How Poppy Playtime Won Me Over - A Retrospective

I have not discussed Poppy Playtime in detail in over a year and a lot has changed since then. The landscape of indie horror has changed, my channel and career have changed, and my feelings and opinions have changed. Today, I return to the Poppy Playtime franchise to re-review the first chapter, the second chapter, and Project: Playtime.

I disagree that Mommy long legs isn’t scary. The abundance of the “sensual voice” is, in my opinion, supposed to seduce the player in the way that they don’t see her as much of a threat, attempting to humanize her more monstrous nature. She gives me yandere vibes, and if you know anything about that archetype, the creepiness practically writes itself. Something about characters acting too nice to you, only to do a 180 if you piss them off just a bit gives me a genuinely unnerving feeling, which is great when we’re talking about horror.

To add onto this: Her “Sensual Voice” as you call it can help putting some unease in the player; It sounds too “Sugary”, Too “Sweet” if you know what I mean. And I think that was all intentional to make the player think “Yeah, that’s not right.”

Unpopular opinion, I think Mommy Long Legs has my favorite monster designs in the game thus far. I love how her body looks as if it's being stretched to its natural limit, her fingers are all crooked, her eyes are as wide as the full moon, and that smile. My god, that smile. You can tell that her design wasn't made to have a smile that wide, because you can actually see the whites of her eyes from inside her mouth (seen easier in her jumpscare). I'm glad they didn't just give her sharp teeth and called it a day. It takes what Mommy Long Legs does, that being stretching, and uses that to make her scary. Edit: I'm referring to her feral form, not her base form, if that wasn't obvious.

I really love that Poppy Playtime is finally going through a redemption arc. I've been a Poppy Playtime fan since the start and for a while I would be scared to be as vocal about being a fan, because I know in the world of the internet, and especially on Twitter, an opinion that's different from the many people with the same exact opinion, have normally lead to getting harassed, at least from my personal experience. So it's great to see people who originally hated it are now changing their minds about Poppy Playtime today and allowing it to redeem itself.

@@Dragonmongamer I understand that, I guess it just affects me more on a personal level, because I experienced similar harassment as far back as the early 2010s where people like myself would get harassed for liking Sonic 06, which while yes it's not a good game, I still found ways to enjoy it regardless of its flaws. So it's just upsetting that the same level of harassment just for harmlessly enjoying a game is back again at full force and possibly even got worse than ever before, because now fans have to fear of getting more than harassed, but also possibly running the risk of getting doxxed, all over liking a video game.

Mob entertainment even said in a discord message awhile back that chapter 3 was going to be very scary, saying things like the new hand mechanics tieing into the horror and the new puzzles blowing us away. They even said that we were going to lose our minds when we see the trailer for chapter 3, so yeah there is tons of potential for poppy playtime.

In my eyes, I think Mommy Long Legs is terrifying. She has some very intense chases, one being the one where she counts down, where you feel like you constantly have to move or she will be breathing down your neck. It makes you paranoide as you feel like she could come in any moment. And I don't know how she sounds sexual in any sort of way? She sounds like a psycho, she constantly hides her brutality with this calming, motherly like persona she puts on until she has enough of you. The part where you have to pull yourself up is also so intense. She is scary because of her attitude and creative chases. She toys with you, wants to see you suffer, and she doesn't only manipulate and over power the player, but also everything else around her. I don't know how it ended up like this with you if this is your sense of seductive, but you do you. Not everyone will agree on everything, and that's the beauty of it, but I present my case of why in my opinion Mommy Long Legs is Scary As Fuck!

Never expected a video like this from you. I'm the same here. I like Poppy Playtime. It's not the best and I have my own issues with it (like Chapter 2's infinite amount of puzzles), but I still like it. I honestly hope that Mob Games' next chapter for the series will be really good, considering how long they've spent making it. And considering the Banban epidemic still going on today, I think any release of Poppy Playtime will be very refreshing. Fingers crossed for a good Chapter 3.

I never really had the drive to play either demos myself, nor Project: Playtime, however, this video has sold me into giving P:PT a try at some point. And while I don't think I'm still personally interested in Poppy Playtime's main game, it does feel nice to have some of the biases and rumors I've been told about the game to be busted. I remember always hearing this game in a negative light, and unwisely sorta just assumed this was "another generic child thing is evil" game. I will confess that even after this video, I find my view still more in line towards that of say, John Wolfe (just to have a named example). That being said, it's nice to actually see and understand what this game is like. It's certainly a visual treat, and the sound design is actually very confident, and things like a the instruction tapes are actually pretty neat. I think what caused a lot of people to brush this game aside was the loud discourse around the game, which is valid to remember, but I think people might've forgotten that things can change. The studio might've had it's missteps, but evidently they can also take steps to improve and redeem. I feel sorta dumb not granting this game it's chance to leave an impression on me, because from what you said in this video, it sounds like it still is a work of art. A sentiment that people tend to forget due to bad faith games that do exist solely to grab money. But I think it's the lack of this perspective is what is causing so many people to feel doom and gloom when it comes to mascot horror. So thank you for giving showing me this game in a different light, and while I may still not have a strong desire to play the game (except for Project: Playtime possible), I welcome Poppy Playtime to my list of games that shows the Mascot Horror is still a show of art and won't be dying anytime soon. Tl;dr: This was a masterpiece of a video (considering how I had like a whole essay worth of comments lol), and it blasted through any prejudices I had toward this series. I say thanks for both showing me another perspective and for making such cool videos like this one.

Great video! This was a really grounded view on the game and I think you did a great job expressing your experiences with it. I remember liking the concept because it was Bendy-inspired, but the drama and controversies kept me away. I was a fan of other media that gained controversies around that time, so I was pretty adverse to getting attached to another media that was going through the same thing. Just wanna add a bit of extra salt about chapter 2 the barry car section could softlock at launch because the game forces you at certain fps and sometimes that would make barry not fall down the road, in fact it was patched some hours later after the youtuber Core on a stream gets locked for near 2 hours trying to resolve. You know, there's been quite a bit of questioning about episodic video game releases, and it's interesting to see, because it's episodic, how much they change. I make comics as a hobby with my friends, and technically that's what it's like: you have an episodic medium that takes time and wasn't done in one go, you listen to feedback and see what can you improve or what else could perhaps be done . and I think Poppy playtime really had to find what it wanted to be, and that's okay, some works develop over time and maybe develop differently than you planned. bendy and the vaccination machine would be a good example of listening to player feedback and the ideas that people had, no joke Alice Angel was actually something they hadn't planned at all, but they found it interesting to explore .

In concept I like more the idea of a stretchy toy monster. Because, it screams body horror potential. Imagine how her body can contort and expand, how each limb could have a mind of its own how she could literally regenerate from damage. Great video, i agree with a lot of what you said, but i don't really agree with what you said about Mommy long legs, i personally or found her design very good because unlike huggy wuggy Mommy dosen't use Sharp teeth and googly eyes to be scary because personally i found this aspect of huggy a trivial way of trying to make him creepy ( although i can admit that huggy had a better construction of the atmosphere), on the other hand i think the creepy smile and the Mommy,s dilated and empty eyes, combined with the disturbing way She moves and her unsettling moans have made her quite scary, as regards her speaking, i didn't find her dialogues too long or annoying (by removing the initial dialogue all her dialogues could last a maximum of ten/twenty seconds which i personally don't consider to be very much), personally i really like these type of characters who are Crazy but at the same time very playful, and also i really like her story, then it's true that talking makes her less scary but dosen't necessarily make her a bad character, but if this Is your opinion i respect it

It's a really good video As a game designer and as someone who really enjoy gameplay in a video game I can tell that poppy playtime is probably one the most frustrating experience for me because they have good ideas for mechanics but never fully exploit them, the puzzles notably are just bare ones compared to what possiblity they have, but it's the problem of chapter games, you can't know if it will reach it's full potential until the end Chapter 2 very much was a cold shower because the puzzles, while you find them fine and it's your right I find them quite frustrating, not because they are easy but because they barely exploit Thier mechanics which I find more frustrating than bendy who basically gives you what it promises there is no false hope in bendy lol Poppy show it could be a horror game with puzzle mechanics using extendable arms then throws a Simon at you It's quite frustrating lol

Project seems to be close to 2 major updates, with PJ confirmed as being worked on + catnap also being teased, 2 new killers for the now 4 maps should hopefully kick the game back into the public consensus. + im curious to see what you thought on chapter 3? Was it better than Ch1 for you?

It didn’t take me long to fall in love with Poppy Playtime. Honestly this game is overrated without being given a chance. Glad MOB Ent is putting the “horror” back in mascot horror. Also about Project Playtime, they do plan on adding two new killers: PJ Pug-a-Pillar because he was the most requested, and the Chapter 3 main villain because the devs said they’re really excited to add it after Deep Sleep is released

If I Remember correctly the Reason why project playtime isn't getting updates right now is because most of the game development is focusing on Chapter 3 but i do believe after Chapter 3 is out project playtime will get back in with more content as my Toughts on the Main 3 I Do Really Like Huggy A Lot Still I Do Agree Mommy Long Legs Being the Weakest But Im Fine with the Design not being 100% Real Spider I Mean Beady Long Legs Form Pikmin Also has 4 Legs the Voice is Alright (Do Agree the Death Line Really Amazing) But Boxy Boo is GOATED and is Single Handley my favorite charater in the seriers Once project playtime get back with new updates monsters Puzzles Maps Ect I Will get Back into it i will wait with patience

I'd probably like project playtime if it didn't run like ass, I haven't played it since the new map release (I think) so maybe it's different now and I might give it another go but so far my experience with it has been a buggy, poorly optimized mess plus more killers would be nice. That being said I do like the idea and would like to see a full scale redemption of the game.

Chapter 3 flipped a switch for me, I love this franchise now. The designs, ones I first thought stereotypical and basic, look amazing (besides you mommy long legs go die in a meat grinder again) this franchise is amazing in my opinion.

Well, Chapter 1 being free now is only for PC Players. If you’re on console, you still have to pay 5 dollars, which to be fair, isn’t a lot, but I would still prefer to play the first chapter free.
