Actually, Quicksilver would be faster than noted here. Kyle's calculations assume sort of an empty square of space. In fact, he'd have to navigate hallways and stairs and stuff like that, so considering he isn't running straight through, he'd actually have to be even faster than calculated here.

There was an Avengers comic that focused on the different members and and their thoughts feelings in inner dialogs. Quicksilver was thinking how everyone feels he is arrogant and aloof to everyone, but in reality, his brain functions so quickly that normal humans are like snails crawling across the floor.

He went to a big mansion. A building he has never been to. He ate, drank, saved tons of students, and even played darts and set a safe landing for where he'll throw the kids onto. He even saved fishes. This guy is insanely fast! And I love him for it.

There's a fun tidbit of corroborating evidence in that scene too that I didn't mention. At the beginning of the scene you see a bee buzzing around, and when Quicksilver shows up, the wings slow down and stop. It's almost like the whole scene happened within one wing beat. And guess what you get if you multiply the average number of wing beats a bee makes by the time I assumed Quicksilver would have in the mansion? One. Just one! Probably a coincidence, but it was like a "Eureka" moment when I did the math. -- KH

Actually, since the mansion is an actual building, Royal Roads University, you could potentially be able to get a floor plan of that building which would give you the layout of the mansion. EDIT: But then again, it's from the first few xmen movies so it would be the layout of the mansion after it was rebuilt so never mind.

This scene made me think that perhaps speed is only a byproduct of QuickSilver's power. In other mutant families there seems to be a relation of powers, take the Cyclops and Havoc, they both shoot energy. Being Magneto's son perhaps QS's real power is the manipulation of a different field, one that allows him to have an isolated pocket of accelerated time? This would also allow for him to have it affect others perhaps to mitigate the damage they would receive from the drastic acceleration they would experience during his rescue, also if he is just moving fast how did he fall fast enough during his back-flip out the window to land before the explosion catches up to him since that is during a scene of slow motion wouldn't he have been moving faster then gravity itself would explain? Also that would allow for him to drink a pop at a rate faster then gravity would pour it into his mouth. He might not even realize his power is anything beyond being fast since that is most apparent effect. Just food for thought.

Two things, First, it was Havoc shooting the blackbird exposed engine that caused the explosion not ceribro. Second, Beast said it was under the basket ball court, placing the source behind the mansion. Plugging in the correct position and adjusting for the second and third floors would give a more accurate number.

This makes me wonder if he has more of a Time dilation power. Where he, and what ever he touches, can enter a pocket of accelerated time. This would help with the whiplash problem, however, he'd have to be able to chose what speeds up or not because it shows him interact with objects that don't speed up. Still doesn't explain why the people he saves don't speed up with him but it would help explain how he can process that much information.

It's just how he can comprehend what's happening. If he wants to he can see it as normal speed for longer distances but he can also focus hard to slow things down I imagine. For the whiplash problem maybe speeders have a sort of shield that provides all sorts of things for them and protects them too

It was a canister of some form of jet fuel that was hit and triggered a chain reaction and given how fast a jet fuel explosion travels and how a blast wave propagates and the distance covered and the wacky stuff he does you lowballed the speed. By studying the comics and other shots from the other X-Men movies you can figure a rough maze for the mansion and adding in data recorded by mythbusters and the U.S. government on the behavior of explosions their blast pressure waves and the fire that follows Quicksilver has to be perceiving the world and moving about 2 to 3 times what you calculated.

OK, so when I did this calculation, this is what I came up with. To begin, I found the detonation velocity of C-4, which is ~8,000 meters per second and assume Cerebro explodes at that speed. The frontage of the X-mansion is roughly 100 meters (estimated from the outdoor scene where Quicksilver begins). He rescues around 50 people. (OK, so I like easy round numbers) He starts around 100 meters away and has to move the people far enough away from the house to be safe, let’s say also 100 meters each. We can estimate he has to do 40 round trips, because sometimes he carries two people at a time and several people he just catapults out a window into a sheet. So 100 meters in, search/grab/screw around/throw, 100 meters out again, repeat. Call it 250 meters per trip. It will take 0.008 seconds for the blast to reach the far end of the house 100 meters away (we can see it starting at the far left of the house as he begins). Therefore, he has to run roughly 40 x 250 meters, or 10,000 meters, in under 0.008 seconds. That works out to 1,250,000 meters in one second, or 4,500,000 kilometers per hour, or Mach 3,644.31 Of course, in canon, Quicksilver is Power Grid Speed 5 (Mach 2 to to orbital velocity, which is ~ 16,000 meters per second), so nowhere near this fast. On the other hand, he has also run faster than light in some stories, so who knows? In the end, he is every bit as fast as the writer of a given story wants him to be. He runs at the speed of plot.

I saw someone say he can change his atomic density which accounts for his time dilation and the fact he doesn’t create craters with every steps or sound booms. However, that doesn’t account for his clothes not being ripped off when he runs, his faster-than-gravity free fall, and how the ppl he threw out the window weren’t turned to mush. I think the most simplest answer is he has the power of time manipulation and with that power comes increased time perception. He wouldn’t need to push through time if he can slow it down all together.

assuming we accept the magic binding forces in quicksilver but used normal forces for everyone else, the finger would... splash. Once an object starts traveling at hypervelocity (+5 mach or about +1500m/s) collisions with the object don't follow rigid or plastic deformation anymore. Instead they deform the same way that water would if you throw a rock at it. It splashes. No material, even metal, has enough strength to withstand an impact that fast. And impact is definitely the word I'd use to describe it. If the mansion scene were realistic, that building would be gorier than a Freddy Kruger movie.

He for sure runs more than just 700 and some odd feet.... He goes out and back in and out again and again to save each person/pair of people. So you figure he has to go down to the x-men floor at least 5 times, and that's twice the normal length it takes him to get outside when he's grabbing all those kids.... Plus, there's like what, 30+ kids? Not counting their pets, which he also saves, and the stuff he has to set up to keep them from getting hurt or killed from him saving them. So even if he grabbed two kids at a time, that's still at least 20 times he has to go in and out of the mansion, and they are all pretty far away from whee the mansion used to be at the time of the explosions end. So he probably runs closer to 6,000+ feet really, if you figure the size of going in and out of just an average house to the area where the kids are when it's all over, which is like 150 feet one way. And that's being conservative given the size of the mansion and the fact that he's covering 3 different levels, one of which is not just at a normal basment level, but pretty far beneath the normal ground floor of the mansion. So maybe closer to like 7,500 feet or maybe even more, aka a mile and a half at the very least....

I think that there is indeed super speed happening here. But, there must also be some type of time manipulation going on. Otherwise, these people are dead due to the crazy g-forces that they would be experiencing. Also, at one point Quicksilver is traveling downward while holding some mutants. He is going a little faster than gravity because he is in free fall. This guy is mastering time while he is moving really, really fast. He has the potential to be one of the most powerful mutants that has ever lived. Unfortunately, speedsters tend to be very in the now and not the thinking lot of heroes.

they didnt do any build up for quicksilver. the tv show flash is his origins onwards. meaning that he is just getting a handle on his speed and after going into the speed force he will only get faster knowing that alone. flash is one of the theoretical universe's most powerful characters. him being able to out run death aka time in the comics.

That's probably now one of my favorite tackles to super speed. A time dilating/warping aura (speed force) would be needed to achieve it without the need of extra durablity to a character's body. As well as not destroying everything around him/her and being able to save people by extending that aura outward. One be detail I've yet to see mentioned (mostly for flash relation) is gravitational effects. A common speed associating with flash is achieving light speed. Aside from note being able to see, gravity becomes non existent and getting traction becomes an issue at higher speeds.

No, he's just the most entertaining. He's a CAREFULLY constructed amalgamation of traits that endear themselves to the types of viewers who see these movies, with EXTREMELY little depth, precisely so that an actual personality won't get in the viewer's way of enjoying him doing completely impossible things. Oh, and the actor playing him is considered very hot to most people. And even straight men would rather their male heroes be hot than not. Because then, when you imagine you're the character, YOU'RE hot. I mean, how many guys like pretending they're Swamp Thing compared to The Hulk? Sure, Hulk isn't "hot," but he's at least ruggedly handsome. Swamp Thing is... Swamp Thing. Ugh.

Everyone is missing the detail, that he listens to music at normal speed while he does, all that he does. Music is outside of himself, therefore, he shouldn't be able to listen to anything while he's moving until he actually stops. This shows that in truth, he's not a common speedster, but something entirely different, engulfing other powers within him, that at first aren't so easily noticed.

I have a theory regarding Quicksilver's super power and to a lesser extent the super power of all the super speed comic characters. The theory is that their power is not actually super speed but instead the power to alter the rate at which they progress through time (Variable Temporal Progression) The reason for this theory is that there are several things that have never even reasonable been explained away with characters such as quick silver and the flash. the top three I can think of are Speed of thought, Collateral damage, and Compression/Decompression issues. So first Speed of Thought: Characters such as Quicksilver and the Flash seem to be able to process thoughts at a speed relative to their physical speed. as they increase in speed they are still able to process the information which their eyes see and such at a similar speed as when they are standing still and they are able to be suprised and able to understand the speech of other people and carry on conversations. However this means that the electrical signals in their brain have to be capable of exceeding the speed of light by huge orders of magnitude. And anyone that can process information at that speed would have near god like cognative abilities because in the time it takes a normal person to perform a mental calculation they would be able to do millions of those kinds of calculations. Compression/Decompression: if your body accelerates to the speeds we commonly associate with characters such as the Flash or Quicksilver then you run into a problem with the density of air. The relative pressure of the air against that persons body and organs would increase thus making them subject to the laws of compression and decompression. This means that unless they hold their breath while they move at increased speed they are in for serious if not fatal complications due to the air in their blood compressing and decompressing. Finally Collateral Damage: The air again is the culprit here as the act of moving through air displaces it. As such if you are moving at the speeds listed in this video you are generating a shockwave with higher destructive force then then the explosion your saving them from. because it is the shockwave of an explosion which kills more than debris or the ball of fire. So in the Mach 118 example the video gives anyone within 200 feet would have their eardrums violently ruptured, and have their brain, heart, liver, and all the other squishy bits reduced to the consistency of jello in a highspeed blender. That was one of the reasons why I started thinking how they could get the same effect without all the consequences that were clearly being ignored. If these characters are instead creating a tiny field around their bodies which makes them progress through time at a faster rate it fixes all of the problems. Their brain is no faster than normal the air around them experiences the same effect in close proximity to them so no kiloton shock waves as they move and because grabbing a person would give them limited exposure to that same field you could grab someone and move them at super speeds to safety without turning them into the meat equivallent of a bean bag chair.

Hi Kyle, just wanted to point out that back in X-Factor during Joe Quesada's (currently editor in chief) stint as the penciler, Pietro Maximoff aka Quicksilver and the rest of the team met with Doc Sampson for mental evaluations. During this event, Pietro reveals that the world around him is always moving slow, and that it drives him nuts. He compares it to a really slow employee at a coffee shop if my memory serves. So maybe not as cool an ability as you think.

Neither Quicksilver or the Flash are actually speedsters. What they actually do is control their individual time dilation fields. This actually solves a lot of the physics paradoxes their powers would cause if they simply relied on speed.

I think Quicksilver doesn't move fast. I think he stretches the time around him. (The same with Flash.) If he can pull any object into his time bubble for a short moment, he could interact with them without leaving a mess. Otherwise there are too many physical inconsistencies.

Speedsters have an ability to keep the person they are saving from reacting normally. Some force makes them that fast and protects them from damage. Cause they are as durable as a normal human when they are hurt. One got shot by a normal bullet and died. So some force has to protect them from their own g forces and that force they tap into can be transfered to the person being saved

Well it's theorised based on the fact he doesn't cause an earthquake with every step, turn anyone he touches into paste or mist, and not break his face on water droplets or finger by flicking a piece of metal... that he can also manipulate gravity and inertia. This would also potentially allow him to break the light barrier without 'breaking' the light barrier. (As he would be blind after a certain speed.) Similar to how we have planes today that travel faster than the speed of sound without causing a sonic boom by traveling within jet streams. So he also basicly creates a singularity style bubble around him and anyone or anything that he holds. Also even after everything is slowed down, he's still just a blur. Also also, he isn't even trying XÞ

i think that quicksilver has a time bubble . cuz the stuff that he touches moves at the speed in wich he is moving apearing to us as if its at normal speed but when it goas far from him it slows down immediately.so what i think is that quicksilver powers in these movies are the fact that he has a time bubble that keeps him and other ppl or objects within the bubble at normal speed whilst everything else is in slowmo and vice versa due to relativity ......or at least thats what i think

thats what i tought at first then i examined the scene further . if you look close enough you can see that he is doing somethings defying the laws of physics ( the table flip scene ) if only his perception of time changes then he would be stuck in the air but in his case gravity acts on him as if he was falling at normal speed (not slowmo)

At 2:18 it is said that sirybrom is exploding but if you watch the movie scene Alex's laser beam is pointed at the leaving protagonists and then it shows them disappear but the laser continues throughout the door behind them and into the chamber in which the modified Sr 71 blackbird is held. Also as the laser passes into the chamber it shows the laser hitting the engine which is what caused the explosion. Plus the chamber in which the blackbird is being held in looks encased in metal possibly allowing more time for quicksilver to grab everyone.

Just before that Quicksilver scene in X-Men Apocalypse, there is a bee flying and we see how slow it is going. So you could assume with the speed of the bee regularly and compare it with how slow it goes when Quicksilver is there, you might be able to calculate the speed of Quicksilver at that time.

While quicksilver does move fast, people don't realize that his powers are two-fold: he moves pretty fast AND he slows down time in the universe. Thus rules of gravity and g-force remain in place but people aren't harmed by his interference because they themselves are slowed. Source: absolutely none.

Quicksilver covers the distance many many times over in and out of the building different floors and checking everything. He was certain he got everyone which means he checked everywhere even places where no on was. I'd say he travels at least ten times faster than your estimate. The speed likely fluctuates at different times though

Think of it this way: what would happen if you grabbed onto a speeding train? Technically you would slow it down a bit, but it has so much momentum that adding your mass to it barely changes its velocity. If the hammer can manipulate its own mass, then Thor could throw it when it's light, grab it when it's heavy, and get pulled along like he grabbed onto a train. -- KH

Thor throws the hammer let's say with the power of taking 1 ton of weight behind it (think of it like a rocket) so the hammer can pick up anything under that weight for a distance.

I Have read over the majority of the comments and conversations down below an wish to point out a few things some have over looked or not aware of. Both Quicksliver and The Flash have time-traveled forward and backwards in time. Both have saved several people at one time. Out ran exploration, even detonating planets. Made new time-lines, corrected old ones, and stop the some of the most powerful villain known galaxies. In this regard they are equally match in all fields and feats. However there is one big different. Thanks to one of Quicksliver side-powers he is not effected by the acceleration of time or moving at " The Infinity speed realm". As for Flash. He is effected by these factors an have died, blown-up, disappeared from existed, or trap between dimension because of this.

You could also argue that the mansion itself was absorbing some of the explosive force and delaying its spreading, thus allowing for more time. The basement level where the explosion started appeared reinforced, and since it wasn't a purpose-built explosive that went off, and since it was ruptured on the side facing Cerebro, the spread upward could have similarly been delayed.

I was disappointed with this video. There was so much more it could have went in to. plus the distance he travelled they used could be better. The explosion started when Quicksilver was out in the street, pretty far from the actual mansion. He did so many things in that scene they could have scienced for us. I love this series and was waiting for this topic in particular since i saw the movie. I expect better from one of my favorite science shows. SMH, I'm calling for a part 2. who's with me?

Magneto and scarlet-witch both of them you see they have manipulative ability's like controlling chance and moving metal, and then quicksilver can run fast which is more physical... no.he bends time around him, or rather within him to allow him to move at a normal speed, but everything around him slows down. so he can manipulate space time like the Alcubierre equation describes warp. so no advanced homiostatus er whatever like the Avengers says. and the problems of super speed in superheros like heat and friction do not apply as simply. this is my guess

Fun math involved. The equations are probably lowballing Quicksilver's speed given that the audience really shouldn't have been under the impression at any given moment during that sequence that he was moving with any sense of urgency at all, despite how much distance and how many actions he performed during the estimated 6ms it would have taken for the explosion to decimate the mansion. It's interesting that while Quicksilver made a point of holding Magneto's neck to keep him from getting whiplash during the prison break, that may have just been inserted for the sake of an additional bit of dialog and humor as the g-forces he would have to generate to accelerate as shown on screen would likely turn flesh and blood into red mist/jelly. So either Quicksilver creates some sort of undetectable magic force field (magnetic field; ha.) that protects him and anyone in his immediate proximity from damage while he's using his super speed power, or Quicksilver's power is really manipulating space time itself though dilation, which is multiple magnitudes more powerful (and awesome) that simply being able to move really, really fast.

If you are going to assume the velocity of the explosion, wouldn't it be easier to just estimate his speed based on the scene where he is moving near the explosion? Also, whatever Quicksilver is doing to not rip himself apart when he moves fast can be assumed to extend to anything he touches to some extent, or he would be shattering bullets and floor tiles, making huge holes in the ground when he moves, and ripping off limbs with a touch.

A recent episode of The Flash did a similar thing, Barry ran up and touched Iris and started moving her at a speed where everything else was slowed down, and she was perfectly fine and was able to talk. If Quicksilver is able to do this, then people he touches and moves are relatively safe from the effect of G Forces

I say DoFP/Apocalypse Quicksilver can imbue objects and organisms with part of his speed. If he does not, then there is no reason for him to put on headphones on DoFP, All he will hear is a Slow low vibration. But organisms could still get regular whiplash if they are not prepared or Quicksilver does not prevent it.

MrDARKNESSXSMASH yes, I agree. The writers control their power. But The Flash is the only one mentioned so far that has the capability to run faster then instant teleportation. And he can also drag other people (I.e. Quicksilver) into his own speed dimension that would render Quicksilver as fast/slow as The Flash wants him to be. Also, The Flash can absorb kinetic energy from surrounding people, which is what allowed him to run faster then instant teleportation. So, with Quicksilver running beside The Flash, he can just absorb Quicksilvers released kinetic energy and run faster, easier. Yes, The Flash is OP.. But then again, speed is OP. :3 Also, Superman is not a speedster, his "speed" is just his normal running speed magnified by the suns power. If superman had The Flashes speed/kinetic absorption coupled with his solar power absorption, he could run faster then The Flash cause he could multiply the the amount of kinetic energy with solar energy. I think the one thing you should know that would change this is that the explosion from Havoc and the Jet isn't from the centre of the mansion; it's underneath the basketball court in the backyard of the mansion. So this could add a few more seconds to the explosion, and minus a few from Quicksilver's speed.

My calculation is a bit simpler. In the scene where he stands still in front of the explosion, it is moving at about 0.1 m/s (the slowest we see in the movie). So it has been slowed by a factor of 70.000. Now you take the estimated speed of the explosion and multiply it with this factor, giving us the speed he would have in this moment. 490.000.000 m/s well.. we might have several problems here... did I make a logical error or did Quicksilver break the "light barrier"?
