows us to think. This is game changing for me. I need to upgrade my efforts to heal my brain not just my mind.

In 2019 I woke up one day in February (11th) and had a severe case of Vertigo. Ih ave been on a years journey to better health and brain health. I am still having some episodes after numerous tests and medications (23 pills in one day in the beginning) I am now down to 1.25 pills a day!!!! Dr Amen has been an inspiration to myself. Thank you for sharing this podcast. I have had a horrible time getting other health care professionals to actually dig in to "figure it out" My biggest take on this is the brain is an amazing organ that we all need to know more about. There are so many intricate things that make you g0 hmmmmmm…… Also my dad was diagnosed with multiple mental health issues. This is big for me to try to make sense out of my childhood years. Never too late even at 50!

My biggest take away is how the brain can change and how Nutrition, Exercise, and sleep can really alter how we think and grow. I'm scared to take medication, even though I'm a nurse- I think that in some cases, it's necessary but we're only manipulating the physiology and not actually solving the problem. My mom has expressive aphagia, and I have a 5 year old.. I never knew this kind of stress and I think it's extremely important at this stage in my life to learn all that I can because not only will it help me, it will help my help my family and my patients. Really love your podcast and information (along with backed up research) you provide. Great job guys!

Due to a traumatic brain injury, 4 years ago from a fall from a bicycle, I've been on a search for ANYTHING that will help my brain heal. I now eat a nutrient-dense diet, nothing but foods that have a purpose. I have little taste, smell and don't experience hunger so it's easy to look at and eat food as fuel. Also to improve blood flow to my brain I daily do a program called Brain HQ. This program is like doing a marathon for the brain and I always feel a bit better after I've done it. Another thing that has radically helped me is cold showers (Wim Hof method) and walking around the freezing outdoors with only a sundress and sandals. This jump starts my brain's circuits in an amazing way.

I’ve been watching Dr. Amen on PBS the last few years. I bought his book this morning. I’m looking forward to reading it with my 30 year old step-son. He has Asperger’s. Hopefully I can encourage him to take some of the steps that Dr. Amen suggests. Cross your fingers. I loved this episode!💛 it brought so many tears to my eyes throughout, thinking about past memories. As long as I can remember ive always had trouble sleeping, till today. And one day, before the age of 7, my family and i were going up the stairs to our apartment and it was very late. While they were opening the door, i was the in the back of everyone, and while standing on the stairs, i fell asleep falling down multiple flights, which caused me to stay in the hospital overnight because of the head injury. I rarely think about that story And never told anyone about it because it meant nothing to me. Yet, my sleeping And this incident could be reasons of So much more that ive went through in my life. Thank you for this information💜❤️

Thank you Shawn for sourcing and sharing this information as I am not familiar with Dr. Amen.. "If the hardware does not work then you can't program it" is what sat with me the most and additionally when Dr. Amen said "I am opposed to doing it all in the dark - that shames people." I mean wow and duh! I guess we start to learn more as we communicate and learn from our mistakes. It kind of takes me back to the historical phenomenon of surgeons simply washing their hands and sanitizing before they go from one patient to another. It seems so simple but it definitely sounds like there is more to learn and understand here.

Wow. The irony that I would happen to stumble upon this episode...This has shed a very bright light on why maybe certain people who are part of my life may be acting in ways I cannot comprehend or why I can't communicate with them on an effective level. I can't just mention one thing I took away from this episode because there are too many key things that are so important. I believe hearing about inflammation in the brain was something that surprised me, as I was previously aware of inflammation of other organs but never attributed inflammation to the brain and what it may cause. Very informative episode! I am going to go search for the book next! Thank you for sharing this with us!

Next relationship I need to see their brain!! Lol that is awesome! A takeaway I had was getting away from the stigma in mental illness & focusing more on brain health. I've suffered from anxiety & depression and never wanted to see a psychologist in fear of being looked down on or being prescribed a drug without really getting to the bottom of the problem and trying to fix it naturally. I'm excited to get the book and dive in deeper. Thanks Shawn and Dr. Amen for this episode !

As model health show listeners, we all know that sleep is SUPER important to health. However, I love when I hear it emphasized from other people other than the Sleep Smarter king himself (Shawn!) and learn even more benefits of good sleep. For example, when you sleep poorly, your brain doesn't work right, which leads you to make poor decisions the next day, which could also have more snowballing effects. Great episode featuring such an intelligent psychiatrist!

Thankfully, I'm also in a much better place and still rehabbing and progressing slowly every day. The insight I latched onto was was your insight that psychiatry is the only field of medicine that doesn't look at the organ they treat.

A few of my favorite parts were when he was talking about if someone wanted to “be a bad leader” they should give out donuts at church, talking about how damaging sugar, etc is to the brain, also statistics about how when soldiers get less than 7 hrs/sleep that their shooting target % is only 50%. It was pretty profound when he discussed using his scans to rule out Alzheimer’s Disease in people with memory loss, and discussing how his wife’s father was able to teach an 8 hr seminar after he regained his memory. I can’t wait to read the book.

I NEVER thought about blood/ blood flow as being so important before! This makes so much sense. I feel like this a "well duh" moment for me right now. Gives a new dimension to the idea of "the blood is the life." I understood the role of inflammation more than I understood the importance of blood. I also didn't know Rosacea (which I have) is a sign of inflammation. I had always been told it was just a skin sensitivity. I am going to listen to this one multiple times as it's so dense with information. Thank you!

"Nobody thinks about their brain because you can't see it- it's not part of the conversation, but it needs to be. Your brain runs everything" With multiple family members with Alzheimer's, my wife and I are doing everything we can to keep inflammation lower and pursue brain health. She moves to stave off depression. It's been hard with three kids six and under to ensure great movement, sleep, and overall mental health but we try and also see a light where things are starting to get easier to implement these practices.

Wow! This was an amazing episode! I’m a student of natural medicine and just recently did my capstone on nueroplasticity and I wish I had seen this episode prior to my research! I love watching the shows! Shawn Keep up the good work. Dr. Amen, thank you for spreading the word and the education of the importance of actually looking at the brain. Amazing episode. I struggle with focus and memory at times so I will definitely be rewatching this episode to soak up all the wonderful knowledge! However, the biggest takeaway that I got from this episode is the fact that “brain” illness can be fixed simply by FIRST looking to find out the issue or which part of the brain is damaged. Then once that part is known, it will be much easier to develop the right protocol for healing the brain and hence healing the mind. Very powerful show! I can’t wait to read Dr. Amen’s new book. I know there will be so many more great nuggets of information!!! Great show gentlemen!!! 5 stars hands down!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Renewing All Things This episode really hit home for me- my dad took his own life and I believe if he had known this information it could have been different- but I will spread this information and truth to as many as I can do it doesn’t happen to someone else- my biggest takeaway is the four circles. So simplE yet so powerful and tangible areas to upgrade to bring the brain back in balance. How there is so much hope when you nourish the physical body, but also the mental/emotional and spiritual. You are three parts so treating all three around a certain issue truly does bring lasting healing. “How your purpose controls your health”- so true. Shawn & Dr. Amen thank you so much for this intriguing discussion! Sharing what stood out to me below: x The field of psychiatry is the only field of medicine that doesn’t actually look at the organ they’re trying to treat (throwing darts in the dark: medications based off a conversation or symptom x when you get your brain right your mind follows | head to head with anti depressants exercise is equally as effective x (brain) its 2% of the body's weight but uses 20-30% of the oxygen, blood flow, calories you consume any level of deprivation can call cause an illness mentally x the best way to get someone to fall in love with you is to do something special for someone they love x blood flow issues anywhere can be an indication that there are blood flow issues in other places (like brain) x people that play racket sports live longer than anyone else because they activate the cerebellum (it has 50% of the brains neurons its like the CPU of the brain) coordination exercise is great x when you sleep your brain washes itself so remember to #sleepsmarter - this is a must listen!!! Thank you Model Health Show!!!

I love this episode! I watched it in March and watched again today. So much great info from Dr Amen! Learned I need those omega 3’s from fish oil not just plants. Love beets for great blood flow and I will never stop learning as I age. This stuff is fascinating. Take notes!!! 😀. Thank you Shawn and Daniel... you both are amazing and so knowledgeable!!

The connection between "leaky gut" and "leaky BRAIN"?! Wow. Never thought of it that way. So interesting!

First takeaway is: why aren’t more professionals doing these kind of scan?! I want to go back to school now! Secondly, I’ve been learning more about dementia recently and so the idea that once you stop learning your brain starts dying really stuck out to me too. I have immediately passed that little tidbit on to all the middle aged and older alders that I love. Finally, as a parent, it reminded me how important it is to set up good eating habits and a love of real food at an early age. (Wish me luck with that one!)

There is so much amazing information in this interview but Dr. Amen's comment about "loving donuts is like being in an abusive relationship" really resonated with me and made me laugh!! What great, great information that will help me in my practice. Thanks Sean, you are amazing!

I thought it was interesting how brain health and homelessness are related. And how knowing you have a purpose in the world helps you live longer. The brain is a powerful organ influenced by so many internal and external things! Very interesting episode.

This was a very good episode. I liked the part where the Dr spoke about it being the only medicine practice that does not see the organ they are treating, so of course there are going to be mistakes and problems that occur.

As important as our Brain is for our existence and contribution to our society, we have been duped to believe that our medical "experts" have all of the drug-induced answers. I've been a fan of Dr Amen's studies and theories for many years, was so happy to see him on The Model Health Show.
