Truly a tragic fall. I say this as a Gordon fan, but seeing him caught multiple laps down not even halfway into the fall Kansas race this year after getting caught up in an early wreck made me sad.

I hated Johnson when I started watching nascar in 2009. When he was at the height of his career. Towards the end of his career 2016 I actually liked him. And from then on to only see him 3 more times in 2017 when I actually liked him kinda sucks. Everyone hates someone who dominated the sport. Now I just wish he would finish a dang race on the lead lap. Great video brings back a lot of memories.

That Pocono wreck really seemed to shake him to the core. Probably the hardest hit he ever had. He got out and sat down. He wasn't as young as he used to be. I remembered Dale in 2001. And he had a lovely family, and wanted to be there for him. He made his mark in the sport. Love him or hate him, he deserves his place in the Hall.

I remember that Johnson was uploading videos in 2020 talking about each track in the leadup to each race, and in his video for Pocono specifically mentioned his 2017 wreck there, and his Busch Series wreck at Watkins Glen, where he mentioned that after his Watkins Glen race, he had promised himself that he'd turn into the outside wall if he ever lost his brakes, and that after his Pocono wreck, he beat himself up over not turning into the outside wall.

I’m 30 and watched nascar since I was in diapers.. I got to see some crazy stuff.. from my first favorite #2 wrecking like crazy, to #3 wrecking to end his life. To jimmys 2nd year when he became my favorite.. watched him win 7 championships.. truly was astonishing… now we got Joey L. To watch hate him or not.. he’s gonna be a legend and current fans need to keep their eyes on this kid

Im not saying JJ didnt get hurt at Pocono, but; •2013 Greg Ives was promted •2016, car chief Ron Malec moved up. Now he over sees all the HMS cars.. •2018 NASCAR changed the rules AFTER the Camaro body was designed. It won 4 races all year. •2019 the Camaro was the same. I think it had 5 total wins. •2019 Chad Knaus let the car fall apart on the pace laps at Dover. Jj is the most winningest driver there and the fucking car falls apart on the pace laps? •2019 Chad and Jj get split up 3 days after the car fell apart at dover lol •2020 Kevin Meendering is a bust of a crew chielf lol •2020 Camaro get ZL1 nose, JJ started doing better, SHOCKING I KNOW. •2020, Covid ends practice and the Camaro teams show hit and miss with setups. •2020 JJ had C19 and had to miss a race. The thing is that the 48 team built its strategy around the Chase for the Cup during the seasons Johnson won the championship, just like how in the pre-Chase era NASCAR teams would start points-racing (driving more conservatively and settling for Top 10s) around August or September if they had at least a one race points lead by that part of the season. Johnson and Knaus were smart enough to recognize that with the Chase, the ideal time to peak would be late October. That and Johnson almost won the championship in his rookie season (2002), which is considered THE MOST competitive season in NASCAR history (he was only done in by mechanical failures---including that time where all 6 Hendrick engines failed in the 2002 EA Sports 500). Of course, the 48 team was helped by the fact that the Johnson/Knaus pairing was the only one to remain intact from 2004 to 2010, whereas other driver/crew chief combinations that could have taken at least 10 wins and/or 1-2 championships away imploded (most notably the #12 team of Ryan Newman and Matt Borland, the #20 team of Tony Stewart and Greg Zippadeli, and the #97 team of Kurt Busch and Jimmy Fennig). This was of course also the case for Richard Petty (who frequently had a car with 100 hp more than rivals in the 60s, and even in the 70s was one of the few drivers with factory backing), Dale Earnhardt (who mastered the art of psychological warfare in racing in a way that not even Darrell Waltrip could), and Jeff Gordon (whose main POTENTIAL rivals in the late 90s either died in 1993 (Davey Allison and Alan Kulwicki), were hampered by injuries (Ernie Irvan in 1994 and Dale Earnhardt in 1996), or became owner drivers and experienced a major downturn in performance (Ricky Rudd, Bill Elliott, and Geoff Bodine)). That and Johnson himself hasn’t been the same since his crash at Pocono in 2017.

Fun Fact: If NASCAR didn’t change the points system, but instead kept the superior Winston Cup points system that equally factored in every race during the season, instead of heavily favoring the late season races. In that alternate universe, Jimmy Johnson only wins 3 championships and Jeff Gordon ends up with 7, tied for the most with Petty and Earnhardt.

I think we should give Johnson a break, here. When your brakes fail into turn 1 at Pocono and you hit the wall not up front, but sideways sort of tail first your head gets hit hard by the side wall of the hans, which, at this angle, can't absorb the power of the hit as good as when you hit it rather front ahead. I can understand that he propably wasn't the same afterwards,anymore, because the hit is one thing, but the torture you go through when suffering from a severe concussion is something that shakes you even more and for way longer. It's absolutely understandable that you loose confidence and have worse reflexes for a period of time,if not forever, which only adds to the loss of confidence into you and your abilities. I know what i am talking about.

As a Jimmie fan it hurts to see how far he’s fallen. I personally believe his struggles with the next gen are two fold, one he always drove loose race cars, the next gen doesn’t handle that kind of setup well even the later years of gen 6 didn’t 2019 and 2020. Secondly since he doesn’t have much seat time in the next gen he can’t adapt his driving style as fast as he used to. He also has had some rotten luck getting caught up in first lap crashes at least 3 times (cota, Kansas, Daytona)

People keep pointing this wreck out as his downfall but it had nothing to do with the fall in performance. 2 of his 2017 wins he backed in to. The other was on a repave that Hendrick as an organization hit the setup on. His other 2017 stats prior to the wreck were awful. Dover and Bristol he ran well at post crash. There really wasn’t much of a difference between the 2017 season and the rest of his final years from a performance standpoint. He just got lucky to win a couple races. A combination of the following lead to the falloff. 2014- ride height rule change 2015- removal of horsepower 2015-No testing 2018- Laser Scanner tech let’s be real Camaro body

I started watching the sport at the start of 2018, so I never did get to see him win. His career was incredibly unpredictable, and with it pretty much over now, he can probably focus more on being an owner. As for this year, he's set to run again at Vegas next week, and in the finale at Phoenix. For next year, though, there are no plans. There will still probably be the 84 open car, but he might not be the driver.

I remember after the Pocono crash a post race interview he talked about changing his driving style to keep from wearing on the brakes so much and whatever that change was, wasn’t it. I think he didn’t get hurt but it physiologically messed him up. It was almost like he forgotten how to drive.

The fact that Gordon was significantly more consistent than Jimmie during Jimmie-s championship years, irks me. Jimmie was one of my favorite drivers, but if I had to choose between him and Gordon, I'd choose Gordon. Now 83 wins isnt anything to laugh at either. Jimmie definitely lucked his way to a 7th championship and you could see his fall off then, but I believe he was placed 2nd fiddle once Chase came around. No longer did people care about 7x, it's Elliot who's important now and only did enough to keep Johnson a better than Top 20 driver. Jimmie's career hinestly feels like Cars 3 and it shouldn't have been this way.

I feel like he was very lucky to even get to 7 Cup titles like in all honesty after they ran the numbers on how he'd have fared in the Winston Cup points era, he would only have 3 season titles. Jeff Gordon remains the best driver to ever sit in a Hendrick chassis because he was competitive from start to finish in what 22 full season's in the 24 car & like Earnhardt was racing for the title in his final full season although in Dale's case we didn't know that was his last season at the time. A lot of Jimmie's victory's just seemed like races where he was just there at the end & got lucky unlike Gordon who was always a take the bull by the horns driver. I just always felt like he was over-hyped, he may have 7 titles along with Dale & Richard but he is definitely the weakest link among the three of them...

Hendrick contributed to Jimmie’s downfall. Once they stopped winning, he just stripped the 48 for spare parts until he retired. 7 titles, and the thanks you get is to be pushed out into the Pacific on a toilet seat. Of course, Jimmie’s back in his Jerry Rice Seahawks era with Petty/GMS/Legacy, so now he’s doing it to himself.

This is literally all speculation. People really have selective memory. Chevrolet was absolutely horrible when the Camaro ZL1 was first introduced. Only four names won races until the Camaro was remolded in 2020 - Austin Dillon (‘18 500), Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, and Kurt Busch. The Camaro was a 200 mph dump truck. The last three years of JJ’s full-time career was not his fault and I feel bad for him. 2018, 2019: Chevrolet sucks. 2020: COVID, no practice and/or qualifying. He showed glimpses of hope in 2020 even with the lack of practice, but it never translated to results. Couple this with the tremendous decrease in horsepower… he stood no chance. I’m sure the crash scared him sh*tless no doubt, but to act like this was the reason for his decline is hilarious.

Even in 2019, with arguably the worst combination Jimmie could be dealt all around (at least Keith Rodden wasn't there to be on the box), he was still on the cusp of a playoff berth versus Byron. Imo Johnson now would definitely still at least be a Ro12 driver if he was full time in a Hendrick level car; it's not like his current performance (barring how he gets consistently taken out in something stupid) are far off Jones and JHN.

The crash had nothing to do with the drop off of JJ. His fall started after his 2013 championship. He kept getting wins in 2014 and 15 but his consistency dropped drastically. He is statistically the worst champion when he lucked into the 2016 title. All of this happened before his Pocono crash in 2017. You could say the crash exasperated the downfall but in reality, the downfall started in 2014.

I think it’s no secret that Jimmie was concussed in that Pocono crash. My honest opinion is that if Jimmie had sat out a race or two and let I’m assuming either Allgaier or Bowman run the 48, he would’ve been able to win a few more races. I don’t think he would’ve gotten 100 wins or 8 championships, shoutout Lewis Hamilton, but I do think he would’ve gotten to 85 at the minimum, but no more than 90. Yes I think Jimmie still goes to IndyCar, but I can’t say whether or not he ends up owning Legacy. Johnson said himself he only came back to try and get his 84th win, hence the number. That’s just my theory.

It wasn't mild. He got visited by the Grim Reaper. It was just a talk, but still. In order to win in Motorsports, you have to be absolutely fearless. That hit put fear in him. Fear of dying. He's a father and devoted husband. He's very faithful. That wreck made him realize he was mortal. Once that happens, it's over. You gotta believe you are invincible.

Honestly, I think Jimmie was on the downturn even before winning that 7th title that was, let's be honest, gifted to him by Edwards and Logano. 2016, if you watched the races fully, he was starting to become more inconsistent with his finishes and race craft. Yes, he did win 5 races but that 5th one that won him the title was gifted. His top 10 finishes were down, 4 DNFs and average finish went downhill. Then in 2017, even before the Pocono crash it was getting worse. Time I think was catching up with him, much like it did Gordon who's career took a turn after his 2008 Vegas crash and he never really regained form until 2014 where he went all out in which I'm suspecting he knew he was retiring after 2015. Fact is, Jimmie after essentially 15 years of dominance just ran out of steam. It happens to everyone, it happened to Dale Sr in the mid to late 90s. Was he still a good driver? Yeah, but at the time of his death, he was going to be replaced by new talent soon. It's happening to Kyle Busch, it'll happen to Larson, Elliott, Bell, etc eventually too. Time just won out

Lol, that crash had nothing to do with Johnson’s drop off in performance. He and Knaus had been arguing quite a bit the last 2-3 season and the reality is that once Knaus was gone Johnson couldn’t beat the field with equipment like he had the rest of his career. Never thought of him as anymore than an above average driver because his record on the road courses was pathetic and excluding Martinsville his short track career wasn’t anything special either. Those are the tracks where the wheelmen shine, not 1.5 mile aero dependent cookie cutter tracks where Johnson had most of his success.

Johnson was and still is my favorite driver to this day. These days I root for Hendrick Motorsports drivers, but I've never found a true substitute for him. I remember being so excited to see him get his 7th live on TV. I was 11 at the time. It was indeed pain seeing him under perform. But I should be happy because I got to see him win races and was able to celebrate with him every time.

Of all the thousands of memorabilia I have on display, I only own 2 1/64 and 1 1/24 pieces of him. I don't know what it was, but I never resonated with JJ. It would most likely contribute it to him being so dominant from out of nowhere. It's odd because I generally enjoy all nascar drivers with or without talent, but JJ isn't considered 1 of the best drivers in Nascar. That sounds super ignorant, but maybe you can understand the remorse a traditional fan was going through during this time.

Same deal with Schumacher in F1 around the same general time, but Schumacher had baggage from being involved in a team that were caught up in a ton of controversy. Schumacher went to the best team and had a hand in directly causing the 2005 USGP fiasco due to tire rules being changed to prevent utter dominance

@jacekatalakis8316 The Schumacher family has grass roots in racing. I don't know of anyone who JJ is related to. This is why I mentioned being a "traditional: fan. JJs father was a construction worker, and Jimmie had no ties to racing before or after his career. Yes, he owns a nascar team, but besides that, how else can JJ stay relevant? We've all seen drivers raise kids into racing, but I think JJ will eventually be phased out as an anomaly. He really has no great story to tell, and it's like he bought a team just to stay relevant. I don't feel like a lot of drivers respect him like so many greats who accomplished a lot less. Long point is, if i was asked the name Shumacher, I immediately think of a long-lived racing family, and if I was asked Jimmie Johnson, I'd immediately think of the retired football player who made male enhancement commercials and I don't even watch football

It's one thing to claim that you don't believe that JJ is considered one of the best drivers in NASCAR history, everyone is entitled to their own personal opinions and I respect that, but I think it's pretty ridiculous to claim that he's not considered by the wider NASCAR community as one of the best in the sport's history. I will say that I'm biased as he was my favorite driver growing up and still to this day for transparency's sake, but the dude had one of the most dominant careers in NASCAR history and it's impossible to deny that he is the most dominant individual driver of the 21st century.

@romansans1 like I said, he was an anomaly, no doubt, but 7 championships in a row and that many races won took previous driver multiple decades to achieve. I just don't resonate with him. It felt more like Nascar trying to recreat something, but it didn't really stick like the previous champs. Ask 10 people randomly who the 3 greatest Nascar drivers are in history, and I am positive that the results will be in favor of my opinion. Again, this is a traditional fan's perspective. You may highly disagree with this opinion as well, but Kurt Busch was exponentially better than Jimmie Johnson. I'd consider Kurt a much better driver than JJ, to be honest. Kurt Busch has been through the worst race teams on track and managed to pull off phenomenal results. How many times has Kurt been in complete garbage with absolutely no sponsorship and won victories? That's a great driver, and JJ is not a great driver because he lacks passion. JJ has shown 0 ability to even be a mediocre driver after the 48 ride departure. I bet JJ could not even get a top 5 in xfinity or a truck either. Aric Almirola has more passion than JJ. Jimmie Johnson is not the most memorable driver of all time, and that's just my opinion
