Samurai Jack is the only Western show I can think of with the confidence to present the viewer with an establishing shot, then suddenly cease *all action* for a few moments of quiet contemplation before moving on. Cutting to black in order to *show* us something takes a lot of trust in your audience. Several seconds of silence at the height of an intense duel is an incredibly effective tool, but few directors let their work breathe like that.

I can't wait to share this show with my kids when they are old enough, because it is just so good. It's timeless. Somehow they found an animation style that doesn't look dated OR new age. It's something you could see on tv today and not know it was made 20 years ago. The visual storytelling is out of this world and the premise of the show allowed them to be so versatile and varied in the storylines. It's amazing.
