@@LeoCastroFot : I don't think he is all that old. His white beard makes him look old - but mine started going grey at age 50, though I still have some brown scalp hair at age 75. He has good skin - no deep wrinkles. Generally, people age much faster in places like Pakistan and Afghanistan - perhaps due to poor diet. I'm still earning money in part time work. I don't think many of these Pakistani workers can work past 45-50 due to their high accident rate.

I get tired of seeing these third or even fourth world shops with people rebuilding engines and things on the floor and on the dirt while the comments have all kind of praise for how ' smart ' they are. They are in reality just butcher shops that are producing totally inferior product that most likely gets sold in our country as ' high quality ' and ' meets all standards ' not to mention getting full price for a WAY substandard job. These probably get a huge REMANUFACTURED or even NEW tag on them ( since they were made of stuff that was not an old axle ) along with a phony address from some make believe plant in DETROIT MICHIGAN.

По этому поводу могу сказать - мой брат делал оси для прицепов лесовоза . Было это в конце 1970- х годов . Из круглого прутка толщиной 130 миллиметров и длиной 2 100 миллиметров на большом токарном станке делал посадочные места под крепление к прицепу ( балансир ) и посадочные места подшипников - диаметр 85 миллиметров , с краю резьба для крепления гаек - 82 миллиметра с шагом - 2 мм . Вся ось была из цельного прута . Станок марки ДиП - 500 С уважением - Виктор из России , Иркутская область

He measured it right before pulling it from the stack. At 18:14 the camera pans left just as he is letting the measuring tape recoil. Someone had already cut these to the needed length. The cast ends are large enough to machine to the proper shape while compensating for welding inaccuracies. As long as the ends are machined to the correct shape, and correctly spaced apart, the weld accuracy does not matter as much.

Good Job! This should break within the first 10 miles if it lasts just putting a load on it at rest. No penetration on the welds. No preheat. Pure trash. You have to love the centering drill on the lather. it moves like half an inch while "center drilling" the axle.

@@keithammleter3824 The part the drill bit is in is called a live center. It is a tapered drill chuck that holds the bit and fits into the tail stock. It is supposed to be rigid, not flopping around like a fish on the deck. This would tell me either the live center is worn (probably) or the tail stock is shot (probably as well). The way it's supposed to work is you would but the centering bit in the live center, put the live center into the tail stock and run the tail stock into the piece creating a center point. Since the shaft isn't centered or the other end in the chuck, all the work they did is useless as the wheels aren't going to track parallel nor will they probably be perpendicular to the ground causing extreme stress on the axle and you know the rest.

@@HueToobBlows : I know what a live centre is - and that is not what he uses to drill the job centres (he uses a live centre when turning and threading).. Look carefully at 7:22 and especially when he does the other end at 14:08. He has a Jacobs style chuck mounted on a Morse taper inserted into the tailstock quill. All normal practice. But instead of a centering drill rigid clamped by the Jacob jaws, he has a standard twist drill mounted in some sort of floppy joint (like a CV joint) inside a shaft that is clamped in the Jacob jaws. The Jacob chuck shows a bit of flexing, the drill bit no significant flexing, yet until inserted the drill bit hangs down 10 degrees or so until inserted. Yet it does not rotate when in the job. Presumably broken drill bits are frequent, depending on how well he hand-guides it. You are correct of course that the truck's wheels are not going to track properly nor will they rotate on a true axis. The result will be excessive tyre and wheel bearing wear. Don't fret over high axle stress - as another poster said, it looks like they use salvaged water mains pipe. Who knows what strength it has or has not. The welds are not very good.

@@AffordBindEquipment : Errr, no. It has quite a bit more than 1/16th wobble in the tube I'd say. But that is quite unimportant. These are truck trailer axles, or the extra axles in a six-wheel truck. None of it rotates in use. Roller bearing races are fitted at each end (the turned down forged pieces) and the brake drums then go over the roller bearings, so that each wheel rotates about the non-rotating shaft. The shaft is clamped to the leaf springs by U-bolts just inboard of the roller bearings. Having said that, the video didn't show us what they did about the considerable rust on what looks like salvaged water pipe. One thing I've noticed about these little Pakistani production shops is that they invariably ensure that what they turn out LOOKS like a new one turned out from a professional factory, packed in plastic sheet in nicely labelled boxes. So I assume that these axles later go on another lathe to be turned down over the full length of the pipe to get rid of the rust. (It wouldn't be done in the same lathe as that is set up for thread cutting.) Between that and dodgy welding, and water pipe steel not made for strength, heaven knows what strength exists in the final product. What is important is that no attempt was made to ensure that the two forged and turned down end pieces are on a precisely common axis as RJD pointed out, so tyres will crab and tyre wear will be excessive. is left the

A "live center" has a ball thrust bearing built in and the center point revolves with the work. The older style "dead center", the type used in this video, is fixed and the work revolves against the drilled center in the end of the axle. It is, in effect, a primitive bearing and that is the reason for a dab of grease. Many older lathes had a little reservoir and grease dauber built into the tailstock for just such a purpose. I am sure this guy would be using a live center if one was available or he could afford it. The dead center is an older form of tooling but still useful and relevant.

Okay…… Look, I’m a jack of all trades and master of none. I consider myself a good welder, and I run CNC machines all day long. My 26 years of operation have taught me many things. And after watching this distinguished gentleman run a welder and a worn out lathe, I must honestly say: Sir, you “MUST NOT” repeat anything you just did again…..ever…..or you will perish in a horrific lathe accident. And if by some miracle you are still alive, then for the love of all that is holy…….please leave the welding to a more qualified person. That axle begins as scrap and ends up the same after you’re done. I’m sorry for the harsh statement but damn ! That axle is junk.

@@ukpkmkk_2 Not a welder, but an automotive engineer. Yes it would be better for the welding root to weld it in a conical way but this method may be sufficient. Welds are often even stronger compared to the rest of the part but it always depends.

Due to no joint preparation, he’s got a pretty wide gap to fill up anyhow. The absence of any preparation on that pipe end, such as grinding the torch slag and rust off before welding, will compromise the strength of the weld for sure! I guess their standards are relaxed at best!

Тоже этому изначально удивился, когда сварщик забивал литую болванку в трубу. Криво-косо, без добивания до нужног размера, без доводки соосности. Потом, когда деталь была закреплена в станке, при её вращении, замерял штангелем, при этом портя его. Как так можно работать и относится к работе, мне, наверно, этого никогда не понять. Но, если так работает. Значит так можно.
