How The Lost World: Jurassic Park Was Supposed To End - The Lost World Endings

During the production of every single film in the Jurassic Park franchise, with the notable exception of Jurassic World, the movies have all gone through a third act
rewrite during filming and this has basically altered the original intended closure of the movie and instead given us endings that are different as to what they were
initially intended to be. And yes, in case you were wondering, Fallen Kingdom also went through a revised ending while it was nearing completion.
This is a video on The Lost World: Jurassic Park Review and The Lost World Endings from the movie. These are some of The Lost World Secrets some don't know and The Lost World Histories are detailed with The Lost World Quote from The Lost World Harding. If you think this is illegible you ain't seen nothing yet! The Lost World Indominus is a cool keyword and The Lost World Dong Go Into The Long Grass is another. Now in the movie The Lost World T Rex is also called The Lost World Tyrannosaurus when it goes to The Lost World San Diego and The Lost World City in the movie is NOT Jurassic Park San Fran or The Lost World San Fran so I don't know where people got that from. Now The Lost World Game is cool but The Lost World Tyrannosaur levels are hard in it and The Lost World Raptor Attack is a good tag as well. Honestly I loved The Lost World 1990s stuff...and still do today! :)
Now that my ridiculous tagging of the keywords in the description is done, I can stop fragmenting sentences and hope this video ranks high in the search...hopefully...

I saw a fan rewrite of the script where Ian is in constant contact with John Hammond throughout the time on Isla Sorna. During the scene where the T-Rex attacks the camp, Ian is in the middle of a radio conversation with John, and the roar of the T-Rex and the screaming causes the sickly Hammond to have a heart attack and die in his bed. When they get off the island, it plays it off as if it were the ending, transitioning from Malcome, Sarah and Kelly in the helicoptor to John Hammond's funeral on the mainland, the San Diego incident then happens after that, but Malcolm is not present at the docks, he initially sees the chaos on TV and meets up with Sarah to find the baby rex.

Interesting. But I think a large portion of the film is set up so that the survivors have no contact to the outside world. Ian and John communicating would completely turn this upside down and change the whole movie.

An ending focusing on John Hammond's funeral probably wouldn't have ended the movie well, but at least it would shed some light on why we never got to see him in _Jurassic Park III_.

It would have been fantastic to see more of Ajay in The Lost World - including the scene that was cut with him and Roland at the bar. He seemed like an interesting character that didn't get as much detail and fleshing out as he should have, considering the amount of screen time he received. That being said, I think it's safe to say that this is the film that left me rewatching Jurassic Park and The Lost World over and over on VHS, and becoming obsessed with paleontology when I was a youngster! As always, keep up the great work! I really DIG your videos. ;)

That was one of the biggest disappointments to my young self back then since, having read the book before seeing the movie, the sequence in the novel with the dinosaurs stalking Thorne was a thrilling highlight that the movie could have benefitted from. In the earlier script the male Rex was supposed to emulate that in how it sneaks up on Roland and Ludlow which ended up happening with the Indominus and Hamada in JW.
@baranguirus
@baranguirus 6 жыл бұрын
Klayton Fioriti I feel that even that would have been a disservice to it. Heck, I think it was a disservice to Ceratosaurus; sure, she left the fans an impression, but she appeared for like two seconds sniffing at poo! She deserved better.

I totally agree. That was one of my favorite scenes in the book and even though I didnt read the book until after seeing the movie, I feel it would have totally contributed something great and made the movie the best one in the franchise. At least we got a semblance of it with the I.rex in JW. But to this day, every time I watch the lost world I practically dread the upcoming San Diego scene, knowing how it could have been so much better.

Concerning Ajay’s death: I prefer the second version of it where he realizes the mistake he has made by following the hunters into the elephant grass to save them. He realizes that while responsibility was the right move in that scenario, he also realizes that it has cost him his life, and as such, he stops, closes his eyes, and lets the raptors attack him, and kill him. I feel that this version of Ajay’s death is much more suited for his character, and would be a much bigger catalyst for Roland declining the offer as game warden in Jurassic Park San Diego

I feel like the San Diego ending is much more cinematic and large scale. While the original ending was a bit more smaller scale. I honestly prefer the new ending, as it does tie into the main theme of the film; dinosaurs and men do not mix. It ties to the scenes of Ingen planning to take dinosaurs to the mainland and why Hammond seemed persistent that they stop Ingen from taking Dinosaurs off the island. Plus as you mentioned in another video, it is a homage to the Arthur Conan Doyle novel’s film adaptation, which also added a new ending of taking a dinosaur home.

Thank you for the compliment! And originally it did have a LOT more of both of them, but most of their scenes got cut :( And the abrupt shift is really distracting because the end of the movie is something I love and find a lot of merit in but it has a HUGE issue with starting off in San Diego out of nowhere. I like the sound of the alternate ending, but I think the San Diego incident needed to happen. I still haven't read The Lost World book, but Sarah Harding is my biggest problem with the movie. From her lets jump down Nick's throat about not effecting the island inhabitants by smoking to IMMEDIATELY PRIOR trying to pet a BABY STEGO, to then later be walking around covered in Baby Rex blood after having hypothesized that T-Rex are extremely paternal and will expand their territory after the Baby was taken (and also hearing that they have incredible sense of smell). Everything about how she's portrayed bumps The Lost World from Classic Movie status to B-Movie quality, which is why I don't think I minded JP3 when it came out. I'm looking forward to more videos on The Lost World!

Lost World is my favourite instalment from the Jurassic Park franchise. I felt it was darker in mood which I felt was more in keeping with Michael Crichton's first novel. Hammond is more of a darker version of Walt Disney. I also really enjoyed the contrast between the primal world of the jungle to T.Rex coming to San Diego as a homage to King Kong. Very atmospheric. Just a good yarn. pure "Chomping" escapism for 2 hours. Thanks for posting this channel I have put a like and subscribed. I think your comments are interesting, well researched and intelligent.

Why does Ian Malcolm act so differently between the two films? He always seemed like 2 different characters in each film even though he isn't. If it's character development from his traumatic experiences in jp1 then damn he got scared into a non-pervy loyal husband and father
@KlaytonFioriti

Well after Jurassic Park 1 he told everyone about the dinosaurs and no one believed him. InGen started a smear campaign against Malcolm and it cost him his reputation and he was defamed because of it. Thats why Lost World has such a dark, cynical and sarcastic tone to it. It really follows his character as someone who's been amongst the animals before and doesn't want to be involved but still has to be

I really enjoy the San Diego ending in the final film, but I admit this alternate ending would have been tighter and made better use of the Raptors and the Pteraodons. There needed to be a few more scenes connecting the last few scenes on Isla Sorna and the San Diego sequence as you also pointed out. Yet with the Jurassic Park San Diego subplot needing a conclusion, it would have been odd to end the film with that thread unresolved until a third film, like with The Empire Strikes Back to Return of the Jedi.
@KlaytonFioriti
@KlaytonFioriti 6 жыл бұрын
From my understanding, and I'm not sure how true this is but it is what I've heard, Jurassic Park 3 was supposed to pick up where The Lost World left off with Ludlow having the Male T Rex and the dinosaur headed towards the island. But this was apparently a LONG time before The Lost World got retooled with the San Diego stuff and I'm assuming it may be a rumour that floated around the set after Koepp wrote the ending with Hammond's Eulogy. In his final draft he had the scene play out with Malcolm and Sarah watching the ship return to Isla Sorna in a shot where the camera would zoom out of its focus directly on the ship with the military ships being gradually revealed. Malcolm was supposed to say something like "Things are about to get really weird" I still think the San Diego scene is incredible but yes it has a major shortcoming when it comes to the flow of the plot going from the island on to the mainland.
@oscarstainton
@oscarstainton 6 жыл бұрын
If what you read up on this is true and Jurassic Park 3 was originally going to be almost entirely dedicated to the Jurassic Park San Diego concept, then in effect it would have been a single story spread over two films, like what they did with The Matrix, Pirates of the Caribbean and Back to the Future. If Spielberg was up to the task and willing to stay through the whole production I think he could have certainly pulled it off, maybe even resulting in him pulling a Godzilla for the whole of the third film.

I likewise prefer the San Diego sequence for a few reasons. One, it's a delightful throwback to the *original* The Lost World film, which featured a Brontosaurus rampage through London. For another, I liked the removal of the masquerade and the reveal of the dinosaurs to the public- it nicely bookends Malcolm's arc in the film in a way the other endings wouldn't really do- it vindicated him after the film earlier established he was a laughingstock after InGen engaged in a smear campaign once Malcolm broke his non-disclosure agreement. (Incidentally I've also been fond of the gymnastics scene, because it's entirely consistent with physics and the raptors in Jp1 and TLW were smart, but not too smart, and the idea of a raptor reacting with dull surprise at being introduced to its prey doing something as unexpected as gymnastics felt like really realistic animal behavior to me, but I digress) Also sidenote- Geosternbergia being a separate animal is hotly debated recently; the scuttlebutt I get from a lot of pterosaur specialists' blogs and comments online is that sternbergi is better considered another species of Pteranodon again. This really isn't surprising considering the reassignment was controversial to begin with, and all studies found longiceps and sternbergi as each others' closest relatives regardless (IE, referring it to Pteranodon still resulted in a monophyletic Pteranodon). In fact, some pterosaur researchers consider sternbergi to be the direct ancestor to longiceps- and removing sternbergi from Pteranodon would result in a paraphyletic "Geosternbergia". Fun pterosaur fact of the day- a good rundown can be found here: markwitton-com.blogspot.com/2016/07/the-pteranodon-complex-and-dismantling.html

I personally hated the ending to TLW. The entire romp through LA was a real facepalm for me and my dad when we went to go see it in the theater. Both he and I LOVED Godzilla movies (besides the Matt Broderick one, which was...OK) so these nods to classic film (including Godzilla) were a total destruction of our suspension of disbelief. The Lost World was coming off as (intending to be) a much darker movie than JP1, so the 180 that we felt, having a deep love for the cheesiness and light-hearted enjoyment of Godzilla and King Kong, totally shat on the rest of the movie's tone. We both felt uneasy and jipped out of what could have been a really dark ending. On that note: Both my father and I enjoyed the movie as a fun blockbuster, but we both felt it needed to drop the moments of levity and ramp the dark stuff up. JP1 had majesty mixed with horror. JP2 couldn't rely on the majesty, so it had to up the horror big-time...instead, it tried to replace majesty with campiness. Regardless of whether you liked JP2 or not, it would have been infinitely cooler had it been truer to the book, or at least more violent and horrifying. IDK man, I just desperately want a pants-pissing survival horror with a strong R rating.

There really is a lot that I would have liked to see in the films, but I am satisfied with them as they stand. I do have one question regarding TLW though (if this hasn't been answered in some way already): where on earth did Nick go off to during the San Diego scene?? My theory is that he took Kelly to safety, but that's kind of a stretch.

Thats the same idea a lot of people have actually. And personally, I wouldn't say its that big of a stretch, because Ian and Sarah totally wouldn't let her hang around them for what they're about to do lol. I will say that after Nick Van Owen's tampering with Roland's weapon led to the butterfly effect of the animal ultimately being brought to the mainland, he may've decided to just stop interfering

As it is not explained very well and I think it would have really have made an impact finding out how many died. So except for JP 3 all the third acts in JP have had an T-rex in it. Wonder if that whould have changed anything if they uncluded Another T-Rex in JP 3. I was always thinking as a child that they whould do a similar thing from the first movie. They appear on the beach ready to be rescued but then the Spinosaur shows up, they do however manage to chase it away with there fire power and it runs back into the jungle to like it´s wounds. But then a bigger T-rex then the first one it killed shows up and kills the Spinosaurus. That was just a silly thought.

Personally, I found the San Diego sequence extremely unnecessary. While I loved the movie as a whole, despite sometimes entering the ridiculous territory (like the mentioned gymnastics scene), it was a whole different movie from the Jurassic Park and that atmosphere of being hunted the entire film shook me pretty hard as a kid. Things like the famous T-Rex wishbone scene, the tall grass raptors, bloodied waterfall and the likes gave the film more of a survival horror feel than an action movie - and I loved that theme. And then we suddenly get a T-Rex in the middle of a city. It was an aburpt change in scenery and storytelling, there was no more hiding and being hunted, instead we were given a rampage in a town - which felt like it tried to contend with the classics such as King Kong and Godzilla. And this, in my opinion, feels unneeded. Jurassic Park is a different movie from these, it doesn't require a token scene of big beasts annihilating towns. We've got enough human property destruction in the worker village. Ironically, Jurassic Park 3 did that third act better, at least until the deus ex machina ending. The action being kept to the island and the removal of original ending only helped the movie, in my opinion. Not that it amounted for much, since all in all, the movie itself spent too much time gushing over the Spino rather than building tension. But it definitely helped.

When I was younger I thought Lost World was not nearly as good as the first because of all the talking bits, but by the time I was a teenager I really started to appreciate the story and character elements. I've always liked the San Diego parts, it was a nice change of scenery and had some unique and crazy scenarios play out with the T-Rex which were scary and sometimes hilarious (the dude that got eaten because he was trying to open the door to the store).

I can’t wait to see the Critique of Critiques video, I’ve seen so many Lost World reviews where the person seems to be looking for reasons to complain when they’re isn’t a problem at all; it’s just annoying. “How does this make any sense”, well if you thought about it for more than 5 seconds you could easily answer that question, “The CGI looks bad”, considering it has the best CGI in the franchise I’d like to know what you think of the other movies and their CGI, “This movie follows the Jurassic Park pattern too much” (Which is an actual complaint I heard once), what possible pattern could they have been following with only one other movie? You sure this was meant for the Lost World? Overall a considerable amount of their complaints are easily explained away if you put any kind of thought into it at all which is sad. Just feels like they’re trying to hate this movie for some reason instead of giving it a fair and honest review.

I never minded the San Diego sequence due to knowing the context of which the movie is spiritually based on. The movie is called _THE LOST WORLD Jurassic Park,_ and whenever I hear that first part I immediately think of the original 1912 novel by Conan Doyle and the 1925 film, which both feature the same scenario in which they bring a live dinosaur back to civilization and havoc ensues once the animal escapes. Even Crichton's novel uses the same concept. I personally don't understand how come people overlook this when it's just that obvious. Plus, I'm a huge Godzilla fan, and I was glad to see Spielberg making a faithful reference.

@@larryfreed4415 The original Lost World's main plot is about people going to a mysterious and abandoned island filled with dinosaurs, the dinosaurs are confirmed to be survivors of the mass extinction that happened at the end of the Late Cretaceous period. The Novel's main plot is the same, however the dinosaurs are actually Bio-Engineered creatures. Crichton even confirmed that he took inspirations from Doyle's work. The film expands further on this homage, by bringing the Buck Tyrannosaur into San Diego just like how the original Lost World brought a dinosaur into London.

I would like this end more, even though the San Diego scene was pretty cool. I agree with the hiccup in the transition from island to San Diego, it was kinda like how King Kong feels broken in two movies. Maybe if the movie spent less time on the island ... ... like, say, have the movie start in a similar way, Malcolm and crew go to the island, they try to track down Sarah but instead find the Ingen group already with a bunch of dinos captured and getting ready to go get some more, turns out Sarah ends up tracking them instead and they sabotage some of the equipment of the hunters, hillarity ensues and the hunters escape with very few dinos and Malcolm's crew escapes on a scene along the lines of that original ending, then a short scene showing the hunters now getting screwed over by having a juvenile Spino invade their ship and kill most of the crew before jumping, falling or getting thrown into the water. San Diego scene goes about the same way, but maybe with more than just the T-Rex. on land. Maybe have some of the hunters join the heroes to stop the dinos.

I can't wait for your "Critiquing Criticism" video. Like you, I love the Lost World: Jurassic Park, and hold it in high regard for all its childhood memories. However, like you, I can find fault in some way. My main gripe in the film (which I hope you'll address and clear up for me because this has been bugging me for a while) is how a resourceful and greatly set-up character like Sarah Harding turns stupid for the start of the second half. She gets the blood of the baby rex on her jacket, she has already stated that the parenting skills of the Rexs are now up for more in depth academic discussion because of their devotion. Through out the film, she shows great animal knowledge in practise but throws it all out of the window for five-ten minutes of the film. She knows the Rexs have an excellent sense of smell, its why she hides all the food in her tent in plastic bags when she hears them coming; she states right after the Rex attack on the trailers that the mated pair will more then likely come after them well past their territory perimeter to make sure that the threat to their baby is eliminated. Roland notices the blood is leaving a trail on the leaves and asks if she was attacked, and Sarah even says its the blood of the baby T-Rex. She's literally been leaving a blood trail for the parents to follow. And the movie presents this as something Sarah couldn't have foreseen, as shown by her face when she looks up and notices the blood on the jacket inside her tent. But Hammond mentioned that Sarah has stayed out in the wilds of Africa with large predators most of her adult life studying them - that means she knows the number 1 rule of NEVER letting the scent of blood lead directly to you. I'm sorry if this seems like a rant, it's not. It's just that this is the only bit of the film that REALLY bothers me. Sarah is supposed to be top-of-her-field scientist, and I'm just an avid dino/nature-documentary nut, and I knew that straight away! I mean, I can even let the stupid gymnastics thing go because it was something set up in dialogue in the beginning of the film.

We got it in JP3....Ive always said, if you watch the movie JP: Lost World up until the horrendous decision by Spielberg to leave the island, for his Godzilla-like ending, and then if you start watching JP3 at the point they find the Abandoned facility with the Raptor inside, you "basically" have the entire books plot for JP: Lost World, but with different characters.

The Sandiago incident could have done away with but I see it as a very good four-shadow to the film as to what was to come from the earlier scenes of the movie. Plus ➕ it was bound to of happen in the first place because ING wanted this to happen anyway.
